This is the 3rd family pet (dog) that we had to send to the clinic during an emergency evening/early morning call. Reading other reviews that rate the clinic poorly... I'm sure they are not considering what the alternative is if the clinic were not open. The clinic may be understaffed, which is too bad for people/pets who need their help. However, even understaffed, the clinic is open to help when your pet is left without medical care. Our schnauzer is doing well and was taken care of with kindness. Thanks to the staff who allowed me to call in every two to three hours to check on his status.

Dr. Jill Butler was great. We took Scout our 3 year old Golden in for stomach issues and she did a great job and did not push any unecessary diagnosis or treatments. Very knowledgable and helpful. They charge typical of an emergency facility, but when your pet is sick, money isnt a huge deal. Thanks again Chuck and Kris from Dyer

I have been here twice for my 12 year old cat who needed an abscess drained. The staff was very helpful both times and treated my cat very well. The fee of $80 is a little bit high, but actually prefer to go here than a vet's office. Munster Animal Hospital was going to charge me $500 for the procedure, where as they charged me $187. That included medication, the procedure, and the office visit. They are willing to help over the phone, as well. I've only met two of the vets that work there, but both were very helpful and willing to answer any questions and concerns I had. All of the techs are friendly and compassionate. I will continue to come here when I need to.

Okay, first of all my expirence was nothing like what was noted below. My cat of 16+ years was playing with my other two kitties on the hard ceramic tile floor and one cat landed on her jaw and broke it. I did not know this at the time but her jaw was really messed up. I thought she dislocated it. I called this emergency vet first to ask them if I should wait to see my vet the next day or should I come in now. They said I should not wait. So I brought her in and they were very attentive and let me know within minutes of the exam that my cat did in fact have a broken jaw and that it needed surgery so that they could wire her jaw. I was relieved that they could fix this, I thought when I brought her in she would have had to be put to sleep because of her age. Within an hour I took her home. She still has the wire in and had a check up with my regular vet and they said they (the emergency vet) did a great job and that everything looks really good in her mouth and jaw. The wire will come out in about 6wks time. The bill was around $500. I don't think that was bad for what they had to do. My vet would have charged double. I am very greatful that this place exists and the wonderful workers are very professional. I do have to say that if you take on the responsibility of owning an animal, emergencies do happen and you should be prepared to take on those costs if something should arise. I don't understand how people think a place that offers off hour emergency service should be a cut rate place, cheaper than their vet. Just try to go to your regular vet and see how much emergency service is.

I took my dog here after waking up at the crack of dawn to the sound of my dog yelping, and finding him pacing around with his abdomen the size of 2 watermelons. By the time I got to the clinic, my dog wouldn't even get out of the car. I ran inside, and the techs immediately got a stretcher and took him straight to the back. As I sat and waited for news, 5 other people came in. 5 minutes later, the Doctor came out and announced, IN FRONT OF EVERYONE IN THE RECEPTION AREA, "You're dog is already dying". I began to cry, and the doctor turned and left. The Vet Tech asked me if I wanted to be with him in his final moments. As I stood there watching my dog slip away, the vet tech asked me if wanted to put him down so he wouldn't suffer anymore. I said yes, and she went to get the doctor. Doctor came in, listened with her stethoscope, and said "his heart has stopped". Without another word, she walked out of the room and NEVER CAME BACK. It was the techs who explained to me exactly what happened to my dog, told me what to do next, and most of all, consoled me.

I understand that when you do a job for so long, sometimes you can become desensitized to things. Even death. But the fact that the doctor didn't even offer an "I'm sorry for your loss", I can't get past that. I hope that anyone who takes their pet here receives better treatment from the doctor that I did. Kudos to the Techs on their customer service. They need to teach the doctor a thing or two.

I've been here 2x with the same labrador. The first was for a broken tail and it cost $350 to tell me it would heal on it's own. No treatment, she sprained it.
The second time was my dog wouldn't stop coughing all day Saturday and ended up with pneumonia there overnight. They didn't have the right tool dto a common test. Disappointing. Then it was $1,350 for the whole thing 10 hours she spent there. Not exactly cheap. They vet that night was decent, nothing good or bad to say about them.

My comments are mostly good other than holy cow outgragous fees. $100 to walk in. They looked over my new sheltie who is 4.5 weeks old having seizures, they get 5 stars because they did keep her alive, I wouldnt have known how to do that. Get another 5 stars to the front desk clerk who saved my butt when my sugar dropped and i half passed out, (im hypogylcemic). The male tech helped my friend get me into a chair, both techs were very good to me making sure i was ok. I didnt like that the vet said basically without a bunch of tests costing several hundred dollars it would be best to put her down because it could be this kidney valve thing that didnt close, she had 3 seizures at calumet. its a congenital defect. they closed at 8am and sent me to highland animal hospital which said the same thing after she had one seiure. NOW, a thoughtful tech at highland, fed her every 30 mins, checked up on her, said that if that was her she would try this since she hadnt had a seizure. I have her now and she hasnt had a seizure since 8am. and yet the er vet said i should put her down. I do appreciate that they kept her alive. but $156 dollars later. I could have probably done the same thing here at home after i know now it defnitly was blood sugar. im just glad she is doing good..

