That was my first visit to Chicago. I stayed near this restaurant. My co worker suggested me to their food. Their food is the best Italian food I've ever tasted. Friendly services with huge variety to select from. It is my regular hangout and I never felt bored or exhausted when I am there. Best for everyone. I will definitely go there when visit Chicago again.

This place used to be a fun, popular byob joint with large portions of mediocre food, nice servers. Now, they have an incredibly rude manager who likes to gloat and smirk and give away reserved tables if the entire party is not present at exactly, and I mean exactly, the time of the reservation. If you want to stuff your face with pasta and red sauce buy the stuff yourself; if you want the full Caro Mio experience hire some middle school kid to come to your home and be rude to you to make him feel better about himself.

Caro Mio is romantic, friendly and totally unpretentious. I love it! The guys who own Caro Mio are very friendly and welcoming. The've often come up with recommendations for me when I couldn't decide what to order, and the food has been awesome every time. The little storefront setting is cozy and fun. It's a special occasion dinner at an inexpensive price.

Cons: it's small so there's not a ton of seating

Some friends and I had reservations on a wed. evening at seven p.m.there and we were running a little bit late. We arrived about seven minutes after seven p.m gave the greeter our name in which the reservation was under and he told us since we were late our reservation had been cancelled. He was very rude and unprofessional. This was supposed to be a great evening out with old friends to celebrate a birthday, and he started our night out on a bad note.

Can't believe I haven't been here sooner; since I moved into the Ravenswood neighborhood in May. Ambiance is small, quaint, romantically decorated and lit. Italian food served is wonderfully diverse and interesting; and, all seemed excellent. What more could ask for -- how about BYOB for an Italian Restaurant?? Believe it or not, it is (and, even harder to believe, with NO corkage fee). But, you doubters say, don't they just raise their prices to make up for it. Nope -- prices seemed average for fine Italian dining. ($15-17 for pasta dishes; and, 18-22 for chicken/meat/seafood dishes). How wonderful.

Whether we are there once a month, or once a year, the owner greets us like old friends. Beautiful and calming. Always fresh flowers, always new art on the walls. You couldn't ask for a better neighborhood retreat. Bring your appetite, you will never leave hungry, and usually will have something leftover for lunch tomorrow. The gnocci is the best around.

What a huge disappointment this place was! We have been going there, infrequently, but over a period of about 5 years and it has really gone down hill. Wow! Really terrible food and we were "hustled" by the staff to eat and get out fast as it was Saturday night and I guess they wanted our table.
FIrst of all - the bread was stale and un-appetizing looking - just large hunks of white bread. Then our appetizer was awful - bland, sauce was tasteless, mushroom seemed boiled rather than grilled and what is with the SALT??? Everything was sooooo salty it was almost inedible.
My risotto was so ugly to look at - just a huge plate overflowing with rice - it could have fed 1/2 of the Fifth Army and sooo salty - my companion had a pasta dish that was so salty he felt almost ill afterwards although he did say the pasta was cooked very well - it was just the salt that ruined it. Plus not even a garnish with the risotto - ugh!
We will never be back.

Our food was fantastic, our waiter was funny, and the atmosphere was cozy and dim, yet colorful. There's a lot of seafood on the menu, and all of it looked good. Our portions were huge, easily enough for two. We couldn't stay for dessert, but overall it was fantastic; we'll definitely eat there again soon. BYOB = awesome (no corking fee, either); also there's a large parking lot half a block away. Technically it's for employees of the medical center across the streets, but as it's closed nights and weekends, nobody seemed to be policing the lot, so game on.

Go buy a lovely bottle of Red wine. Then make a reservation here- you will be ridiculously, gloriously happy that you did- You MUST have the green bean, tomato and homemade Mozzarella appetizer, the minestrone soup, then the Agnioletti Rossini Pasta and finally the tiramisu.
The service has always been superb, the servers are knoweldgeable and will reccommend what is freshest, most flavorfull and new for the season.
I think the surly reviewer below must've got lost on the way to the Olive Garden. If you are looking for true authentic Italian- this is where you go. The servers always remember what I've ordered before I open my mouth, and have been fantastic, asmart, kind and unobtrusive. I can't say enough good things- just go!

Why don't restaurants ever check the olive oil they put on the table for dipping your bread? This is something I've expereinced at many other restaurants as well. But what distinguished Caro Mio was the fact that this was the rancidest "olive oil" I've ever tasted. - not that it matterd much- the bread they brought before dinner was really unappetizing. We should have taken this as a sign to get out before things could get worse - and they did. I ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese - what an insipid mess! My friend's entrees were also disappointing as well. The risotto looked good and the rice was certainly fluffy - but we were hard put to discover what the flavor was supposed to be. This was accompanied by some of the surliest service I've ever encountered.

it seemed to be a pretty standard italian restaurant. very good food, large portions, the waitress seemed like she belonged in a diner and the music was a bit eclectic and odd- some ella fitzgerald, ani difranco, tori amos? for an italian restaurant. the food was very good, but i don't know that it inspired me to run back there in a hurry.

