Poor service - expensive - food was messed up
by SR3429 at Citysearch
Had lunch on Dec. 22 with large group. Waiter ignored us. Food was messed up - not right. Had a ketchup bottle explode all over a couple of people in the group which was hilarious but waiter was not so sorry about. Had to ask for the waiter multiple times and bring things to his attention such as refilling drinks, food was wrong and ordered coffee and was brought cup and cream but no coffee. Perhaps he was just having a bad day but for the price, it should have been so much better. Waiter did NOT adjust the bill for the all the problems. My opinion is that I will not be back. If I were to get a gift certificate, it would get sold on Ebay. On a scale of 0 to 5, I rate this place as a zero. However the bathrooms are really nice.
Pros: Bathroom
Cons: The list goes on - stay away12/23/09!<------------I'm with this guy!?(?????)? I HATED IT! Sat me at the very first table with my back to the door. Then we realized they were using us to make the place seem hospitable and not for rednecks. I was told; "business casual" I was waaaaay overdressed, yet the meals costs $28 for improperly cooked fish? Unfortunately for us we listened to his co workers *obviously poor paletes* & we've just returned from the Caribbean! Sorry suckers this isn't good fish. Especially for 30 bucks. The wait staff was deaf or inattentive, but dressed like Dr Giggles. Flip flops everywhere. Men in shorts and sandals. We deserved a discount for following the "suggested dress code" while making reservations. Shame on you Oceanaire for pretending to be a high class establishment. 1 Star.

One of the bell persons at our hotel put us on to Oceanaire. It was so fantastic that we went back with five additional guests a second night. Those guests who love oysters raved about the selection and the quality. Their 8oz glasses of wine for a little more than the standard 4oz price was a delight. And, oh, the desserts! Over our two visits we shared the dreamsicle, the brownie, the strawberry shortcake and the stciky toffee pudding--all were delicious. Finally, the waiter, Michael of Chicago, makes the whole experience one of the most wonderful dining experiences I've ever had. Our guests the second time actually applauded him at the end of the evening.

I travel to Indy a few times a year. When I am here, I select restaurants to visit that I can't find elsewhere or are of five star ratings. The Oceanaire is my choice for seafood in Indianapolis. Service is impeccable, the seafood is always fresh. When I ask information about how a item is prepared, the waiter is well informed and provides insight into Oceanaire's success.I recommend lunch for those on a budget. The prices are right and no need for a reservation.

This restaurant is Amazing. It is the heart of downtown Indianapolis, so it provides a great, fun and central location, and the food is incredible. Their menu is so diverse and is filled with the freshest seafood you can imagine. You can have any fish prepared any way that you like, as well as select from a wide variety of their specialty meals. The meals vary widely in prices, but overall are a little on the high end. However, it is completely worth it. The staff is so friendly and accommodating that you will not soon forget your experience here! It is a little on the pricey side, but you will not regret spending an evening here!

I have just read some negative reviews about Oceanaire and wanted to write my own. I have eaten there on several occasions and NEVER had a bad experience. I typically get the mashed potatoes, asparagus and crab cakes and ALWAYS enjoy it! I have never had a bad waiter either and the ambiance is fabulous, great drinks and everyone is always nice and friendly.

If I get something I do not enjoy I just let them know and they fix it. This is my advice when spending a lot of money (or not a lot of money). TELL THEM. Don't come on here and complain b/c you didn't like it. Just simply let them know and give them the opportunity to fix your (expensive) meal.

