My most recent visit to Marc Harris was amazing. I was in a bridal party and somehow Janet was able to create 6 amazing updos in less than 3 hours. She was able to replicate the individual look we were all looking for yet connect us in a seamless way that made us all feel beautiful. The non stress environment and helpful staff made it a day to remember.
I'm very torn about my review for Marc Harris. I LOVE Claudia. She is a fantastic stylist. I HATE the front desk people. They are rude and obnoxious. They act as though they are better than everyone else and as though they are annoyed by your presence. Any time I call to make an appointment or change an appointment, they seem inconvenienced and as if they are doing me a huge favor. It is there JOB to help customers find an appointment. It is a shame that such a great stylist and haircut comes with such a terrible experience.
I love this salon. It?s clean and modern and the best part is that you get a massaging chair when you get you hair washed! They have someone for everyone in this salon! I have been going for years and don?t think I will ever change. I followed my hair dresses about eight years ago when she move to Marc Harris and I could not be happier!
PROS: On Newbury St. great location
CONS:
If you have wavy, frizzy, dark hair, whatever you do, DO NOT get your hair colored by Robert, or even better, stay away from Marc Harris. A few days after my cut and color there my scalp started peeling off in chunks because he put sooo many different types of coloring products in my hair. He couldnt get the color right and kept trying different things, I finally had to put an end to it after the 3rd attempt. I also requested a haircut style similar to someone else who cuts hair at the salon and he proceeded to do something completely different. Horrible experience from the beginning (bitchy receptionist - he was on the feminine side, dark hair with blonde streets) to the end (horrendous color job + hair cut, burnt scalp, and lost $150 + tip and 3 hours of doing things to my hair). NEVER AGAIN!
I am so completely happy with my experience at Salon Marc Harris! I was a little late and the front desk was very understanding and quite friendly. I took advantage of the Cut-A-Thon for Childrens Hospital. What drew me there was that haircuts were $40 (cut a thon price) and I've wanted to go there for a while, so I figured this would be a great opportunity. I was pretty sure I'd get a great haircut but I was SO incredibly happy to get one of the best cuts I've ever had. Anthony listened to what I wanted and incorporated that into what he knew would be the best cut for me. I'm just blown away with this cut! He took his time with me and really helped me with styling tips. I'm totally sure I can replicate the style at home. I'm very impressed with Anthony and will be a client from here on out and gladly pay $55 for a perfect cut.
Pros: Clean, Friendly, Reasonable Prices
Cons: That I can't bring Anthony home with me.
I finally found Chris Kishfy, he is by far the best colorist around. Every time he does my hair I feel a million times better about myself and get more compliments than I can handle! He's now at Salon Navid at 63 Park St. Andover 978-470-4704. I have nothing but great compliments to say about him and the service that he provides!
Pros: Best colorist around
So it's not the most luxurious salon on Newbury Street, but for a high-end salon, the prices are fab. My aunt has gotten her hair cut for years by Yesi, and got me a gift card to try her out. I honestly felt a bit rushed by her, and she didn't try to talk to me too much. Her shampoo was great, though, and the products smelled so yummy! The cut itself was a bit more dramatic than what I hoped for, but I got SO many compliments on my hum-drum hair upgrade. For $45, it was definitely worth it.
Pros: Urban hair cuts, shampoo
Cons: Not overly luxurious
I was new to the city in September, and when I needed a cut and color I came right to citysearch. I found Salon Marc Harris and called that very day, and they were able to give me an appointment that SAME night! I was thrilled. They set me up with JACQUI who is so nice and friendly and AMAZING! She gave me the best cut and color i have EVER had! The prices are reasonable ($45 for a haircut and $45 for a single process color). And I am short and always have a problem with the sinks when they go to do the wash, but the sinks here are adjustable for your height, and the chairs in the wash section as MASSAGE chairs! great! plus, there is wireless internet there if you need to use a laptop while your color sets... everyone seems really friendly, but i definitely recommend asking for JACQUI... she's the best (she's been there for years and works different days at both locations)...Go here and you won't be disappointed!
