Excellent Hotel

by Marsha F. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,123

We will stay here again. This hotel was beautifully decorated, our suite was huge. The hotel was super nice and helped us find a bonded sitter for our daughter while we saw Wicked. Worth every penny!

Hotel Sax

by Ellien C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,317

The hotel was to expensive. I felt that I should have received better service. The quality of the establishment wasn't bad, but the service isn't great. I would not recommend them.

Great view

by M G. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 344

The rooms inside are average but the view is great. It has the blues mobile downstairs and a great bar. We also ate their one night and it was not bad. The best thing about it, is that is centrally located and within walking distance to many attractions and for a lot of people watching.

Great Hotel

by Maris A. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,131

I won a trip to this hotel and I must say it was beautiful. In the heart of Chicago it is walking distance to many attractions. It is a little high priced, but well worth it. Below is the concert hall and outside they have the Blues Brothers automobile. It also has a restaurant that has a great ambiance. I would definitely recommend it.

A much needed place after being at the House of Blues

by Dawn C. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,291

I live about 1-1/2 hours from Chicago. We try to go downtown whenever we can. I love the city. Every once in awhile we'll go the the House of Blues when there is someone we really want to see.

There was this one night when we had just a little bit too much fun and way to much to drink. Thank gosh, there was the House of Blues Hotel next door. How convenient is that?

We got ourselves a room so we didn't have to drive home. Our room was so nice. We had such a nice stay there. The price was no surprise since we were in the heart of the city.

I would definately stay here again. We got there pretty late and left early so I can't comment on the food or bar. But the staff was friendly and the facility was nice, I would recommend it.

cool music theme nice hotel

by David G. | insider Insider | Rank: 23,302

This is a great city hotel. The strength comes in with it's proximity to the House of Blues. It's especially fun to tie your hotel stay with a show at the House of Blues. However, aside from being in a cool area in Chicago, it is right above a cool bowling alley. Additionally, there is a cool jazz bar right in the lobby that is worth chillin out at.

Too cool for the room.

by columthursday

We popped into the Lounge at Hotel Sax Chicago before a show at House of Blues. The attitude at this place is unbearable. The tight shirt wearing, over-tanned, no-neck bartender looked me over from bottom to top to bottom before smirking and asking "wat can I getcha?" I ordered 5 drinks and handed him a one-hundred dollar bill. That was apparently enough to earn the privilege to sit at his bar.

Loved the Decor

by Jovnka1

The hotel was something different. Not the cookie cutter rooms in other hotels. The lobby bar was packed and fun every night. The location was great, close to everything. The rates were very low for the location. The restaurant in the lobby was terrible. There are much better places to eat close by.

Pros: Ambiance

Cons: $16 per person to work out

There's Nothing Like Good Sax ;-)

by tflucht

RIP, HOB Hotel. Now it's the Sax Hotel, and this past weekend was my first stay. What an interesting choice! This hotel is hip, from the lobby and reception areas, to the lobby bar, to the room decor. And they manage to pull it off, without seeming to try. My room was a decent size, impeccably decorated, with a huge bathroom. The shower had an oversized head, so you could take a drenching. This is a great feature, one more hotels should offer.

There were only two thing keeping it from a five star review. One, the toiletries were not replaced, so I had to ask for more at the desk (on a positive note, when I returned to my room, there was a small bag with two of each, so a nice recovery), and the concierge. I requested tickets for the Gospel Brunch at the HOB next door, and was told they were sold out. Frankly, my experience with concierges in other cities is that "sold out" is just the first step in their process of getting you the tickets. You may pay more, but they deliver. Not the case here. I find that inexcusable, considering the venue is next door, and a former affiliate. He didn't seem to even try. For a downtown hotel, I expect more. My advice would be to send that guy over to the Embassy Suites, and let him book aquarium tickets for the weekend families. Hire a real concierge, one that can get things done.

Pros: Decor, desk and valet service, location, ambience

Cons: Concierge

Horrible experience, WASTE OF MONEY

by colorist123

My boyfriend and I both worked on new years eve and day. Instead of the celebrations those days, we decided to have a romantic fun night at the House of Blues Hotel. Upon arrival the staff was very friendly, I thought I had made the right choice! As we entered our room, the view was nothing to brag about, we were staring at a parking garage. The robes and complimentary blues cd were no where to been seen. As we called downstairs to recieve these items, 20 minutes later, one robe arrived. Another thing i forgot to mention, I had paid 250 for a deluxe King suite. There was nothing deluxe about it. It was the size of a normal room at your standard Howard Johnson. The decore was fun though. We both are not the type to complain, so we just made the best of what we had.
After getting ready, we went to eat at Osteria Via Stato(highly recommended). After the wonderful dinner we arrived back at the hotel at 8:30, the KAZ bar that the house of blues hotel is known for was closed for construction. They never informed us of this ever. No big deal, we had other options around the area. After we came back from a few coctails at a piano bar, we decidded to get room service. It was only 10:30 PM, and they claimed that the were'nt doing room service because of lack of occcupancy at the hotel(i wonder why?). The room service claimed that they were open EVERY NIGHT until 2:30 AM.
It might seem like a waste of time to complain about all of this, but being in the customer service field myself, i was appaled. NO lounge, no room service, we recieved nothing in our room that was promised. WASTE OF MONEY, with NO extra little perks to make up for it.

