I have to start by saying that this is one of the best restaurant interiors around. It is quiet, relaxing, and visually wonderful. Upon entering on my first visit, I was sure based on the care given to the atmosphere that it would live up to its reputation.

Unfortunately, that is where the good news ends. I have been three times, and have been underwhelmed each time. The first visit I had sushi - several rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and one hand roll. While the fish wasn't bad enough to make anyone ill, it didn't smack of freshness. Fish was cut along the grain so it was not tender. Presentation was sloppy. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't good.

On my second visit, I tried cooked food. Shumai were okay, though I have had much better. Ton Katsu was tough, dry, and overcooked, served on slightly dried out rice. It was actually unpleasant to eat.

On my third visit, I tried the sushi again at the behest of friends who love the place. While it wasn't as wretched as the first time (the fish was pretty good), it still didn't stack up to many cheaper, uglier places. The knife work was once again nothing short of lousy, and the presentation, while better than the first time, left much to be desired.

If I were in the neighborhood and wanting sushi, I'd head over to Yasu instead. They are Korean (the staff at Fugakyu are Chinese), and their sushi and cooked Japanese food are better, and they have decent Korean as well!

No reservations taken here, which means waiting in long long lines.

Next problem, sushi here isn't anything that outstanding, its okay, but worth the price - I'm not sure, to me, no, definitely not.

Service - it's okay, but for what I'm paying, I expect better service.

Overall, underwhelmed by this place, probably wouldn't come back if I'm paying for it.

Food was tasty, lot's of selection on the menu, great drinks, service is consistent and reliable. We sat in a private room with excellent ambiance. I particularly enjoyed taking off my shoes and having a full cultural experience.

Great place to meet after work- Great Sushi, appetizers, and conversation opportunities. Always a welcoming smile. Fun in the bar too- bartenders Michael & Mike know their drinks, the menu and the current (Boston/NY) sports scene. Always a pleasure to visit and dine! Must reccomend!

I've been to Fugakyu twice and I've eaten sushi from many different restaurants in many cities. Fugakyu is the only place where I've actually become sick from eating sushi. First, I think their sushi tastes pretty good which is why I went a second time (I thought getting sick the first time was a fluke). Specifically, I like their rainbow maki, ebi mango maki, lobster maki and spicy tuna. Their oyster tempura maki and volcano maki are just okay. I've tried a few others but can't remember them right now. Second, I like the layout and decorations of their restaurant. Try to get a private booth, otherwise you'll be sat at a table in a small room packed tightly with other tables. Third, I dislike the service. The servers aren't very friendly and they're very pushy. This is not the type of place to enjoy your time as they are looking to turn tables as soon as possible. Also, we went to the bar to get drinks while waiting for the table and the bartender totally ignored us. Fourth, the lobster sashimi is not for the feint of heart. They cut the lobster's tail and claws away from the body and place the head at the top of the dish. The lobster is obviously dead, but its nervous system is still working and it was really weird eating this lobster's raw meat while its severed head continued to move. Fifth, I can't say why I've gotten sick both times I've tried Fugakyu but it's happened and I will never go back now.

I've been to Fugakyu several times and have always had great service and good food. The sushi is very fresh. It is a fun restaurant to go to with both small and large groups. They have several different seating arrangements from the bar to small tables to larger seating areas with screened doors (highly recommend for groups!)

My favorite dish to order is the Makimono Combo with three types of rolls. I also love the edamame and miso soup to start. I have gone with friends who have ordered several different items (sushi, teriyaki, and katsu) on the menu and everyone has been very satisfied.

We were told there was a 30 minutes wait for a table so we went to the bar for a drink, $9 per glass of wine, after a few minutes two stools came free at the bar so we put our drinks on the counter and sat down - the bar man, Mike, put his fingers into our glasses and took them, when we called at him he just slid the drinks back to us and said sorry! we asked could he replace? And he jsut again sorry it was a mistake - he eventually replaced what was left in the drinks! When we wanted another glass he would not serve us, he got super aggressive and asked us to leave. We called the manager but she just vindicated his actions! It was a shocking experience and would never return.

most of my first dates with a boy end up here. i am always recommending it. it's nice inside, and the food is awesome. service can be good or awful. one time she didn't check back on us at all, and i had to order another drink through a different server. last week, went there the service was awesome. bill was 50 and my date left a 20 dollar tip. worth a try though.

