The worst place we've even been to. There was no selection whatsoever, and the worst service. We ended up to eat somewhere else afterward just to get rid of the bad taste. Don't go there!

Chicago, I would recommend making it a must at the Phoenix Restaurant. This was my first experience and I loved it

If you go into Phoenix with a Western attitude that you will be waited on hand and foot, your experience may suffer. We have been going to Phoenix for years with excellent results and food. Went again last Sunday and they now have a picture system to assist ordering if the carts are not out. If you see something on a cart that you want, go to the server and request it be brought. If you don't see something coming around, request your server to get it for you. If you just sit there and expect every type of dim sum to be brought to your table, you may be dissapointed. We got every thing that we wanted in an hour period. It was all excellent from 'Dragon Claws' to tripe with turnips. I just had to counter all these negative reviews.

Pros: Best dim sum in Chicago

.

"My husband and I took his family here this past weekend, and what we were met with was rude, inconsistent service, and a lack of selection, unless we wanted to eat chicken feet. That cart came around three times. The other carts were nowhere to be seen.
That being the case, we ordered our dim sum ahead of time, to ensure we received the dishes we wanted, and only received half of what we ordered. When we asked at the end of our meal about our missing dim sum, we were told very rudely that it needed time to be prepared...yet we had been there an hour. How long does a shrimp dumpling take, anyway?
The woman that appeared to be a manager was horrid. No people skills at all.
We left hungry, after paying a 60 dollar bill. We had to go get a second lunch.
We will not be going back to Phoenix. With so many choices in the area, get your dim sum elsewhere!"

Whenever we come to Chicago we have to stop at Phoenix. The dim sum is simply awesome. We were there yesterday and the food was incredible as always. We enjoyed everything we had and we tried a variety of dishes. The shrimp dumplings are the best! The service can be spotty but we were seated near the door to one of the samller rooms and were able flag down any cart that appealed to us and usually they stopped every pass.

Great food. Bad customer service. It seems like they serve their own langauge spoken first and bring the food to them often. i hardly had anyone came to my table show me the Dim Sum items. i was waiting to get in for 30 mins.i only have 4 dim sum items.Lucky i ordered some dish on the sides. Ohh well i am happy with the food, it taste good but not the service.

Shark fin is tasteless. The soup is flavored with chicken or beef broth to get flavor. Chinese view sharks as having medicinal qualities, but sharks get tumors, cancer and other diseases as well and no scientific evidence has shown shark fin soup to have ever provided health benefits. Shark Fin Soup has led to the decline of the world's shark populations by up to 90%. Annually millions upon millions of sharks are slaughtered exclusively for their fins. The sharks entire body is then dumped back into the ocean, therefore wasting the entire shark. DON'T EAT HERE!!!

This is another place that I do not understand the hype about. It's fine but come on, you're in Chinatown and there are lots of other options. My meal was not particularly good and I feel that it was a little more pricey than others in the area.

Used to go for the past 10 years, and I will no longer after my last visit. I was seated in the middle of 15 other tables, so as you can imagine in a DIM SUM place WITH CARTS, you are not going to get any attention. We waited 10 minutes while watching everyone around us getting serviced by the cart servers. Either they are blind or really dumb in not asking the people at the inner tables what they want. It took one of their managers to eventually come and take our order...whats the point of carts and DIM SUM then?!? Even after taking our order, it came out incomplete and when we asked where the rest of our order was, they said its coming. 10 minutes later, and no food, we paid the bill and walked out.

take a pass on their fried calamari, too greasy and they do not give you a dipping sauce. i had to ask for lemons. kung pao chicken is good. shrimp fried rice not too greasy, we also had their shrimp it was good. huge portions we had to take some home. overall food is allright. no harm in trying this place out. the food arrived fast even on a saturday night. fast service.

I had to write after the terrible and somewhat misinformed review before this one.
My point: If you go during peak hours for dim sum don't complain when you have to wait 'heaven forbid' 30 minutes for a seat.
Bad points: lines and waits can be long (go on off hours), the staff though friendly don't seem to know much english, slightly over-priced.
Good points: AWESOME dim sum with an incredible variety. Great location right off the red line.
To me the food mades up for any bad points. If you want a waiter filling your glass every minute, english, no waits, plain food go somewhere else. If you want something authentic and good your at the right place.

