Great chest wax. Great service and experience! I would have to say as always my hair looked great. I am sad that Jennifer Murphy has graduated. And, Angel at the front desk is awesome. I will go back.

I had a great time. My stylist was super friendly and made some great suggestions. I felt fabulous. While shampooing my hair, she really took the time to scrub and it felt amazing, and also the shampoo that was used smelled fabulous and made my scalp tingle. I was totally satisfied with the cut I walked out with. It was exactly what I wanted.

Parents, teens, adults, whomever...DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL!!
I signed up to attend this school as something fun to do. I am well established in a career but wanted to learn a fun skill. When I enrolled, the school was known as A Cut Above and had a good reputation in the beauty industry. However, within a month of classes starting, the school changed over to Empire and everything went down hill. Going to this school was the biggest mistake I ever made. The instructor turnover is absurdly high and the overall maturity level of the rest is substandard at best. This school once hired an instructor who spent more time talking about his anal warts and his theory on AIDS than he ever did actually instructing. He also burned a student very badly when demonstrating how to wax eyebrows. There were no apologies ever given. There are also no standard set of rules given or enforced. The handbook that is given out is outdated and is only enforced when someone feels like it. The school says that it has a 0 tolerance policy for drugs yet every day there were drug deals going on in the parking lot, in the classrooms, out back, etc. It was not common to see a student that was "high" out on the floor doing hair. Yes, the instructors knew it...but didn't do anything about it. Fights were also a daily to weekly occurrance....but nothing was ever done. In the end I did finally "graduate" but that was only after I had to hire an attorney and threaten a lawsuit over illegal business practices and hidden tuition charges. If you are looking into a career in the cosmetology industry, please look elsewhere. There are much better and more professional schools available.

From the hour and half wait to the worst excuse of a pedicure ever, to a dysfunctionable haircut this place is pathetic. Do not waste your time or money to go here you would be better of doing your own haircut and pedicure thats how bad this place is. It took a total of 4 hours to complete those two simple things I wanted done. The instructor was a joke everyone was exceptionally rude, there was total maham in the entire place as she walked around never speaking to the customers only the students. The instructor could care less if your satisfied but she will take your money!! It was increditable how unprofessional everyone is and whats scary is these senior students will graduate soon and be out there still practicing because they are not employable for an actual salon, they have no skills and definately no sense of how a business is ran. The lack of instruction has to be the blame, because a student will only be as good as their instructor, learning their habits and skills. I basicly got my toes painted (8 of them) and my hair chopped. I just wanted to get this experience over with and out the door never to return. The girl I had, made it known to everyone in the room she hated feet and did not know or care about giving pedicures. (Those were her words) And then had the nerve to ask me why I was afraid to let her cut my hair. I felt trapped and I was there with two other people that I came with all of which had the same experience. I can not warn you enough not to go here. If you want a cheep haircut save your money and get a $14 haircut from Haircutters atleast there you will get a stylist and have some hair left!! And ask before you sit down where they had their training, if it is from here.....RUN!!!!!!

