The Living Room

★★★☆☆
Cushy couches and imaginative martinis make for a homey lounge, one that is (mostly) lacking in pretension. (617) 892-4313

I absolutely love The Living Room. I live in the north end, and pop in there quite frequently. Whether it is for a few drinks, dinner, or brunch I am always completely satisfied. They have so many beers on draft. I like to switch things up so I can get a 2.50 coors light or a heavier brew like pretty things. They also have such a long martini list so when I go with the girls we order a bunch of them :) love the down and dirty! There are half priced appetizers from 4 to 7 so I usually get the calamari or the spinach artichoke dip which are two of my favorite things on the menu. There are a ton of sandwiches and wraps that are so yummy, and dishes like the steak tips or salmon miso are delicious. I go there on Saturday or Sunday mornings for brunch which are the best. The menu is so good, and the drinks even better! The atmosphere is so laid back and friendly. Love the lounge with the couches and high tops but I also love going into the dining room sometimes. The staff is so nice and attentive-I always feel like they're my friends when I leave there. This place is a must for anyone who has not been there yet!

Had a great time at the living room last night!!! Place was pretty busy so all the tables were full. Our waitress was extremely attentive and we couldn't have had a better time. Will be back for sure

My boyfriend and I went here yesterday and had a really BAD experience. We went in on a Sunday around 3 with plans to lounge on the couches, enjoy some food, booze a bit and study on our laptops. Our first round of drinks came out after about 10 minutes, even with only 2 other tables in the whole place filled, and the calamari we ordered was decent. My boyfriend then ordered a 2nd drink. The main issue began when our entrees came. We felt as though the cobb salad that my boyfriend had ordered wasn??t what he had intended it to be. For an almost $15 salad, there were oiled leaves surrounded by a few pieces of avocado on one side, some slices of bacon on the other, and a few slices of chicken that did NOT look good. By ??not good?? I??m talking over-cooked dried out meat. My lean cuisine frozen lunches have better looking chicken than that. We were uncomfortable returning it (which we even told the waitress apologetically), but it was an unimpressive, unhappy looking salad and we didn??t want to eat it. After we sent it back, the waitress brought it over to the bartender who began shooting us some rather unfriendly looks. No one came back to offer something alternative on the menu, or ask us any further about our issue. ALSO, we still hadn??t gotten the drink my boyfriend ordered over 20 minutes before. I had finished my meal when that drink finally came, WHICH we had watched as the bartender took the shaker he was making it with away from the bar and back into a separate room. (I don??t want to sound paranoid, but how would you feel if you were being made uncomfortable by the staff then they go off to ??prepare?? your drink in another room?!) My boyfriend thought it was a safer bet to not take a risk on the drink, but was going to pay for it none the less. Then our bill came, with the salad still on it? Yep. When asking to speak with a manager we got, you guessed it, THE BARTENDER! Apparently he??s the owner??s son. He arrogantly argued for over 10 minutes that in his opinion, there was nothing wrong with the salad. He told us he didn??t care what my boyfriend??s reasons were for sending it back, that it wasn??t his problem. He then finished by saying there was no one else to talk to there, and if we didn??t pay he would call the cops. We were pretty much in shock. It??s not like we ate half of it then decided ??nevermind?. We didn??t like the items, we sent it back right away and no staff approached us with any questions or alternative choices It??s really crummy that manager is such a cocky snob. Maybe instead of sitting at the bar hitting on the hung over girls ordering bloody marys, he could focus a little effort on the service to his other customers. We??re not going back and we??re spreading the word, because HEAVEN FORBID you are unhappy with the food they prepare for you. You??ll be out of luck.

Unfortunately, my friends and I decided to spend New Years Eve at The Living Room. After paying over $200 for entrance, mediocre food and one glass of champagne, an EMPLOYEE (bartender) of this establishment actually screamed obscenities at my party. Why? Because we asked her to shut the door while we waited in line for the ladies room. She was holding the door open, letting in frigid air so that she and her friends could smoke cigarettes and weed. While working.

