Bought puppy one year ago. He was very sick and cost alot in vet bills the first few weeks we had him. UB's paid for most of the emergency bills. At one year old he doesn't look like a purebred to us.

A while back, my aunt paid $50 for a texel guinea pig. Texels are the rarest of all the long haired breeds so my aunt knew I would love him. He was separated way to early fron his litter. He should be full grown by now but he's like 3/4 the size of my others. There over charge for there pigs. They charge $40 for an aby guinea pig (which we have a pet store near us. Main street pets) which has 2. Females for $20.) )And they are healthy. Ive owned 8 pigs and I voluntier there in the rodent department) he is very mean and fights with my other males. Even why he was still a baby. We've gotten two from there. And the other one was terribly ripped up

We buy our fish here all the time. They seem to be healthy and the employees seem to have some knowledge. I don't expect them to be experts.
My problem comes with the mammals they sell. I stopped in to look at the puppies, thinking we might get one or two. I was interested in boxers. There were 2 available. They were both good looking, but both sneezed continually. When I asked about the breeders, I was told the breeder's name. Both puppies were listed as having the same breeder - but they were almost exactly a month apart. I asked about their ages and how long they'd been there: one was just 8 weeks and had been there for over a week, the other was a 12 week old that was transfered from another store - they didn't know how long it had been there.
I looked up the breeder's name on the internet, and found LOTS of puppies of different breeds having been bought from Uncle BIll's, all with the same breeder name. ALL with health issues when purchased. This leads me to believe that Uncle Bill's is buying from a puppy farm/mill. Plus, they'll only guarantee the puppies if you buy food from them (over priced) and vitamins (over priced and unneeded with proper diet). The price for a boxer puppy? $890 at Uncle Bill's. I found reputable breeders selling puppies for $300-$400. They offer health guarantees period. I'll take those.

My mother purchased a 3 month old what we thought was a beagle/bichon mix, for $400, had him for 2 days and my husband and I had to take him to the clinic(their clinic), where he was diagnosed w/ kennel cough and an infection, we had to go back 3 times, because he wouldn't take the medicine thru his food, I was even afraid to leave him home, because we didn't know if he would come out of it, it wouldn't have been bad but the nurse at their clinic told me thats what we get for buying a dog at a pet store, mind you I went the adoption route, thru petsmart, it wasn't u adopting the pet, it was the pet adopting u, they had so much red tape, How do u explain that to a then 5 year old little boy, who just wanted a dog, I went to the animal shelters, they wanted me to adopt a pit bull. Sorry, got 2 kids, not going to happen. Which is why we went to Uncle Bill's. Thankfully, he is doing much better, he is my third child, spoiled by our kids. It wouldn't be so bad, but when I found out from my vet last year that I don't have a beagle mix, he is terrier mix. I called Uncle Bill's and the guy on the phone's response was we don't lie, I can sue you, your vet, and anyone else for false acccusations. All I wanted to know was the number to the breeder. He said he would have the store owner or manager call me, that was a year ago, still haven't gotten a call back. so for all the people that say this is a wonderful store, really you might want to get a second opinion on that animal you purchased, it amy be some other type of breed. This is for you Merlin Blythe, my corgi who was also purchased at Uncle Bills on July 4, 2000, died on my birthday April 8, 2009, who passed away from an undiagnosed blood disease, which he possibly inherited, and our little guy Scrappy Doo Blythe, the goofiest dog I have ever seen!! Yeah, we bought two dogs from them, but they got a good home and lots of love, and we won't purchase another one from them AGAIN!

I have read alot of negative reports on Uncle Bill's Pet Center. I can not speak on how they treat their animals, but I can speak on how they treat their employees. BAD! I think the daughter Laura needs to respect her employees and remember without them those stores could not stay open. Just because your daddy ownes it doesn't mean you can disrespect people. Laura needs to adleast put a smile on her face and act like she likes what she's doing.

