When Louis Boston expanded into the old Museum if National History building and wanted to include a full service salon, Mario was the first person they called. In 1992 Mario opened his second Salon Mario Russo in Louis Boston. Louis is the east coast specialty store for exclusive high end fashion and the Mario Russo team is the in-house hair, body and beauty purveyor.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Considered by many to be the best hair salon in town, Mario Russo caters to Boston's power crowd. The chic salon fits in with its upscale neighbors--the Ritz, Cartier and Akris. The services are fairly basic, from highlights to straightening. They do branch out to makeup and nails however--so it's a good spot to get ready before a night on the town.

Key Points

  • Designer Stylists
  • Hair Extensions
  • Award Winning Colorists

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - While a haircut with Mario himself is probably the priciest cut in town, you can also get a reasonably priced cut from a more novice stylist.
  2. The Extras - Mario Russo is also one of the few local salons that gets accolades in national magazines such as Vogue and W.

Like this place.. reminds me of LA salons

by suri s.

This salon is small but great. I have been a few times for color and blowouts. Everyone is friendly, prices are as expected on the higher end. Marisa has an ease with color and gives you what you ask for. The shampoo room is really the only drawback--its tiny and essentially part of the stock room. There is a valet at Louis and the shopping is of course tremendous.

Amanda Johnson - Best Colorist in Boston!!!!!

by Lemansky

I've been going to Amanda for years now and will certainly be a lifelong client. Amanda has worked wonders on my hair, making me look great as both a blond and a brunette - which is not easy to do. Over the years she has flawlessly transitioned my hair back and forth at my every whim. She knows how to give her clients exactly what they want and can make the color subtle, natural, or a drastic change if you please. She is sweet and intelligent and clearly knows her stuff. Amanda also recommends the best product for your hair, without trying to oversell you. I've sent numerous friends to Amanda that all still continue to see her. I honestly can rave about her enough and recommend her services to anyone out there who wants a fabulous color!

Pros: You'll come out looking gorgeous.

Hip Salon with friendly and attentive staff

by IrishTemper

While I would love to have my hair done by Mario himself, my pockets do not reach so deep. I am not very good at scheduling ahead of time and usually just call to see if anyone is available on the day I feel desperate for a good cut. I have no fear doing this becuase everyone is so talented at Mario Russo and they always listen to what I want.

Pros: Great Cuts and Styles

Lori O'Brien and Amanda Johnson

by Starznpeachz2

Last May, after having a long conversation with Lori, I decided to get extensions to make my hair longer and fuller. Lori matched the color so perfectly and blended the hair so well, no one could tell I had extensions in! And now, almost one year later, I am still getting them done! She does an amazing job, each time we change it up, it gets better and better! It's more than worth the trip from Florida!! I love Lori and will never let anyone else other than her and Amanda touch my hair!!! Amanda Johnson takes care of my color and she is a god send! The color always come out so beautiful and shiny. Amanda makes the best recommendations for color and also for hair care products. Since I started using the Kerastace she recommneded, my hair has transformed to beautiful silky shiny hair!! I will never go anywhere else!

best haircolor in boston

by brookecort1

I have struggled for many years trying to find the right person to make my dark brown hair have natural blonde highlights. I finally found the right person in Heather. My hair looks amazing. The color is very natural but blonde enough. There is no brassiness or orangy tones at all. She is definitely the BEST. I also had my haircut with Roseanna and it looks great. Long layers yet can still pull back in a ponytail if you want to. I never write reviews but I really felt compelled too. it is worth every penny!!!! Will never go anywhere else. They are also very nice.

Lori O'Brien to the Thinning Hair Rescue!

by Audioslaver

Yes, it is a dirty little secret that women don't share; not all of us keep a full mane of hair into our 40s. There is hope and it is named Lori O'Brien of Mario Russo! Lori is an expert in hair extensions, using only the best product available --Great Lengths. Not only does the hair blend easily with my own, it is easy to treat and doesn't damage what little hair I have left. Lori works with an amazing colorist to match colors (Heather at MR) and then gives the hair an expert cut. The extensions last four months and I can do everything with them in! I feel ten years younger and more confident. Lori is gentle (the process takes several hours) and is a wonderful person to boot. Surprisingly, the atmosphere at this Newbury Street salon is very relaxed and accommodating. Don't live with thinning hair; go see Lori as soon as you can!!!!!!

Pros: The only place in Boston to do these type of hair extensions

Sal is the best!

by Erin810

After relocating from NYC last year, I wasn't sure that Boston salons would be up to par. Sal at Salon Mario Russo totally proved me wrong--best haircut I've ever had and soo handsome to boot. He is a wizard with my difficult curly hair and Amanda is great for natural-looking glossy highlights. Cozy, intimate salon, great conversation and most of all a talented staff.

