Before I begin this review, please note that this is not an irrational tirade against Woodstock. I am simply telling you my experience from which you may draw your own conclusions.

I contacted veterinary clinics in the Lexington area and found that the average cost was around ~$75. This was fine, given that every place is a for-profit institution. Then, I contacted Woodstock and discovered that they provided the spaye for the same price and included a few additional shots with the surgery.

Upon arrival after the surgery, which only took an impressive seven hours after dropping her off, I was immediately stricken by one of the staff members smoking a cigarette inside of the office, only a few feet away from the kennels where the post-surgical animals are kept. I was a few minutes early and had to wait outside of the office. I had a McDonald's soft drink in my hand while waiting in my car. A second employee came outside to smoke alongside of the aforementioned first employee who had been smoking inside. This second employee, who is a volunteer and actually owns the "carpet lady" store beside of Woodstock, stated, "Someone threw out their McDonald's paper!" Picking up the trash, which was not from me, she came over to my car and confronted me about the trash. I shrugged off her snide comments and went inside to get my 17 week old puppy who had been spayed. When I went inside, she informed me that I had to purchase a cone collar to prevent my dog's licking her incision apart. Also, to make matters worse, she would not give me a collar due to the fact that because the store is not-for-profit, they do not give them out. So, I left with my recovering puppy and no collar. After driving around to three different pet stores, all the while with a moaning, suffering, and uncomfortable puppy, I finally found a collar for $25.

In summation, the reasons I am only giving one star to the Woodstock clinic are because of the aggressiveness and blatant lack of respect shown to me by the staff, the lack of information about post-operative needs (i.e. the cone collar), and the presence of cigarette smoke in the kennel where the animals were kept. Also, it was noticed that the clinic is using a computer that is owned by the University of Kentucky and is lent out to students who are unable to afford them. I cannot help but wonder why this place has rates comparable to those of for-profit clinics, yet has no "paid" staff and provides no additional services such as the cone collar after surgery.

Unfortunately, this will be my last and final time going to Woodstock. I am a firm supporter of local businesses and it saddens me that the quality of care and customer service is so poor here.

Thank you for your time,

Patrick

well, if they would answer the phone, i could review better. all i know is, i am low income and was told this would be the place to take my sick kitty. problem is, have been calling and leaving messages for 2 weeks with no reply. the reason i keep calling them is because i do not have $300 to fork over to a vet!!! i am handicapped and that is almost half of my monthly income. i guess they don't want to deal with a sick kitty or care. i'm assuming that they just don't care because they've never bothered to call back. i'm slowly watching my 12 year old die (that i've had since 4 weeks old and bottle fed) because there isn't one vet in this god forsaken crap hole that really cares about animals. they just care about money. what a shame.

I used to volunteer then work at Woodstock many years ago. Yes the receptionist can be gruff but she has a heart of gold & has more compassion for the animals than she does for humans...you tend to become this way after seeing how the animals are treated from their owners.

I've read all of the reviews and of course everyone is entitled to their own oppinion. I personally assisted (tech) with the surgeries for 3 years. They are not mistreated or abused at all. Anesthesia is administered thru the veins on dogs. They are left in their cages to wake up but are checked on constantly. Do you think the vet's office hold's your pet while its waking up? You should try holding an animal when its coming out from under anesthesia & when it bites your face, you will understand.

As far as swelling at the injection site, this can happen. Keep an eye on it. Does not have anything to do with too much being injected but how it spread under the skin. And in regards to swelling around the surgery site...I had my first dog neutered at Woodford Vet before I knew anything about spaying & neutering. He looked like he still had his testicles within a day of surgery. Sometimes the thread isn't tied tight enough & blood/fluid leaks into the leftover skin. I did not freak out & everything was fine. It eventually went away.

I endorse Woodstock & my vet's office. It just depends on your pocket book & what procedure you need.

Much love to anyone out there looking over the animals!