Wake up people, what do you think the amish does? NO not all Amish are puppy mills, but most of them do...If your lucky enough to get the breeder info, tell them you would like to go see there kennel.9 out of 10 times you wont get the breeder, you will get a "messenger" and they will not disclose where they are actually located.....

The staff is beaten into submission. Fear is the Wilson family motto. They are obviously all afraid for their jobs. If they do not lie to the customers, they will be fired. They are ordered to lie to all customers. Puppy mills? Yes.. Amish puppy mills.
Graber, Wagler, Knepp. All the same community, all in the same barn. I know several people with Uncle Bills puppies. They all have the same breeders. I count 9 puppies in 9 families but only 3 breeders. Several breeders have the SAME last name. Interesting.
Contact the BBB, Fair labor board, OSHA and some civil rights attornies.

Im a frequent customer of the Uncle Bill's in Fort Wayne. I've bought two Leopard Geckos from them, a regular and an albino. Both are super healthy for now, I've had one for 5-6 months and the other for about two. Staff are super friendly and know what they are talking about, for the most part; one of the geckos was incorrectly sexed, but it's hard to sex them when they are as young as they were. I will say, in response to another post about an A+ rating with the BBB, a business must pay the BBB in order to receive an A+. So the BBB is not to be trusted. Overall they take much better care of their reptiles than Petco or Petsmart. Petware House takes even better care of their animals, with an unbelievably dedicated staff.

I can't see how anybody can take most of these reviews seriously. I was reading one that says Uncle Bill's is supposedly bad, then the writer seemed too be speaking in ebonics and using horrible grammar. If you can't study English, I am not trusting you to rate a pet shop that you don't know a thing about, unless you work there. As far as my own comments on Uncle Bill's, I'm surprised with them. I called a pet shop to ask a simple question about hermit crabs, once, and he screwed himself out of a customer twice over after uttering just one single sentence. From what I know of Uncle Bill's, the employees actually know about these misunderstood and underestimated creatures. That says a lot considering "normal people" buy them for kids and practically guarantee them a very early death. For the record I'm not a hypocrite about grammar, this comment box won't allow my phone to paragraph.

I recently purchased 2 Maltese puppies from the Fishers location. And I like most got a free vet visit to VCA. Took my puppies and he said they were fine. Well I also took them to my own vet and had them checked out. They are perfect little puppies with no health concerns. The staff that I dealt with were very knowledgable and very caring toward the animals. I have been told by many that they deal with puppy mills. Well depending on who you talk to you can hear anything that you dig deep enough to hear. Maybe they do maybe they dont, only a select few know the truth, but I can say that i have 2 very active, intelegent puppies that give my husband and I alot of enjoyment and I would not trade them for the world. Everyone wants to blaim Uncle Bills for health concerns of there puppies, that develope later in life. Who do you blaim for your baby being born with health problems? Nothing is guaranted. Thank you Lori and staff for giving me the opportunity to have such great puppies. I am very satisfied with mine and highly recommend Uncle Bills to everyone.

Awful They use puppy mills even though they say they don't. Watch the Puppy Pipeline that channel 13 ran. They are RIGHT on TARGET. There are ALOT of sick puppies that you don"t see. They have a contract with VCA animal hospitals Thats why you get the free visit with them after you buy a very overpriced inbred puppy. Do your homework. If you HAVE to HAVE a purebred find a reputable breeder. Better yet go to the local shelter or call a rescue group. There are SO MANY NICE dogs and cats waiting for homes. Uncle Bills hopes you want to save a puppy from living in a cage. THAT is what keeps them and the puppy mills in $$$$$

Terrible.
When I was four my father bought me my first Mini Dachshund from Uncle Bill's. When I was eight we had to put him down due to a hereditary problem.

We went back to Uncle Bill's and he got me another Mini Dachshund, which he had to take back because it wouldn't stop vomiting all over the place and was extremely sickly from the get go.

That puppy was replaced free of charge with another Mini Dachsund, which, when I was 12, fell to the same hereditary issue as the first.
An issue that only arises from BAD breeding from PUPPY MILLS.

