I went here for a celebration dinner. Got the surf and turf (Lobster tail and Filet Mignon). Of course it wouldn't be St. Elmo's without the legendary St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail.
I never had out a compliment, especially this huge. It was the best steak I have ever had in my life! It was my first taste of lobster and it was marvelous. I cut the steak with my shrimp fork, it was that tender. The waiter was fantastic and the cocktail sauce was so good I usually buy one to two quarts from there a month since I've ate their initially. If you haven't been treat yourself to the best steak house in Indiana.

Best steak I have ever had outside of Texas!! Shrimp Cocktail is the best ever. Don't take alot of the cocktail sauce for your first bite, try it slow or you will be wiping your eyes!!!!

FANTASTIC food. Definitely a high priced restaurant, you can easily spend over $100.00 on two people, but if that's what you're out for, it was definitely worth it. I didn't know anybody served prime rib this big, and the navy bean soup was excellent too. The staff was over indulging and the atmosphere was electric. I almost felt like if it was back in the day and I was important this was a place where the waiter would have carried a table already dressed down to the front of the room for me. Excellent choice for a date, anniversary, birthday, etc. Also, everyone absolutely raves about the shrimp cocktail, I'm just not much on shrimp. I had one though and it was very sweet and tender, and they make the cocktail sauce themselves and it was sooo spicy, but sooo good.

Had dinner with a group of 10, I always heard that St.Elmo's was the place to be.
It's just not for me. The steaks are over rated, over priced, and absolutly no flavor what so ever. And who in the world told the chef that navy beans go with steak? It was a total waste of money.
I would never recommend to anyone. Ruths Chris has nothing to worry about.

My friends and I enjoyed the best steak and service ever. We still talk about the experience and are planning a return trip to Indy just to enjoy St. Elmo's. We're fairly well traveled and have enjoyed many steakhouses across the country but found that this steak deserves it's 'best of' rating. It is not intended for children. Thank goodness.

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Crowded

One of the most OVER RATED and WORST SERVICE in Indianapilis......Not tastey, bad service, too crowded, too much pusshing, too many smokers, loud talking, TO MANY DRUNKS FALLING OVER YOU AND TELLING OFF COLOR IN FRONT OF CHILDREN.......

When you reach this quality level of steak house, you can guarantee that meat will be dreamy. What this steakhouse offers over all of the others in Indy, is the most unbelievable, fabulous, shrimp cocktail. The shrimp is huge and the horseradish sauce will make you head sweat with delight!

Great Restaurant in downtown Indy. I recommend the excellent Prime Rib. You get a choice of tomato juice or bean soup with your meal (Get the bean soup--you won't be disappointed--even if you don't like bean soup). The service is top notch. It is a little pricey, but you are guaranteed not to go away hungry.

Classic steakhouse surrounded by cool old school decor. The steaks are prime, the shrimp cocktail is increadible, a truly must try. Good wine list, and great service all compliment this local

The service and waitstaff were great...the food, no. The potato was served to me cold. Not even lukewarm, cold. My wifes' strip steak was cooked to med-rare, not med-well as she had ordered. Now here's the best part, my steak, which I ordered med-well, was med, which I could live with, I mean I started eating it, and it was fine...until after about 4-5 bites or so. Which is when I noticed something a bit odd. I originally dismissed it as being fat or something, and not to go into too much detail here, it wasn't. Long story short, I was disgusted, I was offered something else, but my appetite was long gone by then, they took it off my bill, and that was that. Some $40 steak!

This is a great restraunt to get a taste of the local scene. Here's the low down:

Ambiance - Great ambiance, the bar is classic and bustling, while the dining area is perfect for a romantic dinner or group get together.

Food- The shrimp cocktail is very good, but be aware the cocktail sauce is very spicy. The steak was good, but it did come out over done, I sent it back and the next one was delicious. I'd give the steak a 9 out of 10, with Ruth's Chris getting a 10.
Service - My server, Chuck, was very attentive but not over bearing. The over cooked steak put service to the test. I mentioned that the steak was good, but overdone. He apologized, got me a new steak fast (which was cooked perfectly), and comped mea $12 glass of wine.

Ill be back!

I don't know why no one gives Indy credit for doing things right, but this is one place that deserves praise. I'm sorry to those of you that had negative experiences - especially on a visit to town - but as an Indy native whose been many times, I would highly recommend it to anyone. The shrimp cocktail alone is worth the trip - the spiciest cocktail sauce you'll ever have! - and the wedge salad (way before everyone else jumped on the trend!) and surf & turf are phenominal. Really cool "old school" experience in the heart of downtown.

.

After repeatedly telling the waiter we didn't want the cocktail the service went downhill from there. My Prime Rib was overcooked as was my wife's strip. Terrible rolls and awful sides. Navy Bean or tomato juice? Iceberg lettuce not Romaine? I really wanted to like this place. I live in Chicago but go to Colts games, and it came highly recommended. What type of steak place doesn't offer a T-Bone? Overall, overhyped and overpriced. Sorry but we won't be returning. Many more downtown Indy restaurants to choose from rather than Elmo's.

