Located in Inman Square, this laid back spot offers some of the finest grilled seafood and BBQ in the area. While the food is almost no-frills, the slightly above average cost translates into impeccably prepared simple food. Another sign of quality, Chris Schlesinger, the chef/owner, is almost always there.

Last time I went was for Bob Marley's birthday celebration. The regular menu was supplemented with a few Jamaican specialties like salt cod fritters, and a "ganja-smoked"-steak. The steak was, seriously, one of the best steaks I've had in Boston. The homemade hot sauce (real inner beauty) is outta control tasty, and will set your head on fire (try the wings). The best part is that everything on the plate is delicious. Leave no slaw untouched!

East Coast Grill, more than anything, is fun. And not cheesy fun, but awesome foodie fun. From the BBQ-shack meets funky diner meets upscale bar atmosphere to the pint-sized giant margaritas to the $13 "kitchen appreciation special" of 6 PBR tallboys destined for a cheering group of chefs, East Coast Grill delivers.

I've been here for both regular meals and last night for the infamous Hell Night, and in either case it's been really fun stuff. Hell night sees the restuarant all decked out with caution tape, the waitstaff clad in leather and bandanas, and the open kitchen filled with chefs wearing surgical masks. And it's not like you get the sense these people are grudgingly decking themselves out with "flair," as you might expect, but that everyone on staff there is really just out to have (and to show you) a good time with some great grub.

The food isn't superlative, but it's pretty damn good - I think the thing that stands out the most for me is the raw bar -- fresh, tasty oysters and clams, and great shrimp. If you go, check out the raw bar platter which is about the perfect size for a two-person app. Mmm..

Cons: busy, hard to pick surf vs. turf to eat!

This place is great i am always satisfied. They also have the best oysters around. It is crowded with yuppies, but I guess that is what happens when you serve such tasty food.

The food is consistently superlative, tasty without being too fancy, bold use of spice, always slightly on the edge.

What sends East Coast Grill over the top is the staff and the feeling of personal warmth in the restaurant.

I've eaten here a few times. The fish is great. The raw bar is awesome. I love fresh shell fish! It can get a bit noisy since it is so busy, but as long as you don't mind the noise, it is worth a try.

ok..lets start off with an apology if I happen to offend any poor souls who think they've been eating good foods all their lives. I'm a spoiled brat when it comes to eating. Maybe it's b/c of my culture or b/c i'm a food fanatic or b/c i'm just a plain picky eater...w/e.
Let's be on the bright side of thing for 2 seconds. I do admit the atmosphere and the service there are superb. But when I thought about my $80 spent for two people, I honestly careless if the atmosphere is good or the service is superb. I only care for the foods! The sole reason why I'm going out to eat.
Truth is...the only thing i came close to enjoying is this fried plaintain that came with the mahi mahi fish plate. Which is kinda sad for me since I can go down the street from my house and get fried plaintain at a hispanic restaurant.
Ok! let's see what else I got...a Vietnamese style fish and shrimp cake that taste just like the shrimp cake I ate at the chinese buffet earlier in the day. After that we got the "very spicy" ribs (i forgot all the name) and that was a disappointment. It tasted like a big giant strip of bacon. And "very spicy"? I don't think so..but then again i can eat habanero pepper for dessert. So that wasn't fair to try and match my expectation. Alrighty! the third dish is this 1/2 lb shrimp dish and that had got to be the saltiest thing I've tasted since i was at hampton beach tasting the salty sea water over the sumer. The forth dish is that mahi mahi fish plate.
So in conclusion... I will not personally go there again. If i want something similar i'd just go to apple bees and save a ton of money. I mean i don't mind spending the money (i am a certified high roller =) LOL), but to waste it on bad foods is my pet peeve. I hope you enjoy reading my review b/c i spoke from the bottom of my heart.

This Inman Square institution accomplishes the impossible. It specializes in seafood AND barbecue ? and does both very well. With its sky-blue walls, ?live? volcano mural and animal drink ornaments, this laid-back restaurant does not take itself too seriously. But owner Chris Schlesinger?s dazzling food is another matter entirely. A fine raw bar offers clams; oysters; crab claws; Old Bay seasoned peel-and-eat shrimp; and spicy shrimp cocktail. For seafood lovers, mouthwatering selections include the grilled jerk-rubbed salmon with banana-guava; grilled coriander-crusted swordfish; and white pepper-crusted tuna with spicy bok choy salad. If you have a taste for finger-licking barbecue, try the sliced Texas beef BBQ, the Missouri spareribs or the melt-in-your-mouth heap of shredded North Carolina pork BBQ. The place is also famous for its three-times-a-year ?Hell Nights,? where dishes are flavored with the ultimate hot sauce, Inner Beauty. The night features the nine alarm "Infamous Pasta From HELL,? which requires diners to sign a release form before ordering! For gourmet seafood and/or a mean barbecue in a relaxed environment, there is no better place than the East Coast Grill.

