Been there for the first time today.absolutely amazing selection of stuff.literally equipment up to the ceiling, it has to be the largest selection of just mandolins I have ever seen. plenty of small stuff like strings, tubes, and picks. The staff was more tolerant than friendly, they had a very 'we are not worthy to be in there' kind of tone.I realize this isnt guitar center where anything goes but they could have been a little more accommodating.

I got on here just surfing on the internet and double checking on the Music Shoppe hours. Then read a few horrible reviews and decided to leave my own. First off let me tell you that John, the owner, is a nice guy and very knowledgeable of the music industry, instruments, bands, etc. locally and beyond. His staff are also musicians. Troy the tech is also a luthier... for those of you leaving negative responses... that is a person who works on, repairs and even builds stringed instruments. Ben is the salesman and is also an accomplished bassist. Like any store, it all depends on what you are looking for and how much the market price of the item is. You don't get something for nothing in this world anywhere... however, you won't find a better place for guitars, or a more knowledgeable group of guys. Sad thing is about being a privately owned small business, you aren't some corporate Wal-mart of music stores, so others may have a better price, but won't have the same rare guitars, used selection and yes, the money you spend at the guitar shoppe is given to a local American citizen, not some corporate big wigs. You choose where you want to go, but I will always check there first before submitting myself to the torture of going to some musicians Wal-mart store, just to save a couple bucks.

Scam. Do not purchase anything from this business. I purchased a new pickup for my telecaster online and took the pickup and my guitar to have the Music Shoppe to switch out the pickups. It was a standard size for the guitar and didn't require any special effort. For whatever reason, I didn't ask how much they would charge before dropping off my guitar (I was young and naive). When I returned to pickup my guitar, I was charged about $120. I was shocked but paid since I didn't know any better. I inspected my telecaster and discovered that the shiny silver screws that were in the pick guard when I brought it in had been replaced my rusted out screws. I kept my cool. I then asked the clerk"where are the original pickups?" The clerk responded, "He usually keeps those." At that point, I was so upset that I responded "Well he's not keeping mine because they're mine." I subsequently learned that a typical store will charge you around $30 to put a new pickup in. I was taken advantage of by the Music Shoppe. They have a lot of nice things in the store, but they'll rip you off. I left angry and insulted.

I purchased an Epiphone Firebird from that store a while back... the guitar was cool, I was young, and they had a decent price-- shady though. I found out later that someone had stamped "Used" on the back of the neck, and the people at the store had failed to tell me about it.

Overall, I'm nervous about that store. Too many friends have had bad experiences (crooked transactions, unreliable workmanship...). I'm sure they can be great guys, but when it's a sub-30 year-old that walks in, I think they tend to be less than interested in their customers...

All of that said, they have tons of cool stuff in there-- pedals, amps, TONS of guitars... the deals aren't too bad, but I think they're a little high (although, they aren't a chain like Guitar Center- so they can't compete. Altogether, I'll go check out stuff in there and if there's a good deal, I'll take them up on it, but only if there are no better deals to be had online or at the two or three other stores in town. They're probably my last choice for stuff, but that's also due to them being so far off the beaten path (25th St. is quite a ways off of US41/3rd St.)...

I bought a used guitar there only to get home a find that the neck was cracked. Oh well, no big deal, I'll just take it back for a refund right? WRONG. After returning to the store 30 min later I was told there are NO RETURNS & NO EXCHANGES and that I'd have to keep the guitar. I was eventually escorted out by the city police....never got my money back though. I was surprised they were willing to lose a customer over a silly 250 dollar used guitar.

If you're a musician and you've lived in Terre Haute for any significant length of time, then you probably already know about the Music Shoppe. However, if you're reading this review, then maybe you're not a musician who's looking for a place to buy something for friend or a loved one who is a musician. You can't go wrong at this place.

You can get a pretty good deal on a used instrument. We bought a used guitar as a Christmas present in 2004. The couple of guys we dealt with were very nice and helpful. I felt pretty good about the price we paid for the guitar.

You'll probably want to go back for your guitar supplies, too. And, they're pretty well stocked in that area with strings, picks, amps, straps, etc.

They've been around for something like 30 years, too. So, they must be doing something right. Check them out if you're in the market for a guitar.
