Big Lots, at 8401 North Michigan Road since 2004, is in the former space occupied by Cub Foods. Neighbor Gold's Gym occupies the north end of the former Cub site. Many of Big Lots' neighboring tenants, such as Penn Station, have moved to better adjoining shopping centers.

Big Lots' biggest asset is selling an array of items at well-reduced prices. Some of the items I have purchased include Diet Snapple at one-fifth of the suggested retail price; 300 count fish oil for a mere seven dollars; Duane Reade flax oil for four bucks when it sold for ten dollars in New York City; two 6-ounce tubes of Arm & Hammer toothpaste for five bucks; and classic DVDs such as Moonraker; The Big Chill; For Your Eyes Only; The Blues Brothers; Transamerica; and The Graduate for five bucks or less.

Another plus is that this Big Lots is one of the least shoplifted stores in the entire chain, as our employees tally less than $300 in weekly shrink. It would help if we had surveillance cameras in the restrooms, however. We only have surveillance in the front of the store, at the register which is tracked in the store offices.

The lone weakness of this store is the cleanliness, or lack thereof. It is frequently dirty, with paper littering the floor; mud tracking several aisles; and gum and stickers literally stuck to the floor. The toilets in the restrooms are frequently clogged, with tampons, excess feces and towel paper jammed in the commode. The employees trash the breakroom as if it were a hotel room at the Holiday Inn, with Pepsi stains often having to be cleaned up near the soda machine and refrigerator.

Overall, Big Lots has been a very pleasant shopping experience for nearly the last decade in its present location. I just wish it would have more desirable neighboring tenants besides Gold's Gym, which is open 24 hours. Too bad Big Lots itself can't be open 24 hours...probably just as well, since it would open itself to a lot of crime.

This store is very clean compared to many Big Lots. I contribute it to the fact that the store is barely a year old. The selection is huge and the prices are great.
