In the fall of 2002, after 17 years on Newbury Street, Davio's relocated to 75 Arlington Street. Handsomely filling the first floor of the legendary Paine Furniture Building in Park Square, the room's urbane sophistication remains true to the integrity of this landmark Back Bay structure while fulfilling owner Steve DiFillippo's restaurant wish list. The space has allowed Davio's to build an enormous open kitchen backed with a bakery where both pastry chef and baker make all of the desserts and breads offered here. A temperature-controlled wine room holds more than 300 different bottles while two full-time wine stewards are employed. "Award of Excellence"--Wine Spectator Magazine

The Scene
With its handsome, high-ceilinged dining room (complete with massive columns, 18-foot windows and a huge open kitchen), Davio's lays claim to having one of the city's most striking restaurant interiors. The welcoming bar area's couches and booths offer a comfy place for an after-work drink, as well as a good vantage point for spotting celebs. (The restaurant is a favorite of visiting athletes.) Attentive servers stay active while traversing the 9,000 square-foot room.

The Food

Davio's menu offers a most sophisticated take on Italian and steakhouse classics. While house favorites like a grilled porterhouse veal chop or lobster risotto with fresh asparagus impress gourmands, fussier diners can opt for divinely rich mac-and-cheese with white truffle oil or the bar menu's steak burgers and thin-crust pizzas. Sinful tiramisu and lemon panna cotta with caramelized pineapples make for delicious dessert options.

Key Points

  • Boston and Philly Locations
  • Open Wine Room with 300 Wines
  • Three Versatile Function Rooms

The Inside Scoop

  1. Parking - The nearby Theater District means area parking is at a premium; take advantage of discounted on-site underground parking or the restaurant's valet service.

Northern Italian Steakhouse

by Lori B. | top100 Top100 | Rank: 20

A five star restaurant all the way. We chose more common dishes. There were many unusual choices that all looked excellent as they passed by. The filet mignon was wonderful and the roasted organic salmon was spectacular (says husband). The Philly cheesesteak spring rolls as an appetizer are very good. Service is outstanding, dress is dressy! Very classy restaurant. If you dine here while the Yankees are in town, you very well may see Derek Jeter...probably not with A-Rod, and that's fine with me!

Simply fantastic food

by TheReviewa

For an upscale evening, a special occasion or just something different, this is your ticket. The classic Italian Steak House has all of the traditional meats, sides and apps you can think of, but it also offers a nice twist on a few fronts. The Philly Cheese Steak spring rolls are simply out of this world and the Eggplant Parmesan side is also fantastic Don't skip the mac-n-cheese and definitely think about springing for the Kobe Beef steak. 10 oz. of phenomenal food! If you are looking for a nice steak dinner, look no further. If steak isn't your thing, there are plenty of non-meat dishes and a host of Italian entrees as well. In my view, this is better than S&W and Grill 23, although the ambiance is different at all three. For something different, sit at the kitchen bar in Davios, and watch the magic unfold before your eyes.

Pros: Food is amazing! Apps, sides, etrees and desert!!!

Cons: can be pricy

Consistantly Great Meal

by YVL

We eat at Davio's 2-3 times a year and always have a good experience. The dining room is beautiful and there is a certain buzz that adds to the meal. It reminds me of a NYC restaurant; in fact the last time we saw Derek Jeter and a bunch of his Yankee teammates.

Our waiters have always been friendly and we trust their suggestions. We typically start with a cocktail and an appetizer or two. My husband usually orders a steak while I tend to gravitate towards healthier fare. The menu is varied with plenty of options so it never feels as though one of us compromised.

Although they have a sizable wine list we are not wine drinkers so I cannot comment on the quality. Deserts are another story; they are a real treat and worth the calories!! When the weather is poor, having parking in the building is a big plus. When the weather is better, we tend to spend the afternoon shopping around Copley Place and Newbury Street before making the short walk over.

Best Italian in Boston

by HouseOfLancaster

My wife and I bring all of our out-of-town guests to Davio's. Without a doubt the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff in the City.

The restaurant is beautiful, the menu is creative with something for every taste, you can park in the building, and it's next to the better hotels and the theater district.

Do yourself a favor, skip the traffic and the hype in the North End and give Davio's your business.

Pros: BIG thumbs up!! Friendly staff, great menu, cool vibe

overall excellent experience

by tdicor

All in all excellent well prepared food and service. However the steak is slightly below a premium steakhouse and the Italian dishes lack a little panache. Our service started a little rough with being ignored in favor of a very large party but after a word to the manager things improved dramatically. There are few "buys" on the wine list - but Boston restaurants regularly jack wine prices way beyond the normal mark-up. One find - the Cain Meritage only 2x retail and excellent!

