I have been going to this place since before it burned down. When I heard about the El Pelon fire, I was devastated. One because I thought I would never have one of their burritos (especially the burrito pescado and the el guapo) and two I was in line to get a free one damn it!

For the most part, the quality has stayed the same and the only thing I do not like about the new location is that the restaurant seems dull and lifeless. The old one had authentic Mexican trinkets on the wall and a bright yellow paint and the new one is boring to look at. The worst part about the new location is the location. Located right next to dbag central aka Boston College. Everytime I go in there its "hey bro I totally puked on myself last night uh huh...dude that girl totally wanted to bang me...my white hat and lacrosse pinnie look really good today right brah?"

Sorry...

If you go there my recommendations would be the Fish Burrito, the El Guapo and definitely get the chips and guacamole. The thing I always liked about this place over Anna's is that the rice is better seasoned. Places like Anna's and Felipes are always consistent but El Pelon offers you a wider variety of authentic Mexican food like their Tortas and Plantanos. Everyone should try this place at least once (I would go everyday if I could) but be prepared to get a ear full of dbag when you do.

Food is great, space is cool. Love having it back.

We visited El Pelon on Comm Ave Brighton for the first time today! It was awesome! The restaurant was clean. The staff were inviting! The food was amazing! Everything was cooked to order and made fresh. The salsa is the best salsa in town. Brighton has needed a place like this for a long time! Thanks Jim for bringing El Pelon to our neighborhood! I will be spreading the word!

Cons: Our family couldn't think of anything negative.

i love the vegetarian burrito and plato. everything tasted very fresh. chipotle salsa is amazing, and the guacamole is so fresh tasting, lacking the too-salty, preservative taste that some of the chain mexican burrito joints seem to have.

i recently had a party and ordered $50 of food to go. $50 can go a long way at el pelon. everyone commented on how good it was. the fried plantains lasted about 30 seconds after putting them out.

overall the food is excellent for a very reasonable price.

I live in East Boston but El Pelon is definitely worth the drive out to BC (luckily, parking's super easy). The food's great and the prices can't be beat. None of that American- faux mexican here, El Pelon's got Jarritos and authentic Mexican and a surviving spirit! I do the veggie burrito and there's always a ton of different types of vegetables in there, always fresh and delicious. It's worth a special trip to visit their new location!

Pros: Prices! Flavor

El Pelon has the best burritos/tacos/food for the best price. I used to go at least twice a week to it's Fenway location! And when it burned down last new years it ruined my holidays.

But now its back up and just as awesome! My first meal at the new El Pelon: El Guapo with a side of Plantains. Just as good as I remembered it!
El Pelon will always have a special place in my heart.

Maybe I'm biased because I've been spoiled with Chipotle's amazing burritos for the past two years, but El Pelon just did not stand up to all the great reviews I read at all. The service was quick, and that's about the only good thing I have to say about El Pelon. The music blasting over the stereo was loud enough that I had to repeat my order 3 times to the lady at the register. I ordered a grilled chicken burrito, with chips and guacomole on the side. The burrito was bland, no spice or hint of mexican flavors (does this place own cumen??). The chicken was a little too mystery-meat looking for my tastes too. The guacamole was whipped to a creamy paste, and had almost no flavor at all. No garlic, cumen, lime, salt, red onion...just NO flavor! The tortilla chips were stale, but somehow still oily. And to top it off, the bottle of water I ordered had come straight from the box, not refrigerated. I would defintely choose a delicious burrito from Chipotle over El Pelon any day of the week!

this place is so great. i usually get the carnitas burrito, and chips and salsa, plus guacamole. The chips are usually hot and fresh, and the guacamole is awesome. my friends all agree that it is great, and the price is pretty reasonable. and the hot sauce is really good, but some days it's hotter than others. it's like a fun surprise.

Pros: The chips, especially when they're still hot, the guacamole, the hot sauce, the mexican oompah-band music.

Cons: line can be pretty long, seating indoors is limited

.

I have friends who swear by El Pelon Taqueria. In all honesty, I have only visited the restaurant twice. Both times, however, my food came out cold and tasteless. Both times my chips came out stale, the guacamole and rice were sub par, and my entrees looked like they were put together by a four-year-old. And to top it off, my bill for two was over $20! I probably will give the place one more chance to impress me (and I'll editing my review accordingly).

Pros: None that I can think of

Cons: Bad food, wasn't ever able to find a table

El Pelon has the best fish tacos, quesadillas and burritos in Boston. Amazing guacamole and salsa! Outdoor seating! The food is high quality and so affordable it's almost absurd. It's also run by some of the friendliest people in town- it can't be beat.

This place is a hidden gem. All the burritos, tacos and platos are delicious but the fish ones deserve special mention. The prices are very reasonable too. Highly recommended.

P.S. Don't forget to try the ginseng green tea from their fountain. I don;t know where they get it from but its unlie any other green tea I have tasted and its delicious.

