I have to chime in to agree with criticism of the Brookline location, and to champion the terrific location in Sudbury, where the sushi and service are always what they should be.
Our favorite thing at Sudbury is the "Tokyo Tower". Brookline has never heard of it and doesn't care.

Ratings_icons Fantastic Sushi

If you are looking for an authentic and delicious place for sushi, you'll find it at Fugakyu. They have an incredible selection. The staff is very helpful and the decor is what you would expect of a sushi place.

Ratings_icons Fugakyu doesn't live up to its prices

Fugakyu has a great reputation. Why, I don't know. The Japanese food is okay, but nothing spectacular. I've had better at far cheaper restaurants. But the real problem here is the service. First of all, you can't make reservations. This is incredibly annoying because you may have an extremely long wait- it is a popular restaurant. Secondly, the waiters can be rude. Ours wasn't, but a record three dishes were spilled by waiters in the little room we were in. Thirdly, the service is not prompt.
Fugakyu is a beautiful restaurant, with lovely tatami rooms and booths. There is a pretty fishpond and wonderful artwork. Unfortunately, there are also lots of other rooms, like the one we were seated in, that are not attractive. We could have waited an hour for a booth, but we were starving.
Basically, if you have the time and the tolerance to go to Fugakyu, you can get a lovely booth and drink in a great atmosphere. Otherwise you may be stuck in a back room with a waiter who breaks dishes on the floor.

PROS: Atmosphere, if you can get it
CONS: Expensive, food's not that great, service is bad, no reservations

Ratings_icons The Sushi Experience

Claire M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,071

Fugakyu is one of Boston's best sushi places. An authentic experience that will have you coming back for more. Upon walking in, the customer is greeted warmly and escorted to either the sushi bar with delicious pieces revolving on a belt to be grabbed and eaten, or to one of the private tables behind screens. While the atmosphere is festive, the low tables and serene waitstaff make this an easy and enjoyable sushi experience. Custom rolls are available, and the staff answers all questions. Try the Japanese beers offered, or the sake--either hot or cold. This is a popular place, so call ahead for reservations. Parking is on street with meters.

PROS: Excellent food, service, location.
CONS: Can be crowded
