I hate reading these recent reviews where they 'Jill-bash' -- as 8+ year customers, my wife Jacky and I have gone there through dating...to marriage...to children...to currently pregnant again, and Jill has seen us through it all becoming a friend as well as touchstone for our weekend brunch or quick weekday breakfast or lunch when we can steal away. She LOVES kids; always makes our daughters and all other children welcome, and the only time she 'snarks' is when yuppies (and uh - yeah, I'm one. I confess.) refuse to drop their attitudes of entitlement when they step in there (no talking on cell phones and not understanding that 'full' party attendance is mandatory being the two big rules). She's a breath of fresh air for us, and we love hearing the staff's stories (they're all great too - esp. Felix) -- and oh yeah: the FOOD -- crabby eggs benedict, oatmeal, bacon, stuffed french toast -- all must-taste draws...and great sandwches and salads for lunch. We have always come to Toast...and we always will...but Toast without Jill would be a sad place, indeed.

Pros: Pros: Food, Staff and Vibe

Cons: Cons? Fellow customers who just don't get it.

I had heard this was a good breakfast place...so my wife and I went there in the morning to celebrate a birthday with another couple. Upon our entry, there was a table for 4 open...so we thought perfect! However, the waitress/manager was extremely unfriendly and told my wife and I to sit down on the bar stool and wait till our other two friends walked in. She refused to let us sit at the open table, even though our friends were just parking. Before our friends could arrive, another couple walked in and the waitress gave the table for 4 to them!! We inquired why and she said that is just our policy. She became even ruder at this point and essentially did not care if we left. She refused to give us her name and simply walked away.
The other posts talking about poor customer service are TRUE!!!!
Do not bother going to this place....you will be disappointed. You may even end up eating food that has been 'altered' by the "manager"
Don't take my word...read all the other reviews on Google reviews.

Pros: decent food?

Cons: HUMILIATION

Jills the owner/hostess is the rudest person I've ever encountered at a restaurant. Its sad she feels the need to snap and give icey looks to her customers. My friends and I literally did nothing, just simply told her we had a party of 7. She immediately snapped and said "we can not accomidate you". We didnt mind splitting up into groups, so we suggested this to her, she rolled her eyes and said "fine, i guess." Im not sure what warranted this rude and abrassive response. I was embarassed I had recommended this spot to my friends. Once I told a few co-workers what had happened, several of them agreed, you have to stomach Jill the owner/manager in order to eat at Toast. I say skip stomaching the rude owner, just go to the Toast in bucktown. They will make you feel right at home and will great you with a smile. Let me know once she is fired, then I'll consider going back.

In my opinion there are several other breakfast joints around the area that have better food & better service than they have at toast.

Tshsu777! You should be ashamed of yourself. Writing horrid reviews that denounce people and call them
"Nxzi"s? That is ignorant and stupid especially around this time of year! Toast happens to me my favorite place to go to in this city. The people there are genuine, and the food is so worth the wait! Jill H IS the reason I go to Toast. She makes the place so inviting. The atmosphere is so full of life, and I feel like time stops when I am there. I can't rave enough about the food, the people, and the great person who takes care of us all when I am there. I came on this site to write a wonderful review and read that garbage written by Tshsu777. People like that are never happy. Check out Toast for yourself! They are the best. Get to know the staff, and you'll enjoy the experience more. I'll be the Indian at the bar..She calls me Hindi Mindi. Say hi if you see me.

Pros: Great space, cool tunes, great food. Grab the Eggnog Pancakes!

the manager's name is Jill. Remember that. Mid 40's. Well dressed. High heels.

She's the brunch Nxzi at Toast. Go ahead and read all the reviews--you'll see see plenty of comments about the manager.

I don't want to go through the specifics and relive the horrible experience i had. Go there for the food. And Get a side of attitude.

Toast is a tremendous Brunch/Lunch spot, we are there twice/week (minimum!). The staff gives you a laugh while you east the most amazing breakfasty grub. It's well worth the wait on the weekends.

Best Eggs Benedict in town - the Prosciutto is the key as is the Hollandiase which has a unique flavor that is just pefect.

All the food tastes exactly like you would expect it to - anything you order will be sure to delight and the cool, super-casual setting makes it the ideal joint for a Sunday morning. The staff is awesome; they always go out of their way to be nice to our kids and they have never messed up our order - never! The hostess is fabulous and knows everybody's name and does a superb job of creating a great vibe, every time.

The radio will be on, the crowd will be happy and the food will knock your socks off, enough said.....