Pros: good prices, adjustable sinks, massage chairs, friendly
Cons: none that i can think of
I've been getting my hair cut and colored at Marc Harris for over a year now and I would never go anywhere else in Boston! Lisa is a whiz with the scissors...I always walk out feeling rejuvinated. The atmosphere is trandy, yet unpretentious...and always comfortable.
I've been a bottle blonde for a while now, and when I moved from California, it took me a while to find a hair colorist/stylist. After trying a few other salons on Newbury St, I finally found David Feener at Salon Marc Harris. David is somehow is able to make my completely processed hair feel touchably soft and silky. Most people can't believe that my hair is acutally colored, because it looks and feels so healthy and smooth. Even other hair colorists are impressed by how light my hair is and how great the texture is. If you are interested in changing your hair color (or maintaining your new color), see David Feener so that you can have soft, unprocessed-looking/feeling hair.
I recently relocated to Boston from the midwest and found myself flying back to Chicago to have my hair done...I did my research and thought I would give The Marc Harris Salon a try and made an appointment with Genevieve. IF YOU ARE NEW TO BOSTON AND ARE LOOKING FOR AN AWESOME STYLIST, GO TO GENEVIEVE! I cannot begin to tell you what a great experience I had! Beautiful color and cut...long or short! Genevieve is great! Well worth the cost.
Pros: Location, Staff
Cons: none
I am a model in Boston and get my color done by David Feener. Often, at modeling gigs, people will ask me who did my hair and I'll tell them the name of the salon that styled my hair for the event - but what they really want to know is who did my hair color. I'm not sure how David does it, but someone he is able to get my hair blonde blonde blonde without bleaching it - my hair couldn't be any softer that it is. He's also the best there is at color corrections, and often tells me about clients who come in with bad color situations and how he totally fixes their hair. For top notch color, definitely trust your tresses to David Feener at Salon Marc Harris.
Why is that hair salons that can't win their own catagory pretend to be barbershops to win a title that doesn't belong to them..... this a licenced hair salon not a licenced barbershop.....i wish hairdressers would stop pretending to be barbers...two different schooling techniques and licences ..... lets keep it real!
Please do not book here! I booked in to have my wedding party's hair done at this salon with the stylist Janet Warner, over three months before my wedding. I paid $300 for a trial and put a 50% deposit down for the wedding. Less than 3 weeks before the wedding, the salon called and said Janet had to cancel, because she had other plans. Three weeks before a wedding is not enough time to find someone else! And only after fighting with them and threatening a law suit, did they finally repay PART of the money, but not all of it! This salon and Janet Warner are completely unprofessional and unethical and terrible! Please don't make the same mistake I did!!!! If I could give this zero stars I would!
Cons: unprofessional and unethical
I loved the cut I got there! Especially as I wasn't sure in the beginning, you know how it can be: you have a general idea, but need a specialist to tell you how it can be done to become you. Rogue is that person! Got lots of advices too. Will definitely come there again. Been there at 12 pm, nice and quiet.
Pros: Great stylist (Rogue)
Cons: Never got the coffee I asked for... But it's a hair salon, right?
I went here for the first time last week and have finally found "the one!" I moved to Boston a little over a year ago from the west coast and have had the hardest time finding a salon that really caters to you and is up to date with the newest hair styles and techniques. I went to Genevive for a cut, color and highlights and it turned out perfectly. I also asked for advice on shampoos and conditioners and I did not feel pressured to buy products (I did anyway) and that was a refreshing approach.
I love the massage shampoo chairs and the staff is very nice. The prices are reasonable (check out the website) considering it is on Newbury and the stylist there are very good! When I made an appt, they were up front about the costs of my services and I knew exactly what I could expect.
