Ratings_icons Great Place Remember When....

Carolyn S.

We ate here for two reasons, I am originally from Elliott County Ky, but now live in Wisconsin, also my parents live near Morehead, Ky. They had eaten at the Smokey Valley Truck Stop prior to us seeing in D,D and D on Foodnetwork. We were visiting my parents on vacation and thought it was a great place, very welcoming, open people. The food was great, and yes it is a family owned, slightly dated but you are in an area that doesn't follow the rules of change, we happen to like the place, food, and people very much. And yes plan to go back each and every time we are able to visit my parents.I love to remember how life used to be before McD's and all the other fast food joints and all the yuppie bs came into play in our society. Keep it just the way it is I LOVE IT!!!!!! Thanks for making us feel at home and being true to who you are!!!!!!

Ratings_icons RUN WHILE YOU HAVE YOUR LUNGS

Jessica M.

This place is so bad. We came in from MSU. Heard it was a great place. No its for nothing but the Greek people who like to be loud, You can have a decent meal with out hear the yelling and screaming and very loud laughing. The service was so slow and never again will I got. They allow smoke and it is so nasty to be a non smoker and when you eat your fries you taste the smoke from the table two over. Health Dept needs to be called.

Ratings_icons Smokey Valley Truck Stop is The BEST I ever ate

Kathy S.

I was in the area on business, and my co-worker suggested we eat at "a truck stop" in the area rather than a chain. I was reluctant at first, I visualized a 'truck stop' with male truckers, not an appropriate place for 2 middle aged females on business. When we entered, we were greeted immediately by the male waiter, directed to a booth, he had menu's in hand. We ask about the days special, Turkey and Dressing, he said it was great, my co-worker ask about the pie, he said if we wanted some he would go ahead and put in our order as it usually sales out fast during lunch time. I travel on business and have never had a better experience in any restaurant, never been treated any better. The food was excellent, the service was excellent, the staff were courteous and proper, the place was clean. It was an old building, but had an atmosphere of Good Eating. I am sure there were locals in there, but who knew who they were, everyone was treated the same....2 thumbs up....I hope I have business in the area soon, I definately will be back.

Ratings_icons Smokey Valley Truck Stop is so BAD

The food and service was so bad, I got up and walked out without even paying. You should not need to know anything besides that. This place should be closed by the health dept.

Ratings_icons Smokey Valley Truck Stop is A Big Disappointment!

Cathy S.

It was an hour and half to drive there. An hour and 15 minutes to get our food while locals were served first. Just a bad dinner for our Sunday and very disappointing. The food was a horrible disappointment as most of it was frozen or canned.

Ratings_icons Smokey Valley Truck - Good Job

Jody U.

After reading some reviews, I was very nervous about going here. I was with a group of three couples, one who is interracial. Pleasantly, we were treated very well by everyone. Our waitress was great, we were served timely, the food was good, it was very reasonably priced, and I had the best coconut cream pie I have probably ever had in my life. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to others. Two thumbs up!

Ratings_icons Unless your a local - forget it

fred m.

My wife & I read all the reviews prior to going for lunch. I had doubts about the negative feedback until I experienced it myself. There wasn't anything I'd say met our expectations which were based on both the TV review on Dinners, Drive In's & Dives. We ordered the daily special anticipating that tour order would arrive within a reasonable time. Wrong! Our male waiter was prompt waiting on us but we could sense frustration on his part. The only other waiter/waitress was a "granny" type who mad a point to wait immediately on the locals. Not only did she know their drink preferences but also had the menu"s in hand before they even took their seats. Watching all of this is an experience. Every local entering not only had exceptional service but were actually spoken to by "Granny". Waiting 45 min for our "special of the day" to arrive, we found the meal to be poor at best. The "special" was cold, the much praised biskets and order was cold. There wasn't much flavor to any of the vegies and all in all our experience was a major disappointment. When checking out, "Granny" didn't even have the courtesy to say thanks or thank you for visiting us. Take our advice, this place isn't worth the gas to get there unless your a local and live in Olive Hill.

Ratings_icons Get a Grip

Yvonne H.

This is a hometown family owned truck stop! Not a five star restaurant! The staff are friendly and they still smoke indoors. However, it has the perfect atmosphere, fantastic food and out of this world pie. My husband and I drove 2 hours to eat here after seeing it on TV. I find it hard to understand why people are expecting the Ritz when it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. This is what gives it character. I personally am glad they are not putting on heirs after being on TV. Get a grip and enjoy reality for a change. I plan to eat here every time I'm traveling east on 64. I wish I lived closer

Ratings_icons Nothing to write home about- Dissapointed

Review R.