I've been going to Woodstock for years. The people there are great. They are cheap and your animal is never harmed or mistreated. The vet is very professional. If you have a problem with the people who work there, look at it from their perspective. This is a non-fund organization. The ladies that work there do not get paid for what they do. They do this completely out of the kindness of their hearts. If your dog is 100 pounds (Mary), well yea its going to be hard to get them in their cage. You can't be gentle and expect them to listen. I read these after i went and i didn't experience anything like this. You have to think outside your own point of view.

I went to Woodstock with my 3 month old Chihuahua/Jack Russel Mix puppy. The first set of shots and dewormer and everything went real well and they were real nice. The next time that I went was a couple of weeks ago when he was due for his yearly shots and rabies shots-well, the Vet did well with it...but come to find out my puppy has developed a lump where the injection site is and I seen that on the internet that some Vets can give too much to a puppy for a rabies shot and it could be fatal and that the lump could be cancer or a tumor of some kind..I don't want to lose my puppy he's my first dog and I will be so lost without him. They better not be at fault for this because they will be getting sued!!!!

This is more of a question than review. I have recently adopted a 3 year old male shih tzu. So far he's ok but for the last few days,he's been acting strange with my son. They told me to have him neutered/spayed. What's the difference between the two?

Woodstock is extremely hard to reach by phone. They require you to leave your pet alone in a cage all day with cages filled with barking dogs. They are often rude. The cost is cheaper than regular vets but not as cheap as other spay/neuter clinics. Bourbon County Humane Society is a lot cheaper for spaying and neutering cats and especially dogs. (It serves all counties, not just Bourbon) It is easy to reach, quick appointments, people are nice. You get what you get at Woodstock only it's cheaper, easier, friendlier, quicker. Woodstock vaccinations are, I think, still pretty cheap. It's not possible to check right now because their web site has no info on it. (So you always have to call for info and most times there's no answer.) For spay/neuter check out Humane Societies in Lex and surrounding area.

Woodstock Spay & Neuter Clinic is a LOW COST spay neuter clinic. If you want the BEST care for your pet and a staff attending to YOUR needs, please go to a full cost, full care clinic, and stop trashing Woodstock for being exactly what it needs to be. Woodstock delivers spaying and neutering, plus vaccinations and HW checks for those who could not otherwise afford it. Their expertise is delivering BASIC care to animals at extremely low cost to the owner. I have used them for rescued animals and will continue to use them when low cost is the main objective. When I want personal assistance, lovely exam rooms, and the best care for my animals, I can go to one of the many fine vets in the area that have plenty of well paid staff trained to provide customer service as well as excellent animal care, up to date lab equipment to deal with extensive diagnostics and care, radiology equipment on site, ultrasound equipment, dental equipmant, the very best in anesthesia machines and anesthetic gas, room for boarding, etc. If you want minimal cost, please don't expect maximum care. Woodstock provides a much needed service to the animals that would otherwise go uncared for. I applaud the people who accept low pay and cramped conditions to care for the needy among us, both animal and owner. Thanks for all that you do!

I've been going to Woodstock for many years now. I love animals & have had several dogs and cats spayed/neutered/given their shots at Woodstock. I will continue to use them. I read all the reviews and have a couple of things to add---

**POSITIVE**
--PRICE, PRICE, PRICE-- The low costs allow people who are unable to afford the high cost of vet services to be responsible pet owners.
--THE VETS DO A GOOD JOB; NEVER HAD AN ISSUE W/ INFECTION OR ILLNESS IN A PET AFTER SURGERY.

**NEGATIVE**
--The receptionist lady really isn't very pleasant in the morning; maybe she's just not a morning person (I don't know). She is efficiant and seems to be nice to the animals though.
--After a spay or neuder my pets seem to have quite a bit of residual anesthesia still on board. It takes quite a few hours after pick up for your pet to become normal again.

Neither of these negatives outweigh the good that they do at Woodstock. I've always been pleased:)

I'll be honest, after reading that horrible 2nd review, I was very skeptical about sending my 3 1/2 month old puppy to Woodstock for her last set of shots and to be spayed. That review couldnt be further from the truth. The receptionist was very nice and caring. They answered all my questions even though they were busy. When I picked her up she seemed great. It's been 2 days now and she is doing wonderfully, just like her old self. I couldnt be more happy with the job they did and it was so affordable. Thanks Woodstock for taking care of my baby Casey

11 Years of friendly, caring, economical service has allowed me to provide my dogs their shots and protect them from heartworm. THANK YOU, WOODSTOCK!! You help us, who would otherwise NOT be able to afford pets, to responsibly care for them. Lexington thanks you for your service and your heart!