Pros: excellent food, nice mix of items with a steakhouse bent

Cons: noise level, a few snooty staff

Great food, great atmoshere

by jsternh

Went to Davios with a group of 8. When I originally heard we were going to an italian steakhouse I felt they would do one thing well but not the other. This wasn't the case. The Italian style meals were excellent and the steaks were excellent. Very nice place, upscale, steakhouse type atmosphere, great service, great wine list, expensive but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and service. My only negative was that we were a party of 8 and the table was very crowded. I looked around the room to see if we could get a better table when they we were seated and it didn't appear we could do any better. I would definately recommend however if you are a large party, speak with the manager before and make sure your table meets your needs.

Pros: food, service, winelist, knowledgeable waitstaff

Overall, pretty good

by foodagooda

I recently went to Davio's with my boyfriend and his parents for his birthday. I made a reservation through OpenTable and we were seated immediately. (Actually, we arrived late, and called the restaurant, who graciously agreed to hold our table for 15 minutes until we made it there. ) The service was solicitous (almost a bit too much) but informative and attentive. Our waiter made excellent suggestions with regard to a nice wine to try, but forgot our sides completely and didn't seem too interested in checking up on us when a larger party arrived shortly after we did. The food itself was well done - high scale without being intimidating. I had the filet, which was excellent; my boyfriend had the r@ck of lamb and loved it; his mother had the jumbo shrimp and his stepdad had the sirloin - both were thrilled. Dessert was basically a warm apple crustado with vanilla ice cream that underwhelmed. For a tab that came to over $300, it was a mixed bag. I'd probably try the new Ruth's Chris Steakhouse before I went back to Davio's, simply for comparison purposes.

Pros: high quality ingredients, excellent presentation, knowledgable staff

Cons: costly parking, inconsistent attention to order requests

stuck up waiters

by sweenest

We were a party of around 10 people. Everyone ordered a meal except for one person who ordered a salad. The waiter encouraged him to order a dish but he explained that he didn't have a huge appetite. The waiter gave him a very arrogant look and left. All the dishes came except for the salad. My friend, wanting to see just how arrogant the server was, never requested the salad because he wanted to see how long it would take the waiter to realize he was the only one at the table without a plate in front of him. The waiter by but never brought the salad. Meanwhile, the salad mysteriously appeared on the bill. When we explained that the salad had never come the waiter smirked and said that he would make it right away. When we said we no longer wanted the salad since we were ready to leave, he made it anyways with the same arrogant smirk. I can't say that with service like that, I would want to go back.

Good Reliable Spot

by sgourmandp

Not romantic, more business like in ambience, the food is good if you are looking for a hearty steak or "man's sized meal".

Generally very good

by philipguarino

The one annoying thing about this restaurant is that the acoustics are horrendous. It is impossible to carry on a conversation! Also, some of the food is Americanized--e.g. Eggplant caponata with sugar (!!) or the fruit soaked in corn syrup (??)...

Pros: chef talent, wine list

Cons: noise level

food and wine whine

by jimweiler

In spite of the delicious food, dinner was marred by the outrageously expensive wine list. Only 3 bottles of red under $40, 60% of the list over $100. If you don't drink Davios is great, otherwise there are other restaurants with food as good and affordable wine as good.

Pros: atmosphere, food

Great new space

by anonymous7

I had not been to Davio's new location and I was very pleased when I did go. My companion and I began by having a glass of wine and a calamari appetizer at the bar. The bar area was very roomy and a relaxing place to sit. The service was excellent. We proceeded to the dining room to have our main course. The sommalier was a very nice woman who really took a lot of care in selecting the perfect wine to go with our dinner. The food was excellent. I especially loved the roasted chicken dish that I was served. We did get dessert, a chocolate torte and it was wonderful. I would highly recommend Davio's for a relaxing and delicious dining experience.

good times

by mells

I like this place. Upscale. slightly uppity. but fun and good food and great wine and cheese. It exudes class, which is very refreshing for Boston! My friends went there and had a semi private room and it was wonderful we ate dinner for 3 and half hours and never felt rushed.

Pros: atmosphere, food/drinks, cleanliness

Cons: slightly snobby, expensivo!, some food overrated

Excellent service

by landshark

Starting with the pleasant hostess, the service was excellent. We weren't seated right away (they were waiting for some tables to turn), but she handled it very well. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the dishes and the wines, and made some excellent suggestions. The food was very good (I had the veal, my date had the salmon), well prepared, g(good presentation, appropriate portions) but not mind-blowing (given the price). Time and effort went into the preparations; the soup I had was served at the exact right temp., and when I got up for a minute tright after the server brought our entrees, she asked if I wanted them brought back and kept warm while I was gone (I declined) - good attention to detail. The only slight negative was the noise level; the crowd buzz was a little higher than the ideal dull murmer.

Pros: decor, service

Cons: a little noisy
