Great for hair, nails, and makeup

by Anonymous

I was married March 13, 2004 and selected Urban Gypsy as the salon for the day. It was a wonderful experience! Everyone looks amazing and had fun. I had my nails, hair, and makeup done that day and they all did a wonderful job. I don't remember any names now, but they were all great. The only snag I had at all was that 2 weeks before the wedding the girl that was going to do my hair quit or was fired. They booked my with someone else, we did a run through and she was awesome.

Mary Ann Havens Rocks!!!!

by smogush

I've been going to Mary for awhile now and everytime I step out of the salon I'm even more thrilled than the last time!!! Sometimes I go in not knowing exactly what I want to do with my hair and tell her to try something new and it's perfection every time!!! She knows exactly what to do! When I started going to her, I had horrible, dry, course, brittle hair and now it's healthy, shiny, and looks great!!!! Mary and the staff at Urban Gpysy are great!!! I definitely recommend them to everyone!!!

Pros: Great color, great cuts, and just all-around AWESOME!!!

Exactly What I Asked For...

by Laura Danielson

I decided to get a fairly drastic haircut and went to Urban Gypsy as a new client. I gave Mary Ann a photo and she cut my hair EXACTLY like it. It was perfect! I've been getting so many compliments!

Pros: Quick, nice staff, good price

I recommend Jessica at urban bypsy. She is one person who actually listens to what you want and doesn't just cut your hair. I have been going to her for 5 years now and have always been happy.

Jessica

by tmoreau

I've been going to Jessica Hendricks for quite a few years now, and have NEVER left after cut, color, highlights or whatever I came for without being 100% satisfied. Jessica will listen to what you want done and will do just that--however in my case she is fantastic in guiding you if you are looking for suggestions.
Painless eyebrow waxing and shaping; and as close to painless as you can get for lip waxing!
Honestly, since my first cut with Jessica I've not been to anyone else-and couldn't imagine having to.
When Jessica moved to Urban Gypsy I was a bit concerned how the atmosphere would be, but no need for my worries; Urban Gypsy is a very relaxed comfortable atmosphere and I would recommend it to anyone!

Pros: comfortable setting; jessica hendricks

haircut simple and speedy

by aeismith

I had never been in the salon before, and I was able to somehow explain the type of hair cut that I did not want. Jessica did a great job interpreting the type of hair cut that i was looking for. The best thing about this cut, was that it was all very realistic. She didnt use a round brush--that i so impossible to use, or products that I dont already have. She had a realistic approach to the cut and style, and implemented it in a way, that I could copy once I got home. She used the most basic products, mousse, and hair spray. It was easy for me to come home and recreate the style. I will return, as Jessica was efficient and innovative as a stylist.

Cool Place for a Haircut!

I heard about Urban Gypsy from a friend, so I checked it out. From experience, they recommended Jess Hendricks. Jess gave me just the cut I was looking for, and I've been back several times since then. Go see for yourself.

Great cut and color from Mary Ann

by jrezek

Mary Ann is saving me from a horrible cut and color (from another salon). She took the time to find out what I disliked and helped me create a plan to fix what another stylist did to my hair - without losing all my length. I also love that she'll tell me what products she's using in my hair, but doesn't give me a hard sell. I've already recommended her to my friends!

Pros: Relaxed but hip salon

Cons: limited parking

GREAT PLACE FOR CORRECTIVE COLOR - SEE MARY ANN!!

by MagdelenaMoore

I moved to Indianapolis from Miami last year and first used the salon for bikini waxing. I was really impressed with the time they took and the fact that they DON'T recycle wax. Then, I had a HORRIBLE experience at another salon, where the owner bleached my hair and gave me a very unnatural and unattractive look. I came back to Urban Gypsy and had Mary Ann fix my hair. She took the time to discuss what was going to be done and double checked on the coloring. When she was finally finished and I saw the color, I was amazed. She had finally given me what I had initially wanted and it looked FABULOUS!!!!! She is a fantastic stylist and Cindy is a fantastic waxer! I highly recommend this salon. Coming from Miami to Indianapolis, I never thought I would find a salon that could compare to what I've known, but Urban Gypsy has proven to be somewhat even better than the salons I use to go to in Miami. I am so happy that I have found them! :)

Pros: Excellent Service and they really listen to the customers

Cons: I haven't had 1 bad experience yet - so NO cons!