Well, actually, there might be better, but this is one of the best i have eaten in the area.
the slices are really thick, and the fish are really fresh.
i always take my friends out here, and when i was in high-school, i use to come here for lunch during my free-blocks at least three times a week!!

the interior is really elegant, and this restaurant was actually shot a few time in films.

pretty cool place

I've eaten at Fugakyu at least a dozen times by now and have never had a bad experience. On off nights there's never more than a 10 minute wait, if that, and Thurs-Sat nights the wait is never as long as they say it will be. The most I've waited is 25 minutes and that only gives you an opportunity to check out their fabulous bar with its trendy but unpretentious atmosphere and 2 flatscreen TVs. The service is attentive but no-nonsense and the food is usually served quickly and as soon as it's ready. If you want your mind blown you must order the spicy tuna salad. Trust me. You'll go back for more.

I have to chime in to agree with criticism of the Brookline location, and to champion the terrific location in Sudbury, where the sushi and service are always what they should be.
Our favorite thing at Sudbury is the "Tokyo Tower". Brookline has never heard of it and doesn't care.

The staff hardly speaks english nor can anyone decipher what they are saying. The food is average to good but with sky rocket prices. The wait is long.
All the good reviews are from people who like "fancy" rolls , I prefer sashimi and plain ol' good service with a smile.
Go there once to experience it and then head over to oishi for Excellence

Not bad.. Not bad.. We went there on a tuesday to celelbrate 3 birthdays (mine and couple other friends)!! We were around 10 people, so, we requested their private room.. That was nice.. We were left to ourselves for the most part..

For the food part, we got some Sake (cold), seaweed salad and Miso soup for appetizers.. The Miso soup was really good.. The salad was OK... No great shakes.. and the Sake was also OK..

Then for our main course, I ordered theri pineapple and fried swee potato maki roll and it was surprisingly tasty.. Just the right amount of tangyness from the pineapple and crunch from the sweet potato and ofcourse the pickled ginger and soy sauce provided the "sushi" taste to it..

Some people also ordered a "Sushi/Sashimi" boat, which wasn't bad either..

Their service was nice.. They seated us as soon as our party got there even though we were a few minutes late.. When some of us in the party got their early, we were offered some hot tea while we waited for the rest of our friends.. That was a really nice touch.. There is also a huge bar area with nice couches and all to wait in..

Would I go there again? Sure.. Like I said, we were there on a tuesday, so parking wasn't really a problem.. I could see it becoming an issue on fridays and saturdays..

Like all Sushi places, it was on the expensive side, but, I didn't care.. It was my birthday, so I wasn't paying ;-)...

I lived in Boston from 1999 - 2002 and during that period I went to this restaurant several times. Each time was a great experience - fantastic sushi/sashimi and nice waitress talent that made the meal even more satisfying. I returned just last Friday and things are very different and I don't like what I see. To start, the hostess "team" (there were 3 people standing there) are useless. First, they don't understand English at all, which is a bit strange in Boston. I asked if I could park in front of the restaurant since no meters were present and all I got back were blank stares (from all 3). I repeated my question 3 times and still no response. So, not getting an answer, I just walked around to the sushi bar and plopped down. The waitress was very nice. I sat there, had a cold sake and the sushi/sashimi lunch. Not once during the entire meal did one sushi chef make eye contact with me, greet me, give me a taste of something, say goodbye, nothing. There were 3 chefs, the place was empty and they stood there staring at the ground. Usually when you sit at a sushi bar you can at least expect to have some level of service from the chefs but these guys clearly don't want to be there. Now, to the food. The miso soup was just ok, the salad was not great and the sushi/sashimi were above average. I agree with a previous post that I was very turned off by the size of the tuna sashimi. I received 3 pieces each a half-inch thick. I actually gagged trying to eat one so I took the rest home and sauteed it quickly just to be able to get it down. Shouldn't have to do that. As I read through all the reviews, it's clear something happened around 2003/2004 that changed this place. Either their success has spoiled them or they have new, and not appreciated, management.

