Come on over to the Cactus Club for Tex-Mex food and margaritas. Share a 4-liquor 46 ounce Cactus Bowl with friends or try some of our premium Tequilas, more than 20 in all. Some of our favored margaritas include pomegranite margaritas, mojito margaritas and the Horni margarita made with Sauza Hornitos. Voted "Best Margarita" by Citysearch Best Of, The Improper Bostonion and Boston Best Guide.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Southwestern kitsch prevails at this popular hangout: Horns hang on adobe-painted walls and a giant stuffed buffalo (nicknamed Iron Mike Bison) proudly watches over the bar. A religious following of margarita fans congregates in the bar, a premier after-work pickup spot, though lofty ceilings often make conversation difficult. Service is dependable during non-busy spells. Come summer, the sidewalk patio proves exceptionally popular (in other words, expect to wait). Holidays like Cinco de Mayo and Marathon Monday bring large, boisterous crowds and long lines to get in.

The Food
The solid Tex-Mex menu features sizzling fajitas and customized quesadillas, served in gigantic portions with fresh sides. Robust appetizers (heaping plates of nachos, crunchy taquitos) and Southwestern-tinged sandwiches are popular lunch options. Fishbowl-sized margaritas offer a Southwestern rebuttal to scorpion bowls, and pack just as potent a punch. Save room for the apple crispinas dessert--a delicious Mexican interpretation of apple pie.

Key Points

  • Private parties up to 200
  • Catering menu
  • Happy hour specials

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - Show up early to beat the after-work crowd and enjoy half-price appetizers from 4pm to 7pm (Mondays through Thursdays).
  2. When to Go - Stop by Sundays from 10pm to midnight and enjoy a free taco bar.

Best Margaritas

by Heather N. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,928

If you are looking for the best Mnarguritas in Boston, go no further then th Cactus Club located on Boyston St. They have seating outside, inside and at the bar. The people are very friendly and helpful. They will help you make your own margurita from differnt alcohols and flavors. They have a wide variety of margurita floavors to get everyones tastebuds going. No only is their alcoho choices excellent, but there food is great too. They are a very inexspensive resturante, but this is not because the quality or taste of their food is lacking. Everything is excellent at the Cactus Club.

I mean, it's on Boylston Street

by Amanda O. | insider Insider | Rank: 32,423

The food is good, the margaritas would probably taste better if they didn't claim to be the best in Boston - they're not the BEST I've had around here, but they're good. The clientele is usually college kids and as a bar scene it's too crowded in the front room: with hardly anywhere to sit it's a pain in the neck to order drinks at the bar and/or get the waitress' attention b/c there are inevitably drunken co-eds in the way ! The bathrooms were also dirty the last time I went, but I can't recall if that's typical.

PROS: food, drinks
CONS: atmosphere

The Cactus Club offers a dazzling array of yummy frozen drinks. The atmosphere is fun, and it's on Boylston St. right near a number of other bars. The food is also very good. I would recommend this place as a great birthday or celebration bar.

PROS: good frozen drinks, fun place
CONS: can get very crowded

Amazing Quesadillas

by MRS19129

I thoroughly enjoyed this place when I was visiting Boston a couple weeks ago & sat on the patio for a late lunch. They're quesadilla menu is really extensive & you can make some strange options. I had avocados & black beans. SO good. I've tried already at home to recreate it! I recommend eating here.

Pros: Food, Bar selection, Outdoor seating

Not so great

by CSMobileUser3

This place is overrated. Classic margs are good but the specialties miss the mark. Border cafes chips are much better. The coconut shrimp has no flavor and the servie so so. Unless you have downtown shopping stick to border cafe.

went 2 times i a row. 1st time everything was perfect minus the waitress not hearing my request to take my food home- $7 down the drain. however- she was a good waitress non the less. the next night that gal heard me and i later enjoyed my left overs.

its casual, its fast and its yummy.