Pros: Good decore

Cons: bad Value, bad service, you get nothing you are promised

Funky ambiance, in a good way!

by chitowngirl_reviews

If you're looking for something different and are a modern free spirit, this place is for you. Hotel accommodations are not your typical white linens and floral-- this place has bright colors, funk and attitude. It reminds me of a hotel I stayed at in San Francisco. The room was clean and there were cute ammenities. And you can't beat the location and the nightlife nearby. Great for a Chicago stay!

Pros: Overall experience, getting a room that's a little bit different

Cons: Parking, no gym

I would never stay here again!

by adam_123

I went to Chicago one year just for a fun weekend out. I decided to stay downtown which I haven't done for awhile. I decided to try out the House of Blues Hotel and it was a big mistake. I paid way too much for the room and the quality was horrible. For starters, my check-in was not very smooth, I got in my room and there were cigarette burns on the chairs. Yeah I paid like 300 bucks a night for this room and I shouldn?t have to sit on burnt chairs. I can kick myself for not saying anything; I probably would have received some sort of service because I did not get much of anything while I was there. I took a shower before going out again and there was some hair in the tub, the bathroom floor wasn?t the cleanest, I did not get my monies worth. I am glad for citysearch because I can finally say something. Don?t stay here, you would be better off somewhere else, really!

Pros: they have dog treats in the fridge! :) and you get a CD! WOW : /

Cons: poor service, kind of busy entrance, not fun

Great location behind Marina City

by joelrwilliams

This hotel located between Dearborn and State right behind the twin 'corncob' towers of Marina City is conveniently located to River North attractions. We stayed here four night during the 2006 Blues Festival. Staff was great, they held our luggage when we arrived at noon and our room wasn't ready yet. Had a problem with the card key when first trying to get into the room. Housekeeping employee working down the hall came over and helped us out...real friendly.

Funky decor may be more suited to younger folks. Bathrooms quite large for downtown hotel.

Bin 36 restaurant looked nice, but we didn't have the opportunity to eat there.

Located three blocks from State, Lake and Clark CTA stations with access to every major train line on the CTA. Also located two blocks from Michigan Ave.

Pros: Location, price

Want something different? Stay at the HOB Hotel!

by kelkiwi311

This hotel was very nice. The staff was helpful, the bathrooms were huge, the bathroom towels were huge, the area was nice and there was a lot around. The public transportation system was nearby. The room was very clean and about standard size. We had a great view, but we were on Floor 15 of 16, so that may be why. Some of the lower floors may not have a very good view. But its still a really nice place to stay!! Not recommended for families that have children due to there being no pool. But it's great for a weekend visit or business travelers!

Pros: Great Rooms!, Bar downstairs, Close to everything

Cons: No Pool

St. Patrick's Day

by MissEm67

My boyfriend surprised me with a trip To Chicago for St. Patrick's Day, and we stayed at the HOB. It was incredible. The staff was helpful and polite. The music at the club was very good. I love our room. So bright and cheery! We had a great view of the (green) river. The hotel is centrally located, so there are many places you can walk to rather than drive. I recommend it and cannot wait to stay there again.

Pros: Location, Service, Nighclub on Site

Cons: Room a bit Small, Too few drawers

Very busy

by suzispecial

The stay was brief, but great. The room was a treat - not just the same old stuff. Very colorful and busy. (Reminds me of New Orleans). Our view was good - got a corner room looking south to the river. Alot of amenities if you're willing to pay. They let me check out an hour later than usual so I didn't have to leave too early. I'd go again. Great for the tourists. ( I live here. :)

Pros: different, entertaining

Nice Place to Stay

by Hockeytownmom

The House of Blues Hotel was a nice place to stay. The room wasn't too big, but it was very clean. The bed comfortable- with down comforter and pillows. The bathroom was very clean. The view wasn't good, but the location was wonderful. It is within walking distance to everything. (just don't ask the staff for directions to anywhere y ou want to go because they give the wrong directions-you are better off looking at the map yourself. They do have a gym but you have to pay $10 to get in, which isn't right if you are a guest at the hotel. The KazBar was wonderful and romantic. The Bin36 restaurant had some great food, but was very noisy. The House of Blues restaurant/bar is right across the street and worth visiting just to check it out, but you are better off eating elsewhere.

Pros: Very Clean, Nicely Decorated, Huge Bathroom

Cons: No coffee maker, No View, $$ to go to gym

friendly people!