Yesterday was my first visit to the salon, and I saw Genevieve. I was first pleased to enter a salon that was clean, trendy, and upbeat, but not at all pretentious for such a classy Newbury street salon. I was even more pleased to meet Gevevieve, my sweet, understandng, and talented hairstylist. She listened to everything I wanted, and gave me a beautiful color that was just what I asked for: a medium brown color with warm highlights. This trip was a big one for me in that I was to cut my middle-of-the back long hair a bit and get bags!! (longer swept-to-the side bangs). Gevevieve totally recognized my slight apprehension and walked me through everything. She also kept my long hair just where I wanted it: only an inch less than where it was when I walked into the salon. I definitely reccommend both Genevieve and the salon because of my great experience. I've already received a dozen compliments, and it's only been 2 days! Trust this place it you want to make a hair change in your life--it's a bit pricey, but you'll be so happy with the results.
I went today to see Lauren. I was nervous, because I have waist-length boring hair , which I have no inclination to change, and the past few years I have been to 'long hair specialists' in NYC. I also survived a number of hair nightmares between ages 10-17, so I know what I do and don't want, but am not too good at withstanding pressure. I've also been to numerous fancy salons.
Lauren was v. assuring and did not pressure me at all: she must have sensed that I had no desire for layers, etc etc. She cut very little of my hair, just as she said she would, and she did a great job: blunt at the back, just what I asked for. She took her time and she was kind and thoughtful. I talked over colour with her, too, and she was good at convincing me to to do this at a future point.
No sales pressure, and the salon was not intimidating at all, as I feared it might be (I'm not a chic person, even though I usually pay the big bucks to be sure my hair is preserved properly). Lauren was kind and trustworthy, someone I would recommend to people with long hair who value their length! I looked around for a bit before settling here, and I'm glad I did. I'll go back and feel assured when I do. By the bye, the price was quite reasonable: $55 plus tip! In NYC, I never paid less than $100 for a trim, so this is a real find.
Thank you Lauren: for listening to me, keeping my hair, giving me a nice trim and , best of all, a hairdresser in Boston I can trust.
Pros: Good prices, kind and trustworthy, unpretentious, talent
Cons: I didn't park there, and wouldn't. It's Newbury St. Take the T ! Otherwise, none.
So I am new to Boston and I came on this site to find a good hair salon.I read the reviews and decided upon the Marc Harris Salon. I was very excited about all the rave reviews and I couldn't wait to get my haircut. Well when I get there I am greated by a receptionist that is very short with me. I am taken aback by this, as I had thought they would be more cordial. I write it off as possible snottiness which occassionally occurs at the top salons around the country. So I go over to help myself to a drink and all I see is hot drinks like coffee and tea, and it was blazing heat on the 3rd floor of this old building. I was going to ask the receptionist if they had anything cool to drink but with the way she greeted me I thought better of it. So I decide to forget it and just sit and wait patiently. My stylist greats me and is very nice. I tell them exactly what I want done with my hair and they seem to understand exactly. But as the cutting begins it does not look like they are doing what I asked but of course they are the stylist, the expert. I am not one to tell someone how to do their job, so I just sit there patiently. As the time ticks on I see my hair getting shorter and shorter. I end up having my hair cut at least 3 inches shorter than I had specifically stated. So now instead of my long hair that I came in with it is now nearly shoulder length, much shorter than the "trim" I had asked for. So I was not thrilled to say the least. I am not one to be a pain so I politely thanked the stylist and even left a great tip. On the way out the receptionist was again rude and abrupt with me. ** To top things off the electric went out 2 times while I was there and we just had to wait about 10 minutes each time for it to come back on. I must say all and all it was not what I was expecting and I am very disappointed. I would say this salon is average but I am only giving it 2 stars because for the status and the price it should have been a lot more than what it was.
Pros: Great shampoo/scalp massage, friendly stylist, massage chair is nice
Cons: uncomfortably hot, unfriendly/unhelpful receptionist, not what I wanted or expected for the status/price
Don't go to Christina if you plan on keeping any of your hair!! Being new to Boston, I took a lot of time researching and looking into Salons and stylists. I heard of Salon Marc Harris through a friend and she recommended two different stylists to me. Although she gave me recommendations- I decided who to go to based on the Stylist profiles on the website. Christina looked like a good match for me- her profile states that she believes in classy/beautiful hair cuts. When I got there- she barely paid attention to me. She made me sit in the "massage" chairs while I waited for a shampoo. While the other stylists made sure their clients were comfortable, she was chatting it up with her other stylist friends. When I finally sat down with her- I wanted to show her some pictures of what I wanted- she kind of rushed me through these. She then started cutting my hair and informed that she would be "thinning it out a little bit" - she NEVER explained what this actually means. Needless to say- my once beautiful thick hair now feels ratty, dry and all of the shine is gone. It was ABSOLUTELY not worth the $70 dollars- I could have gotten a better hair cut at Hair Cuttery. When I called and complained she blamed my hair looking bad on my SHAMPOO!!!! I will never go back and I will never recommend it to anyone.