I was recommended to this restaurant by a co-worker of mine and since have told others to try it out. I finally got an afternoon off of the busy brunch service of where I work and ordered take out from them. They took my information in a professional manor, repeated back what I had said to ensure the information was correct and told me it was to be one hour for my food. 27 minutes later my food arrived. I felt just like a kid in a candy shop opening up my bag of take-out. HUGE platter of sushi, hot delicious soup, and a garden fresh salad. I had to stop myself from eating the soup and salad so I could save room for the main course. As to no suprise I couldn't finish all of the food but will be a great snack for later. I would hughly recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi!

I had bad exprienceS with FUGAKYU, especially in DELIVERY sevices.!!! this restaurant doesn't have a professional management at all(the employees cannot speak english fluently and also I need to repeat 4-5 times so that they could understand)..First, I ordered for delivery and gave all the informations CLEARLY to them, unfortunately, they had a problem with one of my information, and they did NOTHING! i was waiting forr 2 hours!! Second, my friend ordered me a delivery from fugakyu and he paid the foods by phone. 30 minutes later, the driver came and asked me for a proof. I called fugakyu and told them that my friend wasn't in my house and he just ordered it for me and I called my friend to confirmed it AGAIN, but they still don't care and forced me to use my credit card and charge me, instead of my friend's credit card. What a service, huh!!
I am very disappointed with the service and the fact the food is STANDARD. So, find a BETTER japanese restaurant with A PROFESSIONAL SERVICE...(Douzo, O ya, Oishii)!

Totally disappointed with the experience at fugakyu, I don't want to pick a nice waiter/waitress just like to win a lottery, I don't want to spend money to beg their smile, and I don't want to be an actor when someone filming me while I am eating, I am get enough to be a idiot, and I am curious why they are still existing in there, WEIRD.

NOT when i last dine there with my husband. waiting time was just right considering the size of the restaurant. after a long walk around to the 3rd floor, we were seated at a four person table and was greeted by our waiter .Our dinner was served after about 15-20 minutes after our waiter describe their specials for the evening. He recommended us a sake flight that blend very well with our apps and sushi and to get our sashimi thin slice for only 1 or 2 dollars more. fresh sushi and very tasty dessert. i recommend green tea tempura ice cream. Our check arrive after a pleasant dinner and short conversation with our waiter. He kindly ask for our valet ticket and our car is ready to go outside. We would recommend to make a reservations for the third floor. Nicely decorated, great food, professional and polite services . We will return in the future!

Im a pretty avid sushi eater, and I have been to Fugakyu upwards of 15 times. I think I go back for the abuse! The service is not exactly friendly, and they get pretty annoyed when you ask them about their specialty rolls. On a few different occasions I have had not so fresh fish, and the Shabu Shabu is certainly not worth the cost. I don?t have a problem paying for good sushi, actually there is a restaurant t in Medford, Yoki, that is very expensive, but its great, at Fugakyu this is not the case. It is extremely overpriced, and they have a bad habit of seating people on top of each other. I think I return each time hoping that it will live up to the hype, but it never does :( - skip it!

I was rather disappointed with the blocks of sashimi slabs they served when I ordered the Sashimi-Sushi deluxe Boat with my parents and husband. You can tell that the restaurant is not overseen by Japanese staff who should know that you cannot serve slices of tuna, salmon and other raw fish cut in 2 inch-thick pieces! We ordered the Deluxe Boat, thinking it would be a great specialty, but it was to our great disappointment and it was even grotesque trying to eat the slab of sashimi, feeling like you're really eating big chunks of raw fish. (And I love sashimi and sushi, too, so I know what they are supposed to be like.) We made reservations, and though we requested to be upstairs, they made us wait for over 30 minutes, and still we could not be seated. They eventually placed us in the first floor entrance row, which was not so pleasant, due to the noise of the reception and the hovering of the customers, looking over as to what we were ordering, as they waited to be seated. The girls do not smile at you, and it was overall not a very pleasant experience. The prices are high for the quality of the food and service. It is too bad since it is so close to my house! I recommend that they get a real Japanese sushi/sashimi chef who knows what it is to service real Japanese food, with service and politeness.

Pros: The upstairs room with the screen view is somewhat different

Cons: Overly priced, terrible sashimi, service, no parking, possibility of being seating in a gloomy room.