Hearing about the restaurant, we decided to try it. The hype from the Food Network show had folks talking. We went out of our way to drive and visit. There was no welcome when you walked in the door and no clean tables. Our waitress acted like she could care less if we ate at the restaurant or not. When cleaning the table she made sure we knew they were closing at 9 PM, even though the time was shortly after 8 PM. She had absolutely no personality or work ethic to her. At any rate- our food took a long time to arrive. The chicken was cooked to the point of almost being burnt, the turnip greens were pure vinegar... and the fish not done enough. The mashed potatoes were good- not great- but good. The green beans were delicious. The Roast Beef is divine. We ordered corn bread, but received corn muffins that were over-cooked and had no flavor. When it came time for desert- dissapointed to find they had no desert to sell. That is the key selling point for folks travel. Too bad they are not capitalizing on the potential of this restaurant from the exposure. If they improved service and attention to detail with the food, people would return. & To think your famous for your desert, but don't have any to sell- that's not a way to run a business. Will not re-visit. It was nothing to write home about. High School Cafeteria Food with Lackluster Service.

I went way out of my way to eat here on the way to Branson ,Mo.. I met Jaunita and she was the nicest person I have ever met. The food really meats the grade and the coconut cream pie is just out of this world. The wait staff was very attentive.
Do not be in a hurry. When it is your time things will roll real fast.

Saw the restaurant featured on the TV show so we were curious to try for ourselves. My husband and I, and two of our out-of-state relatives went there on a Friday afternoon around 2 PM. The sign said to seat yourself and within minutes a friendly waitress brought menus and took our drink orders. We all ordered hamburgers and all agreed they were about the best we have ever eaten anywhere. The slices of the famous coconut meringue pie were so large our eyes almost popped out of our heads when the waitress brought them to the table. It was also the best we had ever eaten. I would recommend this restaurant and hope to get to go back again. The decor is not all that great, but remember it is a truck stop. I have paid much higher prices for food that could not begin to touch theirs. Most restaurants now seem to bring a sample size dessert and charge a fortune for it. At Smokey Valley they are more than generous with the pie and ours was still warm from the oven. We were all glad we chose to eat there!!!!

Ratings_icons Good Food, Bad Service

Lisa R.

I'm from a town not far from Olive Hill, so after I caught Smokey Valley on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I decided to stop by the next time I was in the area. We (my boyfriend, myself and our 2 kids) decided to have dinner there this past Saturday evening. We arrived about 6pm and it didn't take long to get a seat (just waited for them to clean a table). But that's where the experience went down hill. We sat there for 45 minutes waiting on a menu! The waitresses would wait on just about everyone but us. There was a 2 men sitting at the next table that eventually left because no one ever came to wait on them. They did have menus, which they got from a couple sitting beside them, but the waitresses never acknowledged them. My youngest child is 19 months old and we were having a hard time keeping him entertained while we waited. He definitely made it impossible for anyone to forget we were sitting there, except for the waitresses, it seemed. There were people that came in after us that were waited on before us! We were about to leave when the waitress came to take our order. It didn't take long for the food. When we finally received our order, my boyfriend's order was wrong. He had ordered the hamburger steak and she brought him country ham. The waitress took it back to the kitchen and then came back out and told us it was right and that is what they called ham steak. We then had to explain that he had ordered HAMBURGER steak (by the way, "Ham Steak" is not even on the menu). So he had to wait even longer to get his dinner. We ordered biscuits with our dinner and you get one each. My daughter didn't even get one with her dinner. Also, we didn't get our drinks until about a minute before our food was brought out, which was well over an hour after we arrived. The food was good, but it is definitely not worth the wait. I would recommend this place only if you have plenty of time to kill, don't mind a smoke filled environment and want country cooking. One more thing....I did not get the impression that the people are unpatriotic or prejudiced. I just think that they need to be more organized and have an area of tables for each waitress. Also, some of the waitresses have no business waiting on tables. Just my 2 cents! :)

Ratings_icons Unpatriotic and prejudiced?

Deloris D.