Pros: Clean
Cons: They are busy and fairly snobby
It was my first time at this salon and i read all the great reviews and i googled as well:) I haven't colored my hair in 2 years due to wanting to get my hair healthy..My hair became very healthy and natural.. but i reallly wanted my blonde highlighted hair again:) I was extremely nervous and the girl was really sweet but i left w/ orange hair!! I am extremely upset and i will never recommend this place due to the fact my hair was such an easy thing to do.. no prior color or anything. I was told to try my orange color hair for a few days and if i still feel its orange come back.hahaha....the way i feel is .If you ruin my hair once i will never have you touch it again.. i hate ..hate my hair right now and i am scared to color it again b/c i don't want damage!! and i hate looking in the mirror.. its that BAD!! anyway if anyone reading this has a good colorist that maybe can fix this brassy/ carrot head (thats me) let me know:)
I would like the thank GENEVIEVE for the awesome experience. I walked into MARC HARRIS SALON and walked out a very happy women. She gave me the best style ever. I had no idea what I wanted and left the decisions all up to her. She has so much knowlegde I will never go anywhere else. I am very pleased with the cut, foils, and style. Not sure how long she has been a stylist but it must be many years as she knows her stuff. THANKS AGAIN SO MUCH GENEVIEVE.
Pros: Very Professional Service
Mr. Marc Harris is just brilliant. He transform my helmet hair to somthing with lots of volume and texture, and it takes me five minutes to style my hair to perfection. My global search for perfect hair stylist is finally over ( yes, I traveled to LA and NYC to get haircuts from celebrity hair stylists)! Marc is the guy!!
Pros: !!!!!
Cons: none
I was in last week and got the best trim and style ever from Genevieve. She also has the best personality I have ever seen. She is so friendly and such a joy to have doing my hair. I wouldn't have anyone else. My highlights are awesome. I got so many compliments....one even from a women who owns her own salon near my home town. She wanted to know where I had my hair done. MARC HARRIS on Newbury was my answer. You guys are great. Also would like to thank Jake for being such a wonderful receptionist. He's always so pleasant when he answers the phone. Keep up the good work guys.
Pros: All GOOD!!!
Cons: Just go early so you can get a parking spot on the street. Takes about 10 minutes.
After recently moving to the area I went to 3 other salons before trying Salon Marc Harris. All of them either left me with gross yellow highlights or an inch of roots still showing.
The first time I went to Marc Harris I saw Chris and just wanted a haircut. He did a great job and I've recieved tons of compliments on it. I recently went back for full highlights, Chris was away so I went to see Yesi- and she did an incredible job! With other salons I felt like I spent so much time explaining what I wanted and they still didn't get it. Yesi understood what I wanted immediately and I have never been happier with my hair color. And the prices aren't ridiulous either. My co-workers were shocked when I told them I only payed $40 for a great haircut on Newbury st!