Pros: fast service, "fast food"

Cons: speak up so wait staff hears your requests, salty margaritas

MMM...mmm...Salt Licking Good!

by SparkySpark

Cactus Club is one of my favorita casual bars/restaurants in the area. The service is always friendly, food is great comfort food when you need it, and the infamous margaritas are delish. I hated margaritas untill Cactus Club showed me what an actual margarita IS! They have a great patio on Boylston Street (good for people watching) and the value for your money is very acceptable for Back Bay area.
Promise me if you haven't tried Cactus Club you will? Your missing out if you don't go!

Pros: Best Margaritas Around

Cons: Best Margaritas Around....You drink more than you'd like

Great Margaritas & Generous Portions with reasonable prices

by malcamsam

I was very surprised on my visit to Cactus Club. The Staff was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about their tequilas. After a mini-tequila lesson from my bartender I opted to try their "Horni Margarita" and it was delicious! The sour mix was very fresh, a nice refreshment from others I had that taste way to sweet and artificial. The food was hot and comforting. For Boylston street Boston area you will not find prices/value that can compete. I was a first-time Cactus-go-er and will most definitely return again.

Pros: Fresh Sour Mix & large variety of Tequilas + Value for the Money + Service

Cons: Parking - goes without saying for anywhere in Back Bay

A+ MARGARITAS

by jwcarp

Best damn food & margaritas!
Cactus Club knows how to do it right - from the great drink menu with delicious concoctions to the friendly and good looking staff you always leave here with a smile on your face. They play great music (even on the weekends) that appeals to all generations. They also have a HUGE buffalo over their bar that believe it or not, smoke comes out of his nose!!! You should go if you haven't been here yet. Highly Reccomended.

Pros: Margaritas

Cons: Crowded Evenings

Great Food & Great Drinks

by MichaelBrines

Expect a wait on the weekends especially! BUT Every time I've been there there are always great looking women from the customers to the employees - so chat up a girl while your waiting for your table and enjoy a margarita from their over agerage and unique maregarita menu. The food is above average & when you put it all together along with very reasonable prices for Back Bay...I grage it an A!

Pros: Great Crowd!

Cons: Parking Stinks

nice decor; average food

by freewilly7

long wait (i don't understand. why?!?), ok food, thematic (tex-mex) decors that most restaurants don't care to spend the efforts these days. so i give them that much credit.

did i have a margarita? if i had it wasn't (good or bad) enough to be remembered.
:)

Pros: elabroate decor

Cons: average everything else; unjustified long wait

Great Time at Cactus Club

by soxyfan

I've been to Cactus Club a bunch of times and have never been disappointed. Their margaritas are the best in Boston by far. The bar is always a fun place to hang out - good looking crowd. The staff is friendly and the service is quick (they keep my margarita glass full). I go after work a lot for half price food in the bar. Keep it up Cactus Club.

Impressed!

by amandak79

I moved to Boston from Arizona last winter and I've been looking for a place with really good Mexican food. Last week some of my friends took me to dinner at the Cactus Club and I loved it! The food was excellent, not bland like a few other places I've tried, and the margaritas were great! I was really impressed with our waitress too; she was very friendly and attentive. I'm glad I found this place!

Pros: MARGARITAS, food & service!

Cons: A little noisy.

Great staff, good food, disappointing margaritas

by annae393

I have had after-work drinks at the Cactus Club many times, the door and bar staff are always friendly. I normally just grab a beer or two and leave but I decided to take my out-of-town boyfriend for dinner one night. We were seated promptly outside on the patio. The complimentary chips and salsa are much better than what I have had anywhere else. I had a chicken wrap and he had fajitas... the food is good and more upscale than a normal Mexcian/Southwestern joint. Also our waiter was very nice and engaging, I was very impressed.

I have to say though that I was VERY disappointed with the margarita. I am no 'rita expert, but it was bad. It actually tasted worse than what you would get if you dumped grocery store mix in with tequila. I did order the standard, but I could not taste any tequila, despite the $7 price tag. It tasted like 95% mix. I actually had trouble finishing it, and it just came in a standard glass which took away from the ambiance. Perhaps the more upscale 'ritas are better but there "standard, very good" marg should taste like something, esp. considering they keep getting "Best Margartias in Town" awards.