Cindy did my waxing and did a fantastic job. The price was good, but the internet special made it even better. She was very skilled and used cold towels to make the process much less painful. She was very professional and I will certainly go again.

Cons: One location

My Lucky Day

by JennyT

Arriving late afternoon for a meeting the next day, I checked into a downtown hotel hoping to get waxed before my big day.
I was struck by a gorgeous hotel employee and asked her where she goes.
It was Urban Gypsy in Broad Ripple Village.
I called, they were open late and got me in.
It was a professional, relaxed, comfortably hip atmosphere without the pretentiousness.
My skin felt wonderful and looked terrific.
My confidence level rose exponentially.
I'm going back to Indianapolis in 2 weeks and look forward to getting back to Urban Gypsy.
Owner Cindy Nagle has a great spokesmodel downtown, and a new client in me.

Pros: salon is close enough to downtown Indianapolis.

Cons: I live in L.A.

Horrendous Hair Disaster

by ChrisR89

I am a college-age male with a very astute taste of what looks good, and I went to Urban Gypsy for the first time. Due to its artsy location in Broad Ripple, I went in with high hopes, and left extremely disappointed to the point of almost being angry. I had spent my entire first semester growing out my hair from a very short hair cut, and the length was finally right. I showed a picture to the stylist of how I had gotten it cut back home (in rural southern Indiana) just before Thanksgiving. I wanted to return to that length because lately it had gotten unruly. After several sizable chunks of hair fell to the floor, I knew something was wrong. By the end of my haircut, I had lost all of the length I had spent all of the semester growing, and the top remained untouched by her scissors. The damage had far surpassed what could be salvaged, so I left with bitter taste in my mouth. Being from southern Indiana, I had never spent so much on a haircut. Not only did I feel it was overpriced, I also believe it was the worst haircut I've ever received in my life. I have been cutting my own hair to fix the new surprise damages that seem to pop up daily. It is looking better, but the French poodle 'do I received at Urban Gypsy is still noticeable. Needless to say I will not be going back, and I am starting the process of growing my hair out...yet again. I warn you if you are male--stay away!!

The Salon You've Been Looking For

I have been to a different salon almost every time I have had my hair cut, looking for the perfect cut. I found it, at Urban Gypsy. The staff was friendly and helpful, I got an appointment quickly and didn't have to wait after arriving. I got the best haircut I have ever had and the stylist even explained exactly how she styled it. Also, they did not push products on me, as they have at several other salons. I look forward to returning!

NOT A GOOD PLACE FOR MEN'S CUTS

by Philiph

I would not recommend this establishment for men seeking a haircut. I think most of us are very hesitant to try new places, particularly when it comes to our hair, but I decided to give Urban Gypsy a shot since I was new to town. Many of the online reviews were positive, and for $35 a clip, I assumed this was the place to go. Unfortunately, I had a very bad experience overall. First, I made an appointment for the earliest time available and my stylist ended up arriving 10 minutes late. After finally getting started, I gave what I thought were very helpful, explicit directions as to what I was looking for in a haircut. Having slightly longer hair, I'm pretty particular with how it's trimmed. What ended up happening was the stylist cutting it WAY shorter than I was wanting it. To top it off, at the end of the appointment, she said: "You know, I actually liked your hair longer." Wow, insulting the client's terrible haircut that YOU gave him. That truly beats all.

What would have been the point of getting upset? It's not like she would've cared or been able to do anything about taking way too much hair off. The lack of professionalism (showing up late because she said she's not a morning person) and an overpriced, bad haircut left an obviously sour taste in my mouth. It may be an excellent place for women, but guys should steer clear. I'm headed back to Great Clips on Michigan Rd.

