STEVEN SOBEL is Wonderful!

by Christine M.

This is a great salon, I got the perfect cut and the perfect color first try, and being from NYC, the price was very reasonable. Unfortunately, when I called back for a second appt., the girl who did my hair, Chelsey, was no longer there. However, I will give another one of their stylists a try.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO PLEASED WITH MY HAIR!!

by Ashley L.

I have been looking for a salon where I didnt feel like I was in a factory and wasn't rushed that did a great job also. My friend referred me to Steven Sobel Salon and it was exactly what I was looking for! They told me that he was rated one of the best colorist in Allure Magizine and now I can definately see why! I told him exactly what I wanted with my cut and color and that is what I received. I have NEVER been so pleased with my hair and not only did I get great hair but I got an amazing experience! Everyone there is so nice and welcoming, It is hard to find a salon that you like every aspect of ...and now I have found mine! Thank you so much everyone at Steven Sobel and I urge everyone looking for something new, try it...you will not be let down!

expected way more from a top stylist .
stylist did pretty much whatever she/he wanted ..
well ...simply to expensive for a so..so job .
waste of money.

Great color -- awful cuts

by Jeanne S.

I moved here from NYC last year and was in need of a good salon. My first appointment at Sobel was good because I didn't ask for anything different and there was already a good base with which to work that had been established by my previous stylist. The next time was definitely not as good although acceptable but the third time was a complete disaster as far as the cut was concerned. I asked for long layers for volume and I ended up with an extremely short cut that was thinned out unnecessarily and unfortunately is now totally unmanageable and frizzy -- I cannot do anything with it and can't wait until it grows out. The stylist -- the same one who did my color and cut the past two times -- obviously wasn't paying attention this time around or didn't know how to professionally execute my request. Also, a highlight and cut process that should have taken around two and a half hours took more than four because she overbooked clients and constantly stopped to talk about her personal life. For me, it was less expensive than what I paid in NYC, but I'd rather pay a premium for high quality work. The best advice I can give you is to do more research and find a better place. Please learn from my experience...I wish I had done so a lot sooner.

Wonderful! Always satisfied!

by Suz O.

For years I have been going to Steven for haircuts and color. Steven is magnificent with color - I've done blonde, red, highlights, etc. He is also creative and stylish with haircuts. It always looks natural, wears well and gets compliments.

If you are looking for a new place - or are tired of that same old style - give Steven Sobel a try!

Fantastic hair salon on quiet Maple Street

by Joy D.

I've been a client of Steven's for about five years now, and he gets my highest recommendation. Every time I go in, Steven and I talk about my job (an engineer) and how I want a haircut that is low maintenance enough to not get in the way of my busy day, but also cute and attractive enough to keep my femininity in an office full of men. He then goes to work, designing me a haircut that fits exactly what I want. We call it "sexy engineer hair" because it's easy and flattering on a daily basis, but with enough sass to be noticed when I'm going out. It is a different cut every time, but I'm always amazed by the number of compliments I receive and the great way the cut grows out.
I've noticed that others have commented on the price of this salon. SuperCuts, this is not. But, with the quality, the professionalism, and the attention given to each customer, it is absolutely worth it.

Great cuts from two different stylists..don't expect to leave for under $50

by Alexis N.

My husband and I have both had our hair cut at Steve Sobel, and we've both been happy with the results. Ivonne did a good job on my basic haircut, and more recently Rena cut about 6 inches off my hair and gave me a really nice bob. I went in with a basic idea of what I wanted and left the rest up to her. At first I was a little nervous because she seemed unsure, but the finished product was great! She took her time and didn't rush, which I appreciate. They were even able to see me on short notice - the same afternoon that I called for an appointment. This is a good salon if you have an idea of what you want but need some expert advice to be sure. My only complaint is the price - $50 for a haircut is certainly expensive, but I don't mind paying more for a drastic change executed well. The staff is fashionable but friendly, and I'll definitely be going back.

Sobel Salon is tucked away in peaceful uptown New Orleans. At first glance you would think its just another cute little Orleans home which gives it a home town feel. Inside you are taken away to hair paradise.

