Message from The Fours

We've been serving Boston's athletes and fans since 1976, providing excellent food and service. Come by for our famous buffalo wings, Shrimp Diane, Boston baked beans or broiled scrod. Have a bite of our "Bobby Orr," the steak and cheese sandwich named for our hockey legend. Chase it all down with a beer and watch the game on more than 40 HD TVs. Or come by after the game--we're right across the street from the Boston Garden. We have tons of sports memorabilia on our walls, including signed photographs, equipment and jerseys. Of course, no Boston sports bar would be compelte without signed Tom Brady, Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Doug Flutie gear. Come by and catch up with friends at The Fours.

The Scene
The ye-olde-English-pub facade looks like it was assembled from a mail-order kit, but the bar inside is fine. Sports-lovers who covet memorabilia will appreciate Fours' decor: Photos of the late and great, along with jerseys and game shirts, cover the walls. Old-school pennants, signed baseballs, boxing gloves, ice skates and more have also worked their way into the scheme.

The Draw
Just a block from the Garden, it's a convenient place to grab food and drinks before the game. On tap: Budweiser, Bass, Harpoon, Guinness, Miller Lite and Sam Adams. For a sports bar, Fours' grub is above average. The shrimp Rafael appetizer is five jumbo shrimp lightly breaded and fried. Among the sandwiches, the Bobby Riggs turkey club and the Bobby Orr steak and cheese are standouts. (Yes, all sandwiches are named for sports legends.)

Key Points

  • Space for Parties
  • Steps from the Boston Garden
  • A Boston Tradition

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Keep an eye on the FleetCenter schedule--when there's a Bruins or Celtics game, expect standing-room-only crowds.

Convenient Sports Bar near North Station

by Barbara E. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,028

Spacious sports bar with good food and atmosphere. Very convenient to North Station and the Boston Garden. You can never go wrong with the traditional appetizers - nachos, wings, etc. Good beer selection too.

Four's Restaurant Boston

by Dolores M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 123

This is what you call a real tradition Boston restaurant. The polite and friendly service. The baked beans and big juicy steaks. The adorable atmosphere or Boston, right there inside of the restaurant.
Yes I would recommend them.

Rude Rude Rude

by NiTr

I've always liked this bar. A TV at every possible location, good beer, decent bar food. But my last experience was so atrocious that I couldn't help but think something's wrong with management. We were a party of six with two yet to arrive. Even though the restaurant was practically empty, the host would only seat four. When our friends arrived, we were forced the move, the waiter literally sighed, actually asked our friend if all he's getting is a dessert, and stomped off like a school child. Our bill came with gratuity already tacked on at 20%. I'm never going there again.

Best Service, Best Chicken Wings, Hot Guys

by libertee2008

This is an excellent bar to watch any sporting event. They have huge flat screen tvs. THE best chicken wings and nachos. The crowd is good. Everybody is pretty loud and into the game so it makes it alot more fun. Alot of hot guys.

Pros: service, bar, value

Cons: none

Good food, good service, big flat screen TV's everywhere

by paule123

Previous reviewer mentioned a lack of large screen TV's - well have no fear, because The Fours now has 42" flat screens everywhere, and a large (10 foot?) projection screen in a corner of the dining room. I was watching Monday Night Football to the left of me and a Red Sox game to the right, while our friendly waitress kept the beer glass full. Food was better than average for a sports bar.

Pros: Big flat screens everywhere, good food, service, price. Lots of hockey memorabilia.

One of the better sports bars in the city.

by schevaiswood

"One of the better sports bars in the city. It can be dead, depending on if there's an event down the street at the Garden."

Every time I visit Boston I make it a point to visit the Fours. The atmosphere is terrific and the food is excellent. The location is top notch..just a block from the Garden.

When in town stay in the North End...go to a game...go to Quincy Markets....go to the Fours!!!! (All in walking distance)

Pros: Great Location

Rude waitress, the Manager was worse

by indiansportsfan

We went over to see the soccer world cup final at the fours. The waitress was incredibly rude and my wife and I felt totally uncomfortable sitting there. At one stage when we asked for the menu she decided she would prove a point and yelled out to the manager across the bar. As we left, we spoke to the manager about her and he was even ruder, starting with- "Why was she rude? Did you order water only?"....Totally not recommended, O'reilly's next door was a much better and nicer bar for sports lovers.

