Had me fooled
by Suzanne P.
For the last 20 years I have taken my pets to this clinic for various types of treatment and I have been so impressed with the follow-up phone calls asking how my "baby" was doing. I thought how compassionate these people are towards the owners as well as the animals. Well, I now know that the term they use"baby" just means future financial income. I took my 17 yr old dog in last week to have him put down. He was totally deaf, half blind, terrible hip arthritus and in the final stages of kidney failure. He was a loyal, faithful member of my family who protected and gave us (me & my 2 daughters) unconditional love for 17 yrs. I thought I was taken him to someone who cared about him. They were very busy that day and didn't take the time to sedate the dog before euthanasing him. The vein collapsed during the process and the dog suffered a terrible painful death in front of our eyes.It took 3 people to hold him down while he yelped. That seen will haunt us for a long time. This could have been avoided if they would have taken the time to do it properly. I went back a couple of days later to pick up his ashes and I asked the vet what happened. She confirmed it. I never got that 1st phone call explaining what had happened or even an apology. This place is phoney and all they care about is their future potential income. I will tell this story to every pet owner I know as well as shop for another vet.. Please if your ever in this predicament have the vet sedate your pet 1st!!!!

Changing for the worse...
by Brittany G.
A once caring and compassionate place for pets and their owners has turned into a nickel and dime hustle that reflects "subsidized healthcare" for animals. Your relationship with your vet should be a joint vested interest in providing care for your animals. Today, Dr. Mary Jane and the staff of Shively Animal Clinic lost my respect; not only as veterinarians--for undermining my intelligence to care for my animal, but as an amiable establishment for their rude dissension. Denied an over the counter dressing for my dog, and scolded about the seriousness of applying it, I was pressured to bring my furry friend in (after hours) to be examined. After I refused, explaining it was nothing seriousa cut that needed looking after; most likely a scrape from a sticker bush on our property...I was denied a product that I could purchase myself online. We dont want to be responsible if the dressing isnt put on correctly. Uh, ok, let me get this straight... You wont sell me a glorified ace bandage, but you will sell me a product that has an MSDS on file with the federal government; i.e. Frontline and HeartGaurd. After their neglect of customer service (2 personnel and one supervisor later) and over-inflating the seriousness of dressing my dogs wound myself, my husband and I have made the decision to remove our pets from their care and build a new relationship with a more helpful practice that advocates an owners proactive role in the health of their pets.

OUTSTANDING
by Kelly S.
I have 5 cats, I now take all of them to Shively Animal Clinic. I was going to another vet up until they misdiagnosed his problem. That vet wanted to take his eye out! I took him to Shively at which time they diagnosed him and did surgery on his eye to fix it. He has his eye! The great part about is due to the cost of the surgery I was not able to pay for it all at once. They allowed me to make payment arrangements, which was awesome. There prices are reasonable however the wait it long. Go early and plan on staying awhile! I don't mind considering the care that they provide is OUTSTANDING!

I love this place! But expect to wait.
by Sara C.
I love this place. If you have been going to shivley for a while you understand that there will be a wait. I adopted a dog from the Humane Society and he could not get over kennel cough. I went to another vet and $500 later my dog was still hacking. So my brother-in-law recommend me to go to Shively. I took my dog out there and thought OH MY GOSH I am going to have to wait forever. Yes, I waited but my dog was cured with $10 worth of medicine. I have been taking me dogs to Shively for years and I would reccomend it to all of my friends with a warning that you will have a wait. Great Service and Great Prices!

Shivelys Prices are not worth the wait and overall bad service
by Becky b.
I had heard great things about Shively through a friend of mine. Her dog had the same surgery that my dog was about to get except my dog had ACL tares in both her hind legs. I received two other opinions from reputable vets (who were also very expensive) so I knew going into the visit what was wrong with my dog. My 2 1/2- 3 hour wait was something I expected going into the initial visit. Sarah was caring and answered all my questions. I made an appointment for x-ray's the following day. That night I called to get their hours of operation and talked to a lady on the phone. I also asked her if I could at some point talk to the surgeon that was preforming the operation. I'm not sure if she spoke to Sarah that night but she got back on the phone and said that I should go back to the specific vet that I previously visited (and that I told Sarah about) if I wanted to see the surgeon. I was upset about the comment and figured if I was about to spend a little less than $2,000, I should be able to speak to the surgeon. The next morning I called to cancel my appointment for x-rays and spoke to a lady on the phone. She asked me why I was cancelling my appointment and I told her that I requested to see the surgeon and that it wasn't possible. She said that the statement was not true and put me on hold. She picked up the phone and said in a confused manor "well, she said she can't take your call." I hate to put blame on the vet I got but I thought they handled the situation poorly. It made me feel like they didn't care and that they would be happy if I went somewhere else. Needless to say I did and my dog is doing great. I think Shivelys prices are appealing but not worth the 2 1/2- 3 hour wait and bad service. Although I will never go back I believe that it's probably a good place for annual shots and other routine visits but I would definitely caution someone to have large operations done there.