My father then threatened to sue the holy hell out of Uncle Bill's, so they cut him a $600 check.

Which we took to a breeder for a Mini Dachsund puppy which is now 10 years old.
Never one medical issue with her.

Not to mention, they're terribly overpriced.

Ok so I was first excited to go to Uncle Bills. I mean, the store is like a petting zoo and everything with a ton of animls. But, unfortunately to my dissapointment, even though the store was full of puppies and kittens, they were not taken care of. I'm no expert but aren't kittens supposed to be lively and playful and curious? Well the kittens at Uncle Bills had droopy eyes filled with gunk and were just laying around doing nothing. They didn't even chase a piece of string I was dragging around for them, which is unusual for young kittens.

So it was obvious that some of the animals were not as healthy as they should be but what really bothered me was the employment. My family was looking for a society finch to befriend our single one at home. (Society finches must have rommates for they are extremely social). We picked out a very pretty one that looked the healthiest out of all of the ones in they cage. But to my dismay when we got home we found out that is was the WRONG FINCH. The store completely had the different breeds of finches together even though they told us that it was the type of finch we were looking for. It turned out the finch was a spice finch instead of a society finch. Shouldn't the employees know what breeds of birds are what?

So after my experience with Uncle Bill's pet store I've have concluded that although it is full of the most cutest and exotic animals, the animals are not taken care of and the place had unhelpful staff workers.

Uncle bills was amazing! They were so helpful with choosingout a family friendly guard dog we eventually. Chose 2 dogs, a boxer and corg from uncle bills on east washington st. They r the 2 best dogs any one can ask 4. We love the store we got our dogs from 2 very much. The staff was very helpful while the kids were off looking at fish we were able 2 ask questions and choose the dogs. You see they get their dogs from breeders so they no every thing about these dogs and how they were raised so those of u that want an animal u should go 2 uncle bills where the best of the best work!

Today, I walked into the store hoping for a Russian tortoise. I walked in and my heart immediately sunk. The animals were in incredibly small cages. The rabbits were two to a cage that was no more than 2 square feet. The dogs were on wire floor which is terrible for their feet. The birds were about 50 to incredibly small cages. All in all, the animals were in incredibly small cages, not cared for well, and overcrowded. I hate to give it such a bad review, but it, unfortunately, deserves it.

There are so many animals in our area that need a good home--please consider adoption over buying from this store. Go to www.petfinder.com to find a pet that you can welcome into your family from rescues that care about their animals.

I have been at the Uncle Bill's in Fort Wayne that just opened up in February, and I have not had a SINGLE problem! All the animals are well fed and cleaned. I have read over many of the posts here, and I believe that many of you are overreacting. Puppies get sick... they just do. And Uncle Bill's gives them meds for it. They have a vet come in once a week to check on the puppies and kittens, and all of them are up to date of their vaccs are wormings.(if you went to the vet to have that done it could add up to $500 just by itself, so their dogs are worth the money) And about the whole "puppy mill" thing, If you USDA is ok with it and all the dogs are healthy, why does is matter? I watched the vid of the "puppy pipeline" and it looked like they had PLENTY of room to move around too. They are well fed, and, just like Mr. Street said, they have all their basic needs met... even a human would be happy with that. Those dogs are better off than 3/4 of the earth's population. The fish are GREAT! None of that Wal Mart crap. If you go in the morning you'll find of dead ones, but they clean them out ASAP. Some times the "fish person" doesn't get there till noon anyway. So just chill. All the small animals (yes, even the hamsters who CAN be more than one to a cage) are well fed and clean. The reason some hamsters get wet tail is because of their food. if you have a problem, feed only rat pellets. Those don't upset their tummy. And the birds are the best! Many had tamed, and lovable! All cages clean. In general, the store just smelled GREAT! Not like a pet store AT ALL!^_^ Nothing but GOOD THINGS!^_^

