Since 1972, my customers still tell me what a delightful discovery it is to step out of a Boston alley and into the heart of Mexico. That is exactly what I had envisioned when I decorated the coffered door and walls of my restaurant with the bright Talavera tiles from Puebla, Mexico. Casa Romero is located in the midst of glamorous Back Bay at 30 Gloucester Street between Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
More than 30 years ago, Leo Romero decided against following in his family's political footsteps and opened this gem of a restaurant in an alleyway between Newbury Street and Commonwealth Avenue. Romero's award-winning cuisine--a taste of which vindicates his career choice--is complemented by his restaurant's lovely interior: exposed brick, imported tiles and colorful artwork make this one of the city's best date spots (come summer, ask for a table in the lovely outdoor courtyard). Friendly waiters deliver strong margaritas and delicious sangria from the service-only bar.

The Food
Those ready to graduate from the burrito and quesadilla sector of Mexican cuisine come to sample smoky huitlacoche mushrooms wrapped in spinach tortillas, pork tenderloin marinated in oranges and smoked chipotle peppers. The revelatory mole poblano arrives with a deliciously intricate sauce, made with chocolate and too many spices to mention. Desserts, including a complex ricotta-coconut cheesecake, are also excellent.

Key Points

  • Authentic Mexican Dining
  • Early Bird Menu: 3 courses $21
  • Tucked away in the Back Bay

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - Despite its clandestine location, the restaurant does a strong weekend business (reservations are essential).
  2. Know Before You Go - Look for L'Espalier: Hard-to-spot Casa Romero is located behind this venerable French establishment.
  3. The Extras - Those looking to enjoy a romantic date on Romero's intimate patio can bring along the pooch, provided he behaves.

Ratings_icons Casa Romero is GREAT.

We LOVE this restaurant. We go out to dinner alot as a couple and as a family (with our teenagers) and this is and has been one of our favorites forever. Great chicken cilantro, mole poblano and homemade guacamole. Best margaritas in town. The proprietors are wonderful and always courteous. Highly recommended.

Ratings_icons DO NOT RISK IT AT CASA ROMERO!

DO NOT TRUST THIS RESTAURANT! They advertised a 4 course pri fixe menu for New Year's Eve. We made reservations WEEKS in advance. We called a cab to take us there for our 7:30 reservation and there was a sign on the door saying "Closed due to water damage." NO PHONE CALL or posting on their website alerting customers to this at all on New Year's Eve. Obviously there were no other places to go that were not already full! DO NOT GO HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! They are inconsiderate and frankly, not worth it. There are plenty of other reputable restaurants in Boston who do know the proper way to alert diners to a cancellation. BE WARNED!
Cons: DO NOT EAT HERE - CLOSED ON NEW YEARS AND NEVER CALLED DINERS WITH RESERVATIONS!!

Ratings_icons Destination for Mexican, Most authentic atmostphere

Gretchen K.

Casa Romero is definitely a destination restaurant in Boston. If not for the authentic mexican food which is superb, the decor and funky mystery of its back bay alley location is worth the trip alone. Right off the Hynes convention center T-stop, it's worth it to make a night out of going there. They have one of the sweetest garden patios in the city. Cluttered, colorful, and lined with plants, I can't recommend it enough, especially on a warm summer week night!

Ratings_icons GREAT authentic Mexican

Nick M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,672

It's ok if you don't like spicy food. Authentic Mexican prepared by mexicans (I believe) and served by mostly a mexican staff does not have to be spicy. Try this restaurant, you won't be dissapointed. If it's warm, ask to sit outside!

Ratings_icons Fabulous Mexican Food

Casa Romero offers amazingly delicious Mexican food. The drinks, especially the margaritas, are also quite good. They also have an outdoor dining area for when the weather is nice.

Ratings_icons Love it

I love to eat here - love the mole!

Pros: Great food

Cons: a little pricey

Ratings_icons Take it from the locals who eat there often.

Take it from the locals here, Casa Romero has been in operation for many years. It is not fancy Mexican, it is everyday Mexican prepared, served and owned by those who know this food. It is loved by many of us who live in the neighborhood and many of us are foodies with discriminating tastes.

The service is simple but very attentive, the wine will please simple to moderate vinophiles, the mexican menu is respectable with some very nice items on it. I cannot understand the negative reviews and I must be fortunate because we eat there often and it is always consistent and fresh. The only draw back is the rice they serve with the food needs to be done much better than it is but, I dont worry about the rice because the portions are great along with the selections. The stuffed squid is great, give it a try, steaks good too (but not steakhouse like, it is a mexican restaurant after all).

Pros: Service, consistency

Cons: The chips used to be better;)

I have been to the Casa a dozen times and I am very impressed with everything there. Only the freshest ingrediants are used and every dish seems to be perfect. The decorations of the restaurant make you feel like you are in Mexico. It doesn't get better than the Casa.

Pros: Ambiance,Service,Creative

Cons: none

Ratings_icons "Bad to the Bone"

I should have sensed the red flags when I saw the entrance was located in a public alley. Although the service was very friendly, the decor of the place was dingy and slightly musty looking (I hesitated to sit by the wall, as I was afraid a termite might pop out). My broiled shrimp entree was poorly presented and looked like a gloppy mess. The shrimps were nicely plump, but lacked proper seasoning (unless the soupy swampy-green puddle was supposed to function as the dip). Short on time, we decided to forgo dessert, which might have not been a bad decision, considering the quality of the entrees. I was also shocked to see most of the entrees averaged around $25 (due to the Back Bay price inflation perhaps?), as I have had better and cheaper food at Taco Cabana. My experience at Casa Romero felt like the movie Waterworld: overpriced, overhyped, and a major disappointment.

