Bad experience
by Donna G.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is stuggling to rebuild it's city and community. It has been known in the past that hospitality is one of the city's best assests. On July 8, 2006, I visitied the "French Market Restaurant and Bar" with my family and was appalled at the disregard for customer service. The service was poor, the food was below average and when I complained about an entree I recieved the response from the server was "Oh, it must be too spicy" and she then took my plate away. When I asked a hostess who the manager was she pointed him out but did not offer to get him or ask me if I had a problem. When I did finally get the manager's attention he didn't offer any resolve and wanted to know where the food was that I was complaining about. I told him the server took it away and he said without the food he could not do anything about it. I also asked about the 18% gratuity added for a party of 5 and he said that was standard for the French Quarter and walked away with an attitude. We had two cups of Gumbo, two shrimp po-boys, a dozen oysters on the half shell, an entree The Bayou Platter(red beans and rice, jambalaya and shrimp creole $14.95) which was the one I complained about, and soft drinks and the check was $90.32. I refused to pay for the entree that I did not eat and left $80.00 on the table and left. The manager followed me and my family out of the restaurant and threatened to call the police because I didn't pay for the check. I believe he was getting more than was due by getting the $80.00 but he insisted that I pay the entire check or he would call the police. My mother, who is 70 years old, was very upset and would not let him call the police. She asked me to pay the bill and just forget it, which I did for her but I would have gladly discussed this with the officers if they had been called. I have been in the restaurant business for many years and as a manager when a guest complains about anything, I take pride in making the guest happy. The treatment I recieved from the staff at "The Original French Market Restaurant and Bar" was anything but hospitable and I am ashamed that they are part of the re-building of New Orleans. I hope no one else gets the treatment that I received

Great food and people watching! See all the tourist walk by (drunk or otherwise) while enjoying great food. Try some of the southern dishes, you won't regret it!