I am a customer of Uncle Bills in Fishers. I have purchased two dogs from them. I have had absolutely no problems with my dogs. They are smart and very healthy. I would recommend them to any one interested in getting a puppy. The staff there are wonderful and very helpful and friendly. Best pet store for sure. Don' t just go on what every one on here has to say go see for yourself and be the judge. If we believe everything we read in today's world then a lot of us are in trouble. As far as the pricing goes on their puppies I researched breeder's as well before making my decision. Their prices were the same without health guarantees and only one shot if any were given to their puppies, so it was much more worth going to Uncle Bills. I had went through a breeder with my first dog before the two I now own. My puppy with the breeder had worms and kennel cough and I had to pay for all of that. So to let you know, it doesn't matter where you get your puppy from it can have issues, they are puppies. To say only Uncle Bills has sick dogs is not fair. To also let you know the two dogs I had purchased from Uncle Bills I ended up have a liter of puppies and I turned around and sold them to Uncle Bills and I am not a puppy mill so to say that is the only place they get their puppies from is a lie as well. I am a private breeder not a puppy mill. So please visit the store and come up with your own opinion and don't go own others opinions. Don't just assume. These reviews irate me and offend me.

I am a faithful customer of Uncle Bills and have been for many years now. I have just read every single one of these reviews and I am sadden by them. People really need to get their facts right before giving them a review. Most if not all of these reviews have been fabricated more than likely by animal right activist that are opposed to pet stores in general. This is not a chain pet store that is nation wide. It is a small Indiana family owned business. I frequently shop at the Fishers location although I have visited the other locations excluding the Greenwood location. The Fisher's location I have found VERY clean with VERY friendly and knowledgeable employees. You can tell that the staff really cares for these animals. They are all animal lovers. I have personally seen them cleaning cages and bathing dogs every time I have been there. I have myself purchased my dog from there. Which I can say without a doubt is a healthy happy dog. I have never had one problem. I am not against going to shelter's or Humane Societies to get pets from the only bad thing about doing that is if you have small children you must be very cautious about which one to choose. Most of these facilities are over ran by pit bull's or pit bull mixes that are older and more than likely are there because of issues. When searching for the perfect puppy I looked into a lot of different breeder's that had facilities that were unclean and puppies that had very little if any social skills. At Uncle Bills my perfect puppy was happy, healthy, clean, and very social. I say leave enough alone. There are bigger issues today to complain about like starving American's out of work and no health care. People get a life.

I was looking to buy a hedgehog and my google search brought up this page. I have read all these complaints about the unhealthy puppies and high prices....WOW! Out of curiosity I went to the Better Business Bureau's website and searched for complaints against Uncle Bill's. There have only been 2 complaints filed in the last 36 months! If you truly want to help stop the purchasing from puppy mills, and have been so unhappy with Uncle Bill's, why hasn't anyone taken the time to report these problems? Currently Uncle Bill's shows an "A+" rating with the BBB.

I purchased a Bichon/Havanese mix from Uncle Bill's in Noblesville. I immediately took my dog to one of the pre-approved vets for a check-up. Not only did my dog have crystals in her urine, she also had coccidia and giardia, two very contagious conditions. She was on antibiotics for months. I looked on her paperwork for the breeder's name and searched the name on the internet. I was shocked that my dog came from one of the largest puppy mills in the state of Minnesota which was owned by this breeder. This puppy mill is known for cutting the vocal cords of the dogs so that the neighbors can't hear the dogs barking. Also, the puppy mill had their license revoked and can't sell dogs that are AKC licensed anymore. That's why the puppy mill has started selling "designer" breeds. Our dog is happy and healthy now, but had we not purchased her, I'm afraid she may have died. I'll never purchase a dog from them again.

My husband and I purchased our German Shepherd Dog from the Uncle Bill's on 38th street and we are very happy with our experience! Not only did we receive great customer service, but a very beautiful, healthy puppy as well! The young girl that helped us was very knowledgeable and helpful. My shepherd is as happy as can be and is getting very big. This is a great store and I will continue to shop here.

