The food was good and very fresh, not a bad value for the money. However, our server was awful: she would disappear for long periods of time, so getting drinks refilled was a challenge. It was my first time at a Flat Top Grill and I was with a party of 13, so since an 18% gratuity is added to parties of 6 or more, what incentive was there for our server to do her job. Also, it would have been very helpful if someone had been available while we were choosing our food and sauces for stir fry to answer questions about the process, since it is different.

Flat Top is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. The price is good for the amount of food you get...It's all you can eat! I have never had a bad meal and the fact that you get to choose your own fresh ingredients ensures that you like what you get. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

This restaurant is a little different than most. It is a fresh grill where you prep your on stir fry. You can choose rice or noodles and from an assortment of veggies, dairies and raw meats. Then the grillers prepare your food and it is delivered to your table.
And the neat thing about this restaurant is that you can prepare as many dishes as your stomach can handle.
The place is a little small so it is good to go during lunch or when it is less crowded.

We went for Breakfast at noon. Our waiter was clearly hungover. There was no order to how they cooked or served the food... One member of our party was done eating before my food was served over 40 minutes after I put in my bowl.... One member of our party was never served - not sure if they lost their bowl or what happened to it.... We finally just left because we couldn't wait anymore and this person had to eat just the muffins and fruit you can help yourself too... When we left the kitchen was so backed up you couldn't find room to set your bowl down on the front counter. If this is how they handle breakfast I can't imagine how terrible dinner service must be...

If you want breakfast go early because when the after church crowd shows up and slams the kitchen you'll be waiting, maybe forever, to get your food....

Flat Top Grill is so much fun. The food is fresh, colorful and delicious. As a former student at UIC, I was a regular at this location. They offer student discounts with proof of ID. No matter what diet or food plan you are on, this place has something for everyone. You are the chef, as you create your own food from the freshest ingredients and sauces. The Indian bread is light and flaky. My favorite is the Sweet and Sour soup with plenty of crunchy vegetables. It is a must for everyone to try the Chocolate Storm. This bittersweet chocolate dessert is divine. Highly recommended!! Right next door to Harpo Studios (aka Oprah's studios). Bring a ton of friends and show them what this place is all about!

Pros: Fun, Food tastes great, staff, variety, flavors, Student discounts, one trip vs. all you can eat prices, and desserts
Cons: Parking is limited

If you're on a low carb/veggie diet and you love stir fry, then Flat Top Grill is the place for you.

This restaurant chain is an all you can eat stir fry buffet. You stand in line to get your choice of rice or pasta (sans if you're on a low carb diet). Then you select your veggies, and sauce(s). Everything is available from peanut sauce to teriyaki sauce. You even get to select your meats (chicken pork, beef). Afterwards, you can add additional spices, and stuff life peanuts, croutons, etc. Then you can select how you want your meal prepared: as a soup, accompanied by Pita Bread, in mushu rolls, or even a salad. Finally, you drop off your selections at the grill counter; you go back to your seat and wait for your fantastic meal to be delivered!

The staff at this plasce is fantastic and ALWAYS very accomodating to special requests. This particular restaurant chain is located in the semi-quiet near west side of the Loop. It is across the street from Harpo studios too (Oprah).

PROS: Fantastic food, service, and sem-quiet location
CONS: Public transportation in the area is slow

My family ate at the Lake St. location. First, if you count calories, this place is for you. A huge board lists all of the ingredients, such as sauces, that are unique to Flat Top Grill. These are broken down by calorie count, nutritional analysis, even weight watchers points. Eating healthy is easy. The kids loved constructing their own meals; and since you choose the ingredients you like, there's no waste. Also, the customer service was a 10. Truely outstanding. The reviewer that griped about food allergies should know that clean woks are used for those people that have contamination concerns.

What a fabulous place, for any event you may have. Great for an intimate date -- the fun ambiance avoids first date awkwardness, but also fun for families and groups. Resonably priced, and wonderful food. Special dishes on weekends too.

This our "hangover cure" restaurant. We live walking distance to this West Loop place. We usually like to go when there's no line, 'cause its not worth the wait really. The format is "Mongolian BBQ" I can't imagine they do things like this in Mongolia. The deal is, you take a bowl and go down a buffet line of raw vegetables, noodles, rice, sauces, marinades and meats to create your own stir fry dish. They also have suggested recipes if you're not feeling too creative. At the end of the line you pass your dish to the cooks, you cook it all all up for you. The servers bring your dish to your table when you are done. Yummy, all you can eat. Go up again as many times as you want. Some might recommend going for lunch, since it's the same stir fry at a lower price.

I'm not definately not big on Thai food, I don't even like Chinese takeout!! BUT, I love FlatTop! You can make anything you want and it doesn't have to taste like Thai food. This is an inexpensive place where a group of people can go with all different tastes and everybody will enjoy.

I went to one of these when they first opened a few years ago (and enjoyed it). For some reason and I'm not sure why, I haven't been back. I went the other day and had a great time and a terrific meal. I got some great recommendations from our waitress on sauces and she was right on the money. It was a good experience.