I went for brunch, orginally drawn by my pursuit of a good bloody mary in this town. The "make your own" approach was great, and I had one of the best bloody mary's I've had in boston. As far as the meal went, the food was novel, but average. The cornbread was good, but not very warm, the rib was well seasoned (great sauce) but tough, and so was the grilled avocado. The place was packed, but the wait staff was friendly and accommodating. The burrito that was on the special's menu was sold out - perhaps next time I'll get there earlier and give one of the popular dishes a shot.

3 dishes I tried were tasty but quite overpriced.
Bluefish fish 'n chips featured a 2" x 2" piece of fish on a mound of hot but very soggy french fries. Samon was good (a bit thin) as was the Calamari. Ribs were tough, not much meat.
We ordered the "Big Bowl of Seafood" and for $28, it was hardly well named. Te BIG bown, comprised 2 scalops, 2 shrimp and a couple modest sized pieces of fish. I honestly asked if we received the appetizer portion. sangria was a pitcher of Ice with watered down redwine and a few chunks of fruit as far as I could tell. we didn't even finish it, we ordered glasses of wain. Apon leaving, I was asked if everything was OK, and I said, 'will, since you asked, the 'big bowl of seafood wasn't particularly big. the hostes said 'Oh' in a concerned tone and got the manager. I repreated my observation to him and he just sort of shrugged and said 'ok' and walked off. (message read: there are other restaurants, don't come back here: OK, got it)

Decor still fun but a little tired (they might want to dust off the glass sculptures some time

It's an interesting dichotomy - you walk into this place and you get the idea of a kind of funky seafoody BBQ joint. Cool, looks like fun! Then, you take a seat and the menu continues this funky vibe - clever wordplays, nifty graphics. All until you get to the prices! Most of the entrees are in the $25 range, which doesn't fit the atmosphere of the place. And the food is decent, but nothing out of this world and I don't think the prices are warranted for the quality. It's worth a shot, but I wasn't overly impressed the two times I've been there.

Note: Across the street is a lot specifically for this place, the sign reads "Lot closes at 11pm. Don't get yo car locked in. Thanks Bro." Sweet!

They mostly do fish and bbq and they do it well. I have been there for the Sunday Brunch. It's very busy and a bit of a wait because it's a rather small restaurant, but the wait is worth it. The food is very good and the servers offer great recommendations if it's your first time there. They are also one of the few restaurants in Cambridge with a parking lot.

We went to East Coast Grill for a birthday and were not disappointed. The food was delicious, our server was prompt and helpful, and it was the only restaurant where I felt obliged to order dessert because it was bound to be incredible based on our dinner experiance.

Parking was fine- we were able to get a metered spot right next to the restaurant. We were seated immediately but a note of warning- we were a party of two but the wait for larger tables spilled into the bar area.

Due to the cost of the meals, East Coast Grill will remain for special occasions only, but is #1 in my book.

East Coast Grill is known for their incredible raw bar, but don't forget about their equally as good bbq options. The food is incredibly fresh and beautifully displayed. Prices are very reasonable. Its a local favorite that has been around for at least 20 years!

I have never written a review for citysearch but felt compelled to after the most outstanding meal of my entire 3 years in Boston at East Coast Grill (1st time there as well). I had the catch of the day (which apparently was just caught by the owner himself) with greens and eggplant that were all prepared in a way that just blew me out of the way. I also was astounded by the portions-usually good food like this leaves you hungry when you leave-I could barely finish my plate. I have eaten at all of the big seafood establishments in Boston and while the fish might be decent at other place (not even close to approaching this meal), you can forget the sides tasting as inventive and fresh as they did here.

The East Coast Grill is one of the best restaurants in Boston, without question. The ambience is low-key (you can wear jeans) and the food is truly outstanding. I almost always get tuna or salmon, but I hear the BBQ is excellent, as well. Drinks are fabulous, servers are knowledgable and friendly, it's a great place to meet friends. The only drawback is that everybody knows how good it is, so there can be *really* long waits.

