Ken Kee was introduced to me by UofC undergrads during my med school years at UIC, and I still love it, like 10 years later. The food is very consistently made with fresh ingredients and tastes home-cooked, with natural flavors and no MSG that I can tell. Because it's home-cooked, you may have to do some trial-and-error to find what you like best, as the fried rice is not like Chinese take-out fried rice or Thai fried rice. Perhaps best to go with someone who has been there before. Waiters really only speak Chinese (Cantonese and some Mandarin), so asking for advice probably won't go over so well. Lots of people like it, so it can get very crowded in the evenings, with the waiting line going out the door. I always feel full and good after eating here.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago's Chinatown. They are consistent (at least, in the last two years that I've been patronizing the restaurant) and quick (if not abrupt, by Western casual dining standards). The specialty of the house is Cantonese, with some Macaese food, too. I love the cold little dishes, fried smelt with chilis, the Agedashi tofu with greens and mushrooms, steamed fish with ginger and scallions, and greens with Malay shrimp paste. My friends and I peer enviously at the tables with crabs sauteed with scallions and are plotting a crustacean party there sometime soon. I like the food so much there that even when my boyfriend picked a dish that I did not like (noodles with preserved pickles and pork), what I did not like was the sweet-and-sour-like sauce, but appreciated the noodles, which tasted hand-rolled. So I guess it sums up the way I feel about this place: even though they cook with more oil and salt than I prefer, and the flavor is heavier that I like, there is usually something I like in just about every dish. This restaurant also renewed my faith -- worn out after trying out several "well-regarded" restaurants -- that Chicago's Chinatown could offer Chinese food to my liking, and has inspired me to try out more places.

My favorites are their Japanese Tofu with King Mushroom, Fish fillet in salt and pepper and Pan fried noodle with Seafood combination. I also notice that their home made chili oil is tasty, maybe because they make it with added anchovy. This restaurant is always busy day and night, but in the weekdays the line is not as bad as the weekend or holiday time.

Ken Kee is located in Chinatown Square in Chicago's Chinatown. It is a smaller restaurant with great inexpensive food. They offer a wide variety of teas and fruit drinks as well. Good restaurant to go to with groups of 4 or less. Service is very quick. It is usually packed with more of the high school/college aged customers and smoking is allowed in the restaurant. For those of you who are sensitive to smoke, i would recommend getting a booth.

Ken Kee Restaurant is usually my back up restaurant when Joy Yee is full. Their dishes are tasty and the price is cheap. But their drinks are no where as good as joy yee and also there are quite a few smokers in the restaurant which ruins my meal.