Pros: talented staff, parking

Best Color in Boston and Wedding hair too!

by nicole2

I have been having my hair colored by Heather for years. Now there is no one else I will go to. She is sweet, friendly and delivers the best color I have ever had. Not to mention she colors many "in-town" celebrities in Boston. I have brown hair and she gives me the best blonde highlights I have ever had. If you want red hair, i have also heard she does the "best red in boston". People are always asking me where I get my hair done. So it was a no-brainer when I got married in 2006, where to get my hair styled too. I had Kent style my hair and he did a fantastic job. He also did an amazing job on my maid of honor's hair. Kent took time to consult with me, then took extra time to straighten my naturally curly hair (most salons won't do that when doing an updo) to make the most gorgeous up-do i have ever seen. I wanted a very mature, classic look (not prom hair) and both of our styles looked great. Kent even used a braid extension to wrap around my Maid of Honor's bun which looked flawless and completely natural. My maid of honor could not believe how much time he gave us. We didn't feel rushed at all. My only "con" with Mario Russo is the price. It is expensive, but I would rather spend money on quality then less money on a lowsy job. I only get my hair colored there on a regular basis because i can't afford a cut too. But if you see Heather, i gaurantee you will love it.

Pros: Best color and style

Cons: Pricey, no parking

Billy at Mario Russo

by curlyhairmeticulas

Billy was recommended for curly hair. I thought he wasn't that great. My hair was a little uneven and I found myself (which I dread) snipping pieces that were a little to long.

Cons: Newbury St. location felt congested w/ atmosphere to match, hair dresseer seemed a little unkempt

Best Salon

by juror8

Mario Russo's salon is the best ! Mario really understands women and gives you a sophisticated, secure look that exactly matches one's lifestyle and the individualized attention is matched by his excellent staff. He has created an unmatched method of hair "infusion" that not only looks great in the salon but is easily maintained at home!

Pros: Parking available, cozy salon, great for people watching

Great Stylist, Loved my hair

by newburydan

I just got my hair cut this morning at the Berkeley address with Lori and she did a great job. My hair is straight and very thick and she took the time to dry it properly and to reshape it after it had been blown. It's one of the best cuts I've had since I moved here from New York five years ago. I wanted to tell her boss she did a fabulous job, but was instead asked to give her kudos here. She was awesome; great personality, great energy, very talented. It's taken me a long time to find a stylist who understands my hair. I think she's it.

Pros: Parking and excellent customer service

Cons: compact salon

Best cut and color I've had in a long time!

by jessier88

Since I moved to Boston 3 years ago I've been in search of a great colorist and stylist. I finally found both at Mario Russo's Salon. Heather, my colorist, took the time to consult with me about what I wanted and then delivered! The color was so natural and exactly what I was looking for. After Heather was fone, Laurie cut my hair. I brought in an old photo of myself and Laurie reproduced the cut perfectly. This salon was highly recommended by a number of friends. I'm so glad I followed their advice.

Pros: great stylists, valet parking

Cons: expensive

Socialite

by nicolebu

ario Russo salon is definitely not worth the buzz! You would expect to receive an excellent job for the price they charge, but what the hairdresser did in my hair was really dissapointing. Besides, the staff is not friendly at all. The hairdresser didnt even introduce herself to me and the two girls who answer the phones and take your payment make you feel really uncomfortable. Would a little niceness and maybe a smile cost an extra $100 bucks? If you want people to come back, be a little bit nice next time!

Pros: Good parking, Not crowded

Cons: , Very impolite staff

Madame

by keldo

$190 for a mediocre highlight - an additional $40 for a gloss I did not ask for and no blow drying service left me leaving Louis of Boston looking like a drowned mousy rat. Thanks so much! Next time I will take my $230 and go to Supercuts, have dinner at Anthony's Pier 4, buy a round of drinks at Grill 23 and come out looking and feeling great. Thanks but no freakin thanks to Mario Russo Salon. Hasta la vista!

Cons: , no blowdrying, poor attitude

Arrogant and pathetic... AVOID

by istreich

Who do they believe they are. Avoid this place whatever happens. Staff is ignoring customers, is arrogant and prices are ridiculously expensive for the work they do.
They should back to the definition of service and remember who the customer is!
And remember that if you cancel an appointment, they will charge you for it: these guys are thieves!

Cons: Arrogant, Poor service, Expensive

great cuts and people watching

by cambridgecritic

They cut well but the back room where they wash your hair isn't very nice. It's a crowded room where all the supplies are out and the hairdressers are eating lunch right in front of you.