They are a good place to learn about saltwater fish, but dogs... no way... I bought my weim from there and they told me all this crap about where she was from and how she was grautnted.

within two weeks after I bought her I was sitting at the vet with my 800 dollar dog dieing and I called uncle bills for help because I could not afforod to help her... I even talked to the owner and they told me all this crap how the dog was grautened that is why I bout the dog, but the one problem my dog had was somthing else and they would not help. I ended up taking out a credit card to pay for my dog to be fixed....

Uncle bills is a puppy mill seller they tell you crap to sell you the dog and once you buy it your srewed and they could care less.

don't buy a dog from them find a breeder in Indianapolis...

Bought my husky in 2007 and saw an ad to get a free puppy report to see where he can from and as i thought uncle bills deals with puppy mills. I purchased him for 600 from Uncle Bills in Greenwood. The day after we got him we took him to the vet and he had kennel cough and was given medicine for it. At least i know i gave at least 1 dog a good home. How horrible...

Anyone who lives in the greater Indianapolis area should be familiar with Uncle Bill??s Pet Centers. The phrase ??Voted #1 Pet Centers in Indianapolis? is splayed across their website. According to UncleBills.com, the store was started on the east side of Indianapolis in 1985 by Bob Wilson and named for the original owner??s love of animals; today it is run by the founder??s son and grandchildren. They describe themselves as carrying ??quality? pets, goods, and services. I am here to tell you that if Bob Wilson loved pets as much as their advertising claims, he must be appalled at his legacy and treatment of animals in pet stores that bear his name. I bring your attention to Uncle Bill??s Greenwood location on US 31, south of Indianapolis. Immediately when one walks into the establishment, the stench of unwashed cages and filthy pets hits your nostrils. I can??t speak to the condition of other animals carried by the chain, but when it comes to rodents, namely hamsters, I pride myself on twelve years of personal experience, study, and dedication to the care of these critters. Uncle Bill??s Greenwood houses their rodents in a hallway with little ventilation, the cages stacked one upon another in the entrance way to the store??s grooming area. The small animals they carry, including chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, and rabbits, don??t look or act healthy. This establishment??s caretaking of hamsters is second-rate at best and dangerous at worst. Indianapolis laws Sec. 531-401 feature general requirements for animal care and treatment, the very first of which maintains that by law all animals must be ??kept in a clean, sanitary and healthy manner and [are] not confined so as to be forced to stand, sit or lie in [their] own excrement; the person(s) responsible for animal(s) shall regularly and as often as necessary to prevent odor or health and sanitation problems, maintain all animal areas or areas of animal contact.? According to Indiana law 35-46-3-7, the abandonment or neglect of a vertebrate animal is a Class B Misdemeanor. The treatment of UBPC??s animals is neglect. The cages are dirty and poorly-ventilated, and the pets are sick. Even if an animal gets sick at the pet store had there under acceptable conditions, it is a pet establishment??s responsibility to the public and the other pets present to remove the unhealthy animal and seek veterinary assistance; if the animal cannot be healed by veterinary or other measures, the animal should must be humanely euthanized and appropriately disposed of.

I just visited uncle bills looking for a small dog. they had a beautiful maltese/yorkie with great personality. The employee let us hold him then i found out he was $1100.00!!!! for a mix breed. Then employee was even shocked at how much he was.Every human being needs to come together and close this place down. This puppy will not get adopted and placed back into a puppy mill to die.Uncle bills should be ashamed. I understand to pay for a dog but $1100.00. No one should be allowed to open any pet store who only cares money. No one at uncle bills has a heart because if they did they would go out of their way to help those puppies get adopted

10 days ago I took my Maltese with me to purchase food, etc. at Uncle Bills. We were looking at the caged doggies when the saleslady brought one of them out of the kennels to play with my little dog. She had mentioned it had been treated for kennel cough but was okay now. The weekend following (7 days later) I went to Chicago for Mother's Day. While there my little dog (6 pounds) started coughing to the point I had to take him to the ER vets. His diagnoses was a virus he has picked up from another animal. When I told the vet about my experience at Uncle Bills she informed me that that was the culprit. Even though my dog is current on all of his vaccinations he still contracted the virus from this dog at Uncle Bills. I am out $400 plus I missed my son's Mother's Day luncheon. I am so upset. I will no longer frequent Uncle Bills needless to say.

