This Thai restaurant in Harvard Square offers authentic Thai Cuisine at affordable prices. Catering is available as well as a four course dinner with a bottle of wine.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Older Cambridge coeds and young professionals head below street level to commune over filling, inexpensive rice dishes and bowls of noodle soup. Soft lighting and dutiful service add a slightly sophisticated air, as does an engaging wine list (beat the heat of the lethal curry dishes with a crisp New Zealand sauvignon blanc). Ex-pats and those who've visited Thailand enjoy the atmospheric Bangkok street souvenirs dotted throughout the restaurant.

The Food
In addition to basic Thai dishes like sweet pad thai and crunchy spring rolls, the menu features many authentic dishes rarely found on American shores. Unusual, adventurous dishes include miang kum (flavorful mounds of diced chicken, onion, peanut and mango, served on spinach leaves), khao tang na nang (crisp rice crackers served with shrimp and chicken dips) and kha pla (crispy minced fish marinated with fresh herbs). Order a round of honey-drizzled fried-banana bites for dessert.

Key Points

  • Authentic Thai Dishes
  • Affordable Menu
  • Friendly and Attentive Service

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Skip Harvard Square's many greasy spoons for a healthy and affordable lunch (dishes generally average between $6-$8).
  2. When to Go - Expect a wait on weekend nights, especially when the universities host parents' weekends. Call ahead to see if a reservation's recommended.
  3. Know Before You Go - Pay attention to the menu's spice notations, as many dishes are normally prepared with a ton of curry and spices. Any dish's spice quotient can be adjusted.

Ratings_icons best thai in Boston

C. T. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,069

This is my favorite thai place in the Boston area. The restaurant itself is small and feels a bit cramped, and you'll probably have to wait for a table, but it's worth it. Their food is spectacular. I recommend going with some friends and ordering a bunch of dishes to share.

Normally, I don't care much for Thai food, but this place is an exception. Good service, great price, nice atmosphere. As I mentioned, food is much better than most Thai places I'm used to

Ratings_icons this place totally blows

das1

having been dragged there a dozen or so times, I feel as though I am something of an expert on 9 tastes, and concluded probably halfway through my 9 tastes journey, that it is really and truly awful. pad thai is okay and cheap (i'll give it that. although when we're talking cheap we're talkign $9 cheap not 6 or 7, which would more closely mirror its value)
anything else at 9 tastes is totally shitty.

Pros: pad thai (maybe)

Cons: everything else

Ratings_icons Good food, but I hope you like eating in a basment

TheReviewa

Tthe Thai at 9 tastes is quite good. The menu is extensive and they offer a bento box type meal for deal-seekers. I would recommend the duck or the spicy basil chicken (off menu item) for entrees and pastry puffs as an app. Prices are reasonable and there is a full bar too. Surely a good choice if you are in the mood for Thai.

Pros: Great menu and good flavor

Cons: Eating in a basment

Ratings_icons Not as good as I hoped!

matinaleung

I went with a girlfriend of mine for dinner. The place itself was nice and cozy. But the overall experience was not as good as I hoped. The water tasted very funny. I think because they put lemon in the water but it tasted like detergent kind of lemon, not so much natural lemon. I had to order a soda cos I couldn't stand the water. But I could still taste the strange lemon taste in that soda. The food was just okay. The seafood dish we ordered was not very fresh. The duck we ordered came in smaller portion than I thought. The chicken in the fried rice was dry and over cooked. The wait staff was just okay. They were not too friendly with us, no smile, no eye contact. Given the good review by other people, I might give it one more try if I pass by the area for lunch in the future (maybe I was just having bad luck that night). But I have tried much better Thai restaurants than this....

Ratings_icons Great, inexpensive Thai food.

I love this restaurant--I go there at least a couple times a month. The lunch specials are an especially good deal--soup, appetizer, and entree for less than $8. My favorites are the pad thai and the green curry.

Ratings_icons Very Good!

nataliaking

I went here for my birthday and truly enjoyed the food! We made reservations, and arrived to find everything set up very nicely. The service was great, and the food tasted wonderful. I would definitely recommend this place! It looks a bit decieving on the outside--it looks like some small run-down place, but once you get inside you realize that the place is much bigger than it looks and much nicer too.

Pros: Good Service, Quick Service, Tasty Food

Ratings_icons great thai food

I order take out from 9 tastes all the time and love their dishes. The food is always delivered quickly, the service is friendly and their prices are reasonable. I spent 6 months in Thailand 3 years ago and their food is better than most around town. I love the nam sod salad and actually emailed the restaurant for the recipe and I received a response quickly. They were more than happy to give me the recipe. They get an A+ in my book for customer service and tasty Northern Thai cuisine.

Pros: customer service, reasonable prices, authentic Thai food

Cons: nothing, nothing, nothing

Ratings_icons Absolutely Overrated

pochi112

It is absolutely overrated. I was deceived by the crowd. It is the worst thai food that I had. I had the basil cripsy chicken. The chicken is greasy, oil soaked and seems to be Re-Fried (recooked leftover food). The drunken noodle is not good either, you can only taste sweet.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Bad door design

Dear Asian food lover,

I've been a regular customer of 9Tastes down on JFK in Harvard Square for a couple of months and would like to suggest their delicacies to you readers. My favorite appetizer there is Papaya salad, spicy and tasty. There are 2 main dishes that I equally like the most. One is 9Tastes Pad Thai, very tenderly delicious. The other is Spicy Basil Fish, the best sauteed dish I've ever tried in Thai restaurants. So you all should go there and enjoy your dinner. :-)

Pros: delicious, great service, nice atmosphere

Cons: , none, none
