This place is extremely unethical and treats customers very poorly. I not only moved more than the required distance to cancel my membership, I also, was sent to military training more than 700 miles away for over 6 months and the owner would still not cancel my membership. DO NOT GET A MEMBERSHIP HERE!!! EVER. The owner Paul is a very rude individual and it took me months the even get in contact with him to begin with.

I signed up last August for what i was told was one year. Come to find out they have me for a two year contract. I love the equipment. Although that's all that is good. My mom passed away so i took up they're free yoga class, then they stopped that. When i went to show my boyfriend the place the hot tub didn't work and none of the staff knew How to fix it. To top it all off they gave my membership card to someone else and they keep giving me a paper one saying my new one is coming.

I also wish there was an option for negative stars!! This place is a joke! The staff and managers are VERY rude. The place is filthy!! I would rather use a gas station bathroom than the one in this place! They closed the southside facility with no warning. I once found an iPod someone left on a treadmill and turned it in to the front desk like a normal human being and then overheard to of the staff members arguing about who was going to keep it. My membership expired and I told them I wanted to cancel when it was done and they still took money out of my account and refuse to refund it. I was talking to the manager about this and I told them I wanted to talk to the owner and he laughed and said "good luck with that". I will NEVER step foot in there again and any chance I get to bad mouth them and talk someone out of joining I will do so!!!

When I was renewing my membership in 2010, the staff at the club also suggested that it would be a good idea to get a membership for my spouse. I said to them that she was not going to be able to use the club for a while, and the staff said that we could just freeze it. So went ahead and froze both my account and my wife's account. However, after having made all the monthly payments, when we finally decided that we were going to start using the account beginning in December 2011, we were told that there is no record of us freezing it. Now the club is saying that they would not allow her to use the club because we did not do our job of freezing it. The manager Tina was extremely rude and she had supposedly been instructed by the owner Paul to not entertain a request for freezing. When I noted that I am going to take this to the small claims court and also to make sure to share this with others, she told me "Knowck yourself out." In addition to the corruption of the club managemet, what is even more aggravating is the incompetence, lying and misbehavior of the management. I am posting this message with the hope that more people share their experiences more widely about this club. There are no options for negative star ratings. I wonder if any of the previous members who have had negative experiences with the club taking out money illegally have sued the club in a small claims court. Perhaps time for a campaign?

Terrible service & Dirty equipment.
**Workout machines are filthy:
They are required to clean the machines every 30 minutes, I never see them clean & I??m usually there more than an hour.

**Ceilings are GROSS:
Visible dusts are accumulated on top of the ceiling vents, & they are disgusting! (We are breathing that dust).

**If you ever move out of Lafayette within your contracted period, they will NEVER cancel your membership:
I requested a membership cancellation in September due to relocation. My reason exactly followed the policy. However, the manager who is NEVER available denied my request by sending me a letter a few days ago (2 months after my request).
VERY unprofessional. If you ever want to cancel the membership, the mangers are NEVER available to talk to you. I tried numerous times to speak to them in person and over the phone but the mangers are never there according to the receptionist.

I wish I could give them -5 stars. I have been a member there for 3 years. It came time to move and I went in and filled out a cancellation request. To my surprise they were still taking out money from my bank account after 3 months. Went back in there and they said my membership was still active. So I filled out another cancellation request and after 3 months I am still getting charged. Tomorrow I am going to have to call their billing company "Affiliated Acceptance Corporation " and get them to stop charging my account. Hope that works !!!

Other complaints:
The gym constantly had broken equipment and facilities.
I had things stolen out of my locker.
People that work there are rude.

They continued to charge our account. We contacted them and they said they would take care of it but never did then I spoke with Paul and I could not believe how he talked and treated me. If I would have known what kind of people I was giving my money to then I would have never joined to begin with. I will keep that man in my prayers because I know he needs it. It's not humane to speak to people that way. He's very nasty and I will be sure to do my research next time I decide to business with other companies.