My husband and I went to the restaurant for our 4th anniversary in July 05. It was my first time in Chicago. Though the restaurant was full, we still felt the romance in the air. We opened the meal with the green bean salad (fantastic). For dinner, I had the chicken vesuvio and my husband had the lasagna. The portions were so large, I could have fed 3 other people with my dish alone. Because it was our anniversary, they through in a slice of the most wonderful cheesecake on the house! I can still taste it. The owner and his family were there and walked around the restaurant checking on patrons all night. Our meal with tax and tip was still less than $70. When in Chicago, I will visit again.

4th visit to CM. Server would not let me have any soup but potato even though they also had minestrone. Finally, the server acquiesced and let me have the minestrone. 4 slices of thick, tasteless, very un-Italian like bread were provided. We ate these with our salads & asked for more. 2 slices were brought & placed in front of me. I thought "how odd?" Asked for parmesan cheese for my minestrone which was parceled out as if it were beluga caviar. Cheese never offered for entrees. Bill came with "extra bread charge". WHAT? $20 for a pasta entree and they could not afford to provide a few extra pieces of bread? The idea of an Italian restaurant, any one and especially one that charges these prices, charging for extra bread is unusual to say the least. it is a terrific insult to all patrons. I will not be back.

One of my faves! Excellent food prepared from scratch, intimate & romantic ambiance, friendly & knowledgable staff, and plenty of neighborhood regulars. It all adds up to something sublime. I've been here half a dozen times and have never had anything less than a great dining experience. It's small, so reservations are mandatory for large parties. The entrees are a little on the expensive side, but you save $$ with the BYOB policy. So many great dishes: green beans and tomato salad, pasta arrabiata, risotto with porcini mushrooms. mmmmmmmmm...

A charming little storefront restaurant, very warm, inviting, nice for just a couple or for two couples, not a place for a large crowd, it would ruin the ambience. The owner was very much present and came to the table several times to make sure all was well. The salad caprese was terrific, I had a veal dish that was lovely, my friend risotto that was equally good. We were stuffed so could not have dessert! I am planning to take some friends there in two weeks I liked it so much.

My friends and I found this place on city search. It is probably the best restaurant I've been to in Chicago. I absolutely loved everything about it. We usually go to Volare, but I've had a change of heart! :) I cannot wait to bring family and friends to this fabulous hidden spot!

Forget the trendy restaurant tourist scene- Caro Mio was the best restaurant we visited! Sit outside if you aren't drinking, you are surrounded by a garden of flowers and lights. If you'd like, bring a bottle of your fav wine and dine indoors- no corkage fee and the ambience is authentic Italy. Family owned and operated, expect homemade soups, pastas and breads. Attentive service- we even had the owner stop by! Couple this dining experience with a visit to The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge just a few blocks away, it is right on the red line and worth the trip!!!!!

When I brought my picky, unplacatable mother-in-law here-- I knew she would be pleased-- what I did not expect was to her her weep over the exquisite meal! The modest surroundings and intimate atmosphere (not to mention the wait line out the door on the weekend... all loyal regulars) are among the best parts of this hidden gem. It is worth any length of wait... I promise! The service is remakable-- I have had the servers remember what I have ordered on past visits in order to reccommend delectable new menu selections. The staff's pride and enthusiasm is visible on every (generous, delicious) plate! "Grazie" & "Mangia Mangia!"

Caro Mio is a lovely little restaurant with a diverse customer base. We live in the neighborhood and bring our infant there, and we've always felt welcome. The service is warm and friendly, the food is terrific - portions are large, so we eat family-style - and I wish we could go more often! If you're looking for a hip spot, this won't do it for you. But if you want a good meal, good dinner conversation, and a laid-back atmosphere, Caro Mio is the place.

This is the perfect restaurant to take that special date. The friendly servers make one feel at home but do not intrude as diners eat authentic and delicious Italian dishes in one of the most romantic settings in town. At night the terra cotta walls bounce off candlelight from tiny wall sconces, overhead candleabra and table candles. The music even contributes to romance; soft popular music alternates with Italian arias. This is the restaurant where I would hope to get engaged!

This epitomizes a wonderful dining experience. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. His recommendations of the day's specials were invaluable and right on the mark. The food presentation was excellent. The food was incredible; from bread to salad to entree to dessert and coffee.

I recommend Caro Mio for friendly gathering with friends or for the all-important first date. I certainly will be returning.

Caro Mio bustles with a friendly neighborhood crowd, drawn to the modest one-room eatery by reasonable prices and a BYOB policy (your server can provide fixings for mixed drinks). The dining room is simply decorated…