I will be contacting them to let them know that their dogs are sick, but I doubt it will make a difference. Poor little things.

I searched "Uncle Bill's" to find a phone number I could use to contact a manager of the store. And came upon all these reviews, which only confirmed my suspicions, and made my heart fall. The reason I was looking for a number was because I visited one of the locations earlier this evening (which is the first time I've ever been to one) and had one of the most heart wrenching experiences of my life. I was asked if I wanted to hold one of the Persian kittens and couldn't resist. However as soon as I held the sweet kitten I could smell something awful, so I sniffed the top of her head, which did smell, but worse, I knew that couldn't be it so I looked under her tummy/tail and there was a large clump of hardened matted feces stuck to her rear. I don't even know if the poor animal could go to the bathroom. She was a fluffy furry Persian and all of that fur was just stuck to that horrible ball of poop!! I set her back in the cage (when home, I immediately washed my coat) and told the kid who opened it for me that she smelled bad, and that what was going on was not good at all. He went to get someone else - a woman who didn't seem to have a compassionate bone in her body, who proceeded to jerk the kitten back out of the cage and march to the back. I was stunned. I left the shop feeling as if I'd just witnessed a tragedy. I have a feeling that the poor kitten was not handled very gently as the clump was pulled from it's fur and skin. I will never, ever, frequent an Uncle Bill's location, they will never receive my business, and further, I wish that I could do something to shut this place down. Please, let's do what we can to help helpless animals. Do not support this place any longer. Do not give them your business.

I don't really know where to start. For a long time, I frequented the store to buy pet supplies and then one day I went in and purchased a Shih Tzu for $750. I felt so sorry for her! It took over a week to get the urine smell out of her fur, to begin with. After taking her to the vet, I found out that she had double ear infections, which Uncle Bill's did pay for. My parents were not so lucky when they recently purchased a puppy for $600. She was 2-3 months old and as soon as they got her home they noticed she had fleas. A few days later, she started coughing to the point where she couldn't breathe and they took her to an emergency vet at 3am to find she has a severe case of Kennel Cough. Uncle Bill's refused to pay this bill bc it wasn't one of their appointed vets, however none of the ones they referred were open for emergency care...and she was gasping for air. At her first vet appointment, we found out she had double ear infections. Four days later, we find out she had roundworms and take her back to the vet. In addition, she had an additional parasite, which I don't recall the exact name of, but it's contracted through contaminated water. They claim that their dogs are sold healthy, but after two bad experiences of my own, and others I've heard from other customers, I'd have to say they are outright lying. I strongly advise against purchasing animals from this store. All of the health problems that our dogs contracted were contagious, and the vet said that most likely all of their dogs have similar viruses/parasites. Go to the pound and pick out a dog...they'lll be in much better condition than any dog you'll buy from Uncle Bill's. Last, but not least, there have recently been frequent protesters outside saying that they receive their dogs from puppy mills. I don't regret buying my dog, bc I love her, but they have definitely lost a customer here.

I bought my minpin from Uncle Bill's and she has been a wonderful addition to our home...she was active healthy and playful when we first went to the store...she still is and I thank Uncle Bills for her...the store is clean and so are the puppies..
Every time I have been there they have been feeding puppies, cleaning cages or cleaning puppies...They seem to be well cared for before buying....I purchased her on highway 40...i have never been to the Greenwood store so I cannot comment on it. I do think the pricing is quite high..but it probably takes a lot to feed and care for a pup...Get one somewhere cheaper and chances are they are not well taken care of...
Show me some proof before I'm a believer about the puppy mills