I joined over a year ago and have been very pleased. I have heard, from others, about the Clubs refusal to stop payments, however the club itself is nice. All of the employees have been friendly and helpful. I LOVE the classes they offer and they often have multiple times and days which is helpful. I've dropped my daughter off in the daycare and she has generally been very happy there. Often she doesn't want to leave! Every gym will have it's small equipment issues, but ISC has so many it's often not a problem! And the employees will help as much as they can with workouts and questions about machines.
If you're worries you'll need to cancel, get a shorter membership or go to the Y.

I've been a member of this club since 1996. I joined when the club was located next to the Cactus. It has come a long way since those days. Reading the reviews would scare me if I wasn't already a member. Here is what I see. I workout at the club on st rd 26 and yes there are many treadmills in need of repair or maybe replaced. The pool (lap pool) looks a bit uninviting but I always see people using it. But the equipment and free weights are all in good shape. So working out is not an issue. I blame the members for most of the issue's there like reracking the weights. The desk employee's are always good to me. The owner Paul might needs to restructure how his managers operate the club. When you walk in there is plentiful of employee's in my opinion why does it take so many to run a front desk those employee's should be cleaning the locker rooms or wiping down the equipment or reracking lazy members weights for them. So in closing the only real problem with this club is how it's managed. That falls back on the owners. Being there for so long I'm not in a contract it's month to month and my rate has never went up as promised when I signed up. I've toured the other clubs in Lafayette, Faith just doesn't have the equipment that I want in a club such as free weights. The club Newtone yet is nice now the Barry Newtone is gone again is just to small ( free weights area) I foresee having to wait long periods for your turn do to the amount of members that are joining. Never been a fan of the Y. Not to mention those clubs offer only one location. So untill a Gold's gym opens in town I think ISC is the best Lafayette has to offer for now.

DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS GYM. If you do out of ignorance save all copies of your contract! I unexpectedly had to move after signing a year contract. I paid my termination fee in October. I was told I would still be charged the following month and said ok. I faxed all necessary forms to the office showing proof of moving. I have no bills because I am living with my parents. I have a job but have no lease or mortgage. I was told that proof of paystub with address would be sufficient. I told them to call if they had any other questions. December came and went and low and behold I am still getting charged. I have called too many times to count. I have been hung up on and left to hold for over 30 minutes. I finally got to speak to the infamous Paul and he told me that I couldn't live with my parents and have no bills to cancel my membership even though I live an entire state away with no clubs nearby. He is the worst businessman I have ever met. I told him he would need to reimburse my money and said it politely and he proceeded to tell me he couldn't reimburse me at all and it was not sufficient means to close the account. I told him he would do it or I'd sue him and he proceeded to tell me to go ahead and try and he'd sue me in return for court fees and said the last person he did that to he got $10,000 out of. So in other words this man is MONEY HUNGRY AND WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET IT OUT OF YOU.

I repeat DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS GYM. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT WORTHLESS LIARS WHO STEAL.

This sports club from what I have seen works very hard to keep everything working smooth. When I saw these review I thought this place had to be a joke, but after 4 years I am still very happy the employees are very nice and are always willing to help! Some have said that these employees are rude or just plan bad, but I almost always see a smile on every employees face. We need to remember we all have bad days so give the employees a break! As far as the equipment goes i have seen that some things do not work at times but I do understand that happens no matter where you go and it is not the workers or owners who break them it is the members! The child care there is amazing and I would leave my children in there in a heart beat.

Every good employee they get, they lose. Craig, Aaron Stoner, Rich, Vince, Kaleb etc. I was a member for years and NOW they have the unfriendliest managers I've ever seen at a gym. A personal trainer named Charles who has never once been friendly and looks like he hates his job and never wants to be at the gym. Another front desk manager at the east club named Kasey (KC?) is there everyday and never has been friendly with anyone. Time for a change, and new Employees.

Get some skilled, qualified employees if you want to run a good gym.

Everyone is going to Faith Baptist and the New Newtone....simply because we see what goes on at the gyms and we see that the owners can't manage anything other than group exercise classes. Find some good employees, not suckers who you hire simply because they will work your slave-shifts.

