I have a 15 year old Chelsea Shipstrike that had stopped running. I sent it in to Chelsea and they wanted about 300 dollars for complete repair. Pretty expensive for a shipstrike.
Well, I just love these clocks, so instead I had them replace the movement, hands, and face with new ship's bell parts.
They will also polish up everything, for "only" about $1300.
I figure, if you can't be without one, you might as well get the best, and this way I keep the legacy of my original brass case but get top of the line ship's bell upgrades with a new serial number. But also with the original date of my shipstrike case!
If I bought a used ships bell for half this much, it would still need to go to Chelsea to be restored, and I would pay just as much for a (fine) clock that has no personal history for me.
Yes, Chelsea is VERY expensive, but they are the only remaining company of their kind in the USA.

I currently own six Chelsea clocks, five Mariners and an Admiral. All are vintage clocks. One, which got me interested in Chelsea clocks was given to my father by my mother as a wedding present in the 1920s. Four of the Mariners I purchased on eBay and they required some repair, cleaning ans oiling. I have never taken any of my clocks for servicing any place other than Chelsea Clock Co. While I might be able to have servicing done at a lower cost I know when I bring a clock to Chelsea it will be service properly by people who stake their reputation on doing things right the first time. Chelsea also guarantees their servicing for two years. I treat my clocks like they are family and Chelsea does the same. To keep the Chelsea tradition in our family four of the clocks will go to our four children as presents this coming Christmas. For my money you can not find a better clock than a Chelsea clock. When it needs servicing who better than Chelsea the company who made it. I'd never think of doing anything different.

We'll start by saying that we're not clock collectors, but we do collect naval artifacts. We bought a rather beatup Chelsea Claremont, not because of the clock (oddly enough we already had a Claremont in perfect restored condition that we'd bought several years ago), but because of who it had been presented to many years ago per the engraved inscription on the base. We sent the clock off to Chelsea for restoration. We were a little shocked when the quote came back - over $2000 - but decided to let them go ahead with the work. A couple months later, we got the clock back, but upon cursory inspection found several areas on the "refinished" base that didn't appear to have been refinished at all. We sent the clock back and Chelsea redid the base and sent it back again after another couple of months. The piece is now okay, but there is still a fairly deep (not quite as deep as the engraved inscription, but close) 3/4" long scratch on the front of the base about an inch or two from the inscription. Now, if you go to your local Mercedes dealer and pay a premium price for some body work, you don't expect to get your top of the line car back with exposed body putty - send it back and have it returned the second time with a 6" scratch on the driver's door now do you? By the way, the scratch on the clock is a late edition, it wasn't there when it came back the first time from them. Quite frankly, after over four months, endless emails, packing up and shipping the clock not once but twice, we're giving up and just living with an almost completely restored clock...As to the reviews below, we rather side with the guy who says these folks don't always follow through on their work.

Just a response to Franks review. As you say perhaps all they did was blow on your clock and jiggle it a bit. This is exactly what you paid for. If you knew which way to jiggle it and what part to blow on you would not have needed assistance. This is a precission instrument you are talking about. What you paid for was over one hundred years of knowlege in the proper care and feeding of your masterpiece. Next time your time piece needs attention I dare you to send it to XYZ clock repair company. You will undoubtedly do more harm than good to your valuable time piece. To anyone else interested I am alifelong collector of Chelsea clocks and in no way affiliated with the company. For my collection which is worth more than many years of my meager wage I would trust none other than the fine and dedicated repair staff at Chelsea clock.

I recently had my antique 24 hour marine Chelsea clock repaird as it had taken to stoping on ocasion . It was not a cheap repair , as they Say they completely take apart the movements and replace whats necesary and mail youre clock back when all is in good working order. I got my clock back with a packing slip , and indeed it seems to be running fine. The problem incounterd by me from Chelsea Clock Co. Is there Honesty and a problem delivering the following documents that they have told me on numerous ocasions to expect in the mail ..Well this is all Talk as I am im sure Out Of Sight Out of Mind as far as there concernd.I have calld and told to expect these papers relating what was found and what was done to my clock and sent several E mails with this same Empty Prommis..Well I Say a prommis made is a debt unpaid" So I have yet to be paid for what is supposed to be deliverd. I would be weary of Chelsea Clock Co in the future as they seem to be capable of carying out a repair..Assuming at least . No writen proof as yet to afirm anything was ever done to my clock. Maby they just blew on it jiggled it and sent it back for all I know ..It does run now though so ill give them a single Star until I see better of them ..Good luck to anyone else expecting to be treted respectably .

These clocks are the kind of timepieces your heirs will bicker over. My mantle piece would not be complete without my Chelsea clock. If you overwind it or otherwise abuse it, never fear, they are guaranteed and the service department is top notch! Artist create these clocks and the passion they have for craftsmanship shines through. Buying one of these is an investment and one you will not regret making.

PROS: quality, craftmanship, friendly service, timeless
CONS: price - you pay for quality - don't buy the cheap battery clocks
