Standard India Restaurant is a down to earth, genuinely friendly place to go if you love Indian food and great service at a very affordable price.

I went to this place after a long time and the place rocked. We went with a diverse crew, with discerning tastes and the buffet selections were awesome. They had the most popular dishes and they all tasted great. Tandoori chicken was moist and delicious. The saag paneer was to die for. The gulab jamun are still giving me a sugar high ?? they were so awesome.

The buffet is replenished quickly ?? they never have stuff sitting out, unlike other Indian restaurants that we have been too. For example, we mentioned that the samosas were running low, and BAM!!!, within a few minutes, the servers brought out piping hot fresh samosas directly to our table ?? they didn??t want us to get up and be inconvenienced. We also mentioned that we wanted a killer spicy sauce to accompany our food ?? guess what ?? they went back ?? told the chef to create a special killer sauce and brought it to our table ?? no charge. That??s what I call phenomenal service.

Did I also mention FREE Parking!!! Standard India Restaurant just started doing this. People used to casually park behind the restaurant; however, Standard India Restaurant has officially started paying the city to have use of the lot so that all their customers can park there. Since I sometimes drive in, I no longer have to worry about finding a parking spot ?? which is a HUGE bonus ?? plus, shhhhhhhhhh, after eating at Standard India Restaurant, I can always go check out a couple of lounges in the neighborhood and leave my car in the parking lot ?? little to no monitoring ?? but word of caution, after 12:00 am, the city starts towing from their lot.

Another thing ?? these guys are ?? BYOB. Yes, that??s right, you got it ?? bring your own. We went to the 1000 liquors store nearby and brought a bucket of international beers and brought them to Standard India Restaurant and figured out which ales went best with what.

Oh, this is what I thought was pretty cool. Standard India Restaurant is now supporting the local art scene. Very very cool. Being an artist myself, I am tired of the corporate world benefiting. I spoke to the owners and they said that all proceeds from the sale of the artwork went directly to the artist. Now that is what I call nice. Here is another thing ?? these cats know what they are doing. I even started to notice that their sauce cups are biodegradable. They told us that they are going green and that over the net few months, we will start noticing change on how they will be helping the environment. Once again ?? very cool.

Just one problem - if you go on Fridays or Saturday evenings, be prepared to wait for a little bit, especially if your crew is huge - because the place is packed. I recommend going on more mellow evenings, like during the week.

Pros: Buffet ROCKS!!!!

Cons: Too many people on Fridays and Saturdays

I would ALWAYS go to Standard India restaurant when I still lived in Chicago. I relocated to Philadelphia almost 5 years ago, but, miss my hometown restaurants. Here, it's a GREAT DEAL for the lunch and dinner buffet. I would have to eat lightly before going to Standard. I love the buffet, because there's a good variety and is sure to please the novice or experienced diner. Wonderful Vegetarian soup, Samosas, Tandoori Chicken, Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, to name a few of the dishes. Vegetarian and Vegan-friendly. I shall be back when I next visit Chicago.

I have been there several times for the lunch buffet on the weekends and it is always delicious! There are options for everyone, including vegans and vegetarians. The price is right and the food is plenty! Definitely worth a try :-)

Please refer to the review of Sabrina Doll on 3/18/2008 about Standard India Restaurant ( Mine) while Ms. Doll is explaining her awful experience for eating twice at STAR OF INDIA (My Competitor ) and instead of putting that to the respective restauranr ( STAR OF INDIA) you put in STANDARD INDIA RESTAURANT, I do request you to do the correction, and not hurt me for your mistake,
I hope you have the business ethics, and correct at asap as it is hurting my business

I have been to Star of India twice in the last six months and have had two completely different experiences. The first time was on a Sunday evening in early December. The buffet was stocked quite nicely with most of the Indian staples that one would expect. The food is lightly spiced,( probably a concession to American palates), but was quite good nonetheless. The prices are quite reasonable for the area. The second time that i was there was in late February. This time around, the dining room was dirty, the buffet was a wasteland with only a handful of remaining choices that were cold. Proper holding temperatures were not being maintained on the buffet table. I'm a reasonable person, and thought that maybe they had just come off a busy lunch and needed some time to recover. But despite lingering for an hour hoping that they would bring out a fresh bunch of butter chicken, but it was never to be. Standard India restaurant has the dubious distinction of being the only buffet that i've ever walked away from still hungry. So I'm really conflicted as to whether I'd go back. I realize that even the best places have off days, and it could've just been a fluke. So based on my first experience, I'd say I'll give it another shot.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! The buffet is full of delicious Indian favorites--many are vegetarian. The service is kind. The prices are great! No-frills atmosphere, but I find this to be part of its appeal...

I love Standard India! I have tried a lot of other Lakeview indian restaurants including Raj Dabar, Star of India, and Indian Grill - I think Standard India has the best food - and is the cheapest! They are also very veggie friendly and have at least 6 all Veg entrees in their buffet at all times. They also have 2 meat dishes each time (they rotate), and great appetizers (samosas, pakoras, chicken tikki, and nan) and dessert (rice pudding and fried cheeseballs). They only room for improvement they have is in the ambience of the restaurant itself - it resembles kind of a hole in the wall place, spare decoration ect. They are conveniently located right next to the belmont El.

When it comes to Indian buffets, Standard India buffet gets it right. They strike a nice balance between the vegetarian items and the meaty ones. While they have classics like Nan and Tandoori Chicken, you can expect to see curried lamb on the menu as well. They have the right amount of food on the buffet for the price. Also, nothing seems like it has been sitting too long. Everything is tasty including the two dessert options.

Their location on Belmont Ave. is terrific since it's very accessible by public transportation. The staff is very friendly as well.

I really love the lunch buffet here--everything is served hot and the flavors are bold. The atmosphere isn't much to talk about, but it's comfortable. Service is prompt and gracious. It's one of my favorite lunch spots in the neighborhood.

Pros: Good Indian buffet, Reasonable prices, Near the El

In Short
The decor is no-frills, but the budget chow's the draw anyway. The buffet is by far the best deal here; it's loaded with classics like samosas, pakoras (vegetable fritters), tandoori chicken, spicy lamb vindaloo and…