Okay, but theres better

by carrie l. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,715

I found my experience here to be stressful. Perhaps it was just a bad day at the Salon. They did a descent hair cut , I just picked up a slight negative attitude with my stylist. It seemed over priced for what you actually get.

Not good for guys

by DDLion

I walked into the salon and requested advice on what sort of styles and such would look good with my face and expressed a few concerns about my hair that I'd like to correct. Neither of these were addressed by the stylist. It seems as if she merely evened out and trimmed my hair without styling it and without regard to what my type of hair needed. I walked in there ready to pay any price for an excellent haircut, and walked out thinking it was overpriced (Even though $30 isn't that much). I guess they assume guys don't mind mediocre haircuts (or won't notice). I usually get my hair cut at Cuttin' Loose (where I will be returning) but had to try this place because of the raves. I was going to give this place 3 stars because it was OK, but the the casually racist comments by the stylist deserve a 1-star reduction.

Pros: Proximity to better salons, I've heard they do good color

Cons: Expected a more thoughtful haircut

Steven has been cutting my hair for about 4 years now and I am ALWAYS happy with the cut. Monique does a wonderful job of my color and is always pleasant, upbeat and gives an incredibly relaxing shampoo massage! Everyone at the salon is clearly interested in making each of my visits a very positive experience. I'm so happy I found them!

The best NOLA salon for cut // color

by Babs 2

After 20 years I can say that I have always received a consistently expert cut for baby fine hair and color is always spot on.....my hair never has that awful "dyed" look.
People cannot believe that I have such fine hair because Steven cuts it so well that it has so much body.
Monique and Kirsten are delightful -- both are very knowledgeable and talented.
The shop atmosphere is very inviting.
I recommend SSS to all!!

Orange hair is rad, man.

by Sweet tassels

I went to this salon thinking it was the BEST in New Orleans ( because of the great reviews) well turns out, they turned my beautiful blonde locks ORANGE! can you say OVER RATED... maybe if you are an average Joe or a plain Jane then this would be a good place for you. Never again. I could have done this BS myself with an at home kit. FU thanks for ruining my hair before my wedding little girls

Pros: not the end of the world, I guess.

Cons: waisting my time driving from Biloxi to NOLA to this shithol

Love my hair

by tlacs

thank you Kristen and Steven for the amazing coloring of my hair... You guys got it right on the money with the color i was going for .. Plus given that you had to correct the coloring and haircut that I had gotten from a previous salon, which was horrible (as you know). BUT Kristen and Steven thank you for correcting my hair and bringing life back into it.. I love love love my hair ..
Steven, i love how you just look at someones hair, facial frame, style, and personality and concoct a color and hairstyle that goes perfect for that individual. Kristen, i spent a couple of hours with you and you are a true perfectionist, you took time and great care with my hair and in turn it was perfect.. thank you guys Tess
see you again

Thank you kristen!

by Kelly86

Today was my first visit to the Steven Sobel salon and though I was a bit timid about trying a new salon I have to say, I was VERY impressed. Both Steven and Kristen (my colorist) were very professional and took their time to help me correct my color. I will be returning to Kristen from now on, shes given me the best color experience Ive had in years. Also, Steven, thank you for being involved and for your concern. Most salon owners are too busy or too concerned with other things to stop and provide individual attention to their guests. Thanks again, I love my red hair!

Pros: professional, friendly, patient

Great color

by cole24

Kristen K. did my color and did a great job of it. I wanted a tough color to get, silver, (and I have dark hair which makes it even harder to achieve) and she did a great job of getting it there. She also made sure to tell me to call and let her know how it was working out so she would know if the bleached hair really took the color or if it faded. I will definitely go back since I know she is so careful and adequate about color.

Steven Sobel

by rufus70119

I always was afraid to get a haircut until I started going to Steven's salon. I've never gotten a bad haircut or coloring over the past three years of going to this convenient Maple St. salon. Besides great haircuts, the salon is tastefully decorated and has a friendly goldendoodle to greet you (though don't leave any food around).

