Reviews for Critter Co

Ratings_icons From a former employee:

katie k.

I worked at Critter Company for quite some time. I put in 30 hours a week and I absolutely loved my job. I took good care the animals in the store while helping customers daily. I was very busy constantly; people do not realize what it takes to keep an entire store of a hundred animals clean and supplied during the day. A pet store has to constantly be cleaned due to the fact the animals eat, drink, and make messes throughout the day and night. It is a full-time job. The staff is wonderful and put in extra effort to make sure the employees are informed of what they are handling (although it takes a while to learn about so many animals and supplies.) I truly enjoyed working at Critter Company and it makes me angry when people say the company does not care for the animals. The family who owns the store and the employees they hire all do their best to take care of, love, and provide good families for every single pet.

Ratings_icons Critter Co is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ould definitely have to say that I personally love going to Critter Co. You might have to browse around for a person to help you sometimes, but they're always busy. I've had all my questions answered by the employees and I'm very well satisfied with how they run their business. Believe me, I understand what it means to try to get everything done in one day and still feel like you've accomplished nothing. As long as you do the very best you can, then that's all that really mattes. I have 4 kids and I babysit 3-4 others. I try to get everything done in one day so I can relax the next, but it never goes the way I plan. lol. We have a turtle that a friend of ours bought from their and he's over 2 yrs old now. My girls named him "Underspikey." My 7yr old wanted to name him Underdog, but he's a turtle :); So we mixed the names and came up with "Underspikey." He has actually gotten bigger as well. So I'd definitely have to say that Critter Co. is the best!!!!

Ratings_icons I love critter co great place to go for all kinds of pets

jennifer d.

I have to say I love critter co. We just went yesterday and we had more than one person ask us if we needed help more times than u figure u would get. They was feeding them and cleaning out cages. We got help when we asked a ?. The kittens r $50 that includes shots and stuff and they do not have a vending machine for stray cats. And they dont have them all the time cause for awhile we was looking for one and they never had them in. Yesterday was the first time i saw them have kittens and its people who is trying to get rid of them so they r helping them out also u know atleast they have their shots and stuff. The armadillo was running around where it stays so it has room. I can say the big snakes need more room but they r being taken care of. And i have never seen a dead animal there dont think i have w the fish either. And everytime we went they was cleaning the tanks out. And we got there alot cause the kids can get up close w the animals and i like that cause they r used to people and you can find out what they r like before u get them home. Your one on one w the animal and thats a + to me. Ive been to petco and petsmart and I dont like them they dont have many animals and i have seen dead fish in their tanks. I like critter co and pet zone. Also ive seen where if one is sick or not old enough they wont sell them untill they r healthy enough. Im not sayin they r perfect and dont have problems but look at all the animals they take care of I think they r doin a the best job they can. And i will be back there w my kids might even have my daughters birthday party there. But if u want a dog and dont want to pay for a pricey one i would say go to the shelter they do have dogs that really needs homes and they r locked up like i jail sometimes waitin until they r put to sleep and its sad. If i could get them all i would but i cant but when i do get one it will be from there. Sometimes they do have full blooded dogs to so thats a plus and its not alot of money and they have shots and all that stuff. So please help the pound if u can thats goes for cats to.

I must say i've gone to this store many times. It is the only petstore i go to.The employees there are quite knowledgeable in their craft and have helped me out alot. I just recently bought a ball python from them that was very sweet.A few weeks later i had some problems with it and they very graciously offered me a new snake. The one i got the second time was even better than the last.Ive also used petsmart and the fish i got from them all died and the fish from critterco did fine. Im pretty sure i will continue to do business this store. They are sweet and courteous and thats just what you get from a small business rather than a big chain store such as petsmart or petco.

Ratings_icons store in general...

Michelle S.

I agree with all the bad reviews. As long as I have been around and that they have the worst pet store in Shreveport/bossier area. I would only go there because it was the only one in Bossier. The place stinks to high heaven, there are to many small animals in one cage and I have been in there when there would be more than 1 dead small animal in the cage with the ones that were still alive. When I have brought it to their attention about the smell all the manager has to say is that "it is going to have an odor because they have life pets," FYI they are not the only ones who have live pets in their pet store and other stores do not smell like that. Also, I have bought rabbits there and they sex them, told me that they were both females, guess what 6 mos later I had babies TWICE..I didn't know females and females could have babies? Their return polices is for the birds too, only store credit you can not get your money back. Well who wants $30 to $??? what ever amount back in store credit? Thank god their is a Petsmart now in my area, if I don't go there then I will go to Pet Zone on Jewella.

