Judy must be a personal friend of Mike's because this is the worst place I've ever brought my car to.
I brought my car in one day because it wasn't starting, $1,200 later he replaced the gas pump and told me that was the issue. The next day after filling my gas tank up my car smelled like gas, the smell wouldn't go away so I brought it back in. He looked at it and told me I must have "overfilled my gas tank'. Never in my life have I done this so I was pretty sure that wasn't the case. He didn't charge me anything though. I brought it back in the following week because after I filled up again it still smelled like gas. This time he told me I had a gas leak because my tank was rusty. The issue with my car not starting was still not resolved, the reason I went in to begin with. I bring it back in and he tells me its now a spark issue with the cooling temp sensor. Another $150 to fix the same problem I went in with, he told me it just happened to be another problem.

BEWARE!!! I went in for an inspection sticker..he would not pass my car. He said the tire rods were loose and I needed a couple of other things done to my car in order to pass inspection. Something in my gut told me not to trust this guy.. I took my rejected sticker and left. Come to find out my car is now at my regular mechanic and there is nothing wrong with my car....always listen to your gut!!!!
im amaized to see all these negative posts for this location. Mike to start with is amaizing, and his guys do greaT work. I would not bring my car anywhere else. Ever since i got my car i have only gone to them who have kept it very well maintained aside from my pocrastnation to do things on a timely manner. As to prices... i have always paid MUCH less or exactly what i expected. Perhaps people need to realize that if they feel they are paying to much ...your paying for good service!! stop being cheap and attacking Mike's Shop because your car dyed on you its bound to happen. Ifyour car is in such poor shape that you cant drive it to your choice of shop or machanic im sure something is seriously wrong with it and that is bound to cost you money. The reason why your cars are dying on you is probably because the other places your going are doing temp fixes, poor work, or cheap/no good pieces.
In response to the Volvo review. its none of my business but three things you need to take in consideration is
1. 1999 Volvo with only 60,000 is still a teN year old car.
2. volvo peices are much more expensive than the average car!
3. why do you only see wealthy old ppl rocking Volvos? Cuz they are priceeeee to maintain.
I get oil changes there, brake changes, inspections and they are always consistant. im sorry ya'll feel like that. I am so greatful with them and came to show appreciation and was shock. Maybe if ya'll had encounteres or worked with the shop prior to being overwhelmed with an emergency fix up you would have a much better review.
I'D TOTALLY RECCOMEND MIKES SHOP!
My car recently broke down in South Boston and I managed to keep it running long enough to crawl to the nearest garage, which happened to be 'Mike's Auto Repair' at 150 West Broadway. Cue the 'Jaws' music. Seriously. I really got a bad sense about the place, that their work is incompetent at best, and dishonest at worst. Then I found the other reviews here and at 'yelp'. Yikes!
Mike insisted the brakes on my car needed repair, though they'd been serviced within the year at another shop widely recognized for being fair and competent. Mike charged me nearly $1,200 for parts and labor, and showed me the diagnostic to justify them. Afterward, my car was still not running properly, and the 'service engine soon' light was still on. It seems a competent diagnostic should have been able to clearly diagnose what was required to repair the car. The list of items I was billed for were not legible on the invoice, which seems inexcusable in today's competitive market. I later showed the invoice to another mechanic, who couldn't decipher it either. I have no confidence that the price of the parts he charged for was fair or if they were even installed, or if the amount he charged for labor was accurate. Mike told me to bring my car back to him on another day. After I did, he told me he 'tried and tried' but could not resolve the problem. Mike told me "the car will run, but it would not pass an inspection with the 'service engine soon' light still on". I plead with Mike that I could not afford to spend more money on it at that time, and to his credit, he had gotten my car running (still badly) and gave me my car back without further charges after a second day of trying adjust the idle speed. So he gets one 'star' for that. I am considering contacting News 5 to inquire about an investigation at: 'http://www.thebostonchannel.com/investigative/index.html' and I would encourage others to consider doing the same.
All of the reviews listed below all have a common theme, shady business practices. I brought my girlfriends car into Mike's shop because he is a few blocks from my home. He said he would look at it and get back to me with a diagnosis. He called an hour later and said the shifter cable needed to be fixed and it would cost around $500 (part/labor). I said go for it. Received another call an hour later, the shifter is only going to work 80% because it needs another part which will cost another $200. I said forget it, just make it work 80%. Received another call an hour later, the transmission needs to be replaced. I walked down to see him face to face. He said it would cost around $1200 to $1300. Meanwhile, he would never look me in the eye. The car remained there for 2 days until we made a decision. In that time, I saw Mike each day, and every time I saw him the price would change, and the parts that needed to be fixed. I asked for a work order and to put in writing what he would be doing to the car and how much it would cost. He said he could not do that, and made up some foolish excuse.
After long debate and thankfully listening to our guts, we had the car towed to a dealership nearby. They received the car at 1pm, the car was fixed by 5pm. The transmission was perfectly fine. All they needed to do was replace the shifter cable. We were charged $350. Unfortunately we had to pay Mr. Mike $100 for his "Services", but I feel very lucky to have gotten out when we did.
Mark my words, this person will take full advantage of you.
My niece was buying my 99 Volvo because I had just bought a new car so I took it to Mike's Auto for an inspection sticker. I was told that the car didn't pass inspection for safety reasons. Mike rattled off a number of items that needed to be fixed as well as the fact the car needed new tires and would then need to be aligned following the tire replacements. As this was not my regular mechanic I was hesitant to proceed with the work but I foolishly agreed and the work started since I wanted to ensure my niece had a safe vehicle. The car only had 60,000 miles on it so I believed that it was worth the investment. In the end the overall cost of the work was $2800. My niece just brought the vehicle to our regular mechanic to have the A/C recharged and when he drove it he was more concerned about a noise in the wheels. My niece explained that a lot of work was done last fall including new tires and when he looked at the invoices he examined the car and said that he could guarantee that 95% of what was stated was never done.
Complete scam artists. Go in there for an inspection sticker, and it is guaranteed that you'll need X, Y, Z in order to pass. Contact the Better Busniess Bureau.
If you want a good mechanic, stick with Eurpoean Motor Sports, on L Street, near the corner of L and East Broadway (no, you don't need a European car to go in there.)
If there were a place that deserved an undercover camera crew for an expose on corrupt repair shops this is it.
I brought my car in for an oil change to support a local business and ended up w/over 700.00 in charges. In so many words, they are absolute rip-off artists. Would not show me the parts replaced, etc. I then had to have all the work re-done at a car dealership that could not believe the job that was done on the brakes as it was so dangerous.
Please do not give these guys business. They benefit from an up and coming location in South Boston and it kills me that that will keep them in business.
This guy is a complete fraud. I brought my car in for a State Inspection yesterday and without even jacking the car up, he's telling me I have to replace the wheel bearings. I had to come up with a long story to get out of him making me give him "$250 for one part, $150 for another part, at least 2 hours of labor" to get my $29 back for the inspection. I took my car to another place in South Boston and a place in Saugus and both said I had no wheel bearing, brake, axel issues whatsoever. Stay away from this clown.
Weell i went in for an oil change, and a tuneup. Which usually costs around 30 or 40 dollars.. Somehow i ended up paying 800 for the tuneup and the oil change. He said he had to move something away from the motor,he gave me no details on what it was only the reciept for the bill.So if you want to get screwed big time GO TO MIKES AUTO,hell give you the biggests lube job youve ever had
Pros: he doesnt have any
Cons: Takes money with a smile