I have been to Empire/A Cut Above 4 times total. Amazingly, they have messed up my hair 3 out of 4 times. They were extremely rude & didn't offer to fix it for me. I went in there last Thurs. & I asked for a stylist that is close to graduating, & they very rudely denied my request (you wouldn't believe how rudely). I even called first to make sure I would be able to get a soon-to-be-graduate, & they told me to "come right in"(for me it's a 30 minute drive to "come right in"). The time before that, I spent at least 4 hours in the the chair for a root touch-up & a haircut. I was there for almost an hour after they closed. They didn't use a strong enough bleach for my highlights & they tried to tone out the gold 4 or 5 times. Needless to say, it didn't work and I left w/orange-tinted highlights-they charged me full price for everything & they even had the nerve to charge me for the toner. Also, I asked the girl to start by cutting off only 2 inches of my hair(I know that they can always cut off more, but they cannot put it back)she hacked off 4 inches before I could stop her. The worst part of all of this is that the professor stood by & helped the student mess up my hair. She told her vwhich bleach strength to use, to tone, tone, tone, ect. It seemed like the professor was more interested in being friends w/the students rather than teaching them. She was a shorter, heavier, white woman, she had dirty blond hair with bangs & it was up in a clip, she was probably in her mid to late 30's. I actually thought the teacher WAS a student until the student asked her to check her work the 1st time. The teacher was extremely unprofessional, it was the way she talked with the girls, she participated in their gossip and jokes, ect(almost like a teenager). I honestly think the last time my hair was messed up, it was more the teacher's fault than the student's. She instructed the student about what to do every step of the way & even told the STUDENT that she was sorry when things didn't go right. The student followed her directions to the "T." Except for cutting off all of my hair, which I think she did to cover up the fact that the root touch-up she gave me did not match the highlights that they were supposed to touch up(which is why she tried to cut off as much as she could get away with, I guess). Also, I really don't mind giving nice tips when someone does a good job, but the students here EXPECT you to tip them, good job or not(the last time I went to Kaye's the students weren't supposed to take tips, I had to sneak my tip to the girl). Also, the students at this school don't always make notes in the computer like they're supposed to(the last color used on your hair, ect.). I specifically asked the last girl to make notes & she refused & told me to just make sure I come to her next time (she'll remember what she SHOULD have used on my hair). These are STUDENTS, there's a very good chance that she will be graduated by the next time I come in (duh!) Not to mention the fact that I really wouldn't want to go back to someone who screwed up my hair so badly the first time. I used to go to Kaye's Beauty College on the north side & they never once messed up my hair. Kaye's is VERY professional (and very busy). Believe me, it's worth the drive.
An Empire/ A Cut Above student even messed up a simple fade on my boyfriend's hair, she gave him a "bowl haircut" instead, if you can believe that.
Some of the times that I have gone in there & they have been out of things like bleach, towels, shampoo, & conditioner. Another time, when another student did my hair, she took at least 8 cigarette breaks during the time it took to do my lowlights and I was there forever(I swear-I am NOT exagerating!) Needless to say, she did a terrible job too! She is the same girl who told me that she would "be back" because she had to do someone else's hair(2 other people actually)because they were "good tipper's"(I think she said it was a mother and her little daughter that come in every week and they tip $7 each). I was there way past closing time that Saturday, watching my stylist do lots of other people's hair(and I came in when they opened).
The girls are loud, gossipy, and unprofessional.
My only good experience was around Christmas. A girl named Eve did lowlights for me. The other students were rolling there eyes and gossiping that I would be there for a while because Eve was VERY slow. They really had me worried that she would mess up very badly. However, Eve did an AMAZING job! I would rather have my hair done slow & right than fast & wrong(or slow and wrong, like my other three experiences have been). Unfortunately for me (GREAT for her though)Eve was graduated by the next time that I came in.
Don't go to Empire/A Cut Above on Southport- you will be SORRY!!! At least I have been! I NEVER expected total perfection, I am aware of the fact that they are students!

I've never been there and i was wondering how cheap they do manicures and if they do a good job. I am a high school student with no job so im trying to find the cheapest place i can go.

Even though it is just students starting out, everything gets checked by an instructor before it is completed making sure there are no errors and that you are happy with everything. This is a full service salon. You can get anything from nails, pedicure, wash & trim, color, perm, and even eye brows. Very easy on the wallet.

My mother used to have her hair highlighted every 8 weeks at a rather pricey salon. Living so close to A Cut Above Beauty College she decided to give them a try. She has not had one problem and has gone back several times. I went with her one time and got a manicure and pedicure and was impressed with both the prices and the products used but also with the professionalism from the students. The instructors are a yell away so if a student has any problems they can get assistance quickly. That is a nice feeling, you don't have to worry about having something messed up. A lot of the students there are very talented already and will do very well once they get out of school.

A real nice Barbershop and great haircuts too. I found this barbershop on my own just driving to work. The owner and her daughter work together. The owner cut my hair and it was, the best haircut I received in a long time. I recommend this shop to men, haircuts are cheap I now am a faithful every Friday customer.

This is a great place to get a deal on salon services ranging from manicures and pedicures to all kinds of hair treatments. Flexible scheduling and very personable staff. The students are very friendly and their instructors are always available. Recommend this place to treat yourself to some very nice services at a reasonable price. They offer some nice monthly specials too.

I have been going here for over 20 years. My teenaged daughters both use it too. I can get my color retouched for $25, and it is a better job than I can get out in an expensive salon. They use Redken products and my hair always looks great. They have monthly specials that are a lot of fun to try (scalp treatments, styles, etc.). They also offer more extensive facials and back facials by the esthetics students, that are outstanding. I have also had manicures and pedicures there. The nice thing is that although it is done by students, if they are unsure of something, they immediately get an instructor, and you know that they are doing it right. It has a nice atmosphere and is a good place to unwind and get some great services.

PROS: Inexpensive, excellent services, convenient, good hours

A group of us went - without asking they turned the young man's chair away from the mirror and cut his hair and he now looks like a thug. They took a shaver to his hairline around his face and did some square thing on each side above his ears. One female in our group had 5 stylist around her trying to cut her hair straight just for a trim- really? Plus it took the 2 females in our group 90 minutes to get a trim and they both need to get their hair cut again. It was a complete train wreck. We will never visit a beauty college again. Save your time and money and get a better hair cut at home by a friend. I wish I would have read the other review because that person was honest. Stay away from this place.