Jennifer M.

Well the one thing I have to say is that I just bought a dog from there and had to take her back after myself and my kids fell in love with her because she was sold to us with mange. We are all very upset about it. I figured it would be better to get a dog from a pet store even though I had been told by many not to do so because of breeders that they get the pets from do not take care of the pets, keep them in breeding cages and don't produce healthy pups. Very sorry that I did get her. We now are out of money, had to throw out one day bought bedding and such and out of a dog and have 2 small children very upset.

I live on the other side of Shreveport, in the Keithville area, and I always make it a point to make the drive to Critter Co. on my way home from BPCC. I disagree with the person who made the complaints about their aquarium/aquatics. Every time I go in there the tanks are being cleaned and I don't recall noticing any dead floaters. I do agree that the larger snakes could do with a larger enclosure. There's been times where I've wanted to donate a custom-built for that pretty albino burm they've got. Some of their stuff seems a little over-priced, but when you're the only one who sells such exotics like the ones they do, you have to make your living somehow. The staff is always polite, and if you go in enough times it gets to where they actually recognize you. I've only had one issue with an employee, and she was super new(obviously). Their employees know their stuff and the owner is always around. I would rather support a local business like Critter Co. than a large chain store like PetsMart and Petco.

MOST of the staff is very knowledgeable about the pets they sell, and are ready and willing to keep a look out for anything you may want if they don't have it in stock. I've only had good experiences, and have bought many small animals from critter company. I agree with the complaints about having larger living quarters for some of the animals, though. Over all, I believe critter company is doing a great job.

Ratings_icons Fish are not cared for properly

michelle d.

I bought 3 fish from this store in the last week and brought them home to perfect water conditions that are checked every day. Each of these fish have died and now my other 3 healthy fish have perished from the ich that came home with the C.C. fish. Unfortunately I did not have a quarantine tank to put the new fish before putting them with my other fish. When I went back to take a look at their tanks again, I noticed a number of dead fish in almost all of their tanks. They also have mollies that have been painted on which sickens me. I think Critter Company needs to focus more on one or two types of animals so that they can give them the best care possible. They have too many irons in the fire, so to speak.

Ratings_icons Beware of pregnant animals!!!!

Laura H.

I usually go to Critter Co to get last minute supplies because they are closer, and I only wanted to get my kids female hamsters (cuz I don't like to see the boy parts) but PetSmart doesn't have females because of mating issues. We end up purchasing two female teddy bear hamsters. There were about 30 to choose from in their enclosure. We had to spend some time sexing them because I only wanted females. We get them home and a few days later I notice that one of them is PREGNANT!!! I am extremely upset because I don't believe that individuals should be breeding animals. So not only am I stuck with caring for a bunch of little hamsters, but I am also stuck going against my morals. Critter Co wont take the babies until they are 6-8 weeks (but at least they give you store credit) but now I am stuck in a situation I don't want to be in. Bottom line: They don't separate the men from the women and you could end up with more than you bargained for.

I have been reading a lot of negative reviews about the Critter Company and I must say that I disagree. My wife and I went there back in the summer to look for our little girl a pet. The staff was extremely helpful even as we took our time and looked at all kinds of animals. All of the animals had plenty of water and the habitats were very clean.

Ratings_icons disgusting!!! Should be shut down..

jenn J.

Please do not go there and get you a pet. Go to the shelter. There are 100s of animals every day put to sleep over there at the shelter. We do not need to go and buy an exotic animal just to have one. Who cares if they have a good selection, they are rude and uneducated about their animals. The place is dirty and smelly and the poor animals have fleas. It is insanely sad for the animals of critter company, so so sad! Some one should shut them down and I would be right on the top of that list!

I have been a patron of this store since 2000 when I moved here from new york, as far as I can see the animals are well treated fed, daily, cleaned regularly, and as per staffing although short handed which is a shortcoming, all are very knowledgeable in the there perspective dept. All in all this is a decent family run pet store that deserves your visit, and I will continue my patronage to the location.