As a foodie, I love trying out new restaurants and often find myself returning to the same favorite ones. Fugakyu is NOT one of them but we wanted sushi in that area so we ended up there. I read other reviews complaining about the non-Japanese staff factor. I already knew that this restaurant is owned and operated by Chinese people. So it's not 'authentic' Japanese (almost impossible to find in Boston), but I expect my server to understand the minimal English, as in, what I'm ordering. We ordered shrimp AND vegetable tempura(ONE appetizer). She brought us just the vegetable tempura. After we each ate one piece, we looked at eachother and asked, "wait, didn't we get the shrimp & veg?" When I asked the waitress to bring us just the shrimp tempura because she didn't get it right to begin with, she brought us what we ORIGINALLY ordered and gave us the attitude like WE messed up. NO, NO, NO. WE KNOW what we ordered. SHE did not speak good English, other items we ordered, we had to repeat them couple of times.
End result : they charged us for two separate tempuras, when they should've only charged us for the original order = what we wanted. They wouldn't take it off the bill. They even went as far as to insult us and asked us why we ate the one piece if it was wrong. Uhm...because we were hungry and were in the middle of talking?? I have NEVER been to a restaurant (overpriced and overrated one like this) where they would question their patrons! Fugakyu is a Chinese-run business that tries to make every dollar possible. I have no idea why people in Boston rave about this place. Just because you wear a Kimono, doesn't make you Japanese. I have never had such terrible service from a Japanese restaurant. It's just unheard of, that they would fight their customer for their own mistake. Heinous.

I don't understand why the people give them 5 stars rating each time when so many guests serious complained, it makes me sick... , if it is worth it, the marvelous service attitude and delight sushi should be served in the whole restaurant at opening time, not only for the specific area and specific waiter, meanwhile, shold I reserve the corner seat with a smiling waiter/waitress before I go in? NO, if you give them 5 STARS rating, then there should be less DISSAPOINTING OVERVIEW RATING on it, please, try to improve the disorganizing hospitality and sushi, then customers will give the fair rating, not themself.

I don't know what the reviewer below is talking about - this place has always been a consistenly great experience for me and one of the restaurants that I usually take friends from out of town to. I believe it's also open pretty late, which is nice. If you have to wait, there is a really fun little bar to the left where you can order some exotic cocktails while you wait for your table. I haven't been able to sit in any of the private rooms yet, but I enjoy the breezy Japanese atmosphere in the main floor of the restaurant (it's a little corny, but it's cool). The sushi is amazing - I love the Unagi and the Spicy Tuna here but there are a ton of other rolls and nigiri that are really good as well. Also, a good sake selection - last time I had a flight of sakes to try and it was great and each sake was a generous pour as well. I love this place and recommend it for groups or for out of town guests!

For those of you who don't mind throwing around a little cash, this restaurant boasts an authentic Japanese dining experience, complete with your own person dining room (enclosed with Japanese doors and all), excellent food, and great service. What's great about my experience at Fugakyu was that a Japanese exchange student who i am good friends with was able to fully explain to me all the exotic dishes on the menu. Chicken, Beef, Pork, Sushi, Springrolls, Soups, and Noodles are this restaurants forte. Any of them are a good choice.

We started out with Sukiyaki, a delicious concoction of thinly sliced beef simmered in a skillet or pan in the sukiyaki sauce with many vegetables and other ingredients. It was absolutely fantastic. For the main course, I ordered the Yaki Udon noodles topped with a breaded chicken cutlet. This is not your typical bowl of noodles. They are very flavorful, even more so since they sit in a sweet Miso broth. By the time I was finished I was stuffed. For the money, this was the best dining experience I've had thus far in Boston.

I'd suggest dressing in a golf shirt and dockers when dining here. Though dressy attire is not required, why not look classy if you decide to spend this much on a great dinner anyway? They are also available by delivery through Foodler. A must-try for Japanese fans.

I'm sure this is beginning to sound like a broken record... but Fugakyu really is wonderful. Not only is the sushi incredibly fresh, well assembled, and downright flavorful and complex (well, at least for sushi outside of the West Coast), the menu is a bit more diverse than a lot of sushi joints around here. I loved the Idaho roll with the sweet potato. Several other roles with teriyaki salmon and some good combinations of flavors really stood out on my last visit. The service is friendly and efficient. It's very professional and exactly what I want. Service for groups in small rooms has been as good as at tables in the main dining areas. When going out for sushi, it'd tough not to choose Fugakyu.