Up until recently, my job was located about 3 blocks away from El Pelon and, boy, do I miss that place! In my opinion, they have the best authentic Mexican food. I don't like "American Mexican" food at those "other places". Their fish tacos are extremely tasty, their burritos are fabulous and their plantains are out of this world. The service is also very friendly and very quick.

El Pelon used to be my favorite place in the world. Reasonable prices and delicious, fresh ingredients that were always a little bit different made me keep coming back.

Unfortunately, their quality has definately gone downhill. I got a carnitas burrito with tasteless pork and lumps of cold cheese and a tostada that had brown, gooey lettuce on it. This wasn't the first time. I suppose I'll give them one more try before I write them off completely, but I'm an Anna's/BG convert now, and I'm not sorry about it.

The hot sauce they have may be the best I've ever had. That doesn't trump moldy lettuce though. Try the fish burrito, it's fantastic.

El Pelon is by far the best burrito joint in Boston. After eating a few times at El Pelon I am unable to eat at Anna's anymore, it pales in comparison. You can't go wrong with a burrito here, I recommend the El Guapo.

This is the only place that beats out Anna's for the best burrito in boston. Get the El Guapo.... you'll need LOADS of napkins, but you won't be disappointed!

Cheap, great service, AWESOME food! Call ahead with your order during peak times. I call when I get on line and by the time I'm up, my order is ready :-) Wish they would bring back this one dish called Taquitos de Aires. Chicken Enchiladas and Tostadas are really, really good. I used to eat there twice a day.

El Pelon is a fantastic dining experience for the broke college student, or family of ten coming from a Sox game. There is often a line out the door to order food, but don't be discouraged- it's a very quick wait! The food is the cheapest in town, and certainly the tastiest! Customers also have the option to call-in an order, or get delivery. If only El Pelon had Margaritas on their menu, it would be HEAVEN!

"'ve been frequenting El Pelon for about three years now. There are a bunch of options for Mexican food in Boston, and I think this place is hands down numero uno. The food is all reasonably priced and it is so good! The chips and salsa are wonderful, the burritos are amazing (especially the El Guapo) and you must get the fried plantains to start. There is always lively Mexican music playing inside the authentically decorated restaurant, and in the summer, there is plenty of outdoor seating. Other add-ins: T-shirts for $12, burrito cards (buy 10, get 11th free), and free refills on sodas.

This is the type of place you are willing to drive across town (or from another town) just to get a Tortas. The food is fantastic, quick, and actually affordable. It is also a good place to hang with visiting friends because of the proximity to Fenway Park and a good bar or two right next door. It shows you know the "hidden gems" of a city, which chicks dig. This place gets the Reidocat's double thumbs up!

I was so excited to find Restaurant Row, they've got everything you could look for without the crowds of the obvious Fenway spots. I was expecting something different at El Pelon - it's tiny with limited seating. Outdoor dining great, but not all the tables have umbrellas so it can get very warm in the sun! Picnic tables so not the best spot if you want privacy. But the food was tasty and the prices are great. They've got a great selection with some extra stuff you don't see at the typical Mexican eatery. Good spot for pre- or post-game!

I love Mexican food and have lived in southern California, so I know a good place from a bad one. El Pelon is tops! I have tried most of the Mexican restaurants around and have found few that can come close to the freshness of ingredients and great taste of El Pelon's food. And the prices are very good. The atmosphere is fun, don't expect Newbury St. chic. This is simply delicious, real Mexican food and a funky little restaurant. The picnic tables outside are great when the weather is good. And if you don't like something, the owner is almost always there. No one should ever leave El Pelon unsatisfied!

Having spent some time in California, I would have thought the Mexican food here would have been so much better than anything back East. Not so. El Pelon's burritos, fish tacos, and empanadas are some of the best I've ever had. Even the chips and salsa totally rock! Oh, and the taquitos . . .
I need an El Pelon fix now.

I have been living in Boston for 7 years now and have always had a difficult time finding a great healthy meal at a good value served promptly with a smile. I was delighted when I discovered El Pelon, a small Mexican joint in the Fenway that has the feel of a genuine community-oriented restaurant: not only do they have great food (dinner for under 5 bucks!) but they seem to be more than that, taking the time to get to know regulars and offering fun community-building activities like the kick-ass jalapeño eating contest in late March. You just get the feeling that the folks at El Pelon enjoy what they do, which seems to be a rare commodity these days.

Perhaps positive reviews show lack of exposure to authentic Mexican food. Food is average. Caters to American tastes (I ordered a torta, a traditional Mexican sandwich-it came on a hamburger bun with cheddar cheese-not ingredients used in Mexico) Burritos fell short too. The rice wasn't the kind found in Mexican cooking and no salsa was given (you don't have to be Mexican to know that salsa should be served considering that it has replaced ketchup as the most widely sold condiment in the U.S.) Service was poor-20 minutes for a meal when there are no other customers is too long. Having lived in Chicago and Oakland, areas with large Mexican populations (also growing up eating my mother's and grandmothers' AUTHENTIC Mexican cooking), I long for REAL Mexican cuisine in MA. I've found good offerings at Anna's and Taqueria La Mexicana in Somerville, but El Pelon is not one of them.

