Honestly, with an Indie book scene as desolate as Indy's, it would be so easy for Big Hat to get a full 5-star rating. The problem is they are thinking that what gets sold in Barnes and Noble is all there is. Broad Ripple is full of a hip, literate college crowd that knows there's far more to the literary scene than Random House and Harper Collins. This bookstore has no inventory of smaller presses, including local university presses. They have no literary journals. None. The owner seems to have no interest in small presses or local literary scene at all. After all, the budding local writers are being published in literary magazines and small presses. I really want indy bookstores to succeed. There are great places in Bloomington, Louisville, and Lafayette that have a great customer base. But here? Everything in this small bookstore can be seen within 10 feet of the front door of any Borders or Barnes and Noble. Sad, really: this could be the nexus of the literary scene in Indianapolis.

This is a small independent bookstore whose owner actually knows books, authors, and critical review. Complaints the store isn't a discount seller are simply misdirected. If you want to support a small business, shop there. If you want your selection directed by in-store advertising, by all means you should shop at a big box store like walmart.
As to the woman who complained regarding the David Sedaris reading, there was no way of knowing that the response was going to be as huge as it was. I was there, had reserved seats, and let them go to someone older than me. In fact, the event had a larger attendance than any author reading I have seen anywhere. Rating an entire business one star for a single event is frankly unfair. The rest of us didn't have any problem understanding the system. I leave this with a parital name because i would prefer no retaliation in a review of my business by the same brave anonymous poster.

In regards to their big David Sedaris book signing on June 4 2008. It was such a sham put out by Big Hat Books. I heard about it the day of the signing in calendar section of indy.com. I went down at 430, waited in line and got in to find out they were only letting in people who pre-bought the book!! The amazingly irritating store owner/manager/whatever told me I could stand and wait until all the ticketed people picked up their book and then I could buy one rather than let me buy a book right there. So I stood there until 6:45 as they OVERSOLD the ticketed books, so after 2 hours waiting with the line still out the door for people who pre-bought the book one of the other employees asked me why I was standing around. I told her the owner/manager/whatever said I could buy a book after everyone went through and she told me that wasn't going to happen. So I wasted almost 3 hours standing around WILLING to buy a book only to be turned away. This was so horribly mismanged. From whomever put the announcement in the paper not mentioning it was for people who prebought the book to the fact they only had 1 cash register and had to look up everyone's name, explain to them how the signing work in between the owner/manager/whatever having a 10 minute conversation with every customer.

I didn't notice any discount on the books I purchased at Big hat Books. It was a quick stop but I found a great many current released novels and favorites. I found several good science fiction books on a row with commercial fiction offerings. Across the aisle was science, how perfect. It's an interesting place because they stack all of their inventory sideways on the shelves, allowing you to read the titles easier. It's probably an easier way to stock the shelves, too. I was offered additional help when requesting a business card and service was quick and friendly

I like this place for various reasons. First because of their spacious aisles and counters. The next for their variety of books that they have in their aisles. I also like them for the huge parking lot that they have dedicated for their customers. They are priced at a higher level but it is all worth it. But they have a large room for improvement. They could give some discounts for their customers and have book-reading sessions during holidays.
