Harvest Coop is another one of those stores you can feel good about when you shop there. The Coop has a great selection of organic and local foods that sell for much less than they do at other specialty grocery stores. Members collectively "own" the Coop and are involved in making decisions for the store. Members also receive discounts (but have to pay a fee first.) Regardless, the prices are fair, the selection's great, the people are friendly and they sell wine. And beer. Good beer.

PROS: Organic, local, fair prices, sell good wine and beer, friendly
CONS:

Harvest Co-op is a local independent grocery store specializing in organic, local, and vegetarian foods. Their prices for packaged foods are often more expensive than you would find at Whole Foods but their produce (because it is local) is often cheaper!

The deal is that you can join Harvest either for life ($200) or for 1 year ($20). If you join you get 2% off all your purchases, if you join and you work there ("member work") a couple hours a month you can get much bigger discounts (20%). They also have member appreciation days where you can save 10%.

I like going to harvest because of its convenient location (right in front of the subway in central square), it's tasty cafe, and because it is a local business. They also have lots of community events there like arts workshops and movie showings for free.

PROS: organic and vegan food, local business, coop membership/ownership
CONS: can be expensive

Harvest Co-op is a great idea, as it is the only Co-op I know about in Boston or Cambridge. However, they are fairly expensive. In terms of prices I would recommend Trader Joe's. They do have a nice cafe area, unlike Trader Joe's with some good lunch choices. The staff is also very nice.

This is a local market that has fresh produce and sells subway passes. A convenient location in Cambridge to buy a subway pass if you don't live close to Harvard or Porter Square. Lines can get long and the store can get crowded. Parking is available behind the store in a lot, but it is generally easier to maneuver around the area (Central Square) by foot. Cashiers are considerate and will pack your bags light if you ask them to nicely.

PROS: Easily accessible, friendly cashiers.
CONS: tough parking