I should have left after being told there was an hour wait, because the food was NOT worth the wait. Nor was the service. The hostess was rude and my waitress actually brought the bill minutes after my food was served. Forget about the second cup of coffee, this pushy restaurant would rather give your seat to the next customer.

If you head to Toast plan on waiting an hour and do not expect any customer service. It was a big disappointment.

Its easier to list what Toast is NOT:
1. Toast is NOT a place to take your elderly grandparents on a weekend
2. Toast is NOT the place for you if you like to drink coffee and have LONG conversations at the expense of other hungry diners waiting to eat
3. Toast is NOT the place to eat if you just purchased a living room set at Ikea and you want to bring it inside with you while you eat.

What toast is simply GREAT food at a GREAT price, which explains the insane wait, the extremely busyness of the staff, the desire to seat other waiting hungry diners while you finished your meal 30 minutes ago, and a hostess that must run her seating as a drill sergeant.

Is it perfect? No. Is it worth it? YES!

My daughter and I went for brunch this past Wednesday to Toast and found it to be a wonderful experience. Not only was the food excellent, but our waitress who I believe is the manager as well ,made our afternoon fun. She had a great personality and was extremely accommodating. We walked into the restaurant near closing time and we weren't rushed in the least. As a matter of fact, when we finally left (and we were the very last to leave) she offered us coffee for the road. We are looking forward to dining at Toast in the near future and we are fortunate enough to have the same cute, fun waitress.

Honestly I used to enjoy Toast (even with the LONG waits), but I would NEVER go there again. It is true the food is decent, but you can get decent eggs, pancakes, or french toast all over the city of Chicago, but what you won't find anywhere else is such a RUDE, condescening, and unprofessional manager. The owner of this establishment should be ashamed of himself for having a woman like this represent his business. I always try to bring out of town guests to this restaurant for brunch as it has been one of my favorites and close to my home, but I have never been treated the way I have at a restaurant in this city as I was this weekend. I actually pitty the host who reports to this woman who even treats him with no respect.

Save yourself time and patience and don't even bother stopping at Toast. Head to Nookies around the corner, or Orange, HB, The Original Pancake House, or even Uncommon Ground all of which are great for breakfast and treat every customer with respect!

Pros: Great Breakfast

Cons: Nasty, Rude, Condescending Manager!!!!

.

The food is good however not worth what you have to go through to get a seat in this overly sat, upitty cramped joint. If you are looking to enjoy yourself at breakfast...DO NOT GO TO TOAST. You will wait forever to get a tiny table and you will for sure get a lot of attitude from the overly tanned HOSTESS just to be rushed to order by the wait staff and inhale your food so they can turn the table.

So maybe this place has some good home fries, but they certainly aren't worth the rude attitude and the uneasiness you feel in this restaurant. Whoever, the hostess is (she can't be the owner b/c an owner wouldn't be dumb enough to treat their customers so poorly) should be fired!! My husband and I went there with our baby and were told in NOT a nice tone..."to leave our carriage on the street". We have a rather expensive stroller and didn't think it was a reasonable request, so we went somewhere else. Then I went to breakfast with my girlfriend there a few days later. Within 5 minutes of sitting down our waitress asked us 6 times if we were ready to order. Then when they saw we were chatting and drinking our coffee after our meal, they started clearing our table and the water glass I was drinking from as well. I had to ask for the water back. Then the nasty hostess seated a party of 3 next to us and in a loud voice apologized for them not have more room!? My friend finally suggested that we leave because she felt so uncomfortable. I told her we needed to fine a new breakfast spot. There should be a sign on the door "No Children Allowed & 30 Minute Time Limit".

I used to love the food at this place, but on my most recent visit to the Lincoln Park location I saw something that turned my stomach.

I was sitting at a table near the line and watched as the busboys (more than 1) poured water from half-drunk drinking glasses into a water pitcher on the counter as they cleared dishes. Then, I watched as they took that exact same pitcher half full of backwash water and came to my table (and others) and filled our water glasses. It was disturbing. I will never be back. If they're doing that in the dining room, what are they doing in the kitchen where customers CAN'T see?????

Very horrible place. They made us wait for 35 mins and then moved people who came after us before. And the worst part is we were holding a baby. We left that place without eating and went to a great tapas place. I would not go to this place if your color is any different from white plus with kids...b/c we don't want our kids to see this kind of human nature.