Fabulous! A Hidden Treasure!

by lil_d_loc

I visit Urban Gypsy from out of town, and my stylist is Ms. Erin. She is fabulous! I have found a new love for my hair, and my self-confidence has skyrocketed because everyone (even strangers) compliments me on the color and style. I get several different colors of highlights, and Ms. Erin is a perfectionist when it comes to color! My hair looks natural, is shiny and glossy, and the cut is very flattering.

The rest of the staff at Urban Gypsy is very friendly. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. I will definately be returning to Urban Gypsy.

Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Fantastic Cut & Color

Cons: Parking

Awful

by teg08

My experience at Urban Gypsy was terrible. I made an appointment a couple of weeks ago for a special that included a cut, full coloring, highlights/lowlights, and a brow wax. On the day of my appointment, I was on time but my stylist wasn't. I showed her a few pictures of what I wanted my hair color to be (blonder than what I was, all-over color to cover up my roots, natural-looking highlights/lowlights) and told her explicitly that I DID NOT want to take much length off my hair, that all I wanted was a trim and a few layers to make my hair look full and healthy. However, she didn't end up doing anything that I asked for. First she told me she wouldn't fully color my hair (even though I had noticeable brown roots and was aiming for bright blonde) because it would be lower maintenance to just do highlights/lowlights every so often. Although she chose nice shades, her work overall was pretty bad, not at all thorough. (From where the dye starts in some places you can see that the foil was positioned about .5-1 inch away from the scalp. I know that it is difficult to get really close to the scalp when doing high/lowlights but she REALLY missed the mark. Plus, highlights/lowlights do not mask roots as well as she had me believe) After she finished dying my hair she gave me the worst hair cut I?ve ever had. She only took about 10 minutes to do it, cut inches off (even though I specifically said I did not want to take off any length because I want to grow my hair out), and made blunt cuts. I was in a hurry so I didn?t have her dry my hair which turned out to be a HUGE mistake because when I got home and dried it I realized that it was incredibly uneven. The left side was significantly longer than the right and both sides were jagged. Chucks had been left uncut! Also, even though I only received highlights/lowlights and a cut (she denied me a full coloring and I opted out of the brow waxing) I still paid the same price as the special+tip! Ridiculous. Don't go.

Pros: Nice staff, nice atmosphere

Cons: One stylist who should not work there

A mixed bag

by Darkbloom

My experience with Urban Gypsy was a mixed bag. The staff was friendly and professional, the environment was attractive and welcoming and the price was reasonable. But I didn't get what a I really wanted: a great haircut.

I have long-ish wavy hair that hadn't been cut in some months and I needed my layers freshened up and my bangs shaped. I was assigned a stylist who has an expertise in curly hair, which I was delighted about because I've been trying to embrace the wave for the past couple of years instead of fighting it. She did a fine job of trimming my layers, but barely clipped anything from my bangs, which were on the cusp of getting quite unruly. She told me to come back if we needed to cut the bangs more aggressively. In a few days it was obvious that we did because my hair started to look pretty '80s (which is NOT a look i'm embracing right now). When I returned a week or so later for a fix she used a straight iron before working on my bangs. WHY O WHY would any stylist do this? Especially for someone with wavy or curly hair! Obviously my hair is not going to look the same when I try to do it myself at home without a straightening iron. I mentioned that I didn't have one and the response I got was: "They're not that expensive."

For my work I am out and about and I deal a lot with people so I want to look halfway decent, but I also don't care to be high maintenance or need a straightening iron in my bag if I get caught in the rain. In any case, it was no surprise that my hair started to have an even more pronounced '80s look two days after Round 2. The day before I went to Urban Gypsy I had my picture taken for a work ID and, honestly, my hair looked better before I got it cut.