Please think twice before trying to save a few bucks on your pet's spay or neuter! It's not worth the worry of how your pet will be treated before their surgery. My experience at Woodstock Spay and Neuter Clinic was HORRIBLE from start to finish!!!I was not greeted by the receptionist at all when I showed up for my dog's neuter appointment. She was very short and snippy and only asked "Do you have an appointment!?" She took my dog back to weigh him while I started filling out paperwork. Then, she yelled out, "Ugh! Isn't he crate trained?!!!" She became angry when my dog didn't want to go into the crate. He he nearly 100 lbs, so it is difficult to make him do something when he is scared. I went in the holding room to try to help. She was being very rough with him and then tied a thin rope around his neck and proceeded to try to lift him into the crate by his neck! I had to step in to stop this method. After trying to get my dog into the crate for about 10 minutes, I offered to just bring him back to the clinic when the vet was ready for him, or sit with him until his surgery. She hatefully responded, "He won't even be here until 9:45 or 10:00!"I also noticed a small dog in a crate with his muzzle completely taped shut. I assume his barking had become annoying to the receptionist, so this was her solution. This was much different than just a "muzzle." The poor dog could not open its mouth, even a little. I couldn't believe how dangerous this was! The dog could have choked and died if it had happen to vomit while waiting for surgery. Finally, a couple came in to have their cat spayed. I was still in the other room, but heard the entire conversation that took place. The same receptionist was extremely rude to them as well about their situation.I immediately made the decision to take my dog home from the clinic and made an appointment to have him neutered at my regular vet's office. It will be more expensive than Woodstock, but well worth it! I will have peace of mind knowing that my dog is being taken care of and not mistreated.I would not recommend Woodstock Spay and Neuter Clinic to anyone! Their prices are cheaper, but at what cost to your beloved pet? I urge you to take your pet somewhere that has dedicated, nurturing employees who truly CARE about animals.

All I want to say is that Woodstock is a great program. The vets working on your animal??s voluntary their time there. I have a problem with someone getting on here trashing what Woodstock is doing. The price vets charges are ridiculous it??s money in their pocket. Before I found Woodstock I went to a local vet clinic for my 8lb Yorkie??s shots. Every time I was there it was never under $80.00 most of the time it was more. It was not a glamorous vet office just an everyday vet that has been here for many, many years. The cost was killing me. I took my dog because she did not have a good home. She was not being feed everyday and it was sad so I gave her a home. After paying the vet bills I started to rethink my decision and my aunt who has a farm and many animals said give her the shots yourself and just take her in for her Rabies. I went to a feed store and purchased her shot medicine it was not over $10.00 can you believe it but I was paying at least $80.00 a visit. So when it was time for her Rabies shot again I found Woodstock. I pay 20.00 get all her shots and I am on my way. So don??t trash a place that is about the service to the community and not the wad in the pocket!

Let's see, my first experience with them was while in high school. My parents had two of our dogs and our two cats neutered there. Since then, I believe they have had two more dogs neutered there.

Now that I am out on my own, I have taken in a few animals in need. I had two of my dogs and my cat spayed there.

None of us ever had a bad experience. Every pet we have ever taken to Woodstock recovered quickly without any infection or swelling.

Woodstock Spay & Neuter Clinic is a very viable solution for the responsible pet owner, living on a tight budget. Not only can you help combat pet overpopulation, but you can get vaccinations at a fraction of the usual cost.

Be responsible; Spay or Neuter your pets!