I just went back to my favorite brunch place;Toast on Webster St. I love to indulge so I had the pancake smothered slam, and of course I couldn't finish it My partner had the Pumpkin Pie Pancakes, and I ate most of his instead of finishing mine. We ate at the bar which is my favorite place to sit. I love talking to Jill behind the counter. She's stylish, sweet and worth the wait. That sums up the entire environment there. It's like coming over to your friend's house for brunch with great food always waiting for you. I wish I could cook like that, but until I learn I am coming back to Toast! Great service, great food, relaxing atmosphere, and a hip feel.

I have to say, I have been to many restaurants around the country and Chicago for breakfast and TOAST is at the top. The eggs benedict, stuffed french toast and the breafast burrito were all superb. WIsh the potatoes we ordered had a little more flavor and more done but still were good. The music combined with the great service added to the experiece after a late night the evening before. We loved it so much we asked for the manager (Jill) and she treated us like we were long lost friends. Will definately go back everytime we can. Be prepared for a long wait but well worth it!!!

I honestly do not know how anyone in a hospitality establisment be so rude. We went there for a late lunch on sunday and were told that there would be an hour and a half wait even though there weren't too many people waiting. We waited patiently in a corner where we had been usherd into like we were cattle, by the rude manager Jill.
We were finally seated after 45 mins. But then they refused to put a high chair next to our table for the baby we had with us. Apparently there wasn't enough room next to our table. I agree the place is tiny but then why was there a line of high chairs at the bar trying to barricade the people waiting from getting to the empty bar.
The food was ok. Nothing great. Could'nt substitute anything or change anything and the Bloody Mary's were totally watered down. Extremely pretentious!
Finally when we were leaving I mentioned Jill's rudeness to the guy who had seated us. He went and informed her that I'd complained and she burst out into a huge laugh look at us. I have a hospitality background and that is just not the way to behave.
If i'd known this would be the case we'd have gone to Nookies too which is close to Toast and way better!!!
Really disappointing.

Toast rocks! It is a very small restaurant, which makes getting a table difficult some times, but well worth the wait. The food is to die for!! My highest recommendation would be the Eggs Benedict. WOW!! Really thin ham and GREAT hollandaise sauce. They also have great pancakes and omelets. The food is all around awesome! Service is good and very funny. The lady at the door is a riot.

Check it out!!

The food is good, but not worth the attitude you get from the staff. Be prepared to be treated like you owe something to be there - food isn't nearly that good to be treated like that.

This place was awesome for a relaxed weekend breakfast. They had a great gourmet selection of variations on typical breakfast food. The portions were good sized and the ingrediants were fresh and tasty. The prices were pretty fair as well. This is one of my favorite 3 breakfast places in Chicago for fresh, hip breakfast food.

Absolutely horrible Service! The food was amazing but I went there to meet a friend I had not seen in a long time. Within 20 minutes, they had removed my coffee cups and all the dishware. Within 30 minutes, the wait staff was hinting they wanted us to leave. Within 40 minutes, we were asked to move to the bar as they had a line outside. I have never in my life been rushed out of restaurant so other customers could be served, it was just plain rude!

I have been to Toast twice. The food is fantatsic. This past weekend I was in town for St. Patrick's Day with two friends. I told them how good the food was and that we had to get there. When we did, there was a wait. 90 minutes. We made a quick sidetrip and returned just in time to get called to our table. My friends said it was worth the wait. I couldn't agree more. The food was great. I recommend the Stuffed French Toast. The ingredients are so fresh and top shelf. We had a great experience with the service. I made a point to let the manager know how good everything was and she was quite nice. Perhaps others have been too put off by the wait. The place is small. There is no denying that. What you must keep in mind is that this place is always busy and people contniue to come back despite having to wait up to 2 hours to get a seat. I cannot think of a better endorsement than that for Toast's cuisine.

My wife and I have been trying a new brunch restaurant every week, which we find by reading these reviews. After reading these reviews our curiosity was piqued. We just had to see for our selves if the service and the manager could actually be THAT bad. Well, we were pleasantly surprised at how good the service actually was, from both staff and manager. This is a tiny place, in a full residential area, you are going to have to wait for a seat. Get over it! If the staff seemed rude to you it's probably because they are busy and have to deal with whinners like you every 5 minutes. Also most restaurants wont seat tables until the entire party is there. Think about it, what if your friends dont show up for another 30 minutes. That table could have been sat and served and reset in that time. If you dont like to wait then go to McDonlads. The food here is Excellent and the service is very good and friendly. We will definately be coming back!

Pros: Great food and service

Cons: parking

.