I travel all over, and I've never come across a friendlier staff than this one. My check-in was great and the concierge helped my anniversary dinner be PERFECT!!! The decor of the rooms is fun and funky, the Kazbar is just so cozy and intimate; it really helps that they have awesome bartenders! My husband and I had such a great time that we'll be back SOON.

Pros: fabulous staff, great rooms, great bar

Cons: no pool

Sweet Home Chicago

by firemanfetish

It was great!!! The hotel was just awsome. The bathroom was huge and the beds had down comforters. There are just so many extras with the room that make it a good value. It's close to everything and easy to get to. The best place to stay in Chicago. It's family oriented if your children and parents are open minded.

Pros: in room cd stereo, beautiful everything

Cons: no pool

GROOOVVVYYY!!

by baciball

Rarely do you visit a hotel where the staff remembers your name, regardless if you have stayed once or 20 times. The staff makes this hotel worth the visit. The KazBar does not feel, in the least, like a "hotel bar" and certainly is one of the only bars with comfortable couches! (check out the Sin Den)...overall, very groovy place and well worth the trip. Besides the fun stuff, they have the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and I am trying to track down how to get one for myself.

Pros: friendly staff, great lobby

Cons: parking

Going to the dogs

by mdinsmoor

Love the fact that they allow dogs (though mine much too rowdy and destructive to bring). Also the site of "Yappy Hour", with GREAT music right next door. What more could you want?

Pros: Often good deals, Great decor, HOB store

Cons: No nearby Starbux

Sweet home chicago

by seanapalooza

I was very pleased with my stay at HOB. I was in town for only 28 hours and needed to see as much as possible. The Concierge (Phillipe) knew exactly what I needed to do and see and they sent me on my way to a wonderful evening. I will admit I was skeptical when I read the low ratings but I went ahead and booked my reservation. I am glad I did. Every employee I came in contact with was very pleasant. I would recomend HOB to anyone.

Pros: Location, Large Bathroom, Friendly staff

Cons: thin walls, small lobby

Self-Absorbed

by muknlu

The hotel staff is the rudest I have encountered in months of hotel stays in Chicago; you are frequently ignored at the front desk; it's as if the staff can't be bothered with customers. Room service is very overpriced. Hallways are noisey with loud drunken hotel guests at all hours and complaints about it to the front desk are ignored. Staff attitude translates to they think they are better than their guests and we are an inconvenience.

Pros: nice location, decorative, In Room CD player

Cons: rude staff, overpriced, dismissive attitude

Second Chance

by Trbyrnes

Have statyed here about 4 times. Each time was a problem. Staff never willing to assist. Bell men ask to assist with baggage at the point you are at the elevators, not at the curb. Went to check in. There were 3 front desk staff. One person checking in ahead of me. The 2 extra desk staff did not ask to check me in, I was required to wait until the person in fron of me was finished. Although the other 2 desk persons were not assisting anyone. Room Service was served cold. Upon calling the Room Service staff, I was told sorry, nothing can be done. Ordered a hamburger, got a call back saying they were all out of hamburger. Then ordered a turkey club, was delivered a ham club.

Pros: Funky

Cons: Poor Service, Don't Care Attitude

staff sent us to the worst part of town

by Emily_Chubbuck

This hotel was to expensive for how rude the staff was. when we got there they charged us double the price the hotel originally quoted us. Then wanted to charge us extra for canceling on of the rooms. 8 people ended up sharing one room for financial reasons. then the staff gave us wrong directions to the famous glass exhibit and we ended up in the very worst part of town and then she wasn't even apologetic about it. The coffee guy wasn't even friendly. I do not recomend this hotel to anyone and I would never go back there.

Pros: uniquely decorated, cd player in room

Cons: rude, over priced, not fun

keep on top of it!

by camylong

Staying at the House of Blues Hotel is an interesting visit, with the unique decor and easy accessibility to area attractions, but when the hotel is booked and busy with coventioneers, keep on top of the staff for your "free" goodies like the daily newspaper, the free CD, and complimentary bottle of water or wine. Other than that, as busy as the House of Blues (venue), the hotel bar and Bin 36 restaurant are on a nightly basis, it is relatively quiet once you get into your room. The cabin room is small, but the restroom makes up for it, and I've yet to stay in a regular room but it should be slightly larger then the cabin room.

Pros: decor, close to attractions

Cons: slightly expensive, great amenities

Fun Atmosphere

by Joy

I've stayed here probably 20+ times and the majority have been very positive. The staff is friendly and helpful and the decor is great. Prices are pretty standard but they do increase drastically when conventions are in town. It's also in walking distance to nearly everything downtown. One thing to note, there is no tea or coffee in the rooms which is a bummer. However, the bar does make a good martini so that makes up for it!

Pros: Location, Free CD, Nice Rooms

Cons: No Coffee or Tea