I truly enjoy the atmosphere and Oceanaire is my very favorite restuarant in all of Indianapolis. Always great!

well this is an awesome place to dine at as far as interior values go.......but anything other than that is just average. i definatly expected more from an upscale restaurant.! my husband and i finally decided to break down and go to this damn joint! i wish i would spent my money elsewhere. wait staff was so so. they were quick to get you going, but went down hill after order was put in. definatly didnt leave a good tip that night!!! then our food was horrible, i had crab stuffed sole. which was freakin horrible. i wanted to spew, let me tell you, it literally tasted like hot cat breath!!! nasty, my stomach turns just thinking of it. :P
my husband had a better experience thankfully. he ordered filet mignon. and it was right on!! i must say who ever cooked that last saturday night, they are very impressive on their cooking capabilities!!!!!!!! they should probably take over the other section also. haha anyways...we finished up with some nasty crappy desert also known as "the apple crisp". it is mainly a runny oatmealy porrage atop bland caramel apples. literally you could find better for a buck fifty at the fair! oh well.....so that was our story...hope everyone else has a better experience. GOOD LUCK

Seriously overpriced for the level of service.

Elaborate decor, and food would be pretty good if it were served properly.

Waiting for my guest at the bar I had trouble getting a drink. Bar tender was busy chatting with the idle waiters, ignoring the customers.

Waiter was good at first but he disappeared after the appetizers. Someone else brought the entrees but not the glasses of wine we ordered to go with them. I had to leave my seat to find a manager to get the wine. Even then it seemed to take a long time. He brought my wine before my guest's, so it would have been rude for me to drink it. By the time both of our glasses of wine were served we were practically finished with the entrees. Evidently this restaurant doesn't see the value in matching wine with food.

The waiter reappeared later for desert, but too late to provide the service that would have justified the exorbitant price. Total with tip approached $300 for two people. I would pay that for excellent service but not this.

Very good seafood. You will have to pay for it though. I had a birtday and they gave us a nice private booth and even provided a free dessert. Nothing spectacular aside from the lighting of the brandy poured over the whipcream. Service was great except that our appetizer oysters came out after the entree, so we were trying to eat 18 oysters and not get our entreee cold. That was the only fault. So the place is expensive, but its nice to have this in INdy.

Every year for our anniversary, my husband and I pick a nice restaurant to visit. Last year we went to Emeril's Delmonico in Las Vegas. This year we picked the Oceanaire and we made a wonderful choice! We were a little early for our reservation and decided to have a couple drinks at the bar. I had the best apple martini!! When we were seated, we were promptly greeted by our server. He advised us of the portion sizes and that it would be a good idea to share. We ordered the shrimp cocktail which was excellent and then proceeded with the spinach salad with hot bacon dressing. They were both awesome!! I ordered the Maine stuffed lemon sole and my husband ordered the mahi mahi oscar. Not only was the food excellent but the ambiance and service were exceptional!! We absolutly had no room for dessert. It is a little pricey but well worth the cost for special occasions. I would recommend to anybody who enjoys great food, ambiance and service!!

The Oceannaire is very elegant and beautiful to look at, but the food is absolutely amazing!! One of my favorite things to get at seafood restaurants is crab cakes and theirs were out of this world. So, so delicious. It is expensive if you aren't used to spending this kind of money on a meal (I'm not), but for special occasions (we went there for Valentine's Day), this place is unbeatable!! I absolutely loved it.

Just moved from NYC and wanted to try a night out at a nice Indy restaurant. Was not dissapointed in any way. Reservations at 8pm, had wine at the bar and were seated at 8:15. Place was busy on a Saturday night; the service was prompt but relaxed and unhurried. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. Started with some raw oysters and split a crabcake for appetizer. I had halibut "oscar" and girlfriend had tuna sashimi. Finished with creme brulee. Definitely one of the finest meals I've had in years, and just as good if not better than the finest restaurants in NYC. Will definitely return.

I had an amazing time! I dine out quite a bit but not downtown and my first experience at Oceanaire has me WOW'd. Downtown seems to be moving in the right direction. The food was great, wine was great (big pours) and our server had a clue as to what was going on. Yes, it was not a cheap dinner but it was worth it. I would rather pay and have a memorable experience vs. eating for less and regreting it. My $.02.

