"On a street famous for funk, this restaurant is like a hit of pure oxygen," raves Boston Magazine about JP Seafood Cafe, a treasure of Jamaica Plain's burgeoning dining scene. "Renowned for its "wonderfully fresh sushi" (Zagat Survey) and Korean-Japanese entrees that are "as pleasing to the eye as [they are] delicious" (The Phantom Gourmet), JP Seafood Cafe has cultivated a devoted following since its opening in the spring of 1996. Diners flock here to savor elegantly appointed sushi boats, sizzling platters of delicately seasoned fish fillets, and a delectable array of vegetarian dishes served in spirited surroundings. A gracious and attentive staff is at your service to assist in navigating the extensive menu and to recommend the perfect selection from the many varieties of sake, plum wine, Pacific Rim beer and domestic and imported wine available.

The sushi is so delicious. I came here with a friend and we shared a platter. It was so worth it. In addition, the servers are great, and the prices are very reasonable. This place is very clean and many people come to dine.

Great Food
by feliciadz
If your looking for good sushi and good Japanese food this is the place to go. After years of trying to find "proper" Japanese food we finally found it at JP Seafood. They also serve some terrific Korean dishes like Japchae & Gyoza( and you can have that as beef or vegetable!) The maki is always fresh and yummy!!! Have even ventured into sashimi which I must say is fresh and delectable here not chewy like some other places we've been. If your a vegetarian there are plenty of choices on the menu for you & if you love fish this is better than Legal's! The staff always serve you with a smile and get the food to you nice and hot. If your in JP you have to come here to eat!
Pros: good fast service, fresh made to order food
Cons: busy

clear your sinuses
by akj1217
Tonight we went to JP Seafood and FOR THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW ordered a SPICY TUNA HANDROLL where the spice was OFF THE CHARTS. NOT GOOD!!!! NOT GOOD!!! We were drooling and our mouths were ON FIRE for a good half hour. AND obviously we could not even finish it. We LOVE sushi. We love spicy hot food.....but this is unfair to customers and a bad order. DO NOT GET IT. And actually think twice about going to this restaurant. The service is awful and the ambiance is totally lacking.
Cons: TOOOOOOO MUCH SPICE IN THE SPICY TUNA HANDROLL

Kick-ass Sushi
by opensashime
The Omakase here is the best!!!!!! Great friendly Sushi Chefs, and servers. I also love their grilled fish dinners and Bibimbops. A Must Try: Scallion Pancake! YUMMMMM.. It's too bad that I don't live nearby, I would come here everyday.
Pros: Great foods, service, and energy
Cons: This is a popular restaurant, so be expected to wait, especially on weekend nights.

Have I become more discriminating, or have they just stopped trying?
by weeblackscottie
Oh how I used to love this place!!!
But, geez....now that I'm a local and can't resist its convenience (location, location, location) I find that the food just isn't that great. In particular I'm referring to the maki/sushi....often the rice seems overly sour and always too firm (sitting too long is my best guess). In addition I've yet to order a "shrimp maki" where the shrimp feels fresh...always the tempura is chewy and cool (as opposed to hot and crunchy. In short, I think it would be great if J P Seafood had some local competition.....I'd love to love the place again!!!
Pros: Super nice staff, they deliver....very gay friendly!
Cons: Stale maki

Everyone knows your name + great food
by dawneliz
If you are a regular here, they will get to know you quickly, know what you like and dislike, and bend over backwards for you (within reason!). The food is always good (the lunch box is a real treat); the bibimbop is the best I've had in the Boston area, and the scallion pancake is to die for. Keep an eye out for their maki specials (Godzilla and Shocking...awesome!). It can be a bit hectic during the summer, especially towards the end of the week, so patience (or going there prior to being murderously hungry) is advised. They are reasonably priced (haven't raised their prices in 5 years!) and a great spot for a low-key dinner. Definitely try the Mochi ice cream.
Pros: great food, great smiles
Cons: sometimes loud, sometimes slow/long wait

JP needs another Sushi restaurant!
by meredith4444
As a JP resident I have seen the quality of this place decline over the years. Over time, the quality of the sushi has gone down and the prices have gone up. A lot of the sushi that I have gotten is overpriced and the portions and pieces of sushi are small. Some of the sushi tastes like it has been refrigerated and not fresh. Unfortunately, this is the only sushi place in JP and thus, unless you are willing to travel, this is the only place to get sushi. This is why there is usually a wait for a table during the weekends.
The place is small and a bit cramped, tables are right next to one another (with in arms reach). And the service is average.
Cons: expensive

A Nice Neighborhood Find
by jillinboston
Located conveniently on Centre Street, JP Seafood has a huge menu, diverse in selection. From sushi to bimbibop, there is definitely something for everyone. The teriyaki dishes arrive at the table sizzling and include miso soup, rice and veggies for 12.95. The salmon looked great too. I would go back many times and try other dishes. The service is friendly if not as attentive as other restaurants, but more than adequate.
Pros: location, price, friendly service

Great for Vegetarians
by bcorr
As a vegetarian, I've often found sushi restaurants not that great. However, this one has lots of great options for those who don't eat fish. Because this is a combination of Korean and Japanese cuisines, there is a much greater variety than most sushi restaurants. The lunch menu is a good deal -- especially the "lunch boxes" (also called "bento boxes at some places). The service is friendly, polite, and prompt, and the food is very fresh and high quality. A definite "must do" if you're visiting Jamaica Plain -- and there's a great ice cream place next door if you're looking for dessert afterwards!
Pros: Fresh fish & veggies, Vegetarian-friendly, Great lunch menu

sushi yes please
by francod47
This is a hidden gem , the food is great. Fresh, tastey, and realitively inexpensive. The atmosphere is a little hip and the room is comfortable. You are greeted with a smile and treated well for the whole meal.

The Bibimbab is very good, so is the Bul-go-ki! Order take-out if you don't feel like waiting in line for a table.

Super Sushi
by paughjj
A wonderful, friendly local restaurant. THe outside makes it look like a Summer Shack or equally pain-in-the-ass fish-in-you-face restaurant. But its not. They've got a great sushi bar and a wonderful menu. I highly recommend it.
Pros: Wonderful Sushi, They have sushi boats, Big Bottles of Kirin