There were six of us at dinner. 3 out of 6 had problems with their steak. My steak had a vein running through it bigger than any of my own. Fat galore on a 34 dollar steak! I've honestly had a better steak for 9.99 at Logans Steakhouse! Rolls were extremely hard even for hard rolls! Entrance is smokey and over crowded you can't move. We walked down 3 flights of steps to our table in some small back room. My sister who came all the way from Cinncinnatti to eat here, complained to the management and got a $50 gift certificate for her next time. What next time? A $100 meal for two....the steak should be edible! Horrible...Horrible...Horrible! What a waste of money. I'm sure someone else will come on here and post from St. Elmos so their score stays high!

After much anticipation to dine here, I found it overpriced and disappointing. First, I could not be seated until my "date" arrived. (He was parking and was enough of a gentleman to drop me at the door...) Next, if I heard the suggestive sell of "try our shrimp cocktail" one more time, I was going to hold up a sign stating, "No, I don't want fries with that..." The food was fair. In all, it was very overpriced for the quality. I have traveled and dined extensively and would not visit here again. The only bright spot here was our waiter. He was immensely gracious, made a lovely wine recommendation and kept my husband's food warm while he had to go outside momentarily to answer a cell call.

Great place. Food was outstanding, wine selection was unbelievable. service was great, price was what you would expect. In my opinion if you are going to Indy for one night and had to choose where to eat, this should be the place as much for the history as anything else, although the "anything else" certainly stands on its own.

First time to St. Elmos. Saw a famous QB and his family, found out they (men) liked Cigars and luckily had some good ones, my nephew was floored when he got the autograph. Well on to the food and service, steak was one of the best, my personal fav. is Chop House in Chicago, but this place comes close, first class service. Highly Recommended!

Visited 2 times and ordered fillets (which had come highly recommended). Below average steaks both times. First time, it tasted of meat tenderizer, 2nd time it was tasteless. The service was fantastic, but it can't make up for the poor quality of meat. I am very disappointed in my visits and would not recommend their steaks.

I have visited St. Elmos several times over the years hoping that some day that I too could bathe in Steak bliss like so many others claimed to have done over the years. However Elmo's always leaves me feeling somewhat dissapointed.

The place has a nice ambience - kind of a "guy" type of joint.

The steaks are mediocre at best. I think they are way overated.

I will give St. Elmos one thing: The Best Shrimp Cocktail in America. Shrimp are always large (even in the Summer months) and cooked to perfection. Not to Raw and not to soggy just right and topped off with just flat out great Cocktail Sauce!

If you are looking for an OK steak with a must have, to die for, best shrimp Cocktail in America. Then St. Elmos is for you.

Don't get your hopes up to high.

St Elmos is a great throwback to the classic steakhouse. You can often find Peyton Manning or somebody similar at the bar and the shrimp cocktail has a horseradish sauce that will clear any sinus congestion. Our waiters have always been wonderful and knowledgeable, but maybe a bit gruff in the tradition of the Palm or one of the NY steakhouses. The wine cellar is wonderful -- ask for a tour after dinner. Plan to spend some time and some money, but savour the food and the atmosphere -- no place in Chicago or NY has a leg up on it for either food or mood (loud, but sociable).

After two attempts at dining here, I give it overall extremely poor performance and quality. MANDITORY 20% gratuity? Ok fine, but I want MANDITORY service, NOT cold baked potatoes (butter NEVER melted!!) after being replaced TWO TIMES! No fresh ground pepper, steaks soooo dry they NEEDED steak sauce. One trip here and possibly a bad night. Two trips here and the only change was in my fleeced pockets! Drink heavily to soften the blow!

Being a huge Colts fan, my husband and I were in town for the highly anticipated Colts-Packers game. After reading the reviews on St. Elmo, I was leary to try it at first. But I like to form my own opinion, and I figured they must be doing something right if they've been around since 1902! I am glad that I gave it a chance. It was extremely busy, yet we were seated immediately at our reservation time, and did not have to wait. The Server was very professional and knowledgeable. And my husband and I enjoyed the best steak we have ever had, and we've lived in Chicago for a number of years. I also loved the exciting atmosphere and the jazz band that was playing in the bar area. Superb, an overall 10+ experience!

St. Elmo's is a city landmark, and I very much want it to be the best steak house in my home town.

As many reviews have correctly stated, the service is sub-par (not snobby so much as indifferent to the diner's needs/wants) and the steaks are very ordinary. St. Elmo steaks are consistently dry and flavorless (I always order medium-rare or rare).

I am not a shrimp fan, but I like to sample the cocktail sauce just to experience the sinus-clearing heat.

The best steak in the city is, unfortunately for those of us who want it to be obtainable in a non-chain steakhouse, is at Morton's (sigh, ... of Chicago). And there are quite a few others in line before you get to St. Elmo's, in my opinion. Peterson's and Vizion are local and FAR better, but lack the notoriety and nearly inexplicably legendary status of St. Elmo's.

