This is a great little place in Hyde Park. It is relatively inexpensive and the service is really quick. There is one thing that I need to say and that is the Lemon Chicken is incredible. Go if your looking for a great cheap eat.

Pros: The Lemon Chicken

Cons: none that I can see

This place has the best yellow curry dishes that I've ever tasted. It's also cheap and the servers are very friendly. If you are in (or near) Hyde Park and like thai food you must go to the Snail

Eat at this restaurant, it's excellent. They really understand Thai cooking and they make food that is overflowing with the wonderful flavors that make Thai food. This place has my favorite Tom Kha soup anywhere. The curries and salads are excellent, as are the noodle dishes. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is good. The music selection is usually classic jazz and the decorations are pleasing to the eye. The prices are reasonable and this is a good place to BYOB. This restaurant is a great place for special occasions and for no occasion at all.

This is one of the best kept secrets on the southside. The Thai cuisine is authentic. The portions are large, and suitable for sharing. The plum sauce and potstickers are to die for. There is so much food, that you can't eat everything on your plate. The prices are exceptionally reasonable and the owners are very helpful in explaining items that seem too exotic to understand. This is a great little gem in Hyde Park.

PROS: Hidden Gem

Like most places reviewed in Hyde Park, Snail holds up under scrutiny only within the confines of Hyde Park - meaning that if you're a U of C student "stuck" in Hyde Park, it might be a half-way decent place to dine w/in walking/biking distance.
Red flags: no Asian diners, complimentary bowl of homemade corn tortilla chips (?!?!)
Positives: many entrees under $10, quick food preparation, BYOB
Negatives: poor AC, sneaky "rice" charge of $1.25 (nickel & dime tactics), lots of vegetable "filler" in seafood dishes (bok choy stems & nappa), small entree portions
We ordered: Red curry Snapper (however was later told they did not have), Chao praya river shrimp (shrimp & bean thread in a pot), Chili scallops, Yum Nua
** Good place to dine w/ a large group only b/c you'll save by bringing your own alcohol **
** You're better off dining in Chinatown **

The Snail is the best thai restaurant in Hyde Park, if not the entire city. If you haven't had the Khao Soi, you must go out and try it right now. The owners are fabulous and the prices are always reasonable. To go, at the restaurant, or in a cooler at Cobb coffee shop, this is the best you'll find!

Go with a date, go with friends, go with a group--I've never had a bad thing to say about Snail Thai. The Thai fare here is very good, and by far the best of the Thai restaurants in Hyde Park. The accommodating staff (just smile when you walk in) is prompt, friendly, and always a welcoming site. It's nice to walk into the Snail, take a load off, and know you're going to enjoy a very pleasant meal. Good prices, nice portions--the Snail is one reason why I don't get away from Hyde Park enough. Fast delivery available, as well.