Pros: Ambience, Chips & Salsa, Staff, Food

Cons: Margarita, Huge line for the bathroom no matter day or time

Avoid at all costs

by mesheler

Oh my God! People have told me about this place since I moved to Boston -- "it's great -- very authentic!"

Authentic WHAT?

Food was disgusting and not hot enough. Margaritas tasted like cough syrup, even though they were made with Top-Shelf spirits. It makes me wonder how anyone could rate this above average as it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had! I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. I will never even THINK of returning.

Pros: Service (wait staff, not Bartenders)

Cons: Food was awful and cold, drinks were undrinkable

Best Drinks Around

by chic72

I've been there a few times for drinks and appetizers in the bar and have never been disappointed. (I think its even half priced food after work.) The margaritas are by far the best around and they have a huge specialty drink list. I love the nachos too.

Pros: Drinks, Service

Cons: The bar gets so packed on the weekends

Mediocre food

by marinaka228

The food is distinctly mediocre. The salsa tastes like it?s straight out of a can and the Margaritas are made from a mix. The main dishes were flavorless and lacking in fresh ingredients. The service was pretty good.

Pros: bar scene

Cons: food

I forgot how much I like this place! I went here recently for drinks and apps and it was SO good! The margaritas are delicious (not wimpy like at some places), the food was great and the service was very attentive. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Just a fun place to hang out. Kinda makes you forget about the cold winter outside...

Pros: Great margaritas, delicious food and good atmosphere

Slow service, mediocre margaritas

by lilkel8267

After seeing everyone rave about how fabulous the Cactus Club's margaritas are, I went with a group after work to enjoy some half-price appetizers, too. However, I found that the service was slow (took forever to get refills), the margaritas, while good, were no better than I've had at any other Mexican restaurant/bar, and the price of the drinks more than outweighed the savings on the appetizers. I wasn't impressed.

Cons: I've had better (margaritas).

Cactus Club is one of my favorite places in Boston to meet with friends for dinner and drinks. The atmosphere is comfortable and fun. The margaritas are the BEST. I've had dinner there several times and have always found the food to be very good. The service is always friendly and attentive. My friends and I usually head to the bar after dinner to check out the crowd and have more of their awesome margaritas. Cheers to you Cactus Club.

girls night out!

by partygirl96

I have been to 3 bachelorette dinners at Cactus Club and have had a great time, every time. I've read a couple negative posts and I just don't get it? The drink selection is great (frozen raspberry margs are my favorite). The food is very good (best quesadillas I've ever had). The staff is excellent (cute bartenders). Cactus Club is the spot for a girls night out.

Pros: fun place all around

Cons: the bar can get a little packed on the weekends

Awful, Awful, Awful

by eanderson82

As if having cold torillas and soggy burritos wasnt bad enough, their so called 'fabulous' margaritas are at the bottom of the list. i've had better ones at cookie cutter (and far less expensive) chains like TGIFriday and Applebees. the service was like a trip back to the elementary school cafeteria (only elementary school had better food...) their servers wore overly dirty uniforms and didnt even smile as you handed them their tip. I thought that since the reviews were so good i'd tried it a second time, and this time it was even worse. on a sunday i waited 20 minutes for another overly salty, bland 10$ margarita, and a whopping 45 for my tacos (of course they were cold). all my friends food was either burnt or cold, their avacado dip was literally BLACK on top from being out so long...really. i dont usually review places but i hold an exception for this hole in the wall dump.

Pros: none

Cons: everything

They've changed the food to make it even better and the Pomegrante Marg is a wonderful addition. Go, its great!

Sangria, Margs & Patio!

by gunnin4it

The Cactus Club has the best patio in Boston hands down! We always stop there after Sox games for the new sangria. The food has gotten a lot better recently and they have killer margs too (go for the perfect marg in the fancy glass).

Pros: Patio, Sangria, Margaritas

Cons: Sometimes is there's a little bit of a wait for the patio.

