I've worked for Newbury Comics for 5 years. They hire people based upon their personal style/attractiveness and almost nothing else. They want everyone's money, but they also want really really hip people to feel really really hip while they are shopping there . . . . it's very weird, like they can't decide what kind of company they want to be anymore.

I ordered a CD from Newbury via Amazon.com. The CD mailed quickly and arrived quicker -- but it wasn't the CD I ordered. When I wrote them, they told me they couldn't get the CD I'd ordered and to 'throw away' the one they sent...then I checked that one and it's $1.25 via Amazon...no wonder they said 'throw it away'...
My guess is that they never had the one I wanted to begin with...bizarre! I've never had a single problem with an Amazon vendor before, but you can bet I won't use Newbury again(and I buy LOTS of CDs!!).

As a comic book and music fan, the place has a great selection of rare finds and classics. They happen to also have some great deals occasionally. My advice is to only bring about $30 to the store, otherwise you might spend a whole month's paycheck.

I have found the staff at this particular Newbury Comics store is rather snobby. They seem to think they know everything about music. Funny that once I got into more obscure, independent music I found that the selection of cd's is merely okay compared to other independent music stores. There are lots of tchotchkes which make for good gifts for young teenagers. The prices are generally higher than the suburban locations due to the Newbury Street location. The selection of DVDs is pretty good but buying through newburycomics.com is often cheaper, even with the cost of shipping. This particular location also has a selection of foreign editions of magazines like Vogue and Elle. Overall, I really do not like this store.
PROS:
CONS: Elitist hipster staff, tepid selection

As other reviewers have pointed out, Newbury Comics is not just for Comics. It's actually dominated by music. I've had success finding a lot of less mainstream, jam band CDs here, stuff that I probably wouldn't find at a Sam Goody. Of course, if you do want comics, they have tons of that too.
Their location in the heart of Newbury Street makes them pretty special. Whether I mean to or not, every time I come to Newbury Street, I end up spending a good bit of my time hanging out in Newbury Comics.

Unlike corporate music stores Newberry comics has its own flavor. They are unique and fun. The store sells music, posters, stickers, jewelery...etc. It's hard to walk into the store and not buy something. The employees are very nice and are willing to help you find anything. They sell music in records, tapes and cds. One of my favorite items at the store is there t-shirts. They sell hysterical t-shirts. They have one liners from famous movies. I abolutely love going to Newberry Comics.

Despite the name, you'll find much more than comics here. In fact, if anything, the focus of the store is really music or, more generally, pop culture. Their music selection is great, and they've added a nice DVD collection as well. Additionally, you can find a large number of cool chachkas. It's a great place to browse if you're idly wandering around on Newbury Street, and it's hard to resist buying something neat on the way out.

Cheap DVDs and music, as well as a large assortment of accessories and fun gifts. I've spent hours in this store, just walking around and looking at all the toys, gag gifts and clothing you can buy. Some of it is so funny. Also, they have used DVDs and CDs so they are even cheaper. Good times at Newbury Comics.

This is a great store for those looking for used CDs, random Pop Culture gifts, DVDs, etc. Located on the end of Newbury Street closest to Mass. Ave., this is my favorite music store in all of Back BAy and South End. I think it's the most reasonably priced, too.

While still a better alternative than buying your music at an expensive chain store, this place is nothing special. The most amusement comes from the little boxing Jesus dolls that are available for purchase. The sales associates are minimally helpful, and are always willing to talk about their own musical recommendations. All-in-all a decent store for your musical ventures.

If you're looking for a particular CD or DVD and you don't want to spend a lot of money (or pirate it) this store may carry it. There are a number of great deals to be had here. The used CDs come very cheap and they're good quality. The store also sells a lot of random, funny little t-shirts and the like.

Newbury Comics on Newbury Street offers a great selection on both music and other interesting trinkets. A great place for an original gift. Newbury Comics offers the cheapest CD's in town..both used and new. They are quite a bargain compared to the Virgin Megastore at the end of the block. Shopping at Newbury Comics on Newbury Street is a great experience. There are an eclectic mix of people and stores in the area. Sorry, not much parking
PROS: great area, great prices
CONS: no parking

People who are new to Boston are enthralled with Newbury comics. I mean, they have CDs by bands they don't play on the radio! But even though the selection is good (not stellar), the prices are decent (they have the same mark- up as everyone else), and the concept is good, its the staff that makes me dislike this Newbury Street landmark. The last thing I want in a record store is to feel self- conscious about what I take to the counter- that keeps me from BUYING things. Basically, I don't ever feel comfortable buying anything thats not either respected classic rock (I bought my Velvet Underground album there) or something so new, the staff doesn't even know about it yet. I don't think I could ever buy an album by a band that is played on Mtv at Newbury Comics, lest I want the scenester staff to point and giggle at me. Through their lip- rings.

Newbury Comics is an amazing experience. You don't just go to pick up the new Beck CD. You go to wander through the aisles, talk to the laid back, college radio type workers about why you love the artists and movies you love. If you go into Best Buy, those people don't know Cher from Aimee Mann and could care less. It's great even if you're going for a quick run to know that if you have a question, someone can answer it. I also highly recommend the Wicked Cheap DVD and Music section. I picked up Clueless for $8 and Moulin Rouge for $10! It's a great place to build your collection and just hang around people a little like you.
PROS: Wicked Cheap and a Staff that Knows Their Stuff
CONS: Can be Crowded

This store is half/comics and half/music. They have a great used and new selection of music, cheaper than most places because they offer so much savings all the time. good buys here!
