First Class Museum

by P. L. G. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,324

In the genre of the Gene Autry Western Museum and the Southwest Museum, both in Los Angeles County, the Eiteljorg is a museum of Western and Native American culture. The building itself is a wonderment. It is a modern design that incorporates native Indiana sandstone combined with stucco and wood. The amazing thing is these native Indiana materials have been worked into galleries on the front that resemble a western-style home and in the front corner, a Native American kiva. The artifacts are some of the best in the nation and you will see things in the Eiteljorg Museum that cannot be seen anywhere else. The museum also has Western-themed art that includes painting and statuary. The museum shop has an excellent selection of books on both Native American culture and general art. Parking is located in a basement lot. A fee is required to park.

Indiana, A city of different cultures

by Eli D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,054

The Eiteljorg Museum is the only museum in the Midwest to combine both Native American art and artifacts, and Western Art. It was founded by Mr. Eiteljorg himself, as a way to display his personal collection. Other collections and museums have joined with this Museum. They also have support from the city of Indianapolis and Lilly.

They have permanent exhibits as well as permanent exhibits. It's always changing and growing. It also serves as a resource to the general community and schools.

There is SO MUCH MORE to know about the American Indian, than we read about in books, or in school. Here they SHOW you the American Indian.

Nice museum

by Dana H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,251

I was impressed by the museum tour that our scout troop participated in recently.

We were lead by a tour guide who told us extra things about the exhibits & the life of the American Indians.

There is a scout patch that is available with rockers to go around it. So expect multiple trips to get all the "rockers".

They do have special exhibits & they just opened a new wing of the museum.

They also have a gift shop.

Security is high in this museum.
Parking is garage; extra fee.
