I have been an Elder Beerman customer for several years, and have spent a great deal of money in their Howell, MI store. Last night I went in to exchange an item from the cosmetics department. This exchange had been pre-authorized, and I had the receipt for the product.

The sales person was absolutely abusive, as was the manager, Bonnie Duckett. They left me standing humiliated and sobbing in their store.

The "manager" would not identify what type of manager she was, i.e., store, cosmetics, etc. My initial attempts to speak with her were dismissed as she refused to make eye contact with me, and turned on her heel and left when I tried to talk to her.

The salesperson "Sue" continued to be abusive with me regarding the exchange (neither the "manager" or another nearby salesperson were able or willing to provide a last name for the sales clerk, who, apparently, had left the premises).

Sue's issue was that she had seen me in the store returning items in the past, sometimes without receipts. I went home, then returned to the store with a large bag full of the cosmetics and skin care items (primarily Lancome and Estee Lauder) that I had purchased and used on a regular basis. These items, of course, did not include the large number of products I had already gone through and replaced, or those that I had given to others. The bag probably held more than $600 worth of merchandise I had previously purchased and was using.

These products only represented a small portion of my expenditures in that store (including clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, fragrances, lingerie, children's clothing, home assessories, etc.).

Neither of the two women would allow me to speak.

I went home and called corporate headquarters, who took a detailed accounting of what had occurred, and told me I would be receiving a return call.

I have not received this call, but will attempt to reach the CEO of the company. I have never been treated this way by anyone in my life, and I will not rest until these two women have lost their jobs.

I will also be reporting this to the Better Business Bureau. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can share this episode with as many people as possible and insure that no one ever has to go through this again, as well as to see to it that the CEO of the company is aware of what happened to me and fires these employees, I would be extremely grateful!

PS. This website requires that I give at least one star to this company, but this was certainly NOT by choice.

I went here to the homeware department to find a set of toasting glasses for my wedding. I stood in line behind somone who was just chatting away with the lady behind the counter...I stood there for about 10 minutes, both employees behind the counter were extreamly engrossed in every word the lady in front of me was saying. Neither even glanced up at me. I let out a long sigh as I was getting tired of standing around, and both ladies looked up and rolled their eyes.

I slammed the box on the counter and said "thanks for the help" then walked out. Sure I lost my temper, but I felt that I was being ignored simply because I dress differently. I hope I cracked those glasses too.

I go into Elder Beerman as little as possible. The clothing store isn't so bad, but the Homeworks store is unbelievable.
The ladies that work in there will completely ignore you until
they absolutely have to assist you, then it is with much
disdain. I cannot believe a store can stay in business so
long with the customer service that they offer. The local store that sold housewares went out of business, so I assume that
is the only thing keeping Elder Beerman from meeting the same fate!