The family chocolate lab had been choaking on something and it was blocking her airway. We took her to this vet's office and thankfully she had managed to unblock her airway. The workers there did nothing. We sat there for an hour without any help. No one even looked at her. We were so glad that he managed to get the object out of her throat by herself because I'm sure by the time someone had been able to look at her she would have probably died. We walked right out of that office and no one even said anything. There were workers sitting at the front desk who didn't even say anything they jut stared as we walked out. I would expect someone who worked at a vet's office to be concerned for the well being if animlas. If it had been a human going to the hospital they would have been checked in within the moment o walking through the front door. And who's to sat that a dog should be treated in a way any less than a human. I was so upset with the way the staff members acted. I will not take any animals there again.

Yes they are overpriced, yes I hope I never have to go there again, but if an emergency happens when my vet isn't available Calumet ER will be the first place I would go. I have had the misfortune of bring 3 different pets there & the staff was amazing each time. I knew it would cost over $70+ to walk through the door, but my pets are my babies. I will max out credit cards if I think they have a chance of getting better & I would never put them down to save money. I never felt pressured to do unnecessary test or forced to keep my pet overnight. They did perform surgery on one of my pets & it saved her life. When I brought my cat in & had to make the difficult decision to put him down, the clinic sent a sympathy card with a handwritten note from the vet that treated him. I hope I never have to go there again, but if an emergency happens after hours, Calumet ER is where you'll find me.

All of a sudden out of no where my dogs eye looked like it was going to pop out. My husband raced him to the vet, and it turned out it was an allergic reaction to something...
Anyway $329.00 dollars later and a $50 dollar charge for benadryll he was fine by morning.
What do you do if you love your pet???
Oh and my pets insurance only covered $50.00 dollars of the visit.

I was concerned for my pet. I feel some vets play on this concern and order expensive tests and almost frighten the owner to have the pet stay overnight. My bill was over $900. And found the diagnosis MIGHT HAVE BEEN INCORRECT. It was NOT certain. The pet and the owner BOTH went thru the ringer. And the owner: the CLEANERS.
I will think and think again before heading there ever again. It will take time to build trust. And that is a shame for my pet might pay for that mistrust of this facility. Now that they have run the credit card there is no recourse. I was told by a vet tech at another office, I should have told them to put the dog to sleep. They would have come down in charges considerably. For that was what she did when they wanted a huge sum to treat her cat. She had the charges reduced by $300-400. Wish I had met her before going to this place. My bad.

I found them only marginally adequate and they made me sign some quasi-legal document that waiting to take my pet to my vet the next day was against their medical advice. They stabilized the emergency, gave me some advice and I saw my vet first thing the next morning. My cat is OK now. Use them only when your vet is not available. I would not feel comfortable with them performing surgery unless it was a matter of life and death. Expensive.

Well my cat eat string on a Sunday morning, leaving me no choice but to go to Calumet. I understand that animals are animals and it is not like a human going to the hospital where they have to take you, but to me my pet IS family. I basically told them that I only have $300 in my bank account total...period....to live on and raise my three kids for the week. They DO NOT work out arrangements with you. So basically it was either call a family member to put it on their credit card or she will die. I guess part of me understands that business is business, but the other side of me wishes that the vet there was more concerned about saving an animals life rather than the receiving payment right away. Not to mention is was $87 for her to just looker at her and almost $200 for xrays, then anything else would be extra too. It just seems really high to me.PS - she made it thru the night, and today is her birthday. I am taking her to my vet (St. John Animal Clinic) in an hour. shewww! I am so happy she should be okay now.

My puppy had parvo and I took him here because it was late at night and they were the only place open. I had to leave my dog over night and when I picked her up she was all wet underneath because she had been laying in her own urine. I will never go back here.

long story: inlaws found a stray white persian in texas in the middle of the road, we drove there and back to get her on wed/thurs, she was 8-12 weeks (after vet visit), they had bathed her sun when found with seargants flea shampoo(i hadn't known), we bathed her thurs am(they sent it up with her and i just thought it was shampoo), 4-6 hours later she started to drool and pant, eyes dilate, munster vet said stress probably, by 10:30 pm she was in bad shape, lifeless almost, i saw the bottle of shampoo (i never would have bought this product and didn't even know they made something so toxic) it states contains poi son and harmful 12 weeks and under, anyway needless to say she had pyrethrin toxicity, Cal ER was great! they hooked her up on IV, incubated her and in the morning she was doing better, however we brought her home and she got worse, back to munster, there all day, by 6 pm no improvements, back to cal vet .... now this didn't end well, severe seizures...it was horrible but they did everything they could, the vets both nights were informative, caring, they even did tests "accidentally" yes my bill for both nights was 900+ (including munster) but that's what ER's are.... have you ever been to an ER for humans? my own episode cost 12K and they never found anything.... bottom line i though they provided the best service and compassion they could, to all DO NOT use ANY flea and tick shampoo!!! it caused death to our madeleine... and seargants said we used it illegally (she was 8 weeks?, although we had no idea how old she was since she had been found).... they would not reimburse us..... i looked it up and hundreds of both dogs and cats have had problems and/or death from this product! not reading the label was our mistake, but they shouldn't have it in production!! look for www.maddecat. com in the future, proceeds will help fund abused animals or fight against this kind of thing!!