We just went to Fugakyu for the first time. The wait was not obscene, since we went for lunch. The Tatami booths are wonderfully delightful with an air of privacy. The appetizers were above average. The Kani Katsu was good. However, the SUSHI is the best. The Louisiana Roll is excellent but quite obscure. The Caterpiller roll is great for eel lovers. Dessert was excellent, being the Tempura Ice Cream. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and tasty.

It was our 2-d year Wedding Anniversary, my husband just got a position at Harvard - many reasons to celebrate! So we chose Fugakyu for that. Husband dressed up in suit, I made beautiful hair - so, we appeared at the front door, expecting a friendly Japanese smile. This bi.ch at the front door didn't even look at us for about 3 minutes, even though she saw we just came in and we were standing there like some fools. And then she said how may I help you? After that, she ordered to the other servant to sit us, at a certain place and that woman was hesitant, and she almost yelled at her to do so. When we got to the place - we realized why, it was not romantic at all! In a little room were cramped 5 tables, and she put us in the middle - we were so exposed! Being in such environment - it is very not worth it. The whole atmosphere of service is very tense and reading bad reviews about service there I have to say it is very noticeable. If you are planning something important and don't wont it to be affected by such a ridiculous thing - as service, choose somewhere else to go. It might just spoil your mood. Sushi and food is good, and I a not discussing it here. BUT WHEN YOU GO TO A RESTORANT - FOOD AND SERVICE IS TO ESSENCIALS OF OVERALL EXPERIENCE, YOU CAN'T ENJOY THE FOOD WITH THE BAD SERVICE, AND YOU CAN'T ENJOY THE SERVICE WITHOUT GOOD FOOD. THEY HAVE TO WORK ON SERVICE - NOBODY WANTS TO SEE A MISERABLE FACE OF SERVANTS - THIS SHOULD BE AN EXPAMPLE OF AMBIENCE AND JAPANEESE HOSPITALITY.

If I could afford it, I'd come here all of the time! Creative and great quality sushi. Nigiri is good but I think you have to take advantage of the many rolls that they offer. Service is great and I love the rooms with the sliding doors if you want a little more privacy.

My boyfriend and I have tried almost every Japanese restaurant in the immediate Boston area. This was our first time at Fugakyu. Overall we really liked it. I got several pieces of Nigiri, a house special roll, seaweed salad and miso soup. He had shrimp and veggie tempura and soup. First of all, portions of the salad and soup were miniscule, tasty, but nothing particularly special. The Nigiri were huge and really really good - loved it. The tempura was incredibly beautiful, colorful, plentiful, and super flavorful. I have not seen anything like this anywhere else in Boston. They also have a nice selection of Sake. A couple things bothered us, though. First, the undersized portions of the appetizers. Secondly, our server seemed skeptical of our original order and suggested we get more food. We ordered a little more and ended up with way too much food. We are big eaters, too, so I don't know what that was about.

I really hate to do this but I have to give them a 10, if for no other reason than Fu has consistently had the tastiest, freshest sushi I've had in Boston. I don't care if the restuarant is operated by Chinese, Japanese or whoever else...the food is great. Well, let me clarify that...the SUSHI is great. Aside from a few of their appetizers, I've never ordered anything but sushi there. (I keep meaning to, but the sushi is just too good to pass up.) I've also heard lots of poor service complaints from friends, and occiasionally I pick up an attitude vibe from the people at the front desk, but more often than not our waitresses have been pleasant and friendly. Perhaps we've just been lucky, but I find that if you make a little effort to be friendly with them, the service improves. My boyfriend and I have gone on kicks where we'll eat there every week (sometimes it's been twice a week) for months. It's addictive. As for the prices, they are defiantely on the higher end for sushi, but by no means astronomical. I've spent about the same $$ elsewhere on sushi that was horrible by comparison. All that being said, I dont regard Fugakyu as a "special occaision" restaurant. The ambience is cool at the sushi bar and in the tatami rooms (in that "theme park" kind of way), but its too loud and packed to make it a special night if thats what you're after. If you get there early, like between 5-6 there's little to no wait. We've gone in early just the two of us and asked for a tatami room and gotten one, so they can be accomidating when it suits them. And they do take reservations, so you can avoid the whole wait thing altogether if that's a concern for you. But if you should get stuck with an hour wait, (cus you're like me and start craving sushi later in the evening and want it to be worth your $) park your butt at the bar for an hour and chill out, that's what its there for.