I was quite impressed by the variety of food at East Coast Grill. The fish I tasted (salmon, tuna, raw tuna, oysters, mahi mahi) was all very good. I recommend the raw tuna appetizer. For my main course I had the barbecue trio that included brisket, pulled pork and ribs. I was impressed that a place with such good fish could have such amazing barbecue. All of the food was flavored well but at the same time differently. The service was amazing. Our waiter knew every part of the menu by heart...which is quite an accomplishment because of the complexity of all of the dishes. Lastly, ECG is a great value. It's around 30 a person without drinks.

An excellent brunch spot! The food is very flavorful. They have a make-your-own-Bloody-Mary bar, and, as I learned, the Bloody Mary is refillable "in terms of tomato juice, but not in terms of vodka". I had horseradish and a pinch of curry in mine. Everyone liked the nachos presentation, people commented it was a very healthy one. I liked the fried plantains and the special of the day, lemon fish cakes. Tamales, which are cornmeal wraps, were very dry and had too few raisins. The wait on a Sunday around 12 was not that bad, not more than half an hour.

My wife and I recently spent 5 days in Boston on a first visit. Overall, the dining experiences there were very good. However, the East Coast Grill stood out as especially fine. After a long day sightseeing we were looking for a nice, but casual restaurant. My wife had a sumptuous shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. Ordering only 3 oysters on the half shell, I knew after the first one that not ordering 6 (or more) was a mistake. In addition to cocktail and horseradish sauces, another sauce was included that added a unique dimension. For entrees we had the tuna which was cooked to perfection and our specificationhardly at alland scallops wrapped in bacon. Both dishes were incredibly fresh, flavorful and well-prepared. The scallops were accompanied by French fried onions, a perfect compliment. Our server, Jess, suggested a California Sauvignon Blanc with our meal choices that was spot on. Throughout the meal Jess was especially attentive, but never intrusive. Also, throughout the meal the manager, Rebecca, an obvious presence on the floor, ensured all was in order at every table and not perfunctorily. Both Jess and Rebecca recommended the flan and chocolate pecan pie as house specialties. After indulging in both, we agree. I dont recall having mentioned that this was an anniversary trip. However, Rebecca delighted us each with a glass of 10-year-old port on the house. This experience was, without doubt, one of the best dining experiences we have shared in our 16 years together. We look forward to many return trips to the Boston area and East Coast Grill specifically.

The menu is lots of fun, with combinations that you'd never expect. Even better, everything just seems to "go" really well. The flavors of the featured item and the sides mesh together to create a wonderful eating experience. The staff works hard to make you happy as well. One of the best restaurants in Boston.

My husband and I ate at East Coast Grill a couple of months ago while on spring break, and it was by far some of the best food we ate on our trip. Our server was very friendly, attentive, and helpful, the ambience was funky and fun, and the food - wow! The shrimp cocktail was excellent, and the blackened grouper (one of the specials) was spicy and delicious. Can't recommend this place enough!!

Go try this place! It has fantastic food that has never disappointed. The shrimp, tuna, swordfish, crab legs, ribs are all excellent. They make good martinis (lots of different types) and sangria.

When I have out of town friends or clients visiting, they always mention wanting seafood. In every instance, I point them to East Coast Grill and they love it! It's a unique neighborhood restaurant and really has a great Cambridge vibe.

"Where can we go that's fun?" Whenever people ask me this, I take them to East Coast Grill and they fall in love. The joint is jumpin and the food is phenomenal. The seafood is very fresh and if you like raw oysters, ECG's selection is phenomenal you always get to try at least 3 different types. The BBQ may not be the best in Boston (that's Blue Ribbon), but it is very tasty, tender & juicy. The bartender mixes some phenomenal drinks (margaritas & mojitos especially) but the Martini from Hell is not for the faint of heart -- try it with the Appetizer from Hell (changes seasonally) for a literally killer combo!

If youre looking for a quiet romantic evening, look elsewhere. But if youre looking for a fun time, ECG is where its at. Yes, the wait can be long, but it is totally worth it.

Cons: no reservations, long waits for tables, parking can be tough

East Coast Grille is has become one of my top 10 favorite places to go when I want to eat an excellent meal, have great time, and leave with a feeling of getting my $$ worth. I love its interior, and the staff is efficient and friendly. Not only does East Coast Grill know costumer service, its menu is diverse and excellent. I must recommend the wet bones as an appetizer, and all their fish entrées.

The wait was long, and the food was average. I heard this restaurant was incredible, but I left feeling unfulfilled. The service was good though even though it was very busy.