After being called every name under the sun, I notified a hostess who did nothing about it. When I went to order a drink, the bartender scowled, whispered and pointed at us. When I emailed the manager the next day, he promised a prompt resolution. 29 days later, he finally emailed to say that nothing would be done. NOTHING.

I am not expecting a lot but really? When I drop a decent amount of money I expect yummy food and a fun time. Not bland, boring food and to be screamed at in public.

THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE. It is a waste of your money for horrible service, no parking, mediocre food and overpriced drinks.

STAY AWAY!

The Living Room isn't a martini bar per se, but it has that kind of vibe (and very good cocktails). There's little dancing. It's a good bar to catch up with friends and meet new ones. The crowd is varied, but generally a cool group of people.

Only worth going if you're up for some unique and very tasty martinis. Atmosphere is nice, but nothing special. Some nights a dance floor is started up, others can be more just groups hanging out. Go early on weekends or be prepared to wait in a long and slow-moving line. A bit of a walk from other Faneuil Hall bars.

This is a solid place. I wouldn't put it in the extraordinary realm because I think the drinks are a little small and a little too sweet, and the food is OK - seems like microwaved dare, nothing made by scratch. But the atmosphere is very chill and the crowd is interesting. So overall, not a bad spot.

The Living Room isn't your average Boston bar. It certainly isn't Fenway/Red Sox-style or a hole in the wall and it also isn't the Oak Room. It is somewhere in-between. It caters to the young professionals, which is a nice change from the majority of places around town (which are dominated by the 21-24 year olds). It is located close to the North End, by the water, which is a nice location, and even has some outdoor seating, which you could be lucky to get. When I've gone, I sat inside in the ""living room-style"" area on couches and cushy stools. The martinis are their specialty and they have at least 30 on their menu ranging from the Butterfinger to the North End Cosmo. The drinks are very good. The bar has a nice classy atmosphere, while retaining the casualness of Boston in general (Boston, being not very upscale as a whole)

I had a great time at a holiday party held here, but it would've been nice to hear the conversation. The drinks were superb! Then two friends brought me here for an easy going afternoon for delicious apps and desserts (highlights of the whole meal).

Absolutley awesome place. The music was good, the food was great, and the martini's knocked my socks off. I had a blast.

I've had to visit this place twice over the two year interval (my friends decided to go there for drinks after dinner), this place is just getting worse every year. The staff is extremely rude, the atmosphere is nothing special and the drinks suck, plus you have to wait forever to be served. There are much better places out there for the money that you are paying. Will not go there again, lesson learned.

I have been to this restaurant many times and it just keeps getting better! The food is outstanding and fair priced and the drinks are great as well! Every time I go here my girlfriend and I have an AMAZING dinner and drinks, followed by some great dessert! To top off the night we head across the street from the restaurant and have a wonderful walk along the water with great views! Overall I would rate the living room a 5+! I recommend it to everyone who wants a great night with someone special!

I was looking for a nice, but not stuffy, restaurant for brunch - this seemed to fit the bill. Not even close. They call themselves 'homey', the word 'slovenly' is more appropriate. The food was mediocre at best, the coffee the worst I've ever had, cream was served in an espresso cup - and it wasn't cream, but milk. Just really, really bad if you're looking for decent food and service.

Cons: terrible food, slovenly wait staff, undrinkable coffee.

Every year I do the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. A few months back I decided to organize a wine tasting party that would include an auction to raise money for the cause. I chose The Living Room as the location because it's proximity to the financial distric for the after work crowd. The managment was extremely helpful with all the organizing and the staff went above and beyond to help make sure the night was successful. Some of the staff even made donations themselves. The food was yummy, the wine was flowing, and the night was a HUGE success!!!! At the end of the night when I went to settle my tab for the party I was pleasantly surprised to find my bill far less than I expected, the owner had arranged for a portion of the bill to be taken care of. His donation made a big difference so that the cost wouldn't cut in to our profits. I will definitely be using them again next year for our second anual wine tasting night!!!!