Want a clean, nice-looking place to sit? This is the place. Want food? DON'T GO HERE!!!! Terrible service, LONG lines, mediocre food, overpriced for dim sum. I went here twice and left both times after waiting patiently for about 30 min (on top of the 30 min spent on waiting to get seated) without any decent food. The only food that came around was the same 2 or 3 carts that we had already sent off because we didn't want any of it. Yet the same carts come around asking you the same questions over and over, and when you ask for some other food, they'll just send back the same carts and look at you like they don't understand what you want. When I complained as i was leaving to the manager up front (or the owner?) about a server who was particularly disgruntled and ruined our dining experience, he told us "Don't worry. She's a cart-pusher. No education. They're st---d. Next time come up here and tell me what you want" Aside from the fact that it's completely not-PC, who said I was worried? I was just angry I couldn't pay to eat there. He's the one who should be worrying about the way they run business. I also didn't realize I have to get up and go up to the front desk every time I wanted some food at a dim sum. I'm convince the owner to this place doesn't care much for your business, which is understandable when you see the size of their lines. My advice, do what I did and go to any of the several other dim sum places nearby. You'll probably see better service, cheaper prices, and same food if not better.

Pros: Relatively clean and appealing atmosphere for the area

Cons: Terrible Service, Takes too long

Clean restaurant, consistent and attentive service even at peak hours. But the food: It's all about the food. Top notch.

Coming from a very traditional Chinese family, Phoenix is where I always take my visiting relatives since it is one of the best spots for an authentic Cantonese Dim Sum or Dinner. Food is great, service is quick, there is a great 2nd floor view of downtown and the price is very reasonable.

Pros: Authentic Chinese, Huge Dinner Menu, Good Prices

The restaurant is very clean unlike many other restaurants in Chinatown. The service was quick -- just make it clear you are there for dim sum. Their dim sum menu includes an 8x10 card with photos of all of the items. The waiters and hosts were attentive. For two people eating dim sum, it cost $25 w/out tip. Keep in mind most of the items on their dim sum menu contain shrimp. We went after lunch, around 2 p.m., and it wasn't crowded.

Phoenix is the best dim sum restaurant in Chicago. They serve the dim sum on little push carts. Just select the one you want off the cart. The wait is quite long on weekends around noon so make a reservation early. Price is not too expensive if you go with a large group.

Dont bother with Dim Sum if youre going to show up late or just order fried rice; youll be better off getting take out and pretending that you know Chinese food. Ive had Dim Sum all over this country, from San Francisco to NYC and the biggest commonality is usually the poor service and cramped dining area of which the Phoenix possesses none. The whole point to Dim Sum is to experiment. Your experience would be incomplete without half of your dishes being something youve never had. The jellyfish is excellent, by the way as well as the squid. This is definitely the stall-style seafood Ive been looking for in a city thats notorious for peanut butter in their egg rolls.

First of all, if you want dim sum go down-stairs, if you want a meal go up-stairs! If don't come early the wait will be long, especially for dim sum. I don't know how the dim sum can be cold and greasy when its steamed and brought right to you...although the dim sum is a bit cooler when served off the carts - I'm not sure if they are still using the carts because they didn't use them the last couple times I went. I've only been upstairs, once, but the service was great and has a better atmosphere. I go weekly for dim sum and have never had a bad experience. The food is pretty authentic - so if your looking for watered-down Americanized "Chinese" food, go somewhere else!

After a 20 minute wait, for 4, we were sat at a round 10 person table in the corner. Tables covered with parchment paper. Next if your not there for Dim Sum ask for the Menu, it will not be offered on seating. Food was Cold & Greasy at 1:00pm. No Lunch Menu Pricing. Menu has no descriptions of the offerings. No meal packages, everything ala carte, cup of soup $3, Fried Rice $10, Entrees $10+, must be the pricing of the Dim Sum that allows the Phoenix to call it affordable, but take a Gold Card...

If your hungry, find a buffet, the food will be hotter, more variety and affordable...

After reading all the rave reveiws, the Phoenix is a major disappointment not just for me as the recommender from the reveiws, but not one member of our party found this establishment worth recommendation. Definitely over rated...