After going to the best steak houses in Chicago and Kansas City - I was not impressed by this restaurant. Initial impression upon walking in the door was bad due to the overcrowded bar and waiting area - this makes me think that they do not have good control over their reservation schedule. My rating of this establishment continued to decline after sitting in a very cramped dining area, dealing with the rude wait staff, and the poor taste of the "legendary" shrimp cocktail. They seem to have attempted to see how much horseradish they could put in the sauce without turning it white - I prefer to be able to taste the shrimp instead of only tasting horseradish.

I tried this place three years ago when I was in Indy. The steak was ok but the service was awful. Maybe because I was young and dining by myself. My co-worker and I went there this week and the service was just as bad. The food was ok. There won't be a next time.

St. Elmo used to be our favorite restaurant, but the prices have went up and the quality has gone down. I do not agree with those who say the steaks are juicy. I can comment on 3 visits, which are our last...where the buns and rolls were rock hard, the steaks were tough, and the tables were extremely crowded. I do not recommend this restaurant. Sorry.

The restaurant's decor looks like it would stand out whether it is the 1950's, 2000's, or 2050's. Its timeless.

The food is not worth the price of admission(excepting the Shrimp Coctail). Don't get me wrong- its very good food- just not worth $40.00 per plate. The service is very efficient- at the price of human.

As a person who has eaten here 6-8 times over the past 5 or so years I feel I have a valid background on which to base my rating.
I have always felt the service was very weak and the personel snobish and rude. A classic example was when I was at the bar waiting on a table (you alwasy have to wait, even with a reservation) when I casually asked the bartender if he had a martini menu, his response was "this is not Applebee's" and walked away.
The steaks are only decent and the shrimp cocktail used to be good before they made the sauce "three-mile island" hot.
My picks for downtown are Ruth Chris or Morton's, or Shula's, go to St. Elmo's once to say you've been, then go to a good steakhouse.

The structure of the building makes it impossible to enjoy the wait, even if you have reservations, you still have to wait. The alley way to get to the reservation desk to be seated is so full of people waiting, you can hardly get throught to be seated. I had lobster because I don't eat red meat and it was incredibly tough and overpriced. The rest of our party had steak which was not prepared very well per requested. The whole overall experience would never lead me back to that restaurant. I expect good service and good food quality for the amount of the bill.

Good steak, but very crowded seating. excellent shrimp. There are better places in town. Try Sullivan's or Mortons.

Aside from the shrimp cocktail I have found St. Elmo's to be very disapointing. My food was average and the price was way above average.

This place is living on a long dead reputation. The food is average & the service is abominable. If I want to be treated that rudely, I'll visit my ex-wife.

Wasn't impressed at all for the price. The atmosphere in the dining area isn't good seating too close and lights too bright

I was very disappointed to find they did not offer Ribeye as a steak choice. This is my favorite and I feel it is the most tasty. My husband wanted to order Prime Rib, but his onlly option for that was to get a 32 ounce slab!! Now, who can eat 2 pounds of meat (plus potatoes and salad) in one sitting?! We wondered why, if this restaurant is know for their steaks, they wouldn't offer a larger variety of steaks and have more than one size of Prime Rib... On the up-side, the food was good and the service was great!

Great for an old well known spot for out of towners who have heard about it. Quality is inconsistent and steak has no taste. Portions are huge though. When I moved here 6 years ago, it was wonderful, but has gone downhill since then.

If you are in Indy for one of the big races this is where you might see some of the participants. The night before pole day of the last CART Indy race I was in the back room when Lola importer Carl Haas came in with World Champion driver Nigel Mansel. On our way out I saw Roger Penske and Teddy Mayer in one of the private dinning rooms.

St elmo's is a nice place to impress friends with all the famous pictures and great shrimp cocktail. However the steaks are not as good as other places in the metro area.

I can make a much better steak for much less money. St. Elmo's steaks lack seasoning and they offer very few side dishes. I was quite disappointed.

The only time I ever had a problem at St. Elmo's was when I was a young man and thought that all steaks were to be cooked to a cinder with a flamethrower. The waiter convinced me to try a Medium rare setting and now, more than thirty (30) years later I'm still enjoying the excellent taste of beef done to perfection.
Having lived in Indianapolis most of my life it has been a pity to see some of the family restaurants go by the wayside due to "modernization". Thankfully you can still get perfection at St. Elmo's!

Having eaten here once I would never eat here again. The food was over-priced. The space was cramped. We sat at a table where the two parties next to us might as well have been sitting at our table. We could not have a conversation because of their proximity. I could barely sqeeze between the table to go to the restroom, luckily I am not a big person or it would have been impossible. To top off the evening, our waiter proceeded to put the wine and stuff from the table next to us on our table. As if we had the room and we were extra space. All in all the food was ok, with someplace like Ruth Chris or Texas Roadhouse being a much better pick for food quality. The service was not great and the atmosphere was nothing to write home about.