I was in town visiting my family and we went to TOAST for brunch. They said the wait would be 45 minutes and they ended up seating us in only 15 mintues. We had super nice service and the pacing of our meal was fine. I think that people in Chicago expect to be treated like KINGS and QUEENS and in the real world- service can be rough/ rude. Lighten up Chi-town folk! Food wise: The strawberry French Toast was great and the Eggs Ben. were really tasty. Our Bloody Mary's were rather weak, but other than that- our food was great!

I had to write this review after reading all of the other negative ones about the manager. We have been to toast at least 10 times in the past year and a half and the female manager has always been super friendly and accommodating. We have a 15 month year old son and they have welcomed us since he was 1 week old. I really was shocked when I read these other negative reviews....Toast has always been a great place for us to go. Food is great and so is service. Try it out before you make the judgement.

Pros: Manager, Service, Food

Cons: Parking, Small

.

Food is above average breakfast food. Ingredients are fresh and all the dishes are delicious. A couple of times I got in right away, but one time there was a 2 hour wait!? I'm wondering if the hostess was judging the people I was with and being rude. This place is worth it if you can get seated right away, if not there are other breakfast places near by.

Pros: Food

Cons: Wait and possibly attitude

.

I don't usually write bad reviews either but this place was so incredibly rude! We went in with 2 children and right away they were giving us dirty looks. Everytime one of the waitstaff walked by our table, they gave us disgusted looks. I would never go back. The food is average, definetly not worth the attitude. I can not believe that they are still in business.

Pros: No pros!

Cons: Rude waitstaff and NOT kid friendly!

.

Normally I don't like to write bad reviews especially about local places. However, I went to Toast, not once, but twice and the experience only got worse! I cannot believe this place is described as "cheery" and "kid friendly." I also cannot believe that a place like this is still in business. Perhaps the repeat customers like to be rushed through their meal deal with a staff doesn't really know about their menu and is unapologetic to be out of basic items like cream for your coffee. And, to top it all off, the manager has a pretentious air about her. Unless they get rid of the attitude, there's too many other yummy places to eat.

Pros: creative menu

Cons: RUDE MANAGER, SLOW WAIT STAFF

The food is tasty. BUT can you tolerate the loud, foul, rude, "manager" who is usually somewhat scantly dressed. WOW!! I have been to toast about 10 times. Never fails--she storms in, almost immediately changes the music to something like....Pink Floyd or horribly depressing Phil Collins...and cranks the volume to an ear-piercing volume. All of this while you are receiving your food incredibly slow, and enjoying her screaming at the wait staff, AND if you are lucky enough--- even you and your guests.
Also, she will NOT hesitate to push YOUR table out, in order to move someone else in, SO EAT QUICK!!
Once I had placed an order to go and after half an hour, she realized the order had never been placed, so she said "the order is on us...sorry-" and then promptly charged my c.card anyway.
NOT WORTH THE TORTURE!!! I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS PLACE HAS BEEN ABLE TO REMAIN OPEN IN LINCOLN PARK.

Cons: EVIL MANAGER, SUPER LOUD MUSIC, SLOW

WORST service I have ever had! The restaurant opened late, there was no milk or cream for the coffee, the juice was warm and they compensated by giving a glass of ice and it took 20 mins to get the check because the waitress was too busy with her boyfriend to pay attention that we needed to go. I never write reviews but I had the worst experience here and had to say something.

Met 2 other girlfriends for breakfast, looked great inside, we were warmly welcomed upon entering. One of my friends is on a special diet and inquired about a few menu items to which our server had no idea...almost as if she had never seen the food. We each placed our order within a few moments toast or should I say warmed bread was on the table. When our food did arrive nothing came for my friend on the diet. The servers response was "oh did you want that?" 10 minutes later her cold salmon salad arrived. Our check was dropped after that (we had barely started eating). Never did our server check back to see how everything was . I won't be spending money there nor recommending toast. There are too many great places for breakfast with quality service and great food to give toast a second chance.

Food is ok, but the service is consistently rude. Don't expect to have a leisurely breakfast - they have been known to hurry diners and kick them out.

Yumm....the french toast is out of this world, I'm coming in to town again in December, and I've already made space on my calender to go here for breakfast! The service takes a while, but why not catch up with old friends while u wait. I definitely would recommend this place....all the other people are just haters...And I'll appreciate Toast more because of their take on children in the restaurant!