My girlfriend and I decided to give this restraunt a try because our concierge recommended it. We showed up at 7:00 on a saturday and was told it would be an hour wait for a table. We decided to eat at the bar and had the best time. The food was incredible (especially the tuna taco and mahi mahi) and our bartender (Dan) made the best drinks we have ever had (Mojitos). He made us feel right at home despite it being very very busy. He some how found a way to work and talk with us at the same time. Without a doubt the friendliess bartender I have ever met. I give this restraunt/bar 2 thumbs up.

This is a fun restaurant, with a vibrant atmosphere and delicious food. It is versatile, appealing to people of all ages. I highly recommend the raw bar, especially the French Connection - an appetizer of oysters topped with sausage. Hell Nights, which occur once in the fall and once in the spring, are a set of 3 nights during which EXTREMELY spicy food is served. They are so fun, and have achieved cult status in Cambridge. Parking can be difficult - they do have a small lot across the street where restaurant patrons can park for $5.

SUCH good seafood! We got there right before closing and they were still soooo nice even though I'm sure they all wanted to go home. And the FOOD! It was just phenomenal. Casual atmosphere, but prices are a little high. Treat yourself, though. It was well worth it!

The raw tuna appetizer special was spectacularly wonderful. The fried oysters appetizer was also good. The pulled pork BBQ was decently authentic if you remember that nobody in New England makes cornbread properly. However, there was a long wait, the service was slow, and the grilled shrimp were overcooked or had sat around waiting too long, so they were really disappointing given the price. The Asian noodles were way too salty. Overall, the experience didn't live up to those wonderful appetizers.

The service was great, perfect amount of background noise, open-kitchen so could watch the cooks do their thing, and the vegetable plate is amazing (all seasonal veggies and i have leftovers for 3 days).

Come on, ECG is in a class by itself. You get CREATIVE City BBQ, not just the country BBQ. You get service at ECG, what kind of service do you get from Blue Ribbon? I love Blue Ribbon, and every BBQ place around, but it is a take-out place.

For a grill that attempts to put forth the best of the Atlantic, it's slighlty disappointing that the best thing on the menu is steak. I'd avoid it unless Ole and Jae's are packed. It does do a good job of accomodating families.

This place was great, the seafood was better than the meals I had on Cape Cod. We sat in the volcano room, it had a festive and relaxed atmosphere. The service was quick and polite.

Consistency is the name of the game at ECG. I 'm a seafood fan and have had a pleasant experience on every visit. This is one place where they are not shy about seasoning the food! I've brought friends there with whom ECG now ranks in their top choices of restaurants. Furthermore, I've always found the service to be great, no pretense!

As others have said, get there early b/c they fill up quickly. Have also tried their Westport (MA) restaurant--Back Eddy's--great atmosphere & servce, but can't touch ECG's menu!

Even without a reservation, they were attentive and gave us a nice booth. The place was a bit noisy and crowded on a Tuesday evening. Even though the waiter was hard to understand, and the food was slow inbetween courses, the food presentation and quality was worth it.

Never had a bad meal here & will keep returning!

Nice Bloody Mary Bar for brunch. French Toast is great.

If you like spicy foods, you'll love it here. Though the love of fire is not required :)

If you sit near kitchen/grill, etc... they give you free tastes of food, for suffering next to the heat, though in winter its a plus.

Drinks are great & come with cute plastic colored giraffes, mermaids & monkeys.

The special treat is the Polynesian Room, the Pu Pu Platter should not be missed!

East Coast Grill is my favorite restaurant. Not only have I never had a bad meal here in over 30 visits, I have never had a meal here that was less than spectacular. The fish is always fresh, always cooked perfectly, and the bold flavors scream from the plate no matter what the dish. The accompanying vegetables and other sides on the plate are not just obligatory filler; they scream with bold flavors of their own. The food is creative and sophisticated, while the atmosphere is fun and casual. The service is solid and friendly. ECG renowned for both seafood and barbecue; I recommend ordering the mahi mahi or one of the specials, with 1 or 2 ribs as a side dish. I give this restaurant my highest recommendation.

I like to think of myself as a relative gourmet having eaten well the world over. Quite simply, this is one of the most ecclectic, and best restauraunts to be found anywhere. Where else does, suberb steaks, transcendent BBQ, and sublime seafood collide on the same menu? Spicy Food fans- DO NOT MISS THE NEXT SCHEDULED 'HELL NIGHT' (your endorphins will thank me)
