Sakura Mart

I went here for the first time today, and I looked at the items they sell. Many of the goods are imported and are goods sold in Japan, but over half of the items that are dry goods are expired, and many of them have been expired for at least a year or two. I bought a bag of Ka-ru corn chips (contains eggs & dairy products), and I opened the bag, realized that the color of the chips was white (original color is yellow). I looked at the expiration date, and it expired a year and a half ago.

I would have thought that the state food safety inspection would be stricter than this, but apparently not: stores can keep food on the shelves for years and years after expiration.

After wasting $1.99 + tax on an inedible food item, I am very dissatisfied with this store. It is definitely worth it to drive 3.5 hours to Mitsuwa or Tensuke in Chicago, just to get Japanese groceries that are fresh and not expired!

I have been going here for a few year now. They have the most authentic Japanese foods available. It is all the same stuff I buy when I am in Japan! The fresh vegetables and Sushi are great too. The staff is friendly and they have a good variety of beverages and rice. Highly recommended!!!