Pros: Good Converstation

The only place in New Orleans for a naturally curly cut!

by PfabulousRed

I have been a client of Steven's since 1995. I originally went to him for color, expecting to leave with some shade of blonde, since I had been blonde as a kid and young teenager. However, he flipped through several shade books, consulted a co-worker, and came back to me pointing to a red. The rest is history. I have had many passing strangers compliment my "naturally" red curly, long hair. Sometimes I say, "thank you" and walk away, and sometimes I say, "Steven Sobel on Maple Street."
I will never let any one else cut my hair, because Steven truly understands the challenges of naturally wavy and curly hair...he has it himself! He never cuts my hair too short or in a fashion that will not work with my natural kinks.
The atmosphere is sleek but casual and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. You may be greeted by Midnight (the gentle giant), grab a few Tootsie Rolls at the counter for some sugar, and select from a variety of reading materials near the comfy couches. There's an awesome back porch outside where you can hang out while your color or highlights set.
The clientele is of all ages, some men but mostly women, Uptown socialites and working women from the suburbs. The cost seems to be about average for a high-quality salon, but in other places the "penalty" for having long hair seems way out of whack.
As a hard-working, two-job-having Metairie woman, I do have to budget for my visits...but every visit is a treat and Steven is worth every penny.

Pros: Being greeted by Midnight

Cons: Being overly dependent on Steven

Most natural looking color I have ever had!

I went in for a much needed color and highlight. I hadn't had my hair colored in over a year. Steven perfectly matched my skin tones with my requests for highlights and color. Together, Steven and I figured out the perfect haircut for my lifestyle. It was a great experience and I would recommend this salon to everyone.

Pros: Friendly, knowledgeable staff

Fantastic Salon!

by mort2000

This was my first visit to Steven Sobel and I loved it! They staff truly understand that it's not just about about the haircut, but the entire experience. I felt welcomed from the moment I walked in the door. Monique was super. Not only did she give me an amazing new style, but her shampooing was best I've had at a salon in years. They also have an adorable dog, Midnight, running around! I would highly recommend this salon.

Best place for hair in NOLA!

by EveRenae

I have been going to the Steven Sobel Salon for over a year and can't say enough good things about my service and my hair! Rena (one of the fab stylists) gave me the most beautiful blond hair and is always a joy to talk to. Rena is very talented and thanks to her work, I have never felt prettier. Unlike the other salon's I have been to in New Orleans, they really do put the customer first, are not snotty and never make you feel like just a number. As long as I am here in New Orleans, I would never go to any other salon but Steven Sobel.

Pros: Friendly and talented staff!

I love everything about this place! The staff are awesome, the BEST shampooing experience and of course, Steven is the BOMB! He is a true professional. He always listens to me and the ideas I have for my hair. He never enforces his "way" (like at some other salons I have been to) and I ALWAYS leave completely happy with my color and haircut. I would highly recommend this salon to anyone and everyone, you will not be disappointed!

never have gotten a bad haircut or color here

my hair color(and I've changed it a few times) always gets positive comments on how natural it looks. I'm old enough to have gray hair, and it's not gray, which is how people know. Have never been dissatisfied with a cut, and pretty much leave it up to the stylist. Very relaxing place to be taken care of.

Pros: attentive; anxious to please; accomodating

The place in NO to get the haircut you've always wanted

by 39er

I'm a guy with curly, wavy hair. I was never getting any satisfaction out of my haircuts till I came to Steven Sobel's hair salon. After my first haircut there I stuck like gum on hair to that place ever since. It's the only place I get my haircut now. And with however long I'm in and out of New York every year, I always wait till I come home to New Orleans to get my haircut. Yeah, he's that good! Everyone there is nice and friendly too. And whether you know or not how you want your hair cut, Steven always knows how to cut a marvel out of people's hair.

Pros: Always on time and cuts geat/amazing hair color

Best color in New Orleans

by adeliepenguin

I started going to this salon when I moved into the neighborhood and read all of the great reviews. It was a great choice. I was impressed with the personal attention on my first visit with regards to hair color, and I have always been happy with the cuts as well. Steven is truly an expert with color! He even used a mild dye solution so that I could get color while I was pregnant. My color never use to last like it does now since going to Steven!