I have gone to fugakyu for 6 years now, ever since I discovered it my freshman year of college. I take people out there for special dinners and up until this year I have gotten pretty good service. Don't get me wrong - the sushi is just fabulous and the ambience AMAZING. But the service could be better. First off, the people at the front desk have ego's bigger than the size of the restaurant. I made reservations the Friday before Labor Day for Four people for my brother's going away dinner. We unexpectedley had another guest who was coming, so I called about an hour ahead to see if we could change it to five people. They told us to come into the restaurant so they could see what they could do. We arrived half an hour early and were told that since we had five people we would have to wait a whole hour and a half to get a seat. I made reservations specifically so I could avoid the mad rush. I asked him if there was anyway we could just pull up one more chair, we don't mind being cramped but I really wanted to take my brother here. They refused, saying they couldn't change it. So we were about to walk out and suddenly the host changed tune saying, you know I can get you seated in probably 30 minutes. but you will have to come back and check. so we checked in half an hour and he said we had to wait another hour. We left because it was too long. I went back last week with a group of people and it was great. We were seated in a private room, with a nice waitress. The only thing was that she only came in to bring us food or drinks, she never asked how we were doing, and we could never flag her down bc she never came by. For a "house of exquisite elegance" you would think that they would do better to standardize their service at the front of the house. I will keep coming though because I love the food and am convinced that the service can only go up from here.

Id like to update my post. Fugakyu generously rectified the situation and quickly. The management was courtious and understanding. They deserve credit for making the situation right. As well the informed me they do not film people while eating. Do note that although we were treated horribly..the food as always was perfect.

I still cant explain to you my disapointment. I had just gotten off a flight from LA to logan and the first experience i wanted to have once again in Boston was dinner at Fugaku. It is a beautiful meal.

However as you can see by the post below...I have never been quite so offended while dining out and still rank this experience the single worst.

We spent $170. When paying our bill we noticed 2 miso soups we had ordered that were not delivered..the waitress brought over a women in a suit who told us--- get this....."THEY FILMED US AND SAW US EAT THE SOUP".......we wanted the two soups removed ($4) and they refused and completly insulted us by telling us we lied. On top of that the Manager stuck her tongue out at us... Wow...just wow.....what happened and were were we...we walked down to the front to speak to another Manager who told us she was ashamed however did not offer to do anything....I said no prob...enjoy the soup....removed the $35 tip and told her the rude manager could leave the waitress a tip.... I was a regular...but this is the worst most odd experience i have ever had dining out. Can you imagine loosing people over miso soup. And who films people while they eat? Total invasition of privacy....I will never return.

Ask for a table away from the cameras.

Of the various sushi places I've gone to in the greater Boston area, there aren't many I am particularly impressed with. Fugakyu is one of them. Service is great - friendly, courteous, and timely.
Food comes out quickly as well, and it's good. The fish has been fresher than most other places I've been to, and they will happily deal with special requests.
The restaurant itself is very nice, with an atmosphere that you could take a date to.
The only issues I've found is that it's pricey (although you do get what you pay for) and parking is not particularly convenient.

(Incidentally, I saw a comment here about how the food is bad because the chef is Chinese, not Japanese. First of all, this is a trend I've seen everywhere from New Haven CT to Chicago to LA to Pittsburgh. While it is Japanese cuisine good cooking isn't genetic. Tell Iron Chef Sakai his french cooking is bad because he's Japanese - or for that matter tell Royce Gracie his jujitsu is bad because he's Brazilian. :) Food is food man. Break out the chopsticks and enjoy!)

The food here is very good. It's a beatiful restaurant too. I recommend sitting by their cool sushi bar. Service here is very good, but with all this good stuff there comes a price you must pay for to get it.

Pros: Good food

Cons: Very expensive

This place has delicious appetizers and sushi. The fish is extremely fresh that it makes it hard to go back to cheap sushi. Other appetizers that are good are the unagi sandwich (for the eel lovers), spicy seafood or tuna salads, all the kaiyakis are quite tasty. They also have a wide variety of sushi rolls.

For parties of 5 or more you can even try to request a room when making a reservation. The atmosphere is quite nice. For birthday parties you can reserve a tatami room so you can be as loud as you want.

One setback however is that they recently raised the price and the waitstaff may or may not be friendly depending on your luck. It is also extremely busy even on a week night sometimes. They do serve late, so sushi for a midnight snack is always good. If you live in the brookline area you could try delivery!