I can attest these negative reviews are all TRUE!! People put a lot of time and effort into deciding to join a gym and which is best for them. It isn't easy putting your money into something like this so you want it to go well. Their facilities are mediocre atbest; equipment constantly not working and their pool is DISGUSTING!!! They require a 2-year contract that comes out of your account automatically, and when you try to cancel they "loose" the form continuing to withdraw from your account. I went to our bank to have the payment stopped and was told by the branch manager that she has worked with at least 17 other people this month with the same issue. When they put through a stop payment for the dues amount, they just change the amount to get around it, no expert but I believe that's illegal. I have had to cancel my membership twice and it still hasn't been done. Paul is as crooked as they come, refuses phone calls, won't return messages and will screw you and probably his own mother out of every dime he can get!! Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

I agree with all bad reviews of this business. I found their equipment less than adequate, many times going to workout and only one of the six treadmills worked. After my two year contract was up, I completed the paperwork to cancel my membership with Joe at the sount location. Joe is an awesome person and I have absolutely nothing but GREAT things to say about him. However, the paperwork was never entered and they have been continuing to deduct the $80 from account ever since. When I was working out at the club (west side) I found it reasonable... sometimes they would be out of towels or the sauna would not be hot, but those were my only complaints.

I moved back to Indianapolis due to the end of a relationship and getting them to agree to follow through on the cancellation terms has been a nightmare. At first they "lost" what I sent them. The because I was moving back to a house that I owned in Indy as opposed to getting a lease on an apartment, we had a difficult time agreeing to what documentation they needed. I provided them with a driver's license, property tax, homeowner's insurance, and phone bill. They claimed that was not sufficient to proof I lived here. I re-financed my mortgage (since I was no longer going to sell my home), and provided them with that paperwork. That was taken to the club with the cancellation fee. Although the were very quick to cash the check with the cancellation fee, they claim they don't have paperwork from me proving I live at my address.

Also back in May they told me they did not have an affiliate club within the specified distance. They now told the billing company that they due.

Fortunately the billing company (Affiliated Acceptance) has been quite pleasant and have agreed to suspend my automatic payments. If it reports to the credit bureau I will dispute the charges. I may follow the advice of a poster below and take them to small claims court. The BBB routes has not yielded any solutions.

After reading all of these reviews I was very VERY hesitant to join International sports club. I am an engineering grad student at Purdue and I already was fed up with the rec center and now its under construction. Newtone wasn't really what i was looking for so I stopped by International on the Westside near my apartment. The Manager there Jason gave me a tour of the place and I was very impressed how clean it was. There was even an employee cleaning the cardio equipment when I was there. The pool was very nice and clear which I did not expect based on these reviews. I was impressed that he was very laid back and not all salesy about it. Grad Students also get a discount so I was pretty happy about that. Jason was very upfront with me about how the memberships worked and even read the back page of the contract to me to answer any questions. I joined about three weeks ago and am very happy with the gym. The staff has even helped me with my workouts. I would recommend this gym to anybody looking for a nice place to get in shape.

When I went to cancel my membership I filled out the required form and provided the requested paperwork, however I was told it had to be approved by Paul Fartwendel, the owner and that it might take a week or two. I started calling to verify that the reimbursement was in process and that I did not need to do anything else ten days later. I have since called multiple times and left Paul numerous messages. He has NEVER called me back. After a month Robbie answered the phone and put me on hold until I could talk to Paul. Paul put me on hold to verify that there was no affiliate club within the 30 mile radius of where I was moving (a requirement for reimbursement). After waiting on hold for 20 minutes I hung up. I have since called several times and left Paul many messages. I still have not heard back or received my refund. I paid for a year membership and had four months left on it, plus an additional month from freezing the membership while out of town on vacation. It has now been three months and I have still not gotten a return call or a refund......AVOID THIS GYM AT ALL COSTS IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY!