Pros: Not crowded, even for world cup final.

Cons: Dreadful service, the manager was even ruder.

great place

by sportsluvr

Have been going to Fours since the 70's: called Number 4's then, far from yuppie, 1/4 its current size, notty pine paneling, one small bar with wooden stools named after each of the Bruins, sat with Cashman, Espo, Cheevers, Orr, etc. and actually had conversations with them. Some of the same people still work there. Kitchen was a grille at the window streetside, steak and cheese just as good now as then. Great food and atmosphere, reasonable prices for Boston. Non-alcohol you can get 2 meals for less than $40.00. Tons of Small TV's, no room for big ones (too much sports memorabilia on the walls). Plus Boston is the championship city right now, so SI was right naming it #1. Try it!

Pros: great food, great "city" prices, great atmosphere

Cons: Crowded before events, no parking lot, loud

Downhill

by svenseven

Noticed that they don't offer anything but meat sandwiches. Not 1 fish offering...not even tuna. No Veggie burgers, in 2005. Guess they figure every sports fan lives on dead cow.
Got a caesar salad, had very little dressing, which didn't even seem like caesar. Had to ask for bread twice from someone other than our 'waitress' who was busy elsewhere, and we were in a bit of a hurry.
They've upgraded the tv's some, a few bigger & better than before.
The kitchen is very heavy-handed with the salt as well.

Pros: good sports memorabil, good location

Cons: no veggie burger, no fish sandwich, salty everything

Disagree w/ Sports Illustrated

by mlestokes

I most definitely would NOT vote this the #1 Sports Bar in America. The food was very good and the atmosphere was nice w/ the dark wood & all the memorabilia but they need to work on their TVs...all of them were small and there weren't that many. The restaurant was good but go somewhere else if it is the sports bar atmosphere you really want. It was not crowded and we went on a Friday night when the Sox played the Yankees in NYC.

Pros: Food, Not Crowded

a little dissapointing

by gmusan

this place was rated number 1 sports bar in the country by sports illustrated. while it was a really good place, it was NOT the best in the country. they tv's were small and hard to see. the food was great. the bartenders were great. the memorabilia on the walls was great. but come on, how can it be the best with so few tv's with sports on?

Pros: bartenders, food

Cons: parking

Best Sports Bar ?

by allnight

This bar was voted number 1 sports bar in the country. Far from! What makes a good sports bar is the size of the bar(s) and the T.V.s. This bar has not one plasma. All the televisions are small. They have a small bar located upstairs and an average size one downstairs. Only thing worth seeing is the sports memorabilia hanging on the walls.

mmm

by ptop

I'm known amongst my friends as a nacho connoisseur. I love nachos and I get them everywhere I go, so believe me when I tell you that the Fours has the BEST nachos in Boston with their buffalo chicken nachos. They're simply amazing. It's the only thing I get when I go there, but I hear the steak tips are delicious, too.

Pros: buffalo, chicken, nachos

You feel at home here!

by flynnmg

Been coming here for 15 years. It never disappoints. Food, service, the decor(i.e. the great sports stuff all around you!!). I bring my Dad (he's 82!) when we're in for a game; he loves the place!Even when it's a "quiet" in town, always good for a meal. If you have guests in town, they'll love it. The Four's is IT!

Pros: Location, Atmosphere, Service

Great place to see a game.

by splaktar

I've been here about 5 times now and I've had a great time everytime. I saw the Celtics make their 21 point comeback here and it was a blast. Things got crazy after the game was over and people came streaming out of the Fleetcenter. The food has always been top notch (great buffalo chicken sandwhich and wings).

Pros: Location, Great Food, Good Service

Cons: Crowded for games

Try the stk and chs sandwich!

by TGS

I NEVER would have guessed....

You go to The Fours for drinks with friends...
You go to The Fours for BEER....
You go to The Fours to watch sports...

BUT....

You should definitely go to The Fours to EAT! Especially try either their steaktips - wow! - or their steak and cheese sandwich! (your call on adding the 'shrooms, peppers or onions...)

GREAT steak, on soft bread, with wonderful seasoning....

Try it!
