The pastor is very hard working himself and is faithful about administering the sacraments. He lacks the finesse in working with people and does not handle opposition. He is autocratic rather than democratic.

The financial vision of the pastor is stronger than his spiritual vision. The associate pastor gives memorable and solid homilies. The pastor is a weak preacher who would prefer to dwell on the budget and funerals than the Gospel. When possible, he skips homilies and uses the time for announcements.

That said, there is one exception. Saint Pius X (SPX) has wonderful funerals and the pastor is excellent with these. One member moved to SPX because he wanted to be buried from there.

The parishioners are warm and welcoming. Many newcomers have commented on this as a major reason for choosing Saint Pius X for their home.

SPX has a Blue Ribbon school with tuition. It has a yearly Christ Renews His Parish program - one for women in late January and one for men in late February.

SPX has two sister parishes: St. Philip Neri, downtown and one in El Salvador. However, the pastor dissolved a three year financial commitment that the parish council had committed to give St. Philip Neri before he was assigned to be pastor in the parish. His words "We can't afford to tithe and I am saying that no more money goes to help them." He dissolved the tithing committee whose job it was to evaluate the many charitable appeals and decide which to help financially.

The parish staff does not welcome Hispanics nor is it willing to bring up the subject of serving this fast growing and spiritual group within its parish boundaries.

My husband and I used the St. Pius X cafeteria for our wedding reception. The people at St. Pius were wonderful to work with and things went so smoothly. We were able to book the place on short notice (our first place fell through just a couple of weeks before our reception was to take place) and having it at St. Pius was a blessing from God! The price was fairly cheap compared to other places we had inquired. There was a kitchen adjacent to the sitting area -- duh, cafeteria! -- so everything worked out perfectly.