Thank-you Uncle Bills for my little girl

I recently bought a $600 puppy from the store. She is a sweatheart but growls when she is eating. One reason why she growled the first night however was because she was starving. During the car ride home, she vomited and it was clear. If she had been fed, wouldn't common sense tell you her vomit would have been colored from the dog food?
Anyways, I was instructed to buy a certain puppy food and vitamin paste stuff that would prevent hypoglycemia and also keep her under the warranty if she came down with a cold or something. After I got her home (3 hours later) I scheduled a vet appointment for her to get checked out. Come to find out because of the appointment, the food that I was told to feed her is a really bad type and can cause hypoglycemia and the vitamin paste I bought actually counteracts the effects of the dog food! On top of that, the vet said she has an over bite. I was NEVER informed of any of these details. I would not recommend Uncle Bill's to anyone. They are way over priced and the puppies are not treated very well. At least by buying my puppy, she is going to be treated the right way and not abused.

My daughter recently purchased 2 hamsters from this store in Fishers Indiana and was given a guarantee as to their health. Within 3 days one of them died and the other died 5 days after that from WET TAIL disease. These animals were put in a brand new cage also purchased from this store and had fresh bedding that was purchased at the store too. When we contacted the store they refused to refund our money or replace the animals. They were obviously contaminated when we purchased them and it is sad that the state of Indiana would let a business like this one continue. I will probably be contacting the Better Business Bureau about this company. The refund would have only been $13 but this company would rather have the money than a good reputation. DO NOT BUY from Uncle Bill's Pet Center! Go to a reputable Pet Store.

We bought an Italian grey hound for $699 on 12/8/07 at Uncle Bill's Pet Center, 38th street location. He did one hacking cough while we played with him before purchasing. The store employee just kept telling the dog to cough it up as if he had something caught in his throat. It stopped and we thought nothing of it. An hour after buying the dog, we were at the vet. He had a horrible hacking cough that came on strong. It was "kennel cough." We were sold a sick dog for $699.! The clinic told us it was very common at Uncle Bill's. It's now 12/27/07 and he's as sick as ever. He's been to the vet 3 times and he's been on 2 different antibiotics. We got Uncle Bill's to refund $100 of the purchase price and they are paying the related vet bills. I'm still awaiting reimbursment for one of the bills though.
We have a very contageous puppy and were not able to take him to our Christmas visit out of town at my parent's house (they have 2 dogs). This was terribly disappointing. Uncle Bill's agreed to keep him in their isolation area for the 4 days we would be out of town. so we would not put my parent's dogs at risk. Upon our return we found they neglected to give him 1 day's worth of his antibiotic and cough medicine. We also found none of this blankets or toys were given to him in his cage!!! They were all still perfectly folded as I left them in the bag. The store employee had to search for our bag of stuff at our request when we picked the dog up. How sad.

Please also watch New Channel 13 Nov 27 news story about Uncle Bill's and the Indiana puppy mill before buying. All the parents of these puppies live their lives confined to a cage at Amish farms. All they do is breed, no freedom, no love. It's horrible. I feel terrible we supported such an operation. Don't make the same mistake I did. DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM UNCLE BILL'S OR ANY OTHER PET STORE. GO TO A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER. EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO GET ON A LONG WAITING LIST AND WAIT MONTHS - JUST DO IT. I was on a waiting list for 3 months and had a $500 deposit down with a breeder before all this happened. Unfortunately the breeder doubled the price of the dogs when they were ready for adoption and I did not want to spend $1950 on a dog. I wish I had just spend the money now knowing those dogs were raised the right way.

I also noticed all the small animals could be grabbed an held by any one who walked in the store. These animals were being mishandled. Rabbits and birds especially cannot take this kind of mistreatment. It will scar them for life.

Dogs seemed depressed. One kitten had a red swollen anus and another runny eyes and were generally not energetic. They need a staff veterinarian which they apparently don't have. What authority can we report this to? It's very, very sad.