The BEST in Louisville
by Jessica W.
If you need an outstanding ear crop Dr. David is the vet to see!!! I recommend this vet to everyone I know. Dr. David, Dr. Joe and Dr. MaryJane are my personal favorites and they really care about the well being of your pet. My Great Dane was seen here for an emergency case of bloat and had emergency surgery. My pet was not only treated as one of their own but the cost of the surgery was HUNDREDS less than anyone else would have charged. Waiting 2-3 hours to be seen is just a small price to pay for the best medical care in the area. To respond to some of the other posts on here- Dr. MaryJane refrains from updating the technology in the office to keep from charging her clients more for the care that they receive. If they were all about the money they wouldn't have allowed me to pay payments and charge medications to my account. If you are a regular client they are very flexible and I know many clients really appreciate this. Also, they do take checks as well as cash.

The Best Vet Clinic I Ever Encountered
by Edward K.
I have had my pets spayed, immunized, general checkups and allergies.
They were extremely inexpensive. Unlike the saying that "you get what you pay for", the Shively Animal Hospital provides great quality care.
Because of this, the waiting room is huge and packed. The good news: if you are a client, you can go in without your pet, let them know that your pet is "skittish" or "nervous" and they will put you in the queue and call you and tell you to bring your pet. The waiting time is cut to mere minutes. They are very compassionate.
Not only that, their medication cost is the cheapest, beating the websites for Frontline and Advantrix by 50%. A package of 3 Frontline applications costs $37.50. The cheapest price I ever found on the web is 26$ plus shipping. One time my cat needed antihistamines; they prescribed 30 pills that had to be broken into 1/3 of a pill each. And Shively cut the pills for me!!! The cost: $9.00 dollars.
I highly recommend Shively. It is run by the Fuch's family; many of his sons and daughters are vets or veterinary assistants. They take cash only, though. No checks or credit cards. But that is a small price to pay for phenomenal service. They also call you 2 days after your pet has been seen to ask if "all is well."
Great place!

You Get My 5 Stars
by Terri S.
Shively Animal is a 2-3rd generational family owned care facility whose Dr.s are some of the top in the city. We have used them after trying others - I would rather wait 2 hours for them. My pets love the vet techs and all the tech are very caring with them. The care is awesome, the prices don't rob you and I've never heard anything but respectful communication between Dr. and Techs including the front desk. My pets will always go to Shively. Sometimes doing things the old way(no computers)is not as bad as people think. It is one way they are able to keep cost down. Thank you Dr. Joyce for being so wonderful!

Shivley gives great service but some of the doctors are absoulutley horribl
by J T.
I used to work at Shively animal clinic and it was great to see animals getting the care they needed when they accutuallty recieved it. Unfortunetly it was usually a non stop unorgainized mess. They don't have computers which could be very beneficial after looking for a chart for a day because of a mis-file. They do everything old school to cut costs not to provide the most up to date care. They are open 365 days a year and all the doctors are dedicated to their jobs but regarding customer service they suck. All of the staff is rude and hateful because their boss Dr. Mary Jane Fuchs is hateful to them. She calls clients and staff things like stupid and much worst. That was is why I don't work there anymore. The atmosphere is too negative and when u have a sick pet u need caring people there not overworked zombies who have little experience and often make mistakes.

Great doc's-terrible service
by leslie c.
First and foremost, the doctors and the care at this facility are the best to be had in Louisville, however this office is completely stuck in the dark ages. Refusing to make appointments creates a chaotic atmosphere in a waiting room full of irritable clients. Wait times have often reached 3 hours or more just to have your pet seen. The lack of computers in this workplace significantly slows down the process of admitting, seeing, and charging patients, and i've noticed on more than one occassion that my handwritten record has been inaccurate...however, the prices and the dr's are so good I'll probably keep going back in emergencies. I have a normal vet for everyday occurrances, because some days the wait just isnt worth it.

One vet I see
by Letha C.
I've tried other vets and find that the best care comes from the experience of the Shively Animal Clinic doctors. The wait is worth it. The cost is very economical because they do everything on volume. They are just phenomenal! They actually love animals; it's not just a job. Two generations of my family have been going to this place and I've recommended it to all who ask.

NOT GOOD MORAL'S OR PET CARE
by MELISSA Y.
They don't care about your pet or pet care.. They have no morals and they care about the money before anything else.. I will never go there again and never never recommend them to anyone.. Also i believe to save their own butt's they like to blame the owner of the pet's when something tragic happens and not man up for what they did.. Very bad business practices...