Ratings_icons Awful service....... awful manager

arreolajaime

Awful service. I know it was 5 de Mayo but it is a business. You're supposed to figure out how to meet customer's needs, not supposed to assume people would expect worst service because it is a holiday. I talked to the manager about the bad service and he told me that I was supposed to understand about their underperformance because it was a high peak season. I was in a 20 people group, very frequent clients and we're not coming back EVER.

Cons: service... awful

Ratings_icons What a surprise!

ajohnson2828

What a pleasant surprise. I went out to dinner at Casa Romero with some friends for a birthday party, and this dining experience was not at all what I was expecting. After all of the terrible Mexican food I've had here in Boston, I expected another run-of-the-mill Tex-Mex kind of restaurant. The food was so authentic, and the margaritas are to die for! I will be sure to come back. :-)

Pros: Margaritas, Margaritas, Margaritas!

Cons: Service could have been a bit faster, but it was busy...

Ratings_icons not feeling the love

This was my first trip back after many years. Unfortunately I was disappointed- the salsa was bland- Everything was bland, The shrimp flautas had a strong taste I am going to try to forget- I wouldn't be so harsh, but I remember this place fondly from earlier years. I guess you just cant go back home again. The menu's were dirty- the entire place had a shabbiness that I couldn't look beyond- especially at these prices. I am sorry to say that I cannot recommend Casa romero.

Ratings_icons A hidden gem!

jonverey

Loved this dining experience! Service was excellent, staff were genuinely nice, and food was of excellent quality. Outside seating terrace and cosy atmosphere makes this place perfect for a first-date!

Pros: Ambience, location, service

Ratings_icons Awful Mexican!

nmarsh

The food here is mediocre at best. Along with the price (expensive) you have a dud. I do NOT recommend this restaurant. You can certainly find better Mexican in Boston. The guacamole was horrible and the enchiladas were tasteless.

Ratings_icons Got my Hopes Up

foodntwrklover

I kept searching and searching for a good sit-down mexican restaurant to take a freinds for my 21st birthday and from what I saw on their website, Casa Romero looked like the perfect place. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I mean, don't get me wrong, the food itself is good, it's just not great. And for the prices they charge, the food should be great. I guess I have to keep looking....

Ratings_icons wasting $$$ + leaving hungry = Casa Racrapo

africh

Very Nice atmosphere and good food, but $18 for 3 enchiladas is a rip off. Plus paying for refills on chips... That's should be a show stopper right there for anyone considering going here... Portions are not pleasing, but if money doesn't matter to you, then hey tear it up!

Pros: Nice Atmosphere

Cons: Expensive, small portions, No parking

Ratings_icons A nice place minus the FOOD

mango807

The portion of the food is like smaller than how much people feed their pets! Def. not work the price. It's way too over priced. The service was average. I think it's way too hyped up. I guess they are overpriced so badly due to managing their rent in that location. I don't reccommend it!

Pros: The service

Cons: Food, Expensive, Small

Ratings_icons mucho bueno!!!

Ratings_icons beuno but mucho deinero

texteq

the salsa is so good i wanted to drink it, almost had too drinks were slow .Food good but small portions for too much money compared to other places and the service didnt match the prices and bathroom was needing sprucing up.

Pros: great salsa, authentic feel, cozy

Cons: basement, needs renovation

Ratings_icons FANTASTIC!!!

pquintiliani

This place is awesome, tucked away between Newbury and Comm Ave, but it is a very romantic place for a date. The margaritas are a bit small for the $8 charge, but the flavor makes up for it. The appetizers and very good, and the entrees, i had the pork tips, were tough to choose between.

Pros: atmosphere, drink menu, price

Cons: parking, waiting list

Ratings_icons Triple check your reservations

tadawes

I have no idea what the food or service is like here. I made a reservation, and the staff at C.R. called me back to confirm, yet when I showed up with my party (of 10), we were told there was no reservation. Showing them the call back number in my cell phone didn't prove anything either! They will NEVER see me in this restaurant!

Ratings_icons Our party was asked to leave...

kwajmamasita

Recently had our company holiday party here, about 50 of us in total. The food was good, the service was pleasant, but the pacing of three courses took quite a while, and thus the party ran for longer than the restaurant had estimated. The owner himself, actually had the audacity to ask the entire 50 patron party to leave, so that he could seat the 8 people who were waiting at the door as we left. I could not believe it.... I am in the industry myself and NEVER under any circumstances would I ever ask a party of any size to get up from their tables and leave, no matter what the circumstances. I will never go back again, if this is the value that the owner himself places on the satisfaction of his patrons. It was a disgrace to the restaurant, to say the least.

Ratings_icons Terrible dont eat here

candyred04

I'm sorry, but when I ask for chile, do not give me a can of chipotle paste. I expect a fresh chile made from tomatoes, chiles, onions, garlic.

This is terrible mexican food, and way too expensive...i

if you really want mexican, dont eat here.

Cons: , terrible food