Last weekend, I went to eat there with my husband. The food was excellent, as usual, but I never thought their service was up to par. I never really cared or did anything about it because all I wanted to do was go there to eat. However, something happened in the restaurant that completely shocked me. It really made me change my perception of the management team within this restaurant. As I was eating, I saw 2 waitresses, one of whom was my waitress that night, got into an argument with some customers. My waitress decides that it would be okay to swear at the customers. She screamed at some customers right in the middle of the restaurant. I was shocked and appalled that she would even think of doing something like that. It was completely inappropriate and absolutely inappropriately. All the other customers around me were shaking their heads in dismay. Now here's the part that made me furious: after the dispute was over, she walked over to my table and said, "what the hell at you starring at? It's none of your business." I was speechless and decided that it was not worth my time to get into an argument with. What horrible service! The management team really needs to fire this employee and find ones who will provide the appropriate service that customers pay for.

As a native Californian, I am usually very particular about sushi... having said that, FuGaKyu is pretty good and well worth their prices. The atmosphere and decent service only add to the value. They don't seem to offer the usual complimentary appetizers (miso soup, edamame, etc.) but the only major con is the wait and this is usually indicative of how good the place is - definitely recommend making reservations (especially on a weekend night).

I've been to FuGakYu 5 or 6 times, and each time I try something different, I am not dissapointed. The food is absolutely amazing, though the menu can be pretty daunting the first time you look at it. The unagi (eel) sounds frightening, but it has become my favorite. Service has always been very good, although it can be alittle slow on particularly busy nights. Expect a very long wait (of up to two hours) on weekends and some weeknights! Fortunately, the wait is worth it. Prices can be pretty expensive, but Japanese food is usually very expensive anywhere you go. There's a tiny sushi place around the corner with very similar prices to FuGakYu without the atmosphere. The decor is absolutely beautiful and authentic.

I have lived in Japan, and I can vouch that this place has wonderful sushi! The salmon sashimi is simply THE BEST I have ever had (really, even compared to restaurants in Japan!). Yellowtail sashimi is also great. The pieces are big, juicy and FRESH! I also always get the Alaskan maki. As for appetizers, Sake Kinuta Maki is perfect -- I highly recommend it. The shitake soup or the lobster miso soup are a must! Also, for the brave, ankimo special is delicious. Also, their special drinks are really good. Try the Traffic Light -- it's really awesome.
Bottom line - my friends and I go to Fugakyu all the time, and we haven't been disappointed yet. Yes, the lines are long (although not if you come on Sunday or earlier in the day) and the service is lacking sometimes. But the food is WORTH IT!!!

SEA BASS -- miso glaze was boring, served with boiled carrots and veggies that made no sense.

GLAZED DUCK -- Japanese?? The poor fowl is wondering why it had to surrender its life for this dry, bland, unconvincing duck dish.

UDON -- Here's where I'm mad. The broth was horrible and the noodles came out of a plastic bag (you can't fool me.)

SASHIMI -- too expensive and the uni (sea urchin) was horrible. The ama ebi (sweet shrimp) was so so.

Anyone notice how long their menu is? It's like an upscale Chinese take-out, no? (Take-out style: 10 folds in the menu with 200 choices.) Owned by Chinese people (like myself) No respectable restaurant has menus that extensive. The restaurant has no focus, no theme.

Fugakyu has a great reputation. Why, I don't know. The Japanese food is okay, but nothing spectacular. I've had better at far cheaper restaurants. But the real problem here is the service. First of all, you can't make reservations. This is incredibly annoying because you may have an extremely long wait- it is a popular restaurant. Secondly, the waiters can be rude. Ours wasn't, but a record three dishes were spilled by waiters in the little room we were in. Thirdly, the service is not prompt.
Fugakyu is a beautiful restaurant, with lovely tatami rooms and booths. There is a pretty fishpond and wonderful artwork. Unfortunately, there are also lots of other rooms, like the one we were seated in, that are not attractive. We could have waited an hour for a booth, but we were starving.
Basically, if you have the time and the tolerance to go to Fugakyu, you can get a lovely booth and drink in a great atmosphere. Otherwise you may be stuck in a back room with a waiter who breaks dishes on the floor.

PROS: Atmosphere, if you can get it
CONS: Expensive, food's not that great, service is bad, no reservations