Love These Vets
by Rhonda M.
I lived in Louisville for 10 years. I only trust my pets with the wonderful doctors at Shively Animal Clinic. When I moved to Lebanon, Ky., I still would take that 60-70 mile drive just to take my pets to them. If they were people doctors, I'd only take my kids to them. Never have I seen such true love of animals from any other place. Every doctor there, as well as every member of the staff, keeps me in awe.

WONDERFUL
by suzanne s.
I have alot of animals, and they all go to shively. I have never had bad treatment by anyone. I am more fond of Dr. Joyce as she saved my long haired doxys life. They have sat in the floor with me when I had to put a dog down, and were very patient with my mother when her dog was extremely ill. I recommend them to everyone. They give you every option, and support your decision. I can't say enough good about them.

Shively Animal the Best
by Judy S.
Been going there for years, so has my family. Have had cats and dogs both treated on a regular basis and emergency basis. Best care in town, allows you to call in at night to check on your "baby" - kind, caring, intelligent - best "animal pediatric" care going.

Not very impressed
by Ashton W.
When I first moved to Louisville, I looked up a bunch of different vets and finally settled on Shively because of all the praise it got. When I finally took my dogs and cat I was happily surprised at the low cost. A few months later I acquired a Boxer puppy that I was planning to show. I took her to Shively to get her ears cropped. The surgery when fine, but the aftercare was terrible. During the two weeks my Boxer had the E-Collar and post-surgery bandages on, she managed to shake loose the frame that was holding her ears up. I called Shively to make sure that was normal and the answer I got was a rude and unfeeling "Yes, it's fine."After the post-surgery bandages came off, my Boxer still had to wear a frame to train the ears to stand. I took her back once a week for a reframe and not once did I see the vet, I did not get any information about the progress and the worst part was the fact that they shoved my 4 month old puppy into a kennel and forgot about her for 2 hours while I was waiting. So, not only was my day wasted, but my poor puppy was shoved to the back and forgotten about. So, in closing, Shively may be cheap, but there is no communication whatsoever, they aren't very friendly, and they don't take appointments (which means you'll be waiting to see a vet for at least 1.5 hours.)Shively, I'm not very impressed.

Great Vets
by Kyle W.
We deal with alot of veterinarians in town since we own a commercial kennel. When ever we have a customer with a serious problem we send them to shively animal. They truelly are a loving and caring group of people who care about the animals and the customer. They have always helped every customer we have sent and many times find the problems that others have missed. Tops in our eyes.

Finally an Animal Clinic that Doesn't cost an Arm and a Leg!

I have had two pets we have taken into Shively, a cat and a dog. We took the cat in yesterday to get his yearly shots and it only cost us $19. They are always very professional and very kind to me and my cat. The only down-side is that every time I have been I have had to wait for at least an hour. But they give you the option of leaving and if you come back after they have called you in, you are at the front of the list. For our dog we went in and didn't even have the dog with us and came back two hours later and got in right away.
PROS: Experienced Staff, Low Cost
CONS: Long Wait Time

Life savers
by Chris F.
About 10 years ago,my dog Yogi had contracted parvo and the great folks at Shively said he had to go into the hospital immediately & to not worry about the cost, we would work it out.
Over the next few days they called me several times a day with updates and asked me to come visit him and bring some familiar things including his regular food because they were worried about him being away from me.
They gave us a private room where Yogi and I visited for a while and he returned to the hospital.
Yogi had a dramatic improvement after that and he was cured from this life threatening disease and came home within a couple more days.
We worked out the bill over time and they were very helpful and accomodating.
They also took great care of him when his leg was crushed by a car a couple years later. He got completely back to normal.
He is still alive and a very happy pup.
They have been great with my best friend. There is not another vet I would ever take my pets to.

This place saved the life of our little puppy! He was only 6mos when he got a virus and had been vomiting and had diarreah and was not able to keep anything down. A friend told us to take him to Shively Animal Clinic and thank God we did because he would not have lived through the night. They immediately gave him fluids but the vomiting continued and he had to have surgery because his intestine had collapsed from dehydration. He remained in the hospital for a week in intensive care. I was very impressed with the care he received from all the staff and the bill was not near as much as I had expected. I Highly recommend this place and all the wonderful careing staff of Shively Animal Clinic.
PROS: Best and most reasonable priced place in town!

I had to take my pet here once, and when I did, I really liked the treatment. The staff was very understanding, and since it was an emergency, they took me right back. The Vet was very good to making me and family feel better. Our dog was hit by a car, and they did everything. Wonderful people there. Very busy at times when i have driven by, but in emergencys, you are seen very fast! Great Service