What a JERK he was...if he is trying to get people to join his club he needs to work on his customer service skills TOTAL JERK I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!!!! If I could give this a negative rating, I definitely would. BEWARE.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS CLUB (EAST/WEST SIDE LAFAYETTE) IS A COMPLETE JOKE. Yes, they do have a lot to offer as far as their machines/basketball/pool etc. but DON'T let that fool you!!! The managers & employees I dealt with there are unkind and seem clueless. PAUL, the GM is a COMPLETE A** hole. I absolutely cannot believe he has a job. I had canclled my membership with them to only learn 6 months after it was up that they were trying to renew my membership and I all the sudden owed them over $100. When I went into the West Side to discuss this with a manager he was clueless. He gave me the name of Michelle to speak with on the East Side. I tried calling her 4 times and never received a call back. I then started asking for the general manager and was told 2 times he would call me back within a half hour. I never heard from him, surprise surprise. Inconsiderate coward. I FINALLY got a hold of him after my 8th call to internation only for him to insist I was lying about numerous things that were really just facts. I was told I was "irresponsible" because his employer told me to sign the wrong sheet when I had asked to not only unfreeze my membership BUT TO CANCEL IT. (of course my fault apparently I'm suppose to know how to run his store, not his employers) So I thought my membership was done, but nope 6 months later I get charged $103.50. After he belittled me for several minutes, then put my on hold, and belittled me again, he then hung up on me.
I ADVISE NO ONE TO EVEN GET STARTED WITH THIS MESS. It is a complete shame that someone could be a manager when treating customers this way.

WOW!!! Looking at these reviews are truly frightening! Looking to join a gym and so glad I came to the reviews before going to ISC. And to think I would have left my child with one of their staff in the childcare area...I think NOT!

Not only should you listen to the people on here about not joining this place, take my word for it and don't work for or do any work for them. The owner talks a good game if you go in to business with him but when it comes time to get paid he wont return your phone calls and will leave you standing there waiting for a check.
I made the mistake of splitting money that I brought in to the club with him as a basketball coach. This money mind you came from kids. The way it was set up was the kids paid as they came in the club. At the end of the night I would get a receipt. I was suppose to get paid my half every other week. This started back in March, to this day I havent seen a penny.
After reading everyone's posts on here it makes me wonder how many more there are out there and exactly what we can do.

This place has the worst managment of any facility in the world. The employees make rude comments about the obese persons comming into the store. Additionally, closing the account is a nightmare. You never really close the account. It keeps getting delayed so you will always wind up paying an extra $80 over the next few months getting it closed. Not to mention the credit jam you are given.

Stay away from this place! I would give it a negative score if i could. I never thought that I would say this about anything/anyone... but I hate International Sports Club with every fiber of my being. I will do what ever it takes to stear people away from the facilities.

I've been a member for about four months and so far enjoy it. I wish they'd give guest passes to members in good standing though. Easy way to get more business I'd think.
My only true complaint is moving the staff from club to club. I enjoy working with the guy I work with at the Southside location. However, he just informed me they are moving him to another one. I like the south one because I can just jog over, I don't want to drive. Also, it's less busy and the trainers have more time to work with you. If they move the trainer that helped me loose all my baby weight I'm going to be very upset. It is so dumb. Each locations tends to have regulars who are used to who is there. Don't change it!

I'm definitely beating a dead horse by saying that I got suckered into a 2 year contract promising me affiliated gyms everywhere if I happened to move. I moved and the closest gym is 25 miles away and over a 45 min. commute! I can't cancel because it's not within 30 miles. I have written numerous letters, made several phone calls, and even had the BBB investigate and I get NO REPLY except from the creditor who keeps telling me to pay up. The BBB has a rating of "F" as in FAIL for customer service with over 75 investigations on this business. The company has not responded to any of BBB's attempts at contact. The owner should be put in jail, and the guy who sold me my membership who blatantly lied to me and neglected to show me some very fine print on the back of the contract. All the money in the world will never buy back their souls.