Ratings_icons python & armadillo need bigger habitat

Jesse h.

I do business with Critter Company at least once a month, and enjoy looking at all the animals. I think they have started alot better job on the well being of the animals that there selling now, but I do have a major concern with a couple of animals that are not for sell. One is a python that must be at least 6 feet long that stays in a enclosure way to small for its size, and is always there. The other animal is some type of armadillo that is kept in a small cage as well.If your going to keep these type animals in your store for people to look at for enjoyment please make there habitat a little bigger for them. You customers, and the animals will thank you for this.To all please go to your local pound and rescue your next pet they will love you for that.

The animals are in neglect, with soiled bedding, no food, and sometimes a DRIED UP water bowl. This place has had numerous complaints to the Humane Society and only got a MILD improvement in the store. I believe the owner needs to learn to be a businessman involving animals, or close up shop!!

Critter Co. is the best place (pet store) I have ever been to! I am a volunteer up there so I go behind the scenes none of you negative reviewers know how much work these people do and the volunteers!!! Critter co acctually has a variety of pets while petsmart doesn't even have FERRETS what kind of pet store doesn't even have ferrets or bear hamsters! I go to Critter co ALMOST every weekend or at least when I can (school gets in the way a whole bunch) when i do go up there I help i don't stand around and do nothing I do something to help the best pet store i have EVER been to.
Critter Co. means so much to me because I know that blood sweat and tears went into this place and it turned out a heck of a lot better than other places (*cough*cough* Petsmart *cough*cough*)
This is my honest opinion yours may be different.

Well I must say that their grooming there stinks! I got my little dogs nails clipped there and most of the them weren't clipped at all not even attempted. The prices on most stuff is way to high. The smell of the place could be better and the staff could be more knowledgeable and friendly. I've been going to PetCo. Now, that's a nice and clean place.

Ratings_icons Rude Owner, bad animal care

Nicholle R. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,063

I was concerned over the care of their Land Hermit Crabs and asked to talk to the person in charge of their care. I got the store owner and was very sweet to him but he was very rude and defensive in return. The hermit crabs are in an in adequate habitat. Hermit crabs require a high humidity to maintain their shell water and also fresh and salt water sources. They did have one big water bowl (I'm assuming fresh water) But there was no attempt at a cover to keep the humidity high. When I tried to discuss this matter with him in a civilized manner he informed me he didnt have time to "debate" this with me just before Christmas. Hmm..no time for his customer....ok. I wasnt trying to debate with the guy I was just making a suggestion. I wasnt attacking his person or integrity, but I was treated like I was an idiot, and as if he was the great all knowing wizard of OZ. This was an unusual trip for me since I only stopped in out of couriosity since they had changed things up a bit. I stopped going in this store all together when I couldnt stand the smell each time I walked in. This time the smell wasnt so bad but the owners attitude was the thing that stunk.

Ratings_icons Best Local Pet Store, Bar None

FEdward M.

Don't know why other reviews were negative, this Pet Store is the Shreveport/Bossier area's most well stocked, clean and organized shop. The owners, Randy & Rahonda Moore, are helpful, educated, and accomodating. Their Marine & Tropical Fish stock is the area's best, thier equipment very reasonably priced. Their dogs, birds, reptiles, small animals and cats are healthy and are sold with a guarantee.

PROS: Wide assortment of exotic & conventional pets & supplies
CONS: None

I really enjoy looking around in this store. When we first got my kitten, she was a little to interested in climbing my Christmas tree, so we went here, and the staff there kindly suggested a product, that was a little pricey but did actually work to keep kitty away. They offer a great selection of products here.

Ratings_icons Large collection of animals

Elizabeth B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,455

Critter Company offers one of the largest collection of pets in Bossier. They sell a full line of reptiles and birds, as well as everything rodent you could want. They have a small selection of pure bred dogs, and a vending machine full of stray cats for $35 each. I kid you not. While the selection of merchandise is impressive, the staff isn't. There are usually too few people on the floor to assist customers, and they take months to process and deliver paperwork.

PROS: One stop shopping for your pet needs
CONS: Not enough staff, and they're inefficient