I can't believe what my veterinary clinic wants to charge us to spay our two puppies. I originally wanted to breed them and then I started looking all the problems associated with breeding. Puppies not getting good homes; the cost of keeping them; etc. etc. Then someone told me about Woodstock and I can't believe my eyes. How much does it cost to have two 8-10 lb 6 month old puppies spayed and given Rabies shots. KD

I have 3 cats and 1 dog all the cats are strays and our dog was bought.I do not know if the person who is not revealing the name and works at the Drs. office is trying to scare people into going to a private vet or what their purpose of posting a review like that.First there is a doctor of veterinary medicine who performs the surgeries and he gives all the shots. The only difference is he doesn't make you take a second mortgage to have your pet spayed or neutered.I have been to both, the 2nd cat had worms and I freaked out ran to the vet and paid 350.00 for the visit and worm meds!!!! Only to find out later I could have gotten it done there probably for 25-50 dollars.I got lucky with my last stray cat and found out through them she is a seal point Himalayan and they spayed her and the other 2 cats I cannot afford 700.00 to have my cats I adopt fixed. So I would not be able to save them unless we had a million kittens running around and when they go into that heat mood they meow non stopand pee everywhere. I do thank god and Woodstock for their services ,they take extremely good care of your pets . Their front office is just not as fancy as the in town vet.Other than that I do not know why anonymous is even posting unless they need patients for the office they work for, If you are reading this and are afraid to take your pet here do not be afraid. All 4 pets had their surgeries here and never had swelling or infection. In fact my miss puff was the last to have it dine and as I remember it from last summer she was up and going the next day,we did have to limit her activity until she got well. They are wonderful people and professionals and I thank them from the bottom of my heart my twin daughters thank them as well. I greatly disagree with the opinions of "Anonymous". It's telling that this person seems never to have used the clinic and refrains from using any identity, even a first name. Hmmmmm.Quite true, a veterinary clinic probably does things a little differently and your checkbook will reflect that. I am recently retired and have 3 dogs and 2 cats that either were adopted or were strays and their routine medical care could be very expensive. I just thank everyone associated with Woodstock that they can offer annual vaccinations at only $10 each and flea and worm medicine at vastly discounted rates from what area veterinarians charge.Over the years I've had 8 pets spayed or neutered at Woodstock and have never had any post-surgery problems.Woodstock serves a much needed purpose -- many pet owners such as myself would have to forego routine care otherwise.

I work at a veterinarians office in Lexington and I have first hand experience with the different methods that are used in spaying and neutering animals. The way the surgeries are performed at our office is much easier on your pets. Anesthesia is used rather than a injectable, therefore the pet is completely sedated and recovers much quicker. Also, an IV and Catheter is set up and fluids are used during and after the surgery, making the surgery and recovery much smoother for your pet, and your pet is sent home with pain medications and an antibiotic if needed.I completely understand that Woodstock is much cheaper and easier on your wallet, but the quality of the surgery is greatly increased when you take your pet to a veterinarians office rather than a spay/neuter clinic. I see first hand the amount of money that clients have to spend on office visits to our doctor due to taking their pet to a spay/neuter clinic or Spays the Way, through the Humane Society. It seems that you end up spending more money in the long run to have you pet treated with us due to your pet being sick afterwards, whether it be getting kennel cough or swelling from the surgery. I just feel that clients should be completely educated before making a decision as to where they are going to have their pets procedure done, and the other reviews on this page are not a completely accurate representation of Woodstock and the experience that owners and their pets receive.

Woodstock is not just a spay and neuter clinic, they also do pet adoptions. They are the only non euthanizing pet "shelter" in Lexington. They handle cats, dogs and sometimes other pets like rabbits. In addition to spaying and neuteringin house they also have a mobile spay and neuter clinic , you may call to set up a date for the mobile clinic to be in your area. They are often at petsmart on weekends with pets available for adoption. Woodstock operates only on donations and volunteer help. One of dogs and one of our cats came from woodstock and have been terrific pets so far.

Although they're not a full service veterinarian clinic, the Woodstock Spay/Neuter Clinic provides basic services at reduced prices. There's no need to go to a high-priced vet's office to have your cat or dog spayed or neutered. It only cost $59 to have our kitten spayed and she was returned to us that afternoon. They did a great job and I can't say enough good things about them.
