Terrible customer service. Not knowledgeable and often rude. I have to hunt down someone to help me, then they know nothing about the products they sell. I needed a very simple item and they kept me waiting 20 minutes while they hunted around in the back, then eventually said they didn't have it after all -- but I could use a different product. The alternative they recommended would not have met my needs, and they should have known that! Shouldn't a camping/outdoor store hire employees familiar with the products they sell?

If you do buy something, it takes forever to check out. Budget your time carefully as you'll be in this store forever, no matter how small/simple your purchase.

Their prices are very high. Always check online before purchasing here; you could save a bundle. They sell clothing at full price that has been priced for clearance by the maker (e.g., Patagonia).

This store is horrible!! Every time my husband and I enter the establishment they are rude and we are always a bother to them. Their service is terrible and if they carry the shoes you want but they are out of that size they make you pay for shippng when it comes with their normal order anyway!!

As someone who spends all of his free time camping/backpacking/canoeing, I'm often asked what I think of champaign surplus. The truth is, not much. Despite teling myself ill never go back everytime I go, I still go in there for some things from time to time. I've never met anyone on their staff that seems like they've ever been camping before. My purchases are usually under ten dollars and I am made to feel like my questions are wasting their time. I'm sure if I was there to buy some of their trendy, overpriced, "outdoor" gear I would get better service. After spending five minutes with a clerk on one occasion, she refused to answer any more of my questions with the response, "I think we're done here." She then moved on to another customer. On another occasion I was told to sit and wait while a clerk looked in the back for something. After a half hour, another clerk asked me what I was waiting for. He told me, "Oh her shift ended. On her way out, she told me to tell you she couldn't find it." The stories go on and on. As far as their selection, I find what I'm looking for about %10 of the time. If your roasting hotdogs in your backyard with your kids Cub Scout den, this is your store. If you like to camp, you're better off buying your gear online.

Last week we came in to the Champaign Surplus store in Champaign about an hour before their closing time.
The store was rather empty, and we came in and looked for apparel when we noticed some of the female workers there were following a black man around the store.

We were shocked and insulted as we witnessed a few of them pretending like they were going on with their work, or trying to be helpful, when they were clearly keeping an eye on him and giving him special treatment when he was just shopping.

We left the store and additionally found out that their products are very overpriced--for example, long underwear they sell for $45 at their store can be bought at amazon as low as $25. Forget it. don't bother driving there. They are rude and have no respect for customers. We have nothing positive to say after what we saw.

I visited this store few days ago and was so surprised about the selection they had. It is a big store for sporting goods. They have a lot of famous brand. The price is fair. But annually they will have a big sale for winter. You can get Columbus, etc brand coat for more than 50% off which is awesome. But sure you need to shop earlier in order to get most of the selections.

Champaign surplus is an army surplus store + outdoor clothing/camping goods store. In the front they have tons of warm winter apparal including hiking gear, ski gear, and camping equipment. In the back they have their army section with all kinds of camo army clothing and army medals and supplies (real army messenger bags) I tried some of the army stuff on and wasn't that impressed, it was cheap but the name brand stuff up front I thought was nicer. They also have a large selection of boots, including some huge steel toe army boots. I picked out some gloves and a hat here from a huge selection up front and I still use them years later. The store is in downtown champaign and they have a parking lot so parking is never a problem.

PROS: really impressive selection
CONS: far from UIUC campus

One of my favorite places in town for camping and outdoor supplies, though they are not cheap (but you get what you pay for). Keep an eye out for their twice or 3-times a year sales where you can find Columbia, North Face, etc. clothing for very good prices.

This a great store for any type of outdoor equipment. They have camping, skiing, hiking and so many more. To me they have a much nicer selection at better prices than some of the major chain stores.