I am originally from Olive Hill, where the Smokey Valley Truckstop is located, I know the owners very well. They are anything but unpatriotic and prejudiced. I have had to wait longer times than this before being served, but it is not due to prejudice. These owners have taken pride in their restaurant, and go out of their way to make customers feel welcomed, no matter what race! I am sorry this left the kind of impression on you, because you are very wrong! This is a wonderful place to come and dine, for any race!

Ratings_icons wonderful food, wonderful memories.................

andrea d.

my aunts, hazel garvin and cora bocook, took us there on our first visit to olive hill. i had the cucumber salad for the first time in my life and now i get it every visit. the waitresses are very hospitable and the other guests are so friendly. it's like they have known you all your life. the portions are normally more than we can eat so we are always taking home a doggie bag. we love the down home atmosphere and the laid back attitude of the whole experience. we are from the detroit area and it's nice to be able to visit someplace where life isn't so fast paced. and did i mention the corn bread and the pinto beans? can't wait to visit again. :)

Ratings_icons Coconut Cream Pie

Jackie W.

I had seen the truck stop and the talk of their coconut cream pie on WSAZ and found out they had been on Foodnetwork. I was impressed with the heighth of the pie! I was discussing this with a co-worker when we were coming back from Mt. Sterling. She missed the exit so we didn't get pie that day. The next week was my birthday and she sent her husband there to buy me a pie. We live in South Shore! I was very excited about getting this pie. It was still warm when he brought it to our work and we all enjoyed the pie!

Ratings_icons Good Old Fashioned Cookin

Smokey Valley Truck Stop is a great place to eat anytime of the day. If it is old-time and just plain good food that you are looking for, this is the right place. The food is terrific, the cooks and waitors/waitresses are very polite, and the prices are good. I love to eat a country meal like my grandmother used to make, and this place tastes just like her cookin. If you plan on going, make sure you have time enough, the place is usually very crowded (even though the city of Olive Hill has a population of under 1,900 people) and service is sometimes slow. However, when there are so many people at a restaurant in a town so small, you know the food has to be good. This place is a must try for all people looking for a good old fashioned American meal.

Ratings_icons SHOCKED...THE OWNERS ARE UNPATRIOTIC AND PREJUDICE!!

Anonymous

If you don't mind the fact the owner's refuse to wave the American flag or refuse to serve people not of their race, well then this is your spot. I personally would never do business with any establishment that will not support those that are serving our country so they can continue to make a buck. A retired Marine and his family drove to the truck stop for lunch after seeing them on Diners, Drive-Ins and Divers. They were never served and ignored by the waitress. The waitress asked if they had been waited on after about 25 minutes then proceeded to have a seat with other staff members to smoke a cigarette and laugh it up. The couple waiting to be served have 3 small children they adopted from other countries. This is not the first time I have heard of people not of their race being ignored to the point of having to leave.

Ratings_icons Good People - Good Food - Good Day!

Ah, this is real America! An honest-to-goodness hometown diner. Nothing fancy, just good people, good food, good portions, and good prices - all in a rustic Americana truckstop/diner setting. My wife and I first heard about this place on TV Food Networks show "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. At first, we couldn't find the place - but finally located it at exit #156, just off I-64. We went there on a Thursday for lunch and enjoyed the turkey and dressing dinner - Yum! No one was in a rush - but, all were friendly and helpful. It's not well-advertised, or well-marked, but it's certainly worth the drive.

Ratings_icons Good food, bad service

The food here is good, with large portions and good prices. However, the wait staff was not very friendly. We walked in and were not sure if we should seat ourselves as there were no signs. We stood there for about 5 minutes(they were not busy at all) while the employees either stared at us or just ignored us. I finally caught a waiter and he told us to go ahead and have a seat. We then waited about 10 minutes for someone to give us menus and another 10 minutes for a drink order. We noticed that the "regulars" in the place seem to get far better service. We probably will not return to this restaurant!

Hello,

I watched the program and saw your restrautant on TV and would love to come there...only I have no idea where you are located. Can you give me directions. All I basically know is to come down I-75. So, you will have to tell me where your turn-off is to get to your place. I never seen so much good looking food in all my life! It sure brings back some good memories of some good down-home cookin' that I grew up on. My Mom is gone now...and I sure don't know how to cook like she did and you make it look so easy. I have GOT to come see you someday. Can you please tell me directions from Cincinnati? Thank You!

This is a truck stop, the inside is well kept. Seating can sometimes be a problem. But if you have to stand and wait, do it because you will find the food worth the wait. The prices are not bad either. The staff are always friendly. Get a chance go visit them.