I've gone to Krista a few times on Monday evenings, and both times, she did an EXCELLENT job! Marc was there the first time and Rogue was there the second time, and they were also so so nice and really helpful. I have long, thick hair that can often get really big or frizzy when it's rainy outside or if I don't blowdry it properly or if I don't style it properly, and since I've been going to see Krista, I rarely have a bad hair day (if you can believe it). I get compliments on my hair practically every other day, no joke. I love it and I tell everyone to check 'em out. Two other friends of mine from school have gone now and they were also so pleased with their respective stylists that they don't want to go anywhere else. Krista managed to give me a super cute, chic, classy, and easy-to-manage haircut, so I can change it up for work, for going out, and for working out easily AND it still looks great (whether it's for professional or play)! I've never been able to replicate the style she gave me last time, but it's ok -- it's cut so well that it looks good regardless! Each of the staff members with whom I have interacted has always been super friendly. Thanks! :)
Pros: Everything! Highly talented stylists with a great aesthetic eye and excellent skills
Cons: Takes awhile, but it's worth it
IN response to the business comment:
Unable to substantiate this review Posted on 03/08/2007
Our City Search coupon offer expired last December. The last client to use the coupon was on January 6th and was seen by a male Stylist, while this client refers to a female Stylist. Further, none of our Front Desk staff has any recollection of any such incident. The reference to our prices being ?a fortune? seems odd as well. Our price for a wash, cut and dry, depending on the Stylist, range from $40 to $75, generally not considered a fortune on Newbury Street. All reviews posted are investigated and taken seriously, but this review has several flags that raise suspicion as to its authenticity. If indeed this situation did occur, we would encourage this client to directly contact our Client Services Manager.
I went to the salon on Sat. December 16 and saw Rogue. The front desk does not have recolection of the incident because it was the stylists who attempted to figure out the coupon and what they were supposed. to do. The minimum price for a female cut was $60 for a junior stylist. considering no one dried my hair, the cut was a joke, the coupn incident was ridiculous, all in all, I do think the price was excessive. The price you quote of $40, I suspect is for male cuts only, and is misleading to readers of this site. I assure you that my experience and review was legitimate.
After moving to Boston a few months back I began the search for a great salon. I researched reviews on here and other sites and thought I'd give Salon Marc Harris a go. Before my fabulous new cut and colour I had long, straight, drab, damaged brown hair. I now have a beautiful honey higlighted bob. My stylist was Lisa and she was warm, conversational and knew exactly what she was doing. I took a picture along of how I wanted my hair and despite the fact I couldnt have too much colour as I already had some on, my hair looks exactly how I wanted it. Everyone in the salon is friendly and helpful and there is certainly no 'fashion/beauty snobbery' here. It is beautifully decorated and as other reviewers have said feels likea very swish NY loft with lots of attention to detail. Lisa also gave me great advice on styling my hair and recommended which products to use without pushing them on me. Overall a wonderful experience and a stylist you can trust.
Rogue gave me the best haircut I?ve ever had, I?ve been to her three times now and even let her color my never-been-dyed blonde hair. When I got my hair colored I loved it but she was very honest with me and said she had wanted it to be a little bit more intense, and even though I loved it I agreed (it actually worked out really well, I got used the idea of a different color hair), I went back a week later for a complimentary "fix up" and left the happiest I?ve ever been with my hair :-) Everyone in at Marc Harris is very nice and attentive, the massage chairs at the washing stations are fabulous. The atmosphere is easy and friendly and the most I've waited for my appointment was 5 minutes. My full highlights and cut cost $190 plus tip, definitely worth it.
Pros: Just about everything
Cons: Takes a chunk of time out of your day
I read 'best of boston' magazine and did a bunch of research & chose to go with Marc at Marc Harris salon a week+ ago. I liked how his website was so informative with each stylists' esthetics and styles. Even though it was a Saturday morning the place was buzzing and pretty crowded, and even though it was busy I must say every single staff I came across were terribly helpful and friendly. Marc is also a very lovely, friendly man and listened to my two ideas for a hair cut then suggested not to cut my super long hair too short but to add lots of 'fun layers' and 'work with the length'. I liked the sounds of it and let him do his magic with his razor. He cut my hair so fast but also took a long time to details. I for a moment thought about Edward Scissor Hands since my hair was flying off around me. Somehow he seemed to know exactly what he was cutting. The end result was pretty different and spiky & I was very pleased. I waited for a week+ to leave a review just so I could wear it for a while and see how it did. I LOVE MY HAIRCUT and although it's tricky to get it to look exactly like Marc styled it at his salon (as it always is..) and takes a while to style, I absolutely feel happy with my haircut. It's Fun, Different & still Classy and most importantly it fits my facial shape. I loved that Marc was able to make me just relax and not worry about how my hair was going to turn out. I recommend his salon highly!