Pros: Nice staff, cute salon

Cons: Disappointing cut

Erin Kruse - Naturally Talented

by JayneBenn

I moved to Indianapolis from Chicago last November and began my search for the right stylist for me at that time. After several unsuccessful visits to salons all over the city, I found Urban Gypsy. When I called for my first appointment and was asked what I was seeking, I was told that Erin would be "my girl". From the moment I sat down in her chair, I was impressed. She is very personable - you feel like you've known her forever - and she has a very clear vision of exactly what it is you are looking to do. Each and every time I've been to her, I come out happy and quite satisfied with my hair cut. The price is right as well and you know it's good when random people tell you how great your hair looks and ask who cuts it! Erin rocks ... she has a God-given gift with hair design. I will continue to go to her and recommend her to others as well. See you soon, Erin!

Pros: Its all good!

Cons: None

Erin Kruse is an awesome hair stylist!

by jmu05

I have just moved to Indy from the east coast and was a bit nervous about finding a new hair dresser I trusted. I went to Urban Gypsy this week and had a wonderful experience! Erin Kruse was my stylist and I was at ease as soon as I met her! Not only did I get the best cut I have ever had - she was really great about telling me each step of the process while cutting and styling my hair so I always knew what she was doing and why. It made me feel really comfortable. The salon is cute and has a great atmosphere and Erin is by far a rockstar hairdresser! Call and ask for her you will be glad you did!

Leave here looking and feeling like a superstar!

by lboogie30

I have been going to Urban Gypsy for about a year and 1/2 and absolutely love it! My stylist, Erin Kruse, makes me feel right and home and makes my hair look fabulous. I've done everything from hilites and lolites to all over color and have been 100% happy everytime. She is so intuitive and really picks up on what look I'm going for. She also takes the time to make sure that I'll be able to do my hair once I get home...a big plus that many salons overlook! She also will explain what products will work best on your hair, and Urban Gypsy has a great selection to choose from. The entire staff is really friendly and visiting Urban Gyspy seems like a fun afternoon with your girlfriends! I recommend Urban Gyspy to my friends and family and won't let anyone but Erin touch my hair. Another bonus is the fun eclectic decor of the salon. Check it out-you won't be disappointed!

Pros: Great staff, neat atmosphere

Hannah saved my hair and my birthday!!!

by jenharrison

Unfortunately the Aveda Fredric's Institute in the Castleton Mall ruined my hair color the day before my birthday. When I showed people what they did to my hair they couldn't help but laugh...I had zebra stripes on my head...it was absolutely horrible. The next day was my 27th birthday and I did not want to go out looking horrible...I knew someone had to fix it...and I knew this person had to be really good. Hannah got me in at 11am on the day of my birthday ...she fixed the color of my hair...which we all know is not easy to do. Not only did she fix it, but I got compliments on my hair all evening long. Hannah saved my hair and my birthday.....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I love my hair now!!!

Awesome!

by ehowell123

I took a leap of faith and randomly chose a hair salon based on the reviews that I read on this website! I had very long unstyled hair until yesterday when I spontaneously decided to get it cut. I live in AZ so I didn't know where to go. Let me tell you the people I spoke to on the phone were so friendly and asked me questions to see how I wanted to get my hair cut. They made me feel like I was in good hands. I had Erin to cut and style my hair. She was truly awesome. She cut it exactly like I described and I didn't even freak out. I would recommend this hair salon to anyone. They did an excellent job on my hair and I am a tough critic. A +++++

Love Urban Gypsy - Very satisfied every time I've been there.

by tinatom

I've been there 3 or 4 times, at least. I love their salon so much, I recommend it to people all of the time. I have only used 1 stylist. Her name is Erin Kruse. She's young, hip and quite the artist. She is awesome at what she does. Everything from updo's, color, highlights, color repair, cuts. She has done all of these processes for my daughter and/or I. My daughter has very thick curley hair. Hard to cut. And I have just the opposite, very fine , straight hair. Also very hard to do much with. And Erin cuts both our hair. I would highly recommend her for anything you need done. The best thing about her is that she really listens to what you want, instead of doing what she wants. As I have experienced with other stylists.

dissapointed :(

by emily1151

I was really excited to get to my appointment for a waxing. They were very professional on the phone, and very helpful. THe woman who helped me was VERY nice, and I feel bad for writting a bad review, but I honestly was not very happy. My "waxer" was very young, maybe she was new at it. I've heard many times you arent supposed to wax over the same spot more than once, and she tried many times. I was left with wax ALL over, and still a LOT of hair. It's basically like i wasn't waxed. I'm really dissapointed. I'm sure it's great to get hair done, and I might give it a second shot if i have someone else.

