Penny's noodles has several locations and I have eaten at two of them (Diversey & Sheffield). Both locations are great. Which ever one I'm close to is the one I go to. I talked to the owner and I'm trying to encourage him to open a Penny's in Hyde Park. Try the Pad Se Ew Chicken & Gyoza for starters.
Always a great go-to for quick and good Thai food. My favorite is the Thom Khai Ka soup and spicy basil with chicken noodles. We lived close to the Lakeview location and found ourselves there once a week. We have tried the Diversey location too but prefer the Lakeview spot.
If you are looking for a good place to get some delicious thai food, Penny's is a great option. They have lots of great thai dishes here, all for very reasonable prices. The restaurant itself is small and well kept. The service is fast but if you go during a busy night, you might have to wait a bit because seating is limited. However, the wait is sure worth it because the food is really yummy and one of the best in town. Try to use public transportation, because parking can be hard to find in the area.
Im very disapppinted to know that the take out order I took was wrong. I stopped by at this location to get 2 SOUP NOODLES in a bowl. I know I ordered soup noodels because I am sick and can only eat soup. I came home to find that both orders were wrong. I called and spoke to the girl who took my order and she insisted that she took the order right. I corrected her and told her that I specifically ordered the SOUP noodles. I tehn asked for the manager, only to be told that the manager isnt there, and when i asked for the name of the owner, she couldnt even tell me then proceeded to tell me that there are two owners! It took a while before she can give me their names! When I asked for the time that their drivers will be available to pick these wrong orders and give me the correct ones, she gave me more excuses! I am very disaappointed about the service from this location and will not go back nor recommend this spot!
Please save your money and appetite and DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!
A good friend that I haven't seen in a while and myself decided to stop at this cute, quaint, and inviting thai restaurant for dinner, BAD IDEA.
For starters the service was sub-par, mediocre. The wait staff was hesitant to make suggestions regarding the entrees. I now understand why...
We started with the Japanese Gyroza. It was edible to say the least. They served it with bitter imitation soy sauce YUCK!
Because we were indecisive and uncertain regarding what to order (thanks to the "HELP" of the wait staff) we decided to share two entrees. The Pad Su Eu and Hot pepper Noodles were the winners or shall I say LOSERS!
I can describe the taste in one word NASTY!!!!!!!! The Pad su eu was SWEET. As though someone had dumped a pound of sugar into it and it was near black, burnt and sweet, GROSS!
The Red pepper noodle... tolerable but not much better than the pad su eu. I honestly couldn't tell if it was done. When it was brought to the table my friend immediately replied ?It looks bland and undone". The beef looked gray similar to that of dog food. The egg noodles were good but it was smothered in some unappealing transparent SALTY sauce. EW!
At the very end of the meal we were still hungry and decided to order more Gyroza because it was all we could appreciate there. I?m not sure if we were both completely mental but even those didn't taste too great the second time around.
The entire restaurant experience ruined the mood of my girl and I We were so excited to see each other and eat somewhere new and different. Let's just say the excitement passed.
This place is inviting and convenient but please SAVE YOUR DOLLARS AND APPETITE. IT?S NOT WORTH IT. IT'S NOT GOOD!!!!!
we keep on passing this restaurant and we decided to give it a try since there are always people eating there. But do not be deceive, the food is below average. I had the pad thai and I hated it, it is not an authentic pad thai, its so westernized, and my friend had the pepper beef and it was awful, it was so sweet that we thought they dump a sugar in there, i do not think pepper beef is supposed to be sweet. there are a lot of good thai food in chicago. go somewhere else it is so overrated.
Cons: horrible thai food, not authentic, go somewhere else for good thai food
I have consistently found that people either fall completely in love with Penny's or the complete opposite. That's why the reviews are so different. I'm a Penny's lover, but try it for yourself and ignore all these posts. It's certainly worth it for the money, even if it's not your favorite. Sliced Chicken, Gyoza and Pad Se Eu are some of the best. One note of caution - eat here - take out is NOT the same.
Pros: consistent, fresh ingredients, not overcooked
Good lord, this place is SO OVERATED it's pathetic. Anyone thats actually eaten various types of Asian food in real Asian type restaurants would know how lame all these Pennys noodle shops are. Their versions of any given dish are simply horrid with little or no connection to authentic Asian fare. The service aint all that great either. The employees shouldnt be munching out behind the counter when youre trying to order take out for example! Anyone who thinks this joint or their affiliates have good food should just go home & heat up a package of ramen noodles. Or better yet they should try going to some authentic Asian restaurants that are family owned & operated so they can learn the difference between the garbage at Pennys and the real thing. There have got to be at least 30 other places to choose from within walking distance.
Cons: , Overrated, It' like McDonalds
Didn't enjoy the food. The noodle soup was bland and lack vegetables...the beef was tender though. The Thai Springroll lack fresh mint and cilantro. The ambience was pleasant...liked the open kitchen. Parking was a hassle.
Pros: Ambience, Price, Fast Service
Cons: No Parking, Lack fresh ingredient
Penny's Noodle Shop offers filling dishes full of Asian flavor. Dine-in for a simple atmoshpere and lots of young locals. Carry-out the same great tastes and wait a quick ten minutes from the time you order. My favorite is the Red Beef Curry -- easy on the wallet and filling for the tummy.
Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Quick
Cons: Limited parking
I'm not really sure where all these ratings of "10" are coming from. I went to eat there and found their "Thai" food to be very unauthentic and quite bland. I went back a second time thinking maybe they had a bad night, but the food was pretty much the same as my first visit. Maybe because I am Asian, I am holding to a higher standard, but I've had MUCH, MUCH better Thai food in Lakeview/Boystown. Very noisy restaurant also.
This is one of the rare places where the staff is always pleasant, prompt, nice atmosphere, with great healthy food that brings me there twice a week. You'll enjoy the trip there and never hear a noisy L train passing overhead nearby......
Pros: Prompt Service, Great Food, Healthy
For Great Cheap Food Nothing Beats Penny's.
Stay away from the soups & stick to the noodles.
Pad Se & Lad Nar are simply awesome. Service is good & prices can't be beat.
Pros: cheap, great food, locations
for the last few visits to Penny's the rice has been very mushy. I think they are either keeping it longer or purchasing cheap rice.
Pros: price, service
Cons: wait, no parking
I searched Citysearch.com to look for fun places to eat, and tried out Penny's because it received such great reviews. But I was highly disappointed. The food was not very good, everything tasted slightly sweet or otherwise bland. I ordered the Rad Nha with chicken (sp.) The only good thing was the dessert, which I'm sure they did not make.
Pros: Cute atmosphere, Short wait to be seat
Cons: Inattentive service
My fave Thai restaurant in the city, I get take-out from there at least once a week!!! Definitely the best value!!!
Pros: value, food quality, best thai in chicago!
Cons: small dining room
Penny's could be one of the best restaurants in Chicago. I go there at least once a week. The Sheffield/Roscoe location is the best. Great atmosphere, awesome food. Pepper Beef, Sliced Chicken and Pad Thai are a sure bet! I wish I lived next door!
Pros: Good, Fast, inexpensive
Cons: None, zero, zilch
I really enjoy this place. YOu might have to wait a long time to get seated although it is worth the wait. It is good food, good service, and a good neighborhood place. It is nothing fancy but a great place to get a large portion of thai food. Can't beat it.
Penny's is the place for casual dining on a cheap budget. The portions are big enough to make two meals out of your entree. Their Hot Pepper Noodle remains the best Ive found in Chicago! I often get Pennys to go with little waitbeats fast food any day!
Pros: Friendly Staff, Large Portions, multiple locations