When I moved to a new city, they told me I couldn't cancel the membership because they had another gym in the city I was moving to. When I got there, there WAS NO GYM, however, I was still charged for another 4 months. When I disputed it, they basically told me I was out of luck. Then, I chose to FREEZE my membership, which they told me would hold off all payments until another gym opened up in the area, then the payments would continue for the months left I had on my contract. The next month I was charged again. I called and talked to the same guy again (Terry) and he told me that, no, I would have to pay the entire rest of the contract... then, if at some point another gym opened here, I could use the months I lost. UNBELIEVABLE. It seems that everyone else has had the same problems on here too. Please take my (and everyone else's) advice, and go to a different gym. This place is shady.??

Dont give your bank info... PAY CASH, and then your membership is over when it is over and that is that. Don't give the the opportunity to rip you off and you should be ok.

All three clubs are ok for a decent workout. Most equipment works, what doesn't will not get fixed for months and months if ever...

Most staff is VERY UNFRIENDLY! Some are nice and act like they care, but they are usually gone in a few months time.

Locker rooms are typical dirty... usually out of soap... (but I have been a member at other clubs in town and they are all about the same. So bring own soap and FLIP FLOPS!

Don't expect this to be Balley's! Because it is NOT! But you can get a very good workout if you don't mind the rude management atmosphere.

I have no problem with the staff at the west side facility but when i wanted to end my membership at the end of the contract period I was told to go over to the State road 26 East location. There I filled out a cancellation request form on June 29, 2009 and paid my last month of my membership fees to finish off payments to end my membership with them. In September they charged a fee to my credit card which I immediately called and had removed. I was sent a letter from Affiliated Acceptance Corporation stating I owed them the $35 plus a $25 return charge. I have made numerous attempts to contact the manager but the staff always said he is not in and will put a note on his office door. I was told the manager was the only one who could cancel my membership. You would think he could do it in the amount of time he has had ( almost 3 months). I don't want my credit or reputation ruined by someone who is incompetent and fails to show leadership in a so called reputable business. I told them I would take legal actions in 3 business days if I did not hear from them. We will wait and see.

As far as the actual clubs went, I have to disagree with a lot of the posters here-I never went to the Lafayette locations, but I thought Westside's gym was decent-it always seemed pretty clean, not overcrowded, in a nice location, etc.

Here's my problem: when I initially hesitated about signing a 2-yr contract because I was set to graduate within the year, I was told by a sales rep that I could transfer to over 2,000 gyms across the country under the terms of the agreement. Well, I graduated, moved to NW Indiana, found a member gym, and had a BEASTLY time trying to transfer. Neither Int'l nor the gym I transferred seemed to have the slightest idea how the process worked and neither party was wiling to take initiative (they both told me to talk to the other gym). I was finally able to speak with a competent person at the gym I transferred to, after weeks of jockeying back and forth between the two gyms and officially transfer. I don't blame International entirely but for the fact that THAT'S WHY I SIGNED UP TO BEGIN WITH! And you think the story is over....

About a month ago I moved to CA for law school and guess what? No affiliate gyms in a 100-mile radius (the one in the booklet said there was one about 15 min away. Turns out they had since cancelled their affiliation). So I am stuck mailing in my $75 early termination fee for a contract that is up in February.

Thus, word to the wise: if you plan on staying in the Lafayette area for 2 or more years, I would definitely recommend Int'l-at least the West Side location. Like I said, the facility itself was great and I never had problems when I was actually there. However, if you plan to relocate I would really urge you to put some thought into alternative options. At the very least, ask for an UPDATED list of affiliate gyms, and I would also ask the sales rep to explain in detail the transfer process so you don't have to go through the pain I did.

I was very hesitant after reading all these reviews but from my experiences at the gym it has been very nice. Everything is clean. It seems like every time I am in the weight room there is one of the employees going around and cleaning. We bring our nephews in to go swimming every once awhile and they sure do enjoy it. I love the TVs in the machines so I don't miss the game when my wife drags me to the gym on Sundays. My wife loves the classes. She took the cardio striptease class, and had a few suprises for me last valentines day!Overall I love the gym and the staff is really nice and helpful whenever I have questions. Would recommend highly! ~Russ

My wife convinced me to join the International Sports Clubs (God knows I needed it!!) in 2008.