Pros: Personal attention

Best Haircut for men in town

Steven Sobel does a great job. He's cool, quick and his place is always packed with the hottest women in town. If you need a really good haircut, he's the man. My sisters have gone to him for years for coloring, I just go because he's a blast & gets me in & out in 20.

And did I mention all the hot women?

Pros: Friendly, quick and fair priced

Best color in town...fabulous cut and amazing dry and straightening!

by virginiaparker

Steven Sobel does amazing color...I get compliments on it for months. The day before I go to get a touch up I am still being told how good it looks! He also does fabulous cuts - gives you exactly what you ask for and tells you what will work with your hair. My favorite is that his folks can dry you and iron out the most frizzy hair and in New Orleans that says a lot!

The only place I have been where the hair looks good for so long! Even after I do it myself.

Pros: Comfortable space

Cons: can be hard to park sometimes

great salon!

by beflan81

I just moved to New Orleans a month ago and was actually looking on Citysearch to find a place to do my highlights and trim my hair. I chose Steven Saldo Salan because of the good reviews on here and because it was close by. I just got back from my appointment, and wanted to add another good review. The color and cut turned out great! I am always nervous going to someone new, but I had to because I just moved here. It took me many tries to find my last person, so I was thinking that would be the case here as well. Instead, I left knowing that this would be the place I would come the rest of my time in New Orleans. The salon is modern and clean, but has a comfortable feeling (not that snobby salon attitude that some places have). Everyone was friendly and welcoming. They did a fantastic job of doing exactly what I had in mind with the color, and the price was reasonable. Another satisfied customer!

Pros: Great color, plenty of products but they didn't push you on buying anything, Clean facilities, Friendly people

Cons: Not a lot of parking, but that's kind of the case anywhere in New Orleans

NEVER BEEN HAPPIER

by MINEW

For many years I have been a devoted client of the AVEDA Salon but could never understand why my highlighted hair had somewhat of a green hue to it. I thought it was my imagination, until one day, a friend (whom I had not seen in many years) mentioned that my hair looked a bit green. At that point, I knew it was NOT MY IMAGINATION. She recommended me to the Steven Sobel Salon on Maple Street where she has been a client for many years. I called for an appointment, was seen within a day.....my consult was with Steven.....NEED I SAY MORE.....my hair is now gorgeous.....the salon and staff are fabulous and I am so very happy. Exactly what I wanted

by mes1987

I went to Steven Sobel for the first time and got my long hair cut and colored. My friend and her family have been going to him for years, and her hair has always come out great. Steven recommended a darker shade which I was skeptical of at first, but it came out great. I couldn't have been happier with the warm service and great stylists. The cut was great and fit my face perfectly. I will definitely be back and would recommend this salon to all of my friends. Great results!

Very personalized service

by dream75517

For my entire life, I've had my hair done by the same salon in New York. It was a Korean place, and the owner was a friend of my mom's. I love perming my straight hair, but with my salon in New York, that service was something to be desired. The curls were uneven, and my hair came out dry and crispy looking. No matter how many pictures I showed them, the results (1) looked nothing like the picture, but (2) always looked the same as all the previous perms. As I am in New Orleans for most of the year, I decided to look for a salon here. I remembered Steven Sobel from an InStyle magazine that featured them as the best salon in New Orleans to get a color treatment. I made an appointment with Ivonne, who has naturally curly hair herself. For a person usually left with a magazine while my stylist went to take care of another person, the one-on-one session was luxurious, if not a little disconcerting. I told her about my previous experiences, and for the first time, I was an active player in choosing the size of the rollers, where the curls began, and how it was done. From 2 until closing, I was the only customer, and I felt very taken care of. I asked for it to be more curly than not, and when it was done, it was a little too curly. She said it would loosen out and surely enough it did. I got so many compliments, by people who never complimented me when I had my previous perms- that says something, doesn't it?

Pros: Loved the results

Cons: Had to pay for some hair products put in after perm- though I was never asked, nor notified of extra price
