Forget the Coop - Harvard Bookstore is the best bookstore in Harvard square. Handwritten staff recommendations dot the shelves and it's always interesting reading their opinions (if you can decipher some of the handwriting). The store also has a frequent buyers program that rewards you for shopping there and a fairly big used books section downstairs. Some advice: the used books section is nice to browse but if you're looking for a specific book, don't even try. Just ask someone who works there.

Great place to get a good read. I come here when I have time to browse and see what's new. They always have the newest stuff available. And they get good speakers as well. Events are well planned and a treat to attend.

I love this bookstore. You walk in and can smell the particular aroma of books. There are displays of notable recently published books, and shelves and shelves of quality books. It has a bargain basement with very cheap used and new books. There is basically nowhere to sit and read a book, but it is still nice to browse.

Don't be fooled by the name, this is an independently owned and operated bookstore. The staff here is friendly and very knowlegeable about what they're selling. They also host wonderful author events at the bookstore and at other venues throughout Boston. Also has a frequent-buyer program that is free to all.

PROS: Great staff
CONS: no parking

This is my favorite bookstore in the Boston area. Stocks hard-to-find scholarly books. There's a great selection of remainders, and occasionally some real finds in the used book section. The staff are helpful and will order anything if it's not in stock, and the frequent buyers' program and weekly emails about readings and select books in the store is always a pleasant read. Highly recommended.

harvard bookshop is simply one of the best shops around. With a large selection of well selected books and in a clean, well organized space, the shop makes browsing a pleasure. They specialize in current releases in all categories -- especially scholarly subjects such as philosophy, history, area studies, as well as literature, etc. In the bottom level, they have remainders (very good titles) and used books (which are pretty decent) -- though not nearly as good as Raven Used Books a few blocks away on John F. Kennedy Street. Actually, the two together, make going to Harvard Square for book buying the perfect location (not to mention the other 6 or so general and speciality shops in the square).

In Short
The service at this local bookselling landmark is excellent, the atmosphere inviting and the stock wide-ranging and full of unexpected and obscure treasures. While many of the major chains keep things simple and order…