Pros: VERY nice staff, Very helpful

Cons: Not good waxing

Are the people writing the reviews for this salon employees of Urban Gypsy, or family members of somebody that works there? This salon is terrible! The inside of the salon is a cluttered mess! A couple of the stylists have outdated feathered hair! The stylist that colored my hair put one strip of color right down the middle of my head!

Props to LEAH!!!!

by sjk10

I was nervous for my first haircut at Urban Gypsy because my first haircut in Indy hadn't turned out well at all. It was awful. I decided to try Urban Gypsy after going there with a friend so I called and scheduled an appointment with Leah. Leah really took her time listening to what I wanted and how I wasn't happy with the last stylist who cut my hair because she didn't listen. Leah understood exactly what I was looking for and took time to explain how she would cut my hair and exactly how to style it so it would turn out similar to how she styled it, because you can't ever get your hair to look exactly as it does when you leave the salon:). Since my hair cut, I've been able to style in half the time than before and it's so easy to manage. I

I appreciate Leah's patience and skills. She a fantastic stylist and I would and will certainly recommend her to friends and family. She's simply the BEST!!!! Thanks Leah!!!!

My hair looks outstanding! I called that day, and Erin was able to get me in. I was nervous at first because I am new to Indy, and didn't know where to go. She made me feel so comfortable, and gave me exactly what I wanted! Plus, I told her that, I always have trouble styling my hair, and can't get it to look the way that the professionals do, she took a few extra minutes, giving me pointers and explained the style in simple steps. It's been a few weeks and every day my hair has looked great.

by southerngirl32762

Found them on naturalcurly.on the web. From the first phone call every one was so nice and friendly, something you dont always see here in Indy. Leah did a wonderful job on the color and cut. My color was a big ol' mess from going to other "Top Salons" here in the area and it's the best it has looked in awhile. She re-shaped it and took the time to give me pointers on fixing it.
Anybody not just curly heads should give Leah a try!

Great Hair from this salon !!

by sher31

I enjoyed my visit to Urban Gypsy in Broad Ripple. It was great to find out that they had their own parking. When I go to the village it can be a problem if a business is on the main drag but I parked steps away from the door. I got the best hair cut and they run specials for new clients on color if you add a cut. I had my hair high lighted for the first time and it is beautiful.I am going back in 6 weeks and I bought some great earrings too.

I had a great experience had my hair cut and colored by Andi Dickover and was very pleased. She listened to me and gave me her thoughts on the color and I went with what she thought I should do. It turned out fabulous !!!!!!!

Pros: Thumbs up!!!!!!!1

Waste of time

by mcneal40

I was told not to go Urban Gyspy last year from a friend of mine for her own reasons, but gave it a chance anyways. Like many of these reviews it started out nice of the phone and in the introductions, but my stylist had no clue what she was doing. She had to ask questions on how she was cutting my layers to the woman at the front desk and if my color was done right. I understand when your in training, but no one explained to me that I was going to be a guinea pig that day in that salon. She had me facing away from the mirror majority of the time as she styled for whatever reason and didn't turn me around til I asked 1/2 way through. I don't know if it was to save herself from me seeing the damage or if that was her technique. But in the several years I've had my hair styled I've never felt so nervous and to see the end result, it wasn't pretty. It was nothing like what I told her I wanted, not even close. I guess, I should have listened to my friend.

Nice New Place

by janejinx

I recently moved from the west coast to Indianapolis's Broad Ripple Village area.I was looking for a new salon and found Urban gypsy on Citysearch. I went for my first appointment over the holidays . They have specials on the website so it's a great way to try a new place. I got a great cut for an amazing price. I'm going back for color next time.

Pros: Easy to find

Cons: Clean