There might be better...

by experiencer

Although I am having a difficult time finding a good Tex-Mex restaurant in Boston, I do know that Cactus Club probably isn't as good as it gets. The food was mediocre. I don't know what else to say. No one in our party of 5 thought it was anything special. The queso was disappointing also which is hard to mess up. I did enjoy the classic margarita. The environment was fun although it was way too loud to have a conversation at a table for 5. As for me, I will continue my search for good Mexican food in Boston.

Pros: Classic Margarita

Cons: Loud

From the title, you can imagine how disappointed I was in my first and last Cactus Club margarita; they were unimaginative and elementary to say the least, and all the hype has just become annoying. The menu was alright, but again, average and uninspired. The music is terrible, fortunately you can barely hear it, and don't even get me started on the staff, the bartenders and doorstaff especially. I could go for hours, but I simply regret my visit, and want to give everyone a heads up.

Pros: Serve alcohol, Location

this place gets uncomfortably tight on the weekends, the frozen margaritas are served out of machines--I'm baffled by the #1 vote they got for best margaritas. Sorry, but boston don't know mexican. by bgal1325

My group and I stopped by for Happy Hour on a Wednesday afternoon for "Margaritas and Massages". What we thought was a cool idea was actually an opportunity for a 5 minute massage to be a 5 minute sales pitch for Sauza tequila. It was quite annoying really.

Overall though, the drinks were fabulous (my fave was the Mojito Margarita), the food was pretty good, and the servers were very attentive.

The food is great too and the staff is very friendly and. When its warm and sunny, there's nothing better than kicking back out on the patio with a margarita and some nachos!

by malsamcam

The Cactus Club is one of the best bars in the Back Bay I have been to in a while. Knowing that it has been around for years, I decided to bring guests visiting town there to show them a good time (It was my first time as well). We all had a blast. The bartenders acted like they have known you for years, friendly with smiles galore. The food was out of this world. We had a few apps because it was Happy Hour and we had to take advantage of thier 1/2 price appetizers, snake bites and flautas are to die for! We heard from a cocktail waitress, whom none of us guys could determine which one of the 2 (3 if you include the bartender) was more beautiful (georgeous!) that they also serve Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays! Psyched. We'll deffintly be back often.

Pros: Georgeous Staff, Great Food, Great atmosphere

Cons: Staff wont date you, b/c they are better, looking than you!

I have only ate ther a couple of times and found it to be very tasty to my surprise (considering i don't like mexican food very much)! I would reccomend this place to anyone who is looking for a place to drink and eat without all the underage crowd hanging about. It's more for anyone between 23 & 40.

by justmorrison

The Cactus Club...one of the few places left around Boston (back bay) where you can go there not very frequently, and have the bartenders remember you...SO friendly. The service in the dining room in so great, they are so polite and never slack when it comes to doing their job! It's a great place to hang out after work, (half off all apps in the bar) and meet friends or coworkers. I have never had any issues or problems at the Cactus Club, and it because they see to it that thier customers don't.

Pros: good crowd, hot staff, a million tequilas

Cons: , hard to park

Why do people go here?

by delikado

I've been to the Cactus Club several times, and have consistently been underwhelmed. The margaritas tasted like they were made from a liquor store mix, not from scratch! The bar layout is also pretty claustrophobic, making it hard to have a "good time" when you're constantly being elbowed by random frat boy-types. The food isn't much better, in fact, I had an upset stomach one evening after dining there... I'm not sure if it was caused by their margaritas or their food, but needless to say, I won't waste any time figuring that out.

Pros: fairly inexpensive

Cons: crowded, bland food

This place really knows what it takes to be a great and lasting bar/restaurant! I stopped in one night early in the ACLS series -- they installed a new projection TV in the dining room to make game watching more enjoyable. They've also got a new drink menu and have added a Caipirinha. I'm not sure what they last reviewer was talking about in regards to the margs here -- I've never tasted a better one - try the BAJA, it's my favorite!
