The following is the email I sent to Hacienda corporate after MY LAST visit to their restaurant:

I visited your South Bend, IN restaurant on Fri 2-18-11 with some friends and was not at all satisfied with the service. Our server "XXXXX" was very slow getting our drinks, we received our drinks almost ten minutes after ordering (keep in mind we're eating dry chips and spicy salsa this whole time). We had to ask for every little thing and then wait to get it - XXXXX was not pro-active to our needs at all ( napkins, more salsa, another Coke, etc.). When I did finally see her ( she wasn't available very much during our dinner ) and I did ask for another Coke it was at least Ten minutes before she brought my drink - by then I had finished my meal. She brought our bill and then disappeared again - I finally gave the bill and cash to a manager who must have found XXXXX and gave it to her. XXXXX then asked me IF I needed any change back, which is the same as asking for a tip. My friends also picked -up on this and we commented on how rude
and poorly trained XXXXX was. My friends were the ones who suggested Hacienda- they sort of apologized. Our bill for three was approx $47.00 ( we all split the bill). I expected better from a national chain like Hacienda.

To top it all off the food really is not very good - for the money we spent we could have gotten good food at any number of REAL Mexican restaurants in the area!!!

And to the "former" employee who's review appears on this page - you need to remember a TIP is for EXCEPTIONAL service, a little something extra fo DOING something extra! And if YOU don't like THAT go to school and learn how to do something besides wait tables!!!

First let me start out by saying, I know several people who have worked for several of the various Haciendas. Their employees for the most part get treated like absolute crap, not by the management, but by the snobby, rude-ass customers that come in to Hacienda. Customers literally run their server's ass off and end up leaving them a whopping $3 tip on a $25 bill...which in case you're an idiot and cannot do math, that's not even a 15% tip. The vast majority of Hacienda patrons are constantly demanding of their chips and salsa. They get drunk off their cheap margaritas and act like complete idiots. I've seen it first hand as a fellow Hacienda customer. People stumble half-drunk out of the bar and walk in to the host closet thinking it's the bathroom. It's pathetic. Then people have the audacity to b*tch and complain that either A.) The service wasn't good enough or B.) The food tasted awful.
So what happens? They get some type of comp letter, and guess what? Their ass is right back at Hacienda the next week enjoying the same "garbage" food they had last week and the same "terrible" service they had to endure. Except this time their meal is either free or discounted so the only thing they have left to b*tch about (which they will) is not getting their chips fast enough.
So keep that in mind fellow Hacienda patrons. Yes, I have heard some horror stories from fellow customers regarding the Hacienda employees, but I have also heard my share of horror stories about Hacienda customers. Everytime I go to eat, I always try to leave a decent tip unless the service was absolutely unbearable. If you can't afford a 20% tip, maybe you should consider fiesta to go, instead of ruining your server's night with an awful tip.

Hacienda is great! For all you ignorant people, it's not supposed to be authenthic Mexican food. It's Mexican-American, and everyone knows it going in! The salsa is great and the wet burritos to die for. There is a reason you have to wait to get in most nights...it's THAT good!

Hacienda is good...if you're new to Mexican food. Don't get me wrong, the food is edible. Not great, but not awful. It's just not authentic. At all. When it comes to the atmosphere, the same can be said. Not authentic at all. Their stereotypical 'Mexican' decor and the fact that they make their employees greet you by saying "Hola", just comes across as incredibly fake, almost to the point that it's annoying. I'm sure that your typical suburbanite Hacienda patron just eats it up though.

So, to sum it up, if you're looking for a Mexican beer or are desperate for some moderately priced "Mexican"- like food and there are no other places around (which is not the case in South Bend), Hacienda will work. Otherwise, stay away. It is definitely not worth any more than a five minute wait. Places like Mazatlan or La Esperanza are much better.

As a native Texan, I know what Mexican is supposed to be. Hacienda has NOTHING of quality. When the salsa is tomato sauce with onions, you know you have a problem. The margaritas are fine, but nothing to write home about, especially when the food is sub-par. No amount of excellent customer service and no amount of tequila can rescue the horrendously Americanized, bland food Hacienda dares to serve and call Mexican. You're better served at La Esperanza, Rico's, or any restaurant on Western with a Mexican name.

The only reason it even gets one star is because that is the minimum. Not only is the service atrocious, but the food is NOT even close to consumable. I guess I should not be surprised that the food is bad at a "Mexican" restaurant that actually serves ranch dressing with the chips (literally). Here is the story... I have been there 5 times. I have only had to pay for one of those times because the service was so bad that the manager felt bad about it. The other time I shouldn't have paid, just walked out, but I have a sucker of a guilty conscience. The food is hands down the worst Mexican food I have ever had. From Arizona, I know I can be picky, but I also know what is good and bad. Hacienda is very very bad. There is no flavor, the salsa tastes like tomato sauce mixed with ketchup and the entrees are not appetizing at all. About the same fare you would get if you microwaved some taquitos from Martin's frozen section. If you are looking for good Mexican food in South Bend, SKIP HACIENDA! If all you want is some cool atmosphere and a watered down margarita, go to Red Lobster.

I have been a loyal patron of Hacienda Restaurants since they opened several decades ago. I have been to every Hacienda except the one in Evansville. I have always enjoyed Hacienda's good food, drink, atmosphere and pleasant staff. However, an incident which occurred during mid-August has changed my opinion about this restaurant. I went to the Hacienda Restaurant in Erskine Plaza (Miami Street, South Bend, Indiana) about 7:00 to get a drink and dinner. A young female bartender cursed and insulted me after I had been there about 30 minutes. The manager refused to listen to what had happened. The next day I discussed the matter with Dean Goodwin (an officer of the corp.) in his office on Ironwood Drive, South Bend. He assured me that he would investigate and contact me regarding the matter. When Mr. Goodwin failed to contact me by mid-September, I stopped by his office and this time the receptionist told me that although Mr. Goodwin was in, he was unable to see me but would promptly contact me. As of October 3, nobody from Hacienda has contacted me. I am very disappointed that Hacienda has failed to take any action regarding such a serious matter. I have related this matter to all of my numerous friends, family and co-workers along with the other restaurants I now frequent. Hopefully, nobody else will be subjected to such outrageous treatment at a Hacienda Restaurant.

Ok, I admit it, I'm a bit of a Mexican Food snob. I've lived in LA for the last 10 years and have enjoyed many amazing Mexican restaurants during that time. Hacienda ranks up there as one of my favorites. The chips and salsa are fantastic, the wet burrito is so good it makes me cry, and marguaritas are excellent. Maybe it's not as authentic as many of places in LA, but it's great and a fun experience.

PROS: Great Mexican food in South Bend
CONS: The feeling you get 2 hours after a full wet burrito

I love Hacendia. This is by far the best area resturant. The food is FABULOUS and their drink specials are great. A different one for every night of the week. I am a fan of the free chips and salsa as well. It is a great place to start your night before hitting the dance clubs and bars. A+