In November, I visited the Greenwood location. I was interested in purchasing an African Pygmy Hedgehog as a personal pet as well as a classroom pet. I was told that I would need to place an order and would receive a baby hedgehog on or about the first of December. I requested a FEMALE and was assured that I would receive a FEMALE. I was contacted by the store and told that the
FEMALE, baby hedgehog had arrived and could be picked up. Since I live in Bloomington, I traveled to Greenwood on December
3 and claimed my pet. Upon receiving her, I found her to be a
sweet, wonderful little creature who I fell in love with instantly.
The students in my class adored her and the entire school was
enthralled by her. However, this week I was shocked to discover a
major problem. While reading through information on a website
about African Pygmy Hedgehogs, I came upon a page labeled
Male or Female. The pictures on this page revealed that I did not
have a FEMALE, but had been given a MALE instread. As I looked at the picture, I was trying to think of how I would go about telling my students, the parents who have visited our room, the entire
school and everyone who knows I have a hedgehog, that I have
a male rather than a female which has been named Hedgie Sue. If the pet had just been for my own personal enjoyment, I would have simply changed the name and no harm would have been done. However, the students are going to have a hard time changing a mindset they have for her/him and frankly, I do not relish the experience of telling them that the little belly button on Hedgie Sue's tummy is, indeed, a penis. Because I was not familiar with the genitals of a hedgehog, I trusted the pet store to give me the gender I had requested. I even told my students that the little button on her belly WAS her belly button because that is what it looks like.
When I called the store in Greenwood, they referred me to another party in another Uncle Bill's store. This person was willing to
give me another hedgehog, a female, if I would bring the male
back. The problem with this solution is that hedgehogs bond to their owners in the first 6-8 weeks of their lives. This hedgehog
has bonded to me and to take it back to the store to be sold to another party who may or may not have a good experience with
bonding is not even a considered solution. I would have liked an
apology, an offer of something for damages, something that showed
that there was remorse for the error. Instead, I was told that
the exchange was the only thing possible until I persisted. I was then offered the chance to buy a female at a lesser price and keep the male. Upon further discussion, I was granted a (small) partial refund of my purchase price. The party I spoke to blamed the breeder for marking the hedgehog incorrectly. I feel that even if this was the case, Uncle Bill's ultimately has the responsibility to know what animals they receive and to make sure they are selling what they are representing. I hope this is a lesson for the employees of the store and would hope that no one else will have to go through this type of disappointment or problem with this establishment. I will NOT buy anything else from the Uncle Bill's stores, not even a bag of food. I hope that others have a better experience than I have had, but I felt that I shoud caution people to watch closely and question the "experts" when purchasing animals from them.

The people here are friendly and know about animals. I bought my lovely Kitty here and they were very helpful in making sure I had everything I needed. Their prices on some items are pricey but the Dog and cat prices are fair even better when they are having a sale got my pure breed Himalayan Kitty for $299.99

PROS: GREAT ANILMALS
CONS: SOME OF THE PRICES

I recently called the Uncle Bills Pet Center on E. Washington St. to ask if they carried a particular brand of bird pellets. The girl I spoke with assured me they did so my family and I traveled there (this is a 45 min drive from where we live). When we arrived we shopped around for a few minutes and I asked an employee to help me find the bird pellets and was informed they do not carry them. I explained that I had called but got no response from the employee. While in the store we saw several instances of customers abusing the animals. There was a large plastic enclosure sitting low to the ground filled with young parakeets, at least 50 birds were inside (WAY to many for the enclosure). The top was open and several children were picking these poor birds up by their tails. Bunnies being kept in the same type of enclosure were being grossly mishandled. A group of teenage boys were beating on the fishtanks to scare the fish and an African Gray parrot was being antagonized in an attempt to make it bite. I wish it would have. In all of these cases an employee was there and watching but never made any comment. I realize in the retail world the customer is always right, but it seems in the pet trade industry there would be more empathy for the health and wellbeing of the animal in their care. After all these animals are supposed to be a pet to someone. All in all it was a horrible experience and we will not return to any Uncle Bills store.

I have had several exerperiences purchasing live animals from this store and I have been thoughly disgusted by their practices. One example would be they time my daughter went their in search of a hamster. The males and femals were all housed together in one tank! Hamsters are soliatary animals and will fight to the death if kept together! They also reproduce like mad!!