I just had an engagement party at the livingroom. The reserved area with couches and high top tables was perfect with plenty on space. The drinks were reasonably priced and the service was excellent. The appetizers served could have been better. I would highly recommend the livingroom. The prices, service, and ambiance were good.

the grilled chicken panini is the best chicken sandwich i have ever had. It comes with proscuito, sun dried tomato, fresh mozzarella, and pesto mayo on focaccia bread. I dont even like mayo but this is good. The atmosphere is nice as well, the couches are very comfortable. I havent been at night yet but from what I hear it is a great place to hang out. If you go try the chicken sandwich.

I went to LivingRoom last night and had a blast. My girlfriend had dinner there last night to beat the Valentines Day rush. She had some ""chick"" martini, i didn't try but she liked it enough to order another. The food and service were both outstanding. For the most part the waitress left us alone but checked in often enough to meet our needs. This is the type of place that my girlfriend and I could visit again or my buddies and I could vist and have an equally good time. I highly recommend Livingroom to anyone 21-40 looking to have a good time and good food.

As group of over 10 people, we went out for dinner Sunday September 23 and although we enjoyed the first hour (sitting on those fantasticly comfortable couches) the food was discusting. Everyone in the group does not recommend this restaurant. The service was slow and we found out some waiters were sitting on couches while we were waiting for orders to be taken. Definitely NOT the place to go to entertain a group of people.\r
\r
I ordered what they called seared Ahi Tuna (and it was completely cook and not fresh.\r

Needless to say we won't go there ever again!

Too much attitude! Bartenders are rude, can't ever get drink because they too busy with themselves. If you ever do, it taste horrible and overpriced. Even manager and the owner, believe it or not, are very rude. Never would go back. Don't recommend you do either.

The rating is only for the drink selection and consistent pours. Several of my favorites are on their list, but I don't visit too frequently because 1) too crowded 2) tough to get a drink ordered at either bar. Last couple times I've been there the number of rowdy drunk people almost outnumbered the people just trying to have a good drink and talk. Get there early if you want a seat; otherwise, be prepared to always be in a 'traffic' lane. Some of the appetizers are good.

I went to the Livingroom recently on a busy friday night. The hostess was very welcoming. It seem very busy but we were sat right away. The waitress came over to water our glasses and offer us a few minutes with the drink menu. The menu was great, it took my friends and I a while to decide. The waitress offered her favorite martini (watermellon), I tried it and was very impressed. The food was equally as good. We left the diningroom and hung out by the bar for a while. All and all I had a great time and the food was awesome! Will return very soon!

Went on a Sat. night for a birthday pre-bar dinner. Were sat about 15 min. late, no big deal. Ordered a round of shots first thing at the table. Our waitress claimed they were coming, but we never saw them, and we were there for over two hours. Our drinks were not recognizable in that we could not tell if it was a gin and tonic or vodka and soda. Our waitress brought these unrecognizable drinks around the table to ask us to taste to see if we knew what they were, yeah she had no clue what they were. The food took over an hour to come out when there were only two maybe three other dining parties in the room. When it came, many things were cold. French fries were the colder than the air outside and a seared tuna dish came out like a well-done tuna steak. After speaking to the manager, he sent the hostess to ask us how she could fix things. Sorry but the irreversable damage was done. We asked for the tuna and a few drinks to be removed, which they were, and left, not to return. Though prices were not bad for a trendy bar/restaurant, save your money and go elsewhere.

Pros: The one drink that was stiff enough to be called a cocktail.

Cons: There isn't enough space provided here.

