We recently moved to Bloomington & have an unneutered dog, so our choices are limited in where we can board him. Canine Companions has a nice staff, but each of the 3 times ended negatively.
After the 1st stay, our dog had lots of wounds: a 1-inch diameter scab on his cheek, the other cheek had a 2-inch scratch/scab, many scabs all over his head/body, & another large scrape on his elbow. After reading reviews, I suspect he got into a fight with another dog, but the supervision was lacking. I think they're understaffed to supervise the number of dogs they get over long weekends. The front desk staff seemed genuinely concerned & told us to bring him in if he showed any signs of sickness or infection. He did end up with diarrhea & vomiting, so we brought him in 2 days later to the onsite vet who gave him a shot & ointment for the wounds. I decided to give them another chance since they were nice about it.
After the 2nd stay, our dog came home with kennel cough. He was stuffy, constantly coughing, couldn't whine without having a coughing fit, stopped eating, & wouldnt get up from the couch. I couldn't understand why they hadn't already had him on medication since I picked him up that way. I brought him back to see the vet & was told that treatment for kennel cough wasn't covered by the Carefree Guarantee since there were so many strains of kennel cough that the vaccine doesn't prevent. I complained, saying the guarantee was the only reason why I was going to their vet. They gave me a $20 discount after I mentioned that he should've been treated while in their care anyways. I paid for part of the vet visit, plus his antibiotic & cough suppressant. I wasn't happy after this, but figured they can't prevent every bad thing from happening, they were nice enough to give me a little discount, & I'd give them another chance.
The 3rd stay was the breaking point! 2 weeks after the kennel cough incident, I made a reservation a week ahead of time, knowing that they may not take him due to him being on cough meds. The girl I spoke with knew exactly who my dog was & asked how he was feeling. I explained that his cough was much better, but still lingering a little. I asked if I'd be able to board him for the weekend & she said it would be no problem. When it was time to bring him in, the cough was gone, but he had 2 cough suppressant pills left since I wasn't giving them to him consistently, but as needed. I signed the paperwork, arranged for his bath & nail trim, & then the girl at the desk asked if he had a pre-existing condition they should know about. I told her about how he had previously had a cough & to give him his last pills if he needed them. She said she was new there & would make sure that was ok with the manager. I didn't expect any problems, but the general manager, Eugene, came up & told me they couldn't board my dog since he was still on meds. I explained that he wasn't actually sick anymore, & that I was on my way out of town after dropping him off, so he had to stay. The manager was horrible the moment he came up front, very arrogant, smug, obviously didn't care about putting me out. He indicated I was lying about my dog even getting kennel cough there & insisted it was "a 100% guarantee" that my dog got it at another kennel, which I laughed at & said it was a "100% guarantee that he DID get it there." He was talking over me every time I spoke, obviously not listening. I told him he needed to meet with his staff so everyone was on the same page when it came to their policy, since I was told it would be "no problem" to board my dog. (Strangely enough, this just happened to be the only record taken without a name of the person who took the reservation.) He rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders, & said, "if your experience was so bad here, why did you bother coming back?" I WAS SHOCKED that a manager would say something so rude to a customer, so I explained: "We just moved here, we don't know anyone else who will take an unneutered dog, & are really needing to go out of town, but my husband hates how you've treated his dog, so I'm sure he'll have no problem not giving you any more of his money." He was totally unphased, didn't care, & never offered any apology. I asked if he could, at the very least, offer a solution for me, & he (with a great amount of attitude) gave me the number for Wayport Kennels. I expected that the manager would call the other kennel himself since he's the one cancelling my reservation with no notice, but I never should've expected any type of courtesy from Eugene. (Wayport never answered their phone the 4 times I called. No help there.) Eugene, the general manager, has absolutely no care or concern for his customers, let alone their dogs. He points the blame on everyone else, including the customer, never taking any responsibility for what may be happening in his kennel. Nice people at the front desk shouldn't be a reason to keep your dogs in that place. YOUR DOGS ARE AT RISK!

This was supposed to be a ""day care"" and yet I had an experience of complete negligence of care. I took my dog here daily for about 7 months, until one day I picked her up and she was foaming at the mouth. She could barely walk she was so sick. Apparently they are not paying attention to the dogs or the staff is that incompetent. Their website says they offer a ""carefree guarantee"" that your dog will receive free vet service if they get ill or injured at doggie daycare. When I picked her up I was so shocked no one took her to their on-site vet, let alone attempted to call me. When the vet saw her the staff had the audacity to try to charge me for the visit. I will never take my dog here again, my dog was ill for over a week. The staff took no responsibility for the care of my dog. I will never take my dog back here again, and will never recommend anyone put their dog's livelihood in the hands of their care, or lack thereof.