Everything I read on here says this is the "best kept secret in Boston" and "way better than Anna's." So one day a few of us made the trip, what a waste. I feel as though the Burrito God's wanted to punish me for thinking that any place in this city, save Anna's, can touch what you can find in CO and CA.

The Burrito was fine but far from overwhelming. On the other hand, we couldn't even finish our "enchiladas." Truly a disappointment. I am starting to think the positive reviews on this site are all from employees and the owners....

Being originally from Oakland, CA all of these reviews saying how authentic El Pelon is make me laugh.

Let's start with the basics. First off, you don't use ROMAINE lettuce in a burrito. You don't water down your sour cream and squirt it onto the various dishes with a ketchup bottle.

When you prep meat for a burrito, you make sure it's lean and cut thin, so that when someone takes a bite they don't get half the contents of the burrito all over their lap.

El Pelon is definately better than most but anyone who thinks this place squashes Anna's is smoking something fierce.

On top of that, the service is unnaceptably slow for a taqueria.

A good place for El Pelon (and most taquerias in boston) to start is to make refried beans that don't taste like they came from a can.

Excellent quality and excellent value! More authentic than Anna's or other tacquerias, because the meat comes straight off the grill. Try the sandwiches, which sport a perfectly toasted bun!! They even bring your food out to your table! Only they don't carry normal soft drinks. Pass on their substitute colas.

I lived in San Francisco for 10 years, so I was blown away to find a better, more unique taqueria in Boston. Besides doing a great job with the normal fixins, they also add things like marinated cabbage & limed onions, plus sides like fried plantain. All add up to a step above all other taquerias in Boston and perhapes much of the rest of the country. Down side is difficult parking and longer wait for food than most taquerias.

All add up to a step above all other taquerias in Boston and perhapes much of the rest of the country. Down side is difficult parking and longer wait for food than most taquerias.

Great cheap food! Burritos are very tasty and savory, more so than Ana's. Will keep you coming back for more. In addition to great food, very friendly staff. Great Service!

What a find! I'm afraid we'll never get into the place once everyone finds out about this gem. The food is fresh, authentic and delicious. Oh, and the sauces are incredible! Beware though, the staff are "uncharacteristically" Boston as they're helpful and seem to delight in offering tastes of their favorite sauces and side dishes. :-)

This little restaurant is one of my favorites. It has great food at affordable prices -- almost every single dish is under $5 and served fresh. The decor is interesting with the country's art and silver-plated mirrors. The place is authentic in that bright colors and tiled floors and tables are used to keep the temperature down -- especially appreciated in these dog-day of August. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, and every so often there is a cntest for who can eat the most spicy food!

After decades of living in Cali. I'm happy that I finally found a great Boston Taqueria. This place is a gem. Make the trip at all costs.

Anyone who has ever been to Mexico and Southern California (basically northern Mexico) would laugh at the pathetic attempts of places like Anna's and Boca Pico. El Pelon is what you get in Mexico and its the best: fresh ingredients, well cooked (not dry and nasty like Boca), and employees who take time with each order (do not slap nasty Taco Bell quality beans, and a paultry bits of chicken on a rubbery tortilla like Anna's). People in long lines at crappy mexican eateries should wake up and find El Pelon....simply the best and only fresh mex in Boston!!!!

After spending a year in Europe El Pelon was the right cure for adding a little spice, avacado and black beans to my real mexican food deficiency. The restaurant decor and music sets just the right upbeat and funky tone. The outdoor seating lets you relax and soak up some rays while enjoying dishes like "El Guapo" and sipping on horchata. Que rico!

I'm sorry but the editors choice are what we Mexicans call TEX-MEX, so not mexican at all.

El Pelon is not just good and friendly service, it is also good food and they have the BEST FISH BURRITO IN TOWN, not like that other burrito place.

El Pelon is a massive amount of good food for a very fair price. Service is as you would expect in the middle of an area with tons of colleges and a ballpark, but not bad enough to prevent me from going often.

Having lived in San Francisco for five years before returning to Boston, I was really looking forward to El Pelon. In SF, you can walk down just about any street or just about every neighborhood and find a taqueria. I'm sorry to say that El Pelon was VERY disappointing.

I'm used to free chips with my Burrito, not here. I'm used to a big, full Burrito, not here. I'm used to a Burrito with a lot of flavor, a choice for rice, a choice of beans, a choice of whether I would like crema (sour cream) or not, etc. You don't get that here.

If you're looking for a REAL taqueria, try to find someplace else, this is not it.

Pros: Close to Fenway, Outdoor summer eats

Cons: Nothing special, Bland burritos

.

The only "mexican" food in Boston that actually tastes like mexican food. The fish tacos taste just like the ones I have tried on the beaches of Rosarito and Ensenada.