.

we went on a monday night. it was pretty dead. the hostess thought her cell phone conversation behind the podium was more important than patrons, we had to ask the bartender for menus because our waitress never offered them and was nowhere to be found. the bartender seemed annoyed by our request. our food was okay, but my dish was supposed to come with a salad - when it didn't come and i asked about it the waitress had no idea that it was supposed to be included with my meal. when it's a slow night, i would expect better than average service, not far below average.

I like TLR. The food is good & the bartenders know their drinks. The service is friendly & above average. They have a great martini list & the atmosphere is relaxed yet fun. On the weekends it can get quite crowded yet it remains comfortable. The music is popular & great to bop along to. It's a good date place as well as a trendy spot to go with a group of friends. Parking is typical for the N. End. There isn't any. Valet is offered or there is a lot a block or so away. Insider tip: Mon - Fri from 5pm - 7pm appetizers are half price & draft Coors is $1.

My girlfriend and I stumbled across this while on the way to the North End. The style is great and relaxed, both times that we've been there it's been quiet. The dining room is classy but still fun, and the lounge (we had brunch there) is an awesome idea. The website promotions look fun, so we'll have to go back. Prices aren't too bad either

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Prices

Cons: Service a little slow, T access (Blue Line)

The Living Room is a great hidden gem in the North End, a place where hip bars are at a premium. The initial review said never crowded, no lines. That's a misnomer. Always unbelievably crowded, and if you get there past 10pm there is a line. The drinks are great, but minimal seating and space. Very hip local crowd. Big negative, it closes at 1am, and hour earlier than most of the bars in Boston!

My experience at The Living Room was both a surprise and a disappointment. The atmosphere was very relaxing and festive, however, the service and food was the worst I have encountered in Boston in 10 years! To his credit, our server was very apologetic; the restaurant was short-staffed and he had a dozen tables to contend with. However, for this caliber of restaurant, this is inappropriate for a Fri night. The food, both the appetizers and entrees of myself and my friend (shrimp and salmon salad and seared tuna dinner) were so salty we could barely eat them. It was so disappointing to take such good quality seafood and then salt them to death!! Afterwards, we mingled in the bar for a bit. In the future, I might go for a drink at the bar but never again for dinner!

I really enjoyed the Living Room. I went for dinner on a Saturday night and had a good time. I had angel hair past with shrimp and scallops, which was delicious. My date's chicken broccoli alfredo was good also. Everyone raves about the strawberry martini, which I had, but I didn't think it was great. Service was horrible though. The waitress was friendly, but impossibly slow. I didn't mind because I wasn't hungry and not in a rush. And it didn't help that you have to walk through the bar to get to the bathroom, but I will go back. The only thing I didn't understand was why we had to wait for a table to be set-up when there was plenty open tables in the dining room.

This place is like a breathe of fresh air to the Boston nightlife scene. It's trendy without needing a velvet rope. The food was phenomenal. The service was great. Defintiely try the martinis (I had an espresso one and the Rising Sun)!!! It was the perfect place to go out for dinner and have the party come to us. Definitely a good place for a romantic date or for going out with a group.

A great spot and space spoiled by the fact that the food is simply not very good. I've been here on three occasions now for various birthday parties, and I haven't found a single appetizer or entree to be well prepared or conceived. At times, it has been flat out bad. The menu tries to incorporate a lot of different styles, without being good at a single one. The drinks are pretty average. A lot of my friends have taken dates here, and it does have a nice ambience, but I think you have many better choices for food quality and certainly value out there.

I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago. The food was good and the martinis were excellent. The bar was like a meat market and extremely loud. You have to walk through the bar to get to the bathrooms (if you are eating in the restaurant), This was tough because it was so crowded in the bar. It took a while to get past the crowd.

I went to the living room hoping for a dining experience. To me, an experience includes an amazing atmosphere. This place does not resemble the hip place other reviewers have made it out to be. In fact, they even have tiled cardboard cielings - similar to a middle school. Many of the decorations do not compliment each other. The Cheesecake factory does a better job at creating an atmosphere for heaven sakes.