This is one of the better Cantonese restaurants in Chicago, but that's not saying much. The food is nothing like the Cantonese food in Hong Kong, of course. What makes this place better than the others in Chicago is the fresh seafood selection, which are well prepared. Although the flavor is authentic Cantonese, the price is a bit high, considering that the food is somewhat rustic. The decor is generic with minimal investment on silverware and plates with the typical stainless steel teapot and some chipped plates. I would overlook all of these things if the prices were lower. But for place that charges $15 for a small plate of Heart of Shanghai Bok Choy and $26 for steamed sea bass, I guess expected more. But I guess it's as good as it's going to get without flying to Hong Kong. Expect the usual Chinatown service.

The Phoenix Restaurant is the best in Chicago. The Dim Sum is authentic, and dilicious. Although the wait is long, but it's worth it. Or you can choose to go early, or early afternoon, the wait won't be that bad. I found the Dim Sum price is affordable, while the other dishes might be a little bit too high. But I'm more than satisfied with everything.

This restaurant has a dim sum house on the first floor and the second is a more family style setting. The Dim Sum here is delicious. Unfortunately hygene is not at the top of their list in the kitchen. The waiters do not speak english!! I have a difficult time when i go here, and often get the wrong orders!

Absolutely drop-dead scrumptious dim sum. Entrees are superb, too. And prices are surprisingly low. My two brothers and I eat way beyond satiety to gluttony for about $80 total.

I have been at your restaurant at least 12 times in the last 4 months. The last three times I was there I was treated as a very special customer. There was a manager by the name of Jimmy Tse that visited our table several times during our stay. In the past no one ever asked us if everything was OK or not. Since Jimmy Tse has been on board he always makes sure we know what is available and even gets it for us or sends a waitress over with it. We usually spend $60.00 for four people. We are usually there on Saturdays around 10:00am. It's nice to see Jimmy. He's very professional. Keep up the good work.

Our family (with 3 small kids) had a great experience. Language barrier was a little tough, but our two waitresses were very friendly and attentive, especially to the kids. Food was fantastic--something for everyone. It was a weekday morning-the place was almost empty. No dimsum carts were circulating, but we ordered from the dimsum menu, which was fine, but we ended up with way too much food because when the carts did start coming by, we thought they were bringing what we ordered, so we just kept taking things! Comminucation was the only down side.

The setting is better than most and cleaner (the bathroom perhaps the cleanest), but the food wasn't better and the service sucks. It was impossible to get any of the waiters' attention, many don't even speak English. The dim sum was also in short supply and variety. You couldn't even take orders for items on their dim sum menu (I couldn't get my all-time fave barbeque pork buns). A meal that should have taken an hour, took 2 waiting for inadaquete more expensive food . I've never gone back since... except when my parents take out the entire family. Apparently unless your chummy with the manager and can speak fluent cantonese, I would avoid going to this place for dim sum at all costs. For dinner though, its decent and a nicer atmosphere.

Mediocre is the word for this wildly over-touted place. There are plenty of restaurants with better food, lower prices and more efficient serving staff. Alltogether not a place I care to return to.

P.S.: It's also VERY noisy!

It's true, if you don't arrive early for dim sum on the weekends, you'll grow old waiting for a table. But once you are seated you won't be disappointed. Carts come around often, and there's a pleasing variety of dishes - something for everyone. We especially love the dumplings, pork buns and shrimp wraps. And the price is quite reasonable. On my last visit, five of us stuffed ourselves to overflowing on dim sum for about $12 a piece, all said.

Pros: variety, delicious dim sum

Cons: long wait, crowded, indifferent service

.

Most Chinese restaurants I've been to have friendly, efficient service. At the Phoenix, they're grumpy, slow and act as if they were doing you a great big favor to even let you eat there! The food is adequate, but not special - and it is expensive. While the decor is nice, it is very disturbing, that there are so many loud people and screaming children. I am in no hurry to go back there.

Don't bother to go there! There are MANY much better places in town, with better food, friendlier and better service and more reasonable prices! The owners of the Phoenix seem to think they are so unique they can overcharge for their mediocre food and poor service!

I've been a loyal customer of Phoenix for one reason: the food is terriffic. Even the bubble tea house downstairs is great for late night study breaks and game playing. Very crowded for dim sum, it is best to make reservations. The owners are great people, and they care about the food.

This place has the most authentic chinese food among the group, even though it is a bit expensive comparing to the other chinese restuarant in china town, it is worth a visit.

The dining room is upstairs---accessed by elevator or the stairs---and it's busy no matter what time of day. The dim sum is first-rate and, accordingly, the selection is vast. When a cart filled with flaky barbecue pork buns rolls by,…