I am single so I dine out a lot so:
Extremely poor service waiter did not know what his menu.
Quality of food average for a so called great seafood restraurant there are better choices. For 75 dollars for lunch I expected more than the cheapes frozen POPCORN SHRIMP with lettuce....price nearly 10 dollars

They must think the customer is stupid.

Ambience is good so it has potential but there are easily better choices for seafood in INDY or Chicago

What a lovely restaurant! First of all, you walk in and are greeted by the beautiful art deco-ish decor in pleasing blues and silvers. The food is incredibly fresh and flown in daily so the selections may change. The seafood tower appetizer is scrumptious, including a whole lobster, oysters, shrimp, crablegs, etc. I prefer to choose my own fish and have it made how I like it rather than their preset entrees with their various sauces, which I find less tasty. Desserts are also top notch and big enough to share. Expensive but worth it for good seafood in Indy!

Living on the west coast for most of my life I have come to love seafood. Oceanaire does it verrrry well. Fresh fish, big portions and a great wine list. The service I have received has not been matched here in Indianapolis and I can say seldom any where else I have dined. I am pleased to see that a great seafood restaurant has landed in Indy. WOW! The Oceanaire Seafood Room is a welcome addition to downtown Indy. Talk about FRESH! This is the place to come for seafood. The variety is amazing. From the swanky decor to the professional, attentive servers, The Oceanaire has it all. We were blown away. My family is already asking to go back. We were impressed when the chef stopped by our table just to see how our meal was going. I can't say enough good things about our experience.

I must admit when Oceanaire first opened I thought it would be another upscale chain rolling into town with lots of money and attitude and little else. After much cajoling from some "foodie" friends I finally deigned to give them a try, and now I'm kicking myself for not going sooner.
Everything is top-notch from the jazzy decor to the well-poured specialty cocktails.... and the food! Hands down the finest and freshest seafood Indy has ever seen. From the melt in your mouth fresh oysters to the expertly prepared soft shell crab with melon salad - this is definitely one of the best meals I have had in years.
I'd be remiss not to mention the service. Our server expertly guided us through the expansive menu and wine list and showed remarkable patience with my date and her penchant for trying to re-write restaurant menus. I can't wait to return.

If you want to make an impression, this is the place to take your boss, wife, girlfriend, etcetera. The food is OUTSTANDING, from the huge appetizer of a medly of seafoods, to the wine, the main dish (if you have never had fresh seafood, you'll learn the difference here,) and of course - the desserts - I recommend the carmel smothered brownie (for two.) THIS IS NOT RED LOBSTER!

"Our evening in Indianapolis goes down in the record books as one of the finest dinners and gatherings of my career on the road. Incredible people, incredible food, incredible wine - What a fine combination." If the other Oceanaire's are similar, they have a customer for life...

Pros: Food, Value, Service

.

What a gorgeous restaurant! From the moment my wife and I walked in the Restaurant on Sunday night we felt like royalty. The food was amazing and the service was punctual and attentive from the busser to the server. The chef came by, spoke with us about the restaurant and briefly described how he purchases fish daily and none of it is frozen! We will be back. It is nice to have a seafood restaurant downtown and it is even better to have a restaurant that takes service to another level.

Pros: Food, Service

Without question, this is a wonderful *looking* restaurant. That is where the positives end, and the negatives take over.

1. Adequate service- not outstanding
2. Food was cold. No, it wasn't supposed to be.
3. VERY VERY LOUD. Patrons next to us were yelling, and several tables complained. Manager did nothing.
4. Food value was lowest of my recent dining. Three people, three dishes, two drinks, two desserts= $198 with tip. I can get a better meal anywhere in downtown Indy.
5. Valet was terribly uneducated at the finer points of the valet service.
6. Most importantly, the taste: Bland Bland Bland. Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing was similar taste to condensed chicken soup. No bite, and no bacon. Ahi tuna steak was sinewy and stone cold. Bread pudding was dry and doughy.

Don't waste your time. Dine elsewhere.