We arrived in Chicago for 4 nights. We had done our research on the best places to eat and experience Chicago so we carefully selected the restaurants we would visit (breakfast being our favorite meal out)TOAST was our 1st breakfast and WOW. The stuffed french toast melted in your mouth, the goat cheese omelete with spinach was just the right amount of savory flavour to enjoy with another special dish the fruit and mascarpone cheese pancakes topped with pine nuts (sounds crazy but i will be trying to get the recipe)The food was fabulous so much so that we came back again. We had other restaurants that sounded good but all 4 of us enjoyed the food and the staff, especially Jill and Baker(whom we thought were just alot of fun. It was our 1st time in Chicago we loved it and were going to go back, and of course to toast for breaky.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toast is amazing!!! The French Toast stuffed w/mascarpone is the best thing that happened to breakfast. The place is cozy and cute. The service was fantastic. They even gave me a coffee to-go. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu.

TOAST IS A FANTASTIC RESTAURANT WITH DELICIOUS AND FRESH FOOD AND FRIENDLY, HELPFUL STAFF. HAVING WORKED IN THE HOSPITALITY AND FOOD INDUSTRY FOR MANY YEARS, I KNOW A CHOICE PLACE PLACE WHEN I SEE IT AND KNOW WHY THERE ARE SO MANY IMITATORS. PERHAPS THERE IS AN AGENDA BEHIND THE POOR REVIEWS POSTED ON YOUR WEBSITE FROM LAST YEAR?? aLL I KNOW IS THAT TOAST HAS BECOME AN INSTITUTION ENJOYED BY ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY FOR YEARS.

I came to this place the day I found my apartment in Chicago. I thought the humor as I sat at the bar was a bit rude and offensive but had the displeasure of reconfirming that on the only 2 other occasions I have been there with friends. Both times after, the same bartender woman has felt the urge to yell obscene things to customers or other staff that she knows, and even so much as coming to our table to "remind us others are waiting for our table" as we are still eating. The food is decent but hardly worth the experience of poor, uninterested service in a small, crowded space. Forget however trendy it may be to go here - it's just not cool.

I don't usually feel compelled to go online but the service I received at Toast this morning is worth mentioning. The manager on duty really needs an attitude adjustment. We arrived at 8 am to meet friends for breakfast; it was crowded but not packed. Our friends had beaten us there and had sat down already; apparently the restaurant has a policy of not reseating tables. We found out because the manager basically barked at us repeatedly, "I am NOT moving them!" -- referring to our friends. We weren't even really demanding to be sat with them, merely inquiring why we couldn't sit together when there was an open 4-top. She just barked out her refrain, pointed to the back and told us to take a table. We left. Good riddance.

WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. THEY HAVE THE BEST FRENCH TOAST AND EGGS WE HAVE EVER HAD. TRY THE FRENCH TOAST WITH STRAWBERRY FILLING FOR A CHANGE! WE HAVE BEEN TO BOTH LOCATIONS AND PREFER THE WEBSTER LOCATION. iT IS THE ORIGINAL, HAS BETTER SERVICE AND MUCH MORE CHARM.

I really enjoy going out to breakfast and given the line at Toast I thought I was in for a treat. Boy was I disappointed. I don't mind a little creative twist on the traditional breakfast foods but they take it way too far. The combinations of ingredients are just not good. Plain yogurt on pancakes? Yuck! I could not finish my meal and I felt nauseous the rest of the day. There are so many better places in the city to eat breakfast (like Orange, Bongo Room, etc.) I just don't get the appeal of Toast.

Truly the best french toast in the world, BUT... the staff is so incompetent I will never go there again. They are rude and slow. They act like they're doing you a favor by letting you eat there. We were told we had a 20 minute wait. After an hour, we saw people leaving who had arrived after us and had been seated and finished eating. We were told that they had a new waitress and they didn't want to overseat her and we were supposed to sit in her area. So instead of sitting us in another server's area, they made us wait over an hour till she was ready for us. UNBELIEVABLE!

Also, it's hot as hell inside and they play the music way too loud. Like I said, I'll never go back.

Although the mascarpone cheese-filled french toast is the best I have ever had, I will NEVER go to Toast again! The wait is intolerable, the service is consistently slow and rude, and the music is WAY too loud. Also, every time I have been there in warm weather, the air conditioning was not on, which made for a very unpleasant experience. It's too bad, since the food is excellent and reasonably priced. I have brought countless visitors and acquaintances to Toast, raving about the food, but have always left frustrated by the experience and embarrassed to have recommended the place. In the end, the food just isn't worth it.

This is a great cozy Lincoln Park breakfast/brunch place. They serve unique French toasts (e.g. Mascarpone stuffed). The restaurant itself is tiny & the service is average, however, the food makes up for a lot it. The wait is long on weekends, so I would recommend a late brunch or weekday visit, if possible.