We love this place. Excellant lounge place with good looking people and nice drink selection. But ""no line"" as said on the main review??? What were they talking about! There is a line every Friday and Saturday night. I learned the hard way. Thankfully it was my birthday and a large group was inside waiting for me to arrive so the manager was convinced to let me in. Grrrreat service. I would go again...but treat like all great clubs and arrive before 10 PM.

Decent food (at a slightly high price), great drinks, and an awesome atmosphere!
Service can be a hit or miss depending on the night or (God forbid) the Sunday morning. The brunch is what I hear most people trash. If you are not prepared for long lines, long waits, and tired service- don't go. Otherwise, suck it up and accept what every Sunday brunch is- packed!

I went for the first time last night. The food was fine. We only had a few appetizers, but I cant see why others are trashing the food. I mean, for $8 apps, what do you expect, LEspalier?? We had the calamari, the spinach potstickers, and the portobello fries. All were good, and the fries are highly recommended. The service was also good. Also the music mix was quite good; it was hip-hop, but not the crap they play on MTV, but generally good hip-hop. Unfortunately, though I had heard there used to be a 5-1 girl-guy ratio, those days are gone. ;-) Still the mix of people was good. Pet-peeve: they call their cocktails martinis on their drink menu, and yet a real martini (gin & vermouth) isnt even listed.

The Livingroom is the perfect combination of restaurant and lounge. The martinis are wonderful and the bartenders are friendly. It's a great place to go with friends or meet new ones. Not to mention the food is amazing. Finally a place that you can go to for a quiet dinner or for great drinks.

Ok, I believe in second chances and I gave The Living Room another try. Well, that was my mistake. The appetizers came with the meals and were cold. The waitress told us the manager wouldn't let her do anything about the cold food because it was already on our table, which I do not understand. The drinks were good but we came to eat not waste money on drinks. Please do not make the same mistake(s) I did.

We made the mistake of going to the Sunday pajama brunch. We were ignored when we first walked in and then told to sit where ever we wanted. The waitress took ""pajama brunch"" a bit to literally, wearing what looked like pj's stained with paint. The food was atrocious and way overpriced. The melon and berry mix had one measly strawberry and lots of honeydew melon that was so un-ripe it cruched when you chewed it. We were foolish enough to order mimosas, which were less than 6 ounces of liquid at $8.50 a piece. Don't waste your time here - walk the extra 100 feet to King Fish Hall in Quincy Market for a phenomenal brunch with live jazz. It takes more than a faux cool room (the couches stunk, were dirty and had cigarrette holes in them) to make a restaurant work.

If this place is good enough for Antoine Walker, it is sure as hell good enough for any other Bostonian. The ambience of the bar is terrific--dark, lots of couches, good music. The restaurant has a similar atmosphere (sans couches) but is remarkably separated from the noise and crowd in the bar area. The food is superb--I had the pecan-crusted salmon which was phenomenal and anyone who eats here must try the fried cheesecake.
This place is a must for anyone dining out or going out in the Boston area.

Although the owner/manager is a bit perculiar about who he let's in (seemed to be all men, strange), this is a great place. Don't want to stand in line and maybe not get in, go earlier and have dinner. Although the martini's are more than some meals, it's definitely worth it. I highly recommend the strawberry martini, the Crab Cake salad. I love that they serve Soft pretzels instead of bread. Great idea. It's a mixed crowd, which is always nice. Great menu items, great variety. Although everytime I've been there I've never been able to sit on the cushy couches, I still think it's a great addition to Boston!

The food here was good, its unfortunate that the diningroom feels like a retail store with bad drapes. The chef deserves better surroundings.

The martinis were good, but the bar area can't decide if its a sports bar (complete with TV) or a dance club with pulsating music and no dance floor.