I found Salon Marc Harris here on CitySearch and figured I'd give it a try. I'm so glad I did! I had Yesi, and she did an amazing job with my cut and color. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Pros: Friendy, Great Shampoo, Great Staff
Cons: Hard to find parking on Newbury St., Products expensive
Ahhhh yes, this place is WONDERFUL. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. My hair looks better than it has in a long time. :-)
Pros: Like a dream.
They overbook every single time. I realize that's great for the salon and the individual stylists (more $$$ per hour) but for the guest, that means you pay a ton of money to sit around in a shampoo chair for half and hour watching your stylist cut someone else's hair. Sorry, but that's inconsiderate. Then of course the stylist seems to be running out of energy by the time you take your seat, so you get a less-than-stellar haircut. I don't intend to go back, despite several years of commitment to my stylist.
Pros: friendly enough, professional
Cons: wait time!!!!!!!!!
after years of going from stylist to stylist i have finally found "the one". this place is great. i have been to other salons on newbury st. and aside from being expensive, they are cold and uptight. MH is not like that at all. the staff is nice and my cut amazing but the most amazing thing is the price...very reasonable! i get complimets form everyone. i highly remommend them.
Pros: talent, price, knowleable and friendly staff
Cons: parking
I got a really mediocre haircut. You'd think an "award winning senior stylist" would have really done a great job, but I've been struggling with this haircut since I had it done 3 weeks ago. My layers are still very heavy looking and it is really not shaped to my face at all. It's not flattering and I DEFINITELY have not gotten any compliments! None of my natural wave came out, it just looks heavy messy and square. I left the salon saying I liked it however, because they had it all flatironed and I couldn't see the problems with it. When I let it airdry the next day it looked so awful, I called the salon about it..The receptionist seemed defensive and impatient, which made me feel so uncomfortable about coming back.
I've travelled all over and had great haircuts in nyc, san francisco, new orleans, l.a., seattle...This was definitely the worst quality "salon" haircut I've ever had. I'm really disappointed, I was very excited to try this place.
Oh, they DID say I could come back for a fix up, but it is so hard to park down there, and I felt uncomfortable, plus I worried I might even look worse after a second cut.
One thing staff should think about...The day of my appointment, my schedule opened up and I called to see if it was possible to come in earlier which they said was fine. But when I got there I overheard my stylist and the receptionist talking about how she hadnt had a break to eat all day. I would so much have rather waited around for my original later appointment time so my stylist could eat and rest. Maybe she would have made more of an effort on my hair and done some detail work. She seemed really distracted and worn out. Its only human, people need to refuel, maybe you shouldn't schedule so many appointments like that.
Pros: the shampoo was amazing
Cons: typical, not unique
i got the best haircut i've ever had from christina here around christmas time. I went back this spring, and the cut wasn't exactly what I wanted. Chirstina re-did it a couple of weeks later, on the house, until I was satisfied, and I LOVE IT. Definitely a great experience, and I really appreciated how my happiness with my hair is always her main priority. THANK YOU CHRISTINA!
I love this place. Jeremy cuts my hair and I am so happy with the results every time! The salon was recently redecorated (last year I think) and it is so beautiful. Like a sexy NYC hotel lobby. Very different that the cold modern looking waiting areas in most hair salons. Thanks Jeremy for an excellent haircut!
Pros: Atmosphere, Stylists
Cons: parking
I just want to say that I have tried more hair stylists than you can ever imagine over the years and have NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER been satisfied. That is until I tried Yesi at Salon Marc Harris. She gave me the cut and highlights that I have been dreaming about forever. I have received nothing but compliments since I started having my hair done by her. She is sweet, friendly and willing to listen to how you want your hair to look.
Everyone there is friendly and wonderful, from the front desk staff to the people who wash your hair. The head massage is just the best!
Pros: Reasonably Priced, Friendly Staff, Talented Stylists
Cons: None
